I would like to thank all our supportersand sponsors and helpers who made the

Hampden celebrations possible.Tere were 500 people at the marketwith displays and talks and the showingo a lm about Hampden on Saturdaymorning. Nearly 100 people turned outor the rereading o the Proclamation.Jacqui Dean, our MP, did a magnicent

    job o that, having

    received the scriptonly minutes beore.Our mayor , AlexF a m i l t o n , d i d awonderul job as MCand mentioned manypeople by name.

    I think Alex and

Heather must havemade a special tripto Brazil and beencloned. How elsedo you explain theirpresence in Kurow,Palmerston, Hampden, Oamaru, councilcommittees, council meetings and

writing submissions to government, allat the same time? And they never orgetwhere they are or what they are there

or. I can do that just by going into thenext room.

A special thanks to our special guests.Alexs ancestor was one o the irstcouncillors. Ian and Harry and LesMurcott had the rst mayor and one othe original councillors in their amily.Tegrandson o the rst own Clerk, WilliamEverest, was present. Hilda Nicolson is,

    we think, the oldest

resident and her amilyhas been here rom theearly days. We owe alot o our knowledgeo Hampden past toHilda. We meant tohave Hugh and rixieMuldrew on stage

as the second to lastmayor and mayoressbut Hughie, keeping totradition, was a bit late.Keep it up Hughie. Iyou are late enough or

your own uneral, you mightnt have togo.We should have had Gloria Colloty

on stage, also, as she is descended romWilliam Haberield, one o the irstEuropeans in our district.

Following rain on the night ofNovember 4 there was some slumpingat Hampden Landfill. Hampden

Landll lies on top of a slip plane andthis rain had two effects:1. it increased the weight on theslope, and2. it made the silt stone contact layerwet and prone to slip.

The slump has shunted theearthworks at the toe of the works, and

buckled the toe being constructed. The earthworks engineer visited

the site the following day and aplan was devised to deal with thisproblem. A meeting was held onsite on Monday November 9thwith Whitestone Contracting Ltdand Rooney Earthmoving Ltd, theengineering consultant and theSolid Waste Ofcer. An agreement

was reached on what needed to bedone.

The lower part of the road willneed to be reconstructed as theslump fractured the track making it

unsuitable for heavy plant. Once thishas been completed, the earthworkswill progress in short 10m sectionswhich will be ecavated, trimmedto the desired gradient, geofabriclaid, and rock protection placed. Then the net 10m section willbe trimmed etc. This will require

close cooperation between bothcontractors. Whitestone ContractingLtd and Rooney Earthmoving Ltdhave been working well togetherso this work is epected to proceedsmoothly.

This added work wil l incuradditional costs which will come out

of the $100,000 contingency thatCouncil prudently included in theprojects budget. Overall the projectis proceeding well and is epected tobe completed by Christmas.

O the committee installed at the lastgeneral meeting, three couples, theJohnstons, Millers and Selwoods havecontinued the Halls administration andmaintenance or six years. hey wererecently joined by Colin Jack and BentJansen. Annette Selwood took over assecretary/treasurer almost a year aerthat general meeting. Margaret Johnstonwas chairperson or the six years until sheresigned in October 2009, and consequentlyI was voted to nish the chair. o Margaretand Annette, special thanks.

Tere have been quite a ew eventsat the hall recently including arewellsto Hugh and rixie Muldrew, andIsabel McCone. Te Jubilee or the Hallcelebration as a seated ticketed dinnerwas a success and greatly enjoyed aswas the recent debate and dinner. Othercommunity potluck dinners were held orMargarets and Joes golden wedding, thehalls new oor surace, and Hampdens130th anniversary celebration.

Coupled with the halls 50th, twoconier trees were planted on each side o

the ront entrance, and to commemorateArmistice Day, two deciduous treeswere planted in the Memorial Grove,

jointly with the Hampden Moeraki areapromotions group. Hampden schoolpupils helped with the plantings, and withthe barbeque aterwards. An honoursboard or WW1 was investigated but our

eorts drew little support rom OamaruRSA, so momentum or this projectdiminished. An old Lodge membershonours board was ound under the stage

and was sent to North Otago Museum.Fity padded chairs were purchasedsecondhand or the hall.

A major roo leak was caused byheavy rain one Anzac Day resulting ina lood over the main loor and sideoyer. Repairs were made to the roo andgutters. Te oor had become worn andbecause o the eect o the ooding, wedecided it was time to rejuvenate it withan oil/urethene sealer, applied by teamso volunteers.

New carpet was laid in the side oyerthrough to the waiting and doctorsrooms. Te doctors room was urtherupgraded with a new hand basin, waterheater, plumbing and cupboards.

Heat pumps were installed in theconcert hall in response to commentsabout the cold. We hope more use is madeo the hall as the new heaters have madeit much warmer now.

Te library had three coordinatorsduring this time and currently theposition is lled by our enthusiastic AlisonMacavish with a team o assistants.

Alison and Oamaru library managerLorraine Weston-Webb are keen to installa computer to give access to WaitakiDistrict Librarys online database andpublic access to the Internet. Tis idea isbeing considered by the hall committee.Lorraine is going to promote this conceptto the next committee. We need to be

careul about where the liability andresponsibility sit should we decide todo this.

Hampden Community Energy Societywas ormed during this period, and hasbecome the most requent hall user.Among its achievements the groupinitiated the idea o a survey o residentsto get ideas rom the community orimprovements to, and use o the hall. Tiscommittee has agreed to hold a publicmeeting in February 2010 to discuss thesuggestions resulting rom the survey. Aspin-o rom the Energy group has beenthe regular monthly markets at the hall.

Te toilets at the rear o the hall whichwere made over to public use about tenyears ago have been aggravating thecommittee and hall users. We considerthat sharing with public is undesirable, andthat the acilities and cleaning standardsare unacceptable in the precinct o thehall. Even or public toilets in the Waitaki

Tere are many ways o trying to deal withthose annoying plants that grow so readily

just where we dont want them! All have pros and cons and dierent

methods suit dierent garden areas anddierent people.

A trowel is very eective, especially whenall weeds are removed rom the garden. It istime consuming.

A push hoe is quick and eective, but onlyi done regularly when weeds are small, orbigger weeds are picked up and removed.

Spraying is good or drives, paths, edges, around trees and woody shrubs.Care is neededor saety and to prevent dri damaging otherplants. Spray needs six hours drying to betaken up by the plant beore being rainedon and generally the longer it takes to work, the better the kill. Sprayed weeds can look

unsightly or quite a while.Weed mat is initially expensive, but goodor large areas. It lasts well, but weeds can stillgrow on top rom windblown seed.

Newspaper suppresses weeds well, butweeds will still grow in the medium on top.

Bark needs constant attention as weedswill grow through it. I this gets out o hand,it can become quite a problem.

Pea straw/hay needs to be redone atintervals. It discourages weeds, keepsmoisture in the soil and adds organic matter. It can introduce dierent weeds into thatarea.

Weeds like couch, dock and yarrow can bepartly controlled by spraying with herbicides, but the most eective way to get rid o theseweeds is by deep digging out. Dispose o the

roots by burning or in bins. Good luck withyour weeding!

I believe there used to be a cricket match

between locals and visitors. Can we revivethat tradition? Can the locals with someyoung guns rom the local high schools, challenge the Cribbies and Campers tocricket, beach volleyball (yeah!), tennis, bowls and a tug o war?

Be a good sport, come or the sportingun at the beach on Boxing Day and New

    CHALLENGE

A challenge match was playedbtwit elevens of the two clubs onthe Cricket Ground at Hampden, on

Wednesday, the 22nd inst., when thevictory was with the Waikouaiti Clubby one run only. In giving the scorewe should remark that the Hampdeneleven showed remarkably good play inthe rst innings, but very poor play in the

second, while their opponents played asteady, uniform game, which carried the

day. The score was as follows:

    In the evening the Waikouaiti

eleven were entertained at dinner atthe Hampden Hotel (Murcotts). About

35 sat down. The chair was lled by

Mr. T. Whinan, and the vice-chair byMr. T. Reynolds. The usual loyal andpatriotic toasts were given; then TheHighest Scorer, The healths of theWaikouaiti and Hampden Elevens,The Host, & c., were duly given withall the honours. A very pleasant eveningwas spent. The dinner and accessorieswere all that could be desired.

Later in the evening a ball cameoff in the same place, at which alarge assemblage of the fair se ofHampden were present.

pondering whether it would be nice ifa return match could be organised nextyear between the rival villages 135 yearslater. We are sure we can level the score.

Pets' DayBelow are some extracts rom the seniorclass pet day stories:

'Its pets' day. We were waiting or almosta year or this one. As we were playing onthe Hampden school playground, the bellrang. Everyone rushed into the class. MrL said, It's pets' day and in a minute weare going to see Mrs Sheat and her blackhorse.' (by Marcus Hazlewood)

'Shirley Sheat came on her horse to showus what to do when around horses. Shirleyshorse was called helma. It was big so

    it made hugeootprints inthe grass. Inthe aternoonh e a p s o animals startedto arrive, likehorses, dogs,cats, rabbits,m i c e a n dbirds, Most othe childrenbrought dogs

I thought that the roosters were prettynoisy and or some reason Milo keptstomping. I thought that the cats were sador angry because they had to be put intoa cage. Out o all the cats Ben Hooperswas the biggest and attest. (by Mikayla

McKerrows PondOur last visit on November 6 to the pond wasone o the best ones yet. Te children were
