The young footballers using the field atBartram’s lane (off Crescent West) arecontinuing to make good progress. Asmany of you will know they play onSunday mornings and are well worthwatching. Currently the under-11 teamsare playing in the Watford FriendlyLeague in 9- a- side matches. Their yellowand blue club kits are provided by the club(thanks to the generosity of theirsponsors). The club is a feeder for Wingate and
Finchley Football Club. Team membershave the opportunity to transfer to theWingate youth section at U13 wherethey can play at a significantly higherlevel than the Watford Friendly league. The club is always looking out for newmembers as well as team managers, volunteers to referee, helpers to set upthe ground (and put everything backafterwards).Assistance with administrative work
such as sending out result cards, maintaining a contact list helping withtrial days and social events would also bea great help.Should youwish tomake contact with the

After our article in the last newsletter, we would like tothank everyone who replied and showed their support tothis project. Whilst presenting this project we have beenasked how much the project will cost the community togive our area a great playground. Although we haveexplained this during our Public Meeting and at theFireworks Show we hope this article will help further. Ourproject’s aims are to:Create a modern playground accessible to all Hadley
Wood children up to the age of 12 yrsCreate a social environment for all Hadley Wood
families to come and enjoy the activities. To ensure this project is a success we have looked at
three options:The “Ultimate Playground” – this is the playground
which has been extended (as many of you have seen bythe ropes near the current playground). Plans wereshown in the last issue and include lots of extra playequipment. Speaking to the Council, other similarcharities and developers, this playground would befinanced predominantly through Grants. However tomake us eligible and improve our chances of successwe need to raise funds within the community. We havebeen advised to raise £20-30,000. Some of the Grantapplications have already been made including The
6
London Marathon Trust, Sita, Tottenham Hotspurfoundation and Arsenal Trust.“Renovation of the Current Playground” – this
playground will take the existing size and fix the flooringunder all the current equipment whilst also upgrading thetoddler and older play centres which are the main focus ofthe playground. As this cost will be mainly from within thecommunity the amount needed to be raised us will be inthe region of £35,000.“Anything is possible” – this last option shows the
community that the more money raised, the better theplayground will be for the community. We will continue towork hard to make the playground the best possible placefor our children to play. Already there are plans in place tostart raising the money for this project. Keep watching thisspace. We are aware this is not an infinite project andonce a substantial amount of money has been raisedwithin the community and with Grant funding a specialPublic Meeting will be held so that the community can helpdecide the future of the playground. This is everybody’splayground and we want everybody in the community toenjoy it. For further information contact us [email protected] or call 07949 073536.Thank you again for all your support,
Laura & Maria.

FIREWORKS NIGHT.Its bonfire night again andafter a week of direweather warnings from theexperts the evening is nicedry and autumnal. A coolnortherly wind keepseverybody’s collars up butthere is a good turn outand it’s great to see somany Hadley Woodfamilies there. The wholearea has been preparedby the superhuman effortsof groundsmen Kamil andThomas, the bonfire built(with the usual expert helpfrom David Hawkins), andthe organisation laid on byGraham Sharp, Chairman, and Lisa Winston,Managerof our local Hadley WoodAssociation. The fireworks, music, Red Cross, thestalls, risk assessments, marshalls, walkie talkies,
and licences have all been bookedand the site approved by Mr Johnsonfrom Enfield Council’s H&Sdepartment. The advertising proveddifficult. Pinning adverts to local treesis no longer allowed. Statons, as ever, come to the rescue with their hugeyellow signs not to mention their verygenerous sponsorship. Finally thealways helpful Bob and Sangita at
7
Londis agree to sell the tickets. Theevening gets under way. A last minuterush at the entrance gates puts thestart back by about ten minutes butGreg Breskal, Duncan Jackson andKevin Beasant on the gate somehowmanage to get almost everybody inbefore the first rocket goes up.Graham on the PA system keeps thechildren involved by his regularenquiries. ‘Hello children. Are youenjoying the waiting?’ Nooooooooo isthe reply from a hundred smallvoices. Are you looking forward to thefireworks? Yeeeeeeees. comes backthe chorus. Back in the bar Lisa SarahCarol Penny and Jeanette, barmaidsfor the evening, maintain thereputation of that much lovedprofession with quick service andeven quicker banter. Simon, theTennis Club President, and Stevemanage to keep control of the team, selling in the process about 400 cupsof mulled wine and a small lake ofbeer. Down the entry road come thefamilies. Lots of small mischievousfaces, coloured light wands, peopleeating sausages hamburgers, drinking coffee, meeting friends, jostling, laughing, hitching lifts on theGhost Train and trying out the stalls.Music blaring out from the six hugeamplifiers, dark figures movingaround the upper field preparing thefireworks, and in front the menacingblack outline of the huge bonfire. Red‘laser’ beams are jumping andzeroing in on the Guy. In front of therope stand the marshalls in their Hi-Viz. yellow jackets. Graham, the boss,is next to the PA system, with TasosRichard Whitton, James Winston,
8
Sena, Frederic Marques and your editorgiving the cordon a nice alliance of Anglo,Cypriot Turkish and Gallic protection for thefamilies. Small cheeky voices call out. ‘When’sit going to start mister?’ Hey mister. Could yousit down. We can’t see through you (laughter).
‘Hey Mr Yellowcoat? What time is it now.? I’m cold etc etc. Overin front of the Association Centre is Maria and Laura’s stallshowing details of the proposed playground improvements tomany interested residents and donors. Our local police from theSNT arrive. Police Sergeant Peter Moxham towering overeveryone, Kelvin Jones the PCSO and Inspector Nicki Reynoldsmixing with the crowd. All there to keep an eye on things andvery welcome too. Then the fireworks start. Bomblets, rockets, huge umbrellas of coloured lights in the sky are punctuated withhands on ears explosions. Smoke drifts towards the crowd butdisperses quickly in the wind. Sparks blown towards the schoolare watched with concern by the organisers and in fervent hopeby the pupils. Finally the display is finished and the families startto go home. A small crowd of teenagers move up to stand andsocialise around the embers of the fire. Its all over safely foranother year. Only John Leatherdale’s photos are left to recordthe event. Plus about three tons of assorted rubbish, spent
fireworks, wads, cans, bottles, wrapping and bits of plastic. Sowho came for the clear- up nextmorning? Kamil and Thomas werethere at 0730 with CharlotteBeasant (aged 12 years) and bossGraham Sharp. Not enough. So tryand be there to help next year if youcan.Rod Armstrong

The annual Firework party at the Centreprovides our main focus for fund raisingactivities this term. Our children helpedto make the Guy which looked majesticsitting on top of the enormous pile ofwood. The weather was kind, thefireworks and bonfire were wonderful.Throughout the evening staff andparents were kept busy face painting, running stalls and organising the Kid’sCafé.A BIG thank you to Selbourne Dental

In April, a 15-year-old calledNegus McCleanwas stabbedand killed whiletrying to preventa gang stealinghis brother’sphone. In July, two rival gangspublicly fought
with machetes, knives and guns. Themembers of these gangs wereyouths, and a sixteen year old wasstabbed in the hand. These two harrowing cases have
three striking similarities. The first isthat they both involve knife crime. The second is that both involveyouths. The third is that bothoccurred in our borough of Enfield.Knife crime has become an all too
familiar occurrence. Knife attacks areno longer shocking; and havebecome a permanent fixture in thelocal paper. Almost every week thereis a story of knife crime that has yetagain blighted the community.Enfield, of course, is not alone infeeling the devastating affects of knifecrime but it is a problem that isbecoming synonymous with theLondon Borough due to its frequency.Against this background together
with my constituency neighbour Nickde Bois MP we have championed the
need to get tougher on knife crime. Ihave been able to draw on myexperience as a solicitor in youthcourts for the last 17 years seeingknife crime as a ‘blind spot’ when itcomes to sentencing. Together wehave made a compelling case toministers for change to legislation. We have now had accepted anamendment to the Sentencing Bill tohave mandatory sentences handeddown to offenders aged 16 and 17and over who use knives in athreatening manner. I recognise thatinterventions need to happen awhole lot earlier to tackle the knifeculture that has developed in Enfieldand elsewhere. However the reality isthat any youth wielding a knife andthreatening someone’s life shouldalready expect to be locked up forlonger than 2 months.Threatening someone with a knife
is a very serious offence thatdeserves to be punished with alengthy sentence. The new lawsimply makes it clear that if you are16 or above you must go to prison fora minimum time.In the wake of the August riots and
with escalating knife crime the nationwas shaking its head in disapprovalat Enfield. Now with what we now call
Enfield’s law the nation can nod itshead in approval.David BurrowesMember of Parliament for EnfieldSouthgate

Dear EditorI was delighted to read the article regarding the proposed improvement andexpansion of the Hadley Wood Playground.I first moved to Hadley Wood in January 1972 and having brought up my two
daughters who regularly used the Playground I am only sorry that theproposed renovation was not considered many years sooner. The playground, although enjoyed by many children in Hadley Wood, does not offer muchchoice. How wonderful that these young mothers have formed a Committeeto try and make better use of the Playground by suggesting not onlyexpanding the area but by their choice of layout and new facilities. This willenable many more children of all ages to enjoy playing together in safe andenvironmentally friendly surroundings. What sound can be better than that ofchildren laughing and enjoying themselves in the open air. Looking at thelayouts of the proposed playground I think it will enable children to use theirimagination and learn to play and interact with each other. It will also providean opportunity for young families to meet and socialise together. What is more exciting is that children will want to play in their new playground
– far more healthy for them than sitting inside at home playing computergames on the television. Good luck to all of you on the Committee. Yours etcSandra Kingston
