Hutt Central School Newsletter No 5 Term 2, 29 May - 2 June 2017 Talofa Lava, Cross Country Monday was a fantastic day for Cross-Country running and I would like to acknowledge the effort and energy that our students put into their races. I would especially like to acknowledge those students who set themselves a goal with their race and strived to meet these. In particular, Devesh Rattan, Mako Leslie, Bailey Rose-Gear, Emma McLaughlan. Thank you to all of the parents and caregivers who supported us at Sladden Park, thank you to the staff and volunteers who contributed to a great event. Sandpit Our sandpit has finally received it’s sand and we have been trialling the space this week. We are going to hold an opening and blessing of our sandpit on Monday 12 June at 9am. Community Survey Congratulations to our winning families who took the time to fill in our community survey. 1. Anna and John Grant 2. Brigid and Matthew Davidson The Board of Trustees will analyse the data and information and inform the community Mid-Year reporting We have experienced some complications with the development of our mid-year report this year. As a result, you will receive your child’s mid-year report on Friday 28 July (End of Week 1 Term 3) and we will hold interviews on Wednesday 2 August and Thursday 3 August (Week 2 Term 3). Leanne Mahoney Leanne had an operation on Monday and is recuperating at the moment. Please keep her in your thoughts and wish Leanne well with her recovery. New Entrant Class We will be opening another New Entrant class in Room 8 on Tuesday 6 June. Sarah Ronchetti will be the teacher in this class. Great work this week: Jacob Bowen shared his fantastic writing with me. I loved his description: Fast, fast and fast spins my fidget spinner. It is black like night. Braxtyn Kent shared his awesome writing with me. I was impressed with the language he used: Dig! Dig! Went the shovels. The sand was wet. I dug a hole. It was deep. I also helped Kaia. I liked playing in the sandpit. Wilkin Porter used great punctuation in his writing to help me understand his message: First the bang (big). Then we were off. I was going 11 or 12 kilometres an hour. I went and turned the corner at 9 kilometres per hour. Then up the hill. Then down the hill. Then, I… was… going… down the hill at… 20 kilometres an hour on to the finish line. That was a good race! Dante Johnson-Bell has been reading extremely well this week. He is using his strategies to check that he is reading accurately. Tackle Rugby A number of our students have expressed an interest in playing tackle rugby during lunchtimes. Students are able to play providing they have a mouthguard, change of clothes and sports shoes / boots. I will supervise the students on a Friday lunchtime. This is an optional activity and all players will be trained in contact and tackling before playing. If students have the equipment required then I will consider this permission to play. Kia Ora Hutt Central School Whanau, Well hasn’t this year gone quickly with us already coming into June? With this weekend being a long weekend, the board of trustees hope all of our tamariki and their families will have the opportunity to spend some quality time together. Since our last update, the school has really continued with a great range of activities for our students, with a continued focus on our writing and reading in particular. It was fantastic to see a great community support once again for our cross country this week, on a day which was perfect for running. Well done to all the staff and to those who supported this event and in particularly the students who put everything into a great day’s effort – tino pai everyone. Furthermore, the board would like to take this opportunity to thank parents and everyone who participated in the school community survey. Your views and input will help shape the strategic direction of the school, by assisting the board to set key areas of focus for the upcoming years. Your feedback will be combined with the visioning work the community did last year. Once reviewed, these key areas of focus will be presented to the school staff for their input on how and what we can achieve in these areas and what it looks like to the community. Looking ahead, the board and the staff will be diarising a day of reflection later in the year to finalise the school’s plan for the new year. The board at this stage are pencilling in the 24th of October for this workshop. Meanwhile, a full review of our school policies which includes moving to an easily accessible and searchable online platform has been completed. Whilst policy review is of course ongoing, we are excited to provide the community with clear policies, that are easy to find and that better support the Hutt Central whanau. The great part of this, is that you are able to find up to date and relevant information on subjects explaining how we do things at school and why. We are intending to go live in June and will keep you updated. From a wider perspective, recent changes that parents may be aware of, is that the Education (Update) Amendment Act 2017 came into effect on the 19th of May 2017. The new Act introduces the setting of objectives for the early childhood and compulsory education system and a new stand-alone document called the statement of National Education and Learning Priorities (NELP). This document is what the Government of the day will use to set its education priorities. The Act is also designed to help schools to deliver an education for New Zealand’s children and young people and introduces a range of ways that the Ministry of Education can give quicker support to schools to help get them back on track. I have attached a link below so you may read a little more on the new Act: https://education.govt.nz/ministry-of-education/legislation/the-education-update-amendment-act/ In regards to the board setup and as you may know, Crane Amaru has recently stepped down. Crane has been an important member, who has aided the board on the work they have done to date and his experience will be missed. The board would like to thank Crane and his whanau for their ongoing commitment to the school. With a board member stepping down, work has begun to develop what the school and the board need to complement the current governance composition. The board shall be looking to appoint a new member in order to ensure the governance of the school has a full complement. Finally, if whanau could please keep an eye on some of the activities the fundraisers are doing for the school and where possible we would encourage your participation. These events are great for the school enabling us to fund activities and learning tools for the classes. It is also a fantastic opportunity to meet other parents and those who work and support our school. Thank you everyone and nga mihi Wayne Goodfellow, Board Chair

Room 6 enjoying our new sandpit

I liked digging a big hole in the sandpit. - Baylee Packer I liked playing in the sandpit and I liked playing with the Kowhanga. The Kowhanga is so fun. - Elizabeth Lloyd I liked the sandpit because I like building big mountains. The sand is soft. - Emily Parry Headlice

Some classes have been reporting an influx of head lice this term. Please be diligent in checking your children's hair and treating accordingly to ensure that these can be effectively era dicated. If you are unsure what to look for and how to treat them please look at the following website.

“I focus on creating tailor-made looks for everyday or special events.

My projects often include specific shoot styling, personal style seminars and new season launches, and my clients include

businesses, individuals and print magazines.

While I am comfortable working on commercial large scale shoots, the projects I find most satisfying are the personal

transformations. Incorporating vintage touches into the modern wardrobe and ‘budget-buys’ are my speciality.”
