An Eagle Project by Peter Argue, Troop 17 7

Presented to the Hampton Heritage CommissionSeptember 2003

Hampton New Hampshire, in 1841:An Inventory of Houses

Foreword

This project began as an effort to make an inventory of the older buildings in the town of Hampton . Aftersome consideration, we decided to use the 1841 map as the framework for our inventory, since eac hhouse on the map was labeled with the name of its owner . We would try to document all the buildingsfrom that map which are still standing . The pages in this book are the result of that effort .

In attempting to locate the buildings, volunteers researched the houses from the historical source savailable in the Lane Library and the Historical Society . Dow's "History of Hampton" proved to beinvaluable in the identification of the houses, since he had been the major author of the 1841 map . Eachhouse we found was photographed and briefly described, and, if possible, the names given on the 1806and 1892 town maps were listed . The only sure way to identify the early history of an old building is, o fcourse, to research the deeds for the property or to undertake an architectural study . Both of thesemethods were outside the scope of this project and have been left for future research .

A project like this is never truly finished . Identification errors could occur, despite the best efforts of th eresearchers, if a building was moved or so completely remodeled that its true date was not recognized .In a few cases the identification of the early owner represents an educated guess on the part of th eresearch team. However, all of these buildings have been entered into a database which will allow fo rinformation to be added or edited, thus making it possible to keep the inventory up to date as futur einvestigation adds to our knowledge of the early buildings of Hampton .

Many people contributed to this project . Among the surveyors were Scout leaders from Troop 177 an dlocal historians belonging to the Hampton Heritage Commission and the Hampton Historical Society .Homeowners and the Hampton Assessor's Office gave additional help which contributed to the historica lcontent of the inventory . Another contributor was Fuji Photo Film U .S.A., Inc . which donated black andwhite film .

This project is the start of a much larger one to complete a survey of the entire town of Hampton . Thi sresponsibility is that of the Heritage Commission . As for the future of this project, several features coul dbe added . One is a booklet of the buildings in the inventory . This document could include buildin ginventory sheets, maps, and further historical information . Another idea would be to create a version o fthe database to be distributed to the library and other organizations that do not have the specific softwar eused to create the original work. This effort would allow a wider availability of the collected information.
