HAPPY 152ND BIRTHDAY

CANADA

Are we proud … well I guess we are – eh?

Canada Day - July 1, 2019 - the national day of Canada, is a federal statutory holiday celebrating the anniversary of the July 1, 1867, enactment of the British North America Act, 1867

(today called the Constitution Act, 1867), which united three colonies into a single country called Canada within the British Empire. Originally called Dominion Day, the holiday was renamed in 1982, the year the Canada Act was passed. When Dominion Day was officially established, it wasn’t observed by many

Canadians, who considered themselves to be British citizens. Dominion Day started to catch on when the 50th anniversary of the confederation rolled around in 1917. In 1946, a bill was put forth to rename

Dominion Day, but arguments in the House of Commons over what to call the holiday stalled the bill. The 100th anniversary in 1967 saw the growth of the spirit of Canadian patriotism and Dominion Day

celebrations really began to take off. Although quite a few Canadians already called the holiday Canada Day (Fête du Canada), the new name wasn’t formally adopted until October of 1982.

TO THE RESIDENTS OF WAWOTA & AREA: Unfortunately, we have come to a time in our history where full-time ambulance service is no longer available in our community.

We simply cannot maintain full-time service with the few people that are available. We will continue to offer first responder and limited ambulance service for as long as we are able.

Your EMS Staff: Dianne Bunz, Darren Olson, Deborah Saville, Sandra Murray, Philip Heinrichs, Andrea Smyth.

Anyone interested in being a part of the EMS team here in Wawota should contact Dianne Bunz @ 1-306-577-8445.

WANDERING THOUGHTS

How do you measure 36 years of continued musical entertainment … well, the Hints of Harmony singing group have accomplished this feat – and we’re pretty sure are looking to the future. An appreciative crowd were on hand on the 21st at the United Church to enjoy the performance – complete with special guests. Congratulations to Nicki and her cast – you make us proud!

We are told that the intersection at Hall Street & West Railway Avenue was the scene of (expensive – for some) traffic action one morning a week or so ago! This is always a busy spot – especially on school days – a 4-way stop. Law enforcement were present – surprising several motorists – for those who think “laws are made to be broken” may have seen an entry on their debit account – unplanned!

And on the topic of motorists and travel, are you getting whiplash from trying to keep up to the yo-yo of gas prices? We are amazed that they are almost half-reasonable with a summer long weekend upon us – if it was an oversight, we like it!

Took an opportunity to “look outside the box” last Sunday and do our summer trip to the always awesome Qu’Appelle Valley – the variations of green coupled with the blue water of the lakes among the contours of the hills never ceases to amaze us. Only one other time compares – actually surpasses – that is the autumn tour – a must every year!

On our travels, we see mowing of ditches along the highways and grid roads being done. We find this to be taking place earlier than normal (by a month)? When mentioned to others, we were advised that this is not unusual – however we hate to tell them they are wrong – but we don’t think they’re right!

The recent welcome rains have certainly changed the landscape -- seeing some fall rye/winter wheat heading out – as well clover and broom grass along roadways in bloom. If only fields of tame hay couldn’t grow as lush.

When is the last time you saw an optical illusion? For us, there is one about a mile north of Langbank on the west side of #9 highway. An old grain bin/shed? has been on a “mean lean” for some time – what is keeping it from falling flat? A year or so ago, we witnessed a similar sight along #48 east of Maryfield – it finally collapsed completely … interesting!

On our recent “runaways” we felt the “hunger pang”, so answered the call stopping at a roadside eatery. Scanning the menu, we spotted a Hawaiian burger – being the inquisitive one we sometimes are, we tried it – and yes, it is now a favourite and highly recommended!

And at home – be sure to take time to walk/ride (bike) the Haldenby Memory Lane joining Centennial and Lions Parks. The hanging flower baskets are out adding to the beauty. If doing this in the evening – or anytime – plan to include KoRner Kones for a “cool one” to complete your time of relaxation – make it a MUST!

As we go to press, the cotoneaster hedge at the corner of Lonsdale Street & Pipestone Avenue is disappearing. This area has been a spot of contention for some locals for some time. Have a great Canada Day All … …

The boss asked the worker, “What time did you get back from lunch?” The employee said, “About a quarter of twelve.” The boss said, ”I saw you coming in at 3 o’clock.” “Well,” responded the worker, “Three is a quarter of twelve, isn’t it?”

RTR HAPPENINGS

The “ovens were turned on” once again on the 20th when RTR members and volunteers met at the United Church to add to their pie inventory – about 85 were built – seems to be a varied amount (mystery?).

46 of these found their way to the Gall farm sale on the 22nd – only 14 returned! At least a dozen were sold whole – one local volume-buyer purchasing 3!

The 4-H Achievement Day on July 1st will be the next venue – followed by July 21st and August 25th at the Red Market Barn (we estimate at least one or two bake-offs will have to happen before then).

And yes – pies are available at all times – give us a call – and we do deliver in Town – and beyond for a price!

You asked ?? Question: Why was the Lion’s Annual Golf Tournament cancelled? Answer: When we heard this news, we contacted a few active Lions’ members to hear their views. It seems that a declining lack of sponsorship was one main reason for the decision. Also, each year seemed to have a decline in golfers. Some seemed to think it may have a “rebirth” – hopefully -- however in past experiences, once an event of this caliber is cancelled for whatever reason, it’s never easy – if at all – to re-establish. It is unfortunate that this year’s edition would be cancelled – it would have been the 25th anniversary. In years gone by, profits of $8 – 10 thousand was not unusual with up to a max number of over 100 golfers – memories – life goes on!

MAKE VISITING THE WAWOTA & DISTRICT MUSEUM PART OF YOUR 2019 PLANS

What is a Museum? ➢ A museum is a place you went to with your school class.

Upon entering the museum, the rooms were dark and crowded. You saw some pictures, an old- fashioned iron, a stuffed owl, a spinning wheel and maybe a mannequin dressed in odd clothes.

➢ A museum is a place you visited with your Grandma or your Dad. “What the heck is that?” you’d ask. Dad would say he was not sure. But Grandma would say “that is how we used to separate the cream after milking our cows. And that thing in the corner is how we used to churn butter.” She might then tell you stories from her childhood.

➢ If you are from an older generation, a museum brought back memories from your childhood. Do you remember reading with a coal oil lantern? Did you heat your sadiron on the old coal & wood stove? Did you hop into the buggy for your weekly trip into town? Did you fashion a new tool from scraps of iron found around your farm?

How did the Wawota Museum get started? ➢ In 1980, the Town of Wawota celebrated its 75th Birthday & a local project of this celebration was the Museum. With funds

raised in the celebration, a building was purchased & it had a wonderful history – built in the early 1900s – a real estate office, then a village/municipal office, then a Credit Union – and lastly a Museum. Behind this building is Wawota’s first firehall built in 1909 by Silas Rogers and Andy Scott, with the original fire bell still hanging in the tower. And the museum continued to expand - the main building was remodeled, the old firehall repaired, the old drugstore next door was purchased, torn down and rebuilt to make a four-room display depicting the interior of an 1900 house, a shed was added for more displays, and the Bethany Schoolhouse was moved onto the property

➢ When you come in, we can show you… the old four-room house, a sample of the Old Royal Theatre, a Wildlife Diorama, a Drugstore/Doctor Display, Military Display, Tool Displays, Agriculture Displays, School Displays, Sports Displays, Hall of Fame, and much more … …

➢ The Wawota Museum exhibits our collection in themed display areas – in the main museum building, the 2nd floor of the main building, the 4-room house, the school, the shed & the old firehall. Your Museum has four buildings with displays on the property – not just the big white building you see when you walk down Main Street.

How is the Museum funded? ➢ a Spring Tea & Bake Sale, a Christmas Tea & Sale, Raffles and other fund-raising events, High Teas (every Fri. in

July/Aug), Grants (Sask Culture, MAS, Sask Lotteries, Recreation Bd.), Donations (Town, RM #92 & RM #93, Lions, Legion, Mountney Club, other local clubs, local businesses, individuals) – also the Voluntary Donation Box for museum visitors.

The Wawota Museum is where we attempt to educate… on your past, your present and maybe even a look into the future.
