In the middle of Sweden, only a few hours north of Stockholm, are the regions of Hälsingland and Gästrikland. Here the forests become deeper and the waters become wilder, and the vibrancy of the city meets the more peaceful life of the countryside. And if you you’d like to – and dare – you can experience a close encounter with a major predator or an elk.
In this part of Sweden, excitement and tranquillity go hand in hand. Just how adventurous your visit will be depends on the activities you choose to take part in, and we have a vast selection available for you to choose from. Perhaps you would prefer hours of relaxation next to a glassy lake or an adventurous mountain bike ride up and down forest-clad mountains? In Mid Sweden, winters are snowy but inviting, and you will be able to enjoy fantastic skiing at one of our ski resorts or exciting dog sledding trips. Because the distan-ces are relatively short, there will be plenty of time for you to try the many wonderful things on offer. JäRVSÖBACKEN All kinds of winter activities
Entirely new ski slopes on the south side of the mountain and new chalets for the 2011/2012 season make Järvsö-backen even more attractive than before. Children are guests of honour at Järvsöbacken and have their own big ski and play area. Also, there are plenty of other winter activities in and around the village of Järvsö. For those of you who prefer overland skiing there are no fewer than 80 trails in Harsa, a mere ten minutes away by car. Järvsö has a large selection of chalets, apartments and hotels to choose from.

Kungsberget is just a little over two hours up the motor-way from Stockholm. There’s skiing for everybody and one of Sweden’s best terrain parks with rails, boxes and jumps. The little ones have their own Happy Park to practice in. The closest big city Gävle which is only 45 minutes away by car, which makes combining your visit with a little shopping and entertainment easy. There are several alternative forms of accommodation in Kungsberget such as apartments, semi-detached houses and chalets, all of which can be booked on the Kungsberget website.

Experience prison conditions of the past in two unique prison buildings. Follow history from the old castle jail with its underground dungeons, dating back to the mid-1600s, to one of Sweden’s first penitentiaries, dating from 1847. you will witness the Swedish prison system, which developed from a period of public enforced shame and corporal punishment to a time when prisoners were isolated from society, in what we now call solitary confinement. A visit to the Prison Museum leaves no one unaffected.
