L etter carriers’ commitment to helping put food on the tables of America’s hungry families has only grown, and

this, the 27th year of the Letter Carrier Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive, put our commitment on display.

On Saturday, May 11—Food Drive Day—letter carriers delivered on that commitment once again. They brought caring and compassion to their com-munities by collecting food in the na-tion’s largest one-day food collection effort. With the help of thousands of family members, friends and volun-teers, including fellow postal employ-ees in other crafts and in management, letter carriers in more than 1,400 branches collected bags of non-per-ishable food that postal customers left next to their mailboxes. Despite bad weather in many parts of the country, letter carriers persevered, filling local food pantries with the donations.

Held each year on the second Saturday in May, the NALC Food Drive comes at a critical time on the calen-

dar because food donations usually peak during the winter holidays, leav-ing community food pantries nearly empty by spring. Summer vacation from school also factors in, since free or reduced-cost school meals for the children of families in need tend to be unavailable.

“I am both humbled and proud each May as I see letter carriers demonstrate their support for the communities they serve,” NALC President Fredric Rolando said. “They always turn out to help the most vulnerable among us—people who may not be sure where their next meal will come from—at this critical time of year.”

The total amount collected national-ly stands at 76,139,814 pounds at press time, but results continue to roll in.

San Juan, PR Branch 869 topped the list of branch food collection totals by collecting more than 2.3 million pounds. The leading branches among different branch size groups, and results reported from every branch, are listed in the pages ahead.

for Community Services Christina Vela Davidson said. “You could see it on their faces: They are proud to serve their communities by helping to put food on the tables of neighbors who rely on it.”

None of this would have been possi-ble without the assistance of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive’s national part-ners. “These partners provide tangible support that helps to encourage the generous participation of our postal customers,” Rolando said.

Rolando thanked this year’s na-tional partners: the U.S. Postal Service (USPS), the United Food and Commer-cial Workers International (UFCW), the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Associa-tion, Valpak, United Way Worldwide, the AFL-CIO, Valassis, the Kellogg Co. and CVS Health.

UFCW’s sponsorship helped pay for the millions of postcards alerting residential postal patrons nationwide about the food drive. Valpak handled the printing of the cards and the logistics of getting them out to NALC branches. USPS generously donated the use of its G-10 postage permit for mailing the postcards and other food drive-related items, while Valassis’s Red Plum mailing, combined with the blue-envelope mailing by Valpak, put the food drive in the minds of grocery store shoppers, encouraging them to pick up a few extra items to donate. United Way helped to find volunteers nationwide. The Kellogg Co. donated 500,000 pounds of food nationwide and posted ads in stores and on social media. Rural letter carriers also partici-pated in the food drive in postal offices throughout the country.

Many other helpers, including American Postal Workers Union members, local bag sponsors and local volunteers who moved, sorted and dis-

tributed food, helped too. And per tradi-tion, Jeff Keane’s “Family Circus” special artwork in support of the food drive graced post offices and many other ven-ues. Rolando thanked Keane and also gave thanks to actor Edward James Olmos (“Battle-star Galactica,” “Stand and Deliver,”), whose father was a letter carrier, for again serving as the food drive’s celebrity spokesman.

Thanks to the work of NALC, national partners and local branches, hundreds of news outlets—print, web, radio and television—ran stories about the food drive both before and after May 11. CVS Pharmacy also ran in-store announcements to promote the drive to store customers.

The labor community also pro-vided vital support by sponsor-ing bags, gathering volunteers and getting the message out about the drive.

As soon as the day’s bounty began to fill postal facilities and food pantries, reports came in to the media from local com-munities expressing excitement and gratitude for the effort.

In Grand Rapids, MI, letter carriers collected more than 158,000 pounds of food.

“The partnership we have with the letter carriers is instrumental in the fight against hunger,” Ken Estelle, president and CEO of Feeding Ameri-ca West Michigan, wrote to the Grand Rapids, MI Rapidian website. “We are always amazed at how the Grand Rap-

ids community steps up to help their neighbors in need.” The food will go toward helping an estimated 285,000 people in Feeding America West Michigan’s service area who struggle with hunger.

The food drive brought in more than 184,000 pounds of food donations from across the Albuquerque, NM, area. The effort benefited Roadrunner Food Bank, which feeds 70,000 people weekly through its network of about 500 pantries and meal sites.

“It is truly an honor to receive this gift of food from our community. We are moved by the community’s gener-osity and involvement in our mis-sion,” president and CEO of Roadrun-ner Food Bank Mag Strittmatter said. “Thank you for making a difference and thank you for being our partner in solving hunger in our state. To our friends at the United States Postal Ser-vice, what a phenomenal job you did on behalf of people struggling to put food on the table. Your hard work year after year is inspiring.”

In Connecticut, residents of Wilton, Darien and Norwalk donated 68,390 pounds of food for Person-to-Person, a local charity that provides food for the hungry.

“With the food received from this incredible community effort, Person-to-Person will be able to meet the in-creased need that arises each summer when children are out of school and parents’ budgets are further stretched to feed families,” said Person-to-Person CEO Ceci Maher. “The food pantries are nearly empty leading up to the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.”

Marshalltown, IA, letter carriers collected more than 10,000 pounds of food.

“We would like to express our sin-cere appreciation to the Marshalltown city and rural letter carriers for their extra work in collecting and handling

those donated food items,” represen-tatives of the beneficiaries of the food donations, the Emergency Food Box and the Salvation Army, wrote to the Marshalltown Times-Republican. “It is due to each of you in our commu-nity, your generous demonstration of care and concern, that the emergency hunger needs of persons in Marshall County continue to be met. We are truly gratified by all your support and help.”

Letter carriers with the Jasper, Jen-nings and White Springs post offices in Hamilton County, FL, collected a re-cord 4,050 pounds of food. The bounty went to area food banks, church food donation stations and the United Way in several area counties.

“On behalf of the agencies and, ultimately, the families in need of the food, thank you to each and every postal patron for the food donations and to each and every letter carrier for proudly doing the extra work re-quired,” United Way Executive Director Jennifer Anchors said.

For the second year, letter carriers in Boise, ID, dyed their hair blue to bring attention to the food drive for the benefit of the Idaho Foodbank.

“I get a lot of customers in my busi-nesses who see me every day and then when I come in with blue hair, it’s just a shock and they’re always going, ‘Why is your hair blue?’ And then I get a chance to raise awareness,” Boise, ID Branch 331 member Adam Wallace told KTVB.com. “And it works. A lot of people don’t actually know about the food drive so it works, absolutely.”

“Hunger is an ongoing thing,” Idaho Foodbank spokesperson Tori Matthies said. “It’s a constant battle that we’re fighting, so it’s really important that we get good nutritious food throughout the entire year, especially for the kid-dos once school stops and the reduced lunches, they don’t have that anymore

CVS Health pitched in to support the food drive again this year.

In the weeks leading up to the drive, CVS Health played a public service announcement on its in-store radio channel twice an hour in more than 10,000 CVS Health stores throughout the United States and Puerto Rico. The company also publicized the event on its corporate intranet’s channel—available to CVS Health’s 240,000 employees—and on TV screens in all corporate hubs.

CVS Health also wrote two $10,000 checks to food banks, one to Gleaners Community Food Bank in Detroit and the other to Capital Area Food Bank in Washington, DC.

or the backpack program, so it’s super important that we keep this going, that we keep the food coming in.”

The shelves of the Lincoln County Food Bank in Ruidoso, NM, are overflowing with donated food from the food drive, food bank director Priscilla Terry told the Ruidoso News. She thanked all the letter carriers and donors, with a special shout-out to food drive coordinator Rich Adams of Alamagordo, NM Branch 3994.

“We have mail carrier Rich Adams to thank for this successful food dona-tion,” she said. “Rich has headed this effort for over 20 years. Thank you, Rich.”

Judy Seery, director of the Altamont Community Food Pantry in Altamont, NY, wrote a letter to the editor of the Altomont Enterprise praising letter car-riers for their efforts on Food Drive Day.

“The shelves at the Altamont Com-munity Food Pantry are now stocked with a wonderful variety of food,” Seery wrote. “In addition, many boxes were packed and stored, which will help meet the need over the coming months. Thank you to the hardwork-ing letter carriers for taking the extra time and effort needed to make this happen.”

Despite rain, Andalusia, AL, col-lected as much food as last year’s drive, thanks to 100 percent participation by letter carriers. “We didn’t have anybody that didn’t participate, they all enjoy doing it,” Andalusia Postmaster Diane Childers said. “So as far as on our end, we do whatever we can do to help.”

In Penn Hills, PA, letter carriers teamed with local emergency medical services providers to transport some of the food they collected in ambulances. The collection filled three ambulances and an SUV and still required a second delivery trip.

“There was so much food—we would have had a very difficult time getting it

to our building,” Joyce Davis, ex-ecutive director of the Lincoln Park Commu-nity Center, told the Greensburg, PA Tribune-Review. “So it was totally a blessing.”

The timing of the do-nations, she added, was crucial. “With school getting out soon, the kids are going to be home for summer. They’re going to need some extra food,” Davis said.

The food bank program manager of the Community Action Partnership of Coeur d’Alene, ID, said local car-riers collected more than 15,000 pounds of food for the food bank.

“We at Community Ac-tion Partnership sincerely appreciate the efforts of the local postal service em-ployees, the community for donating and our volun-teers for their hard work processing and presenting the food to those in need,” Darrell Rickard wrote in a letter to the Coeur d’Alene/Post Falls Press. “The 15,000 pounds of food, along with the daily help given to us by local busi-nesses, will allow us to continue to help end hunger in our community. Thank you all for your very special part in the fight to Stamp Out Hunger in our community!”

After a disappointing food drive result last year, residents of the Bloom-ington, IL, area stepped up donations, offering 55,000 pounds of food—up 10,000 from last year.

“We’re definitely excited with the results,” Bloomington Branch 522 food

drive committee member Nikki Wilson told The Pantagraph, a Bloomington-area newspaper.

“Those are good numbers,” said Jim Tuite, a volunteer for the St. Vincent de Paul Food and Clothing Pantry, one of the beneficiaries of the Bloomington food collection. “We are extremely grateful to the community and the let-ter carriers for doing this.”

More than 185,000 pounds of food were gathered in the Fort Myers/Cape Coral area of Florida.

“The generosity of our community is overwhelming,” Richard LeBer, president and CEO of the Harry Chapin Food Bank in Ft. Myers, told the Ft. My-ers News-Press. “We want those who volunteered their time and donated food to know we appreciate them, and that their support will go a long way toward helping our neighbors in need. We are also thankful for our partner-ship with the letter carriers and the United Way, which helps make this happen.”

Carriers in Rochester, MN, collected in excess of 63,000 pounds of food to benefit Rochester’s Channel One Regional Food Bank, which serves 3,500 households every month. With summer approaching and families fac-ing the loss of school-lunch programs and added expenses for child care, the donations are essential.

“The Stamp Out Hunger food drive comes at a time of year when we are

preparing for the increased needs of summer,” Channel One Executive Direc-tor Virginia Merritt told the Rochester Post-Bulletin. “This community repeat-edly steps up to help their neighbors

who face food insecurity, and we are grateful to the National Association of Letter Carriers and our local letter carriers for organizing an event of this magnitude that will provide food for these individuals.”

Food Drive Day brought in 42,000 pounds of food in the Athens, AL, area—a big jump from last year’s 30,000 pounds. The distribution of grocery bags this year made the dif-ference, Athens food drive organizer Tim Levan of Huntsville, AL Branch 462 told the Athens News Courier. But the generosity of Athens and Lime-stone County residents put them over the top. “The people of the Limestone community are usually some of the most charitable in North Alabama,” Levan said.

As the food poured in, Enid, OK, letter carriers were hopeful for a record collection. On Food Drive Day, they brought in 23,937 pounds of food, a yield that Katie Long, assistant direc-tor of Loaves and Fishes of Northwest Oklahoma, called “much higher than years past.” By accepting donations brought to Loaves and Fishes through the week of May 11, the food banks hoped to set a record for the drive.

That’s good news for local resi-dents struggling with food insecu-rity. According to the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma, one in seven area residents are unsure where their next meal will come from. That includes

Reactions also poured in on social media.

“Every USPS box you see is filled to the brim with non-perishable food from @StampOutHunger, and this is only a fraction of what was donated. In total, you helped raise over 326,000 pounds of food. That’s 108,000 more pounds than last year!” the Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee posted on Twitter.

United Way of the Plains in Wichita, KS, tweeted its gratitude to Wichita Branch 201: “Thanks to all who left food at their mailboxes earlier this month to help #StampOutHunger! The grand total collected was 101,107 pounds! All donations were given to the @KansasFoodBank. We’re proud to partner with @NALC_National – Branch #201 for this annual event.”

In Fall River, MA, the United Way of Greater Fall River expressed its delight over a big increase in food donations on Twitter. “THANK YOU Greater Fall

River! With your efforts during #Stamp- OutHunger, 82,150 pounds of food were distributed to local food pantries, 4000 pounds more than last year.”

“You stepped up to #StampOutHun-ger and ensured every person who is hungry receives the food they need. Thank you! We are thrilled to report that so far local letter carriers have collected enough food for over 550,000 meals!” tweeted Second Harvest Heartland of the Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN area.
