A MESSAGE FROM MONSIGNOR BROCKMAN
Growing in Faith, Building Together: Our Greatly Needed Parish Center – A pleasure to begin with you, our final
steps in making our long-needed Parish Center, a reality, having suspended our efforts with the onset on COVID, but now set to resume. I am very pleased to report that to date we have raised $5.2M towards our
goal of $6.0M on a total construction cost of $8.2M – a great accomplishment, and tremendous testament to the generosity of our parishioners and also our parish Pastoral Council, parish volunteers and Pastoral Staff, who coordinated the effort, all without any use of funding development consultants.
The need is abundantly clear. Not all parish ministry can be done virtually, and so for in person meeting, we are simply do not have enough in number or appropriately sized, meeting spaces on our Sacred Heart Cam-
pus and zero meeting places on our Cathedral campus – there is simply no place to go. You will see all this in detail in the series of short videos, which have been posted over the last two weeks on our YouTube channel, our social media, linked from our website, linked in the E-Newsletter, beginning with my introductory video.
Our challenge – That the $5.2M raised thus far, was given by only by 10% of our registered parishioners. With
over 4000 registered families in our parish, clearly that is a data point on which we can do much better – in getting to our goal and bridging the delta of $800K towards that end or even better, if we raise over $800K,
reducing the planned $2.2M 15-year mortgage to a lesser amount. Remember, no gift is too small, though for such projects, great sacrifice is needed to achieve great ends. As I cited last weekend, a great quote from noted American jurist, Justice William Brennan: “We must meet the challenge, rather than wish it was not be-
fore us.” Indeed and well said of any great endeavor, this one, no different, especially since it effects many future generations to come with regard to formation in our Catholic faith, but also building up the strength of our parish, through community activities, sports leagues and other opportunities not yet possible, as we have no place for those.
Prayerful Consideration and Making the Commitment – Turn to Our Lord regarding then what that sacrifice
may be for you and your family – not replacing your regular giving and returning thanks to Our Lord for His goodness to you, but rather, a sacrifice, meaning what is above the regular of what you do to support the mis-sion of Christ in and through our great Cathedral parish. Continuing this weekend then, join me in beginning
to place in focus, a personal and family commitment for us to each do our part to achieve this goal of $800K. I will be inviting at each Mass options – written and electronic – of how to make a sacrificial gift and then ask-ing each of you to prayerfully consider that offering over the coming weeks. Review the Rooms of the Parish Center Onsite – Through the hospitality of our parish Living Faith Committee
and the expertise of our parish Building Committee, join us after Mass this weekend on the site of where our
Parish Center will be constructed, to see the layout of all the rooms that the Center will contain, marked out on the ground. A reception with refreshments, served and questions on the project welcomed will be held onsite. Plan to join us!
The Road Ahead – With our funding development goal achieved or even acceded (reducing our long-term
mortgage obligations), we are planning to break ground in the Fall of 2022 or early 2023, if not sooner, with then about a year to complete the Parish Center construction. My great gratitude to those who have already contributed, also our Pastoral Council, our Finance Council, our Building Committee and our parish Pastoral Staff for their great dedication and creativity to assist us in this project and to ensure that we do all possible to
provide the space needed for our continued parish growth, not just in number, but most especially in Our Lord.
Lectio Divina Video Series Return – As we did during the height of Covid, and now returning as part of our
adult formation opportunities, will be our weekly video series on prayer over the readings for the coming Sun-day. It is an important part of weekly prayer to do so and these weekly installments will make it easy. They will
be done by myself, Fr. Matthew, Fr. Juan Andres, Deacon Mike Alig and Deacon Juan Banda – will help us fo-cus our reflection on the Word as well in prep for preaching. We are putting the schedule together and it is my hope that we can begin posting these soon, certainly in the next month. More on this to come in my col-umn, including more detail from our great Catholic spiritual store house on the ancient prayer practice of Lec-
tio Divina.
Annual Celebration of the White Mass – With our annual celebration of the Red Mass last week at Sacred
Heart, honoring and praying for all those who labor in the legal profession and those who serve in govern-ment, we turn our attention to another vocation we honor and pray for as well, usually in the month of Octo-ber and associated with the feast of Saint Luke: those who serve as medical professionals. Plan to join us on Sunday, October 31st at the 10:00 am Mass, as Bishop Luis Rafael will be with us as we honor and pray over
these who serve our health care and to whom we owe such great gratitude for their heroic service during this last year and a half. More to come.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE First Reading: (Wis 7:7-8)
I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me.
I preferred her to scepter and throne, and deemed riches nothing in comparison with her.
Psalm: (Ps 90)
Fill us with your love, O Lord, and we will sing for joy!
Second Reading: (Heb 4:13)
No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.
Gospel: (Mk 10:21)
“Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come,
follow me.”

GOSPEL MEDITATION
If we are truly in love with God, then the basics are not going to be enough. That love is going to want to be expressed in going above and beyond, in
leaving the comfortable and familiar, in stretching and growing, and in following a voice other than our own. St. Teresa of Calcutta rightly instructs us that for “love to be real, it must cost, it must hurt, it
must empty us of self.” Being in love with God re-quires more than just checking the boxes of the commandments. It requires a sincere and uncondi-
tional self-investment. Desiring God with our whole heart, mind, and soul means that I must also desire a relationship with my neighbor with that same degree of fervor.
Biases and prejudices usually occur when people are kept at a distance and treated as objects. We cannot truly know our neighbors, especially if they
are different than us, if we keep them in boxes and do not listen to their stories. When we open ourselves to listen to another person’s story, we begin to real-ize more how similar we are than dissimilar. Being
overly attached to our possessions, ideologies, agendas, lifestyles, and personal needs are absolute barriers to achieving the type of personal investment
love demands. This is why following Christ can be difficult. It is less a matter of intellect and more a matter of heart and soul. It requires that we transfer our treasure from an investment in tangible secular
things and move it into the Kingdom of God. It is only the gift of wisdom and discernment that can help us decide what to do and how to do it.
Contemporaries of Jesus would know that a camel could not enter through the portal of a city weighed down with the baggage it was carrying. In order to enter, the baggage must be removed so that the
animal could fit through the entry way. The same is true for us. We carry a lot of excessive baggage around with us that keeps us tethered to our past
histories, wounds, myopic world views, prejudices, fears, and suspicions. To invest ourselves in the King-dom of God, do God’s work and live out our love relationship with God, we need to shed the extra
weight. While it may seem that a lot of that stuff is necessary, it really is not. We are much more than the things that we think define us and more secure
than we think. The more there is to hold on to and the more that we carry with us, the harder it will be to leave it all behind. Many choose not to and walk away sad because they are not ready to trust. ©LPi

special opportunity for me to live out my Catholic faith in support of human life and dignity. And what can be more critical in our culture today than to de-fend the right to life for unborn children?”

LIVE THE LITURGY Presumption can be a great sin. We can easily con-
vince ourselves that as long as we do the bare mini-mum or master the basics, it is sufficient. Love doesn’t operate this way. If we are truly in love with God, then the basics are not going to be enough.
That love is going to want to get expressed in going above and beyond, in leaving the comfortable and familiar, in stretching and growing and in following a
voice other than our own. This is what those who are truly in pursuit of wisdom come to realize. Just like any human relationship worth achieving reveals, we never reach a plateau in following the Gospel or
growing in wisdom and holiness. Wisdom is the rud-der that guides us through all of life’s attractions and options. It alone determines what is worth pursuing
and what must be left behind. That is why those who are only concerned about checking the boxes and doing the least amount possible often walk away sad when offered God’s gift of life eternal. They are
not truly in love. ©LPi

JUSTICE BULLETIN BOARD
I pleaded, and the spirit of wisdom came to me.
--Wisdom 7:7
I love when we have the liturgical readings from
the biblical literature of Wisdom. What I like is that the author of the text and their audience are not waiting to be saved. They are seeking a way to make life better based on their experiences. Walter
Vogels, in his book, Words of Wisdom, (Novalis, 1999) states, “Wisdom literature speaks of God’s trust that people will discover from experience how
they should live. The wise ponder life’s complexities and learn how to think of themselves and to relate to others and to God.” Wisdom, Vogels says, “is deeply religious, since it is based upon a profound
belief in God the Creator, who has ordered the world. As humanity grows and gradually arrives at better insights, the border between order and cha-
os is constantly pushed back” (28). God trusts God’s creation to discern the way forward through experience and through listening and seeking the wisdom of others. Vogels names it, “creation theol-
ogy,” as opposed to salvation-history theology that we more often hear in liturgies. Using both theolo-gies and adding the call of the prophets, we have
the fullness of the texts from the Bible.
It seems like we need more people in search of wis-
dom these days. Sure, we learn a lot of information using the internet but that is not achieving the re-ception of wisdom. Vogels presents the three
streams in the believing community as priest, prophet, and sage. While people regularly concern themselves with the laws and order of the commu-nity, and sometimes assume the charismatic pro-
phetic role, rarely, if ever, do we consider our wis-dom role. As Vogels states, “People would no long-er have the easy way out of asking others for clear-
cut answers. They would have to struggle honestly with life and find out for themselves what had to be done, and at what point” (29). The complexity of problems in our world today calls us to put on the
beard of the sage. “Jesus is often seen as a proph-et, but he was even more a sage…Jesus, like all of us, learned through his experience and grew be-
cause of it: ‘And Jesus increased in wisdom, in stat-ure, and in favour with God and men’” (Luke 2:52), notes Vogels.
Our world would be a different, more just and lov-ing, place if we connected with and cherished
lovely Lady Wisdom more abundantly.

©LPi
