From the Rabbi’s Study . . .
“Mishenichnas Adar marbin b’simchah”
BT, Ta’anit 29a
“When Adar enters, joy increases.”
This teaching from the Babylonian Talmud has remained with us for centuries. Adar, the month in
which we celebrate Purim – and the saving of our people from destruction – is a great time to rejoice and
celebrate.
This year, at Temple Shalom, we had a lot of joy during the two months of Adar. For starters, we had a
Temple congregant win the Stock Market Raffle. Yeah, Gabby Kangisser! Mazel Tov to you.
We also had a lively and well attended Purim celebration, with 19 of our youngest congregants (not to
mention their parents, grandparents and friends) having fun spinning graggers during the schpiel and
playing carnival games. Our sanctuary and social hall were alive with activity – as it should be on Purim.
More than 80 people attended.
The contributions from so many of you made this celebration successful. When religious school teachers,
parents, students and congregants come together for the benefit of our congregation, the results are tre-
mendous. Whether it was setting up or cleaning up, putting on the schpiel, making, baking, ordering or
bringing food, running booths or taking pictures, the collective efforts of everyone led to a memorable
event.
But the joy at Temple Shalom did not end at the close of our Purim celebration. The next night, on Sun-
day evening, our social hall was again alive with both members of our congregation and residents of the
greater Wheeling community. More than 50 people attended our social action lecture series, discussing
the need for, and benefits of, recycling in our community. The conversations after the program continued
on for a long while. People were engaged, thinking and feeling good about ways to improve our city. In
fact, the program was so inspiring that one woman called Temple Shalom on Monday asking if she could
be added to our mailing list for next year’s social action lecture series.
Together, we can do what we could never do alone. We are stronger, more productive and more creative
together. While I would be remiss if I did not give special thanks to Charity Porbin for chairing our
Purim celebration, and Lee Chottiner for chairing our social action committee and lecture series, the
truth is, our synagogue was a full, and joyous place because of the efforts of our members, so to all of you,
I say, thank you, too.
May the remaining days of Adar bring you much joy and happiness!!!
Lee, Noa and I join together in wishing you and yours a zeisen Pesach.
L’shalom,
Rabbi Beth Jacowitz Chottiner

From the President’s Desk . . .
The question on everyone’s mind right now is, “Where are we on getting a new Rabbi?” Unfortunately, the answer is no different now than it was in last month’s HaKol. However, I promised to keep you updated and I will. We have applied for a student rabbi as a transitional measure for a year. So far we have not heard whether or not our application has been accepted. If it hasn’t, we are eligi-ble to apply for an interim rabbi from CCAR. We missed the deadline to get a newly or-dained rabbi and, given the time factor, it is probably best to have a transitional person here for a year rather than feel pressured into hiring someone who might not be a good fit for our congregation. Many thanks to the following members who have agreed to serve on the Search Committee: Amy Humphrey, Mia Porter, Isaac Levenson, Andy Schreiber, Karen Kangisser, and Jonathan Lief. As we move towards finding candidates to interview, either for a one-year position or for a permanent position, we will continue to keep you informed and look for your input in helping us to make this important decision. Finally, I’d like to take a moment to say thank you to our soloist, Kate Voorhees, who has recently given her notice to the Board. Kate’s final Shabbat will be June 10. Kate writes in her resignation letter, “While I know that I have been an employee at Temple Shalom, I wish you all to know that I have never felt that way, but have, instead, felt ac-cepted as part of the Temple family. I have worshipped fully in song, scripture, and spo-ken word virtually every Friday night, as well as the High Holidays, for almost 18 years. I thank you for the opportunity to enrich my spiritual life in ways too numerous to list.” We will miss your beautiful voice and your presence at our services, Kate, and we wish you well. Shalom, Perri

Yahrzeit Notification
“Yahrzeit” is a Yiddish word that means “time of year.” It is a tradition in our faith to mark the passing of loved ones during the “time of year” in which the passing occurred. The observance often includes reciting Kad-dish, lighting a Yahrzeit candle, and performing an act of tzedakah. In order to assist members in this solemn observance, the Temple will be mailing Yahrzeit notifications to those who have lost loved ones.. Our Yahrzeit list is approximately 86 pages long. Sadly, many of the Yahrzeit names are not matched with current members. Therefore, I would ask that you take a moment to write down the names of loved ones who have passed and your relationship to them. Please mail your list to Trina at the Temple so that we may update our records. Thank you. Name Relationship (i.e. mother, father, brother, etc.)
