Larry Hamby – LVTC’s Karate Instructor Extraordinaire

Larry’s is a true Karate Kid story – he started taking Karate lessons when he was 14 after he had been beaten up by a group of kids in a park. His father gave him 2 months of Karate lessons as a Christmas gift because of the incident. Little did either of them anticipate the long-term effect of those early lessons. Larry went on to join the military where because of his Karate background he was placed in the Strategic Air Command, and was given intensive training in close range self-defense. In Southeast Asia he was an instructor for the Military police, taking Shotokan Karate classes on his own at night. When he came home to Illinois, he opened his first Karate school there. Larry came to Livermore 28 years ago and has been teaching Karate at LVTC for 18 years. During this time, he has successfully trained many of our members and children. In the late 1980s he had a local tv show called Hamby’s Karate. Larry and his students have received many trophies over the years. In addition to heading up our Karate program, Larry owns and runs a Security Training business (Security Six) in San Leandro where he shares his other Self-Defense skills. “Lightning Larry,” as he is called, is a weapons expert, and a sharp-shooting champion. In November 2006 Larry appeared on the Discovery Channel

Mythbusters show to test the myth that western legend Kid Curry could get 5 shots off from a single action revolver before a silver dollar he dropped from shoulder height could hit the ground. While Larry was able to do this with a modern gun, it was proven that the guns of the Wild West could not achieve the feat. Additionally, Larry demonstrated the art of the “fast draw” and was able to draw his weapon from the holster, cock it and hit a target 7 yards away in a record time of 172 milliseconds. He attributes some of his success in sharpshooting to the quick reflexes he developed from practicing Karate.

Ever thought about taking a self-defense class, or giving your child

a little more confidence and discipline by enrolling him or her in a martial arts class? LVTC’s exceptional Karate program is headed up by self-defense expert and long-time Karate instructor, Larry Hamby. Larry is the highest ranking Shotokan Karate instructor in California with the rank of 9th degree Black Belt. He is also a sixth-degree Black belt in Hakko-Ryu Jujitsu. The Karate program here at the Club is available to ages 7 and up. Classes are offered two nights a week – Sundays and Tuesdays. The beginner classes concentrate on the katas – pre-arranged movements against imaginary opponents. The students learn to punch, block and kick. The older students move up to the Jujitsu self-defense techniques. The higher ranked students are taught to use traditional karate weapons. Larry’s program blends the Shotokan and Jujitsu techniques. The word Karate (kara te) means “empty hands” and emphasizes punch, block and kick forms, while Jujitsu focuses on hands-on techniques such as locks and grappling. Larry warns new students that karate is a contact sport and can result in bumps and bruises, but very few real injuries occur because of the control exercised by teachers and students. You can try out a class for free – call the Club or e-mail Ann DeKay at [email protected]. Or, you can e-mail Larry at [email protected].

Each year, LVTC trains and provides a team of

ball kids for the SAP Open ATP Professional Tennis Tournament. This year we had a strong group of kids who represented themselves well and did the Club proud. We worked the Thursday afternoon matches with the highlight being on court for the James Blake match. We also worked with Mardy Fish, Tommy Haas, Sam Query and John Eisner.

F ive years ago a small group of tennis friends from the Livermore Valley Tennis Club attended the First Ladies Luncheon sponsored then by the Sybase corporation.

Over the years our group has grown and now includes non-tennis playing ladies. This year a total of 18 of us attended the Men’s SAP Open Tennis Tournament in San Jose on February 12th. At 8:30 am we all met at the Club, carpooled to the San Jose HP Pavilion and watched the Men’s Pro Tennis Matches from 9:30-11:30.

Then the FUN began - we all attended the Ladies Luncheon 11:30 am - 1:30 pm.The 4-course meal was delicious, with wine pairings for each course. Tennis Pro Marcos Baghdatis even stopped by and spoke about his personal goals and the physical and mental challenges of the game of tennis.

Then back to watching the Tennis matches from 1:30 - 6:00 pm.We were also fortunate enough to watch our own Livermore Valley Tennis Club Ball Boys and Girls work the matches in the afternoon Session! What a thrill it was to see them all in action - they were so organized, and professionally handled all their duties. Great Job Kids!

Wow, what a Great day we all had... Couldn’t ask for more-watching Pro Tennis, having Lunch with girlfriends, seeing LVTC’s Ball Kids and just spending time together!

We all can’t wait for next year!

Geraldine Romero-Mavis is currently one of the top ranked female tennis players here at the Club. She is a former collegiate tennis player and continues to compete in leagues and tennis tournaments throughout the year. Unfortunately towards the end of last year, a shoulder injury forced Geraldine to hang up the rackets and be a sidelined cheerleader for her teammates and fellow club players. Determined to get in better shape, Geraldine has been working with personal trainer Akshay Arora since the middle of December. According to Akshay, Geraldine has a very positive attitude towards her exercise. She arrives early for their appointments, warms up and is ready to go with whatever he has planned for her. The tremendous amount of hard work Geraldine puts in during their workouts has allowed her to increase her strength levels, speed, and endurance. She lost a total of 15 lbs in the first two months and continues to get in better shape to prevent injuries in the future. If you see Geraldine around the Club, wish her good luck for her upcoming tennis season.

Livermore Aquacowboys News by Coach Alex Silver

Things are heating up in the pool at the Livermore Valley Tennis Club!

The Livermore Aquacowboys had a great February, with our Zone 2 championships, a trip to watch the Cal/Stanford men’s swimming dual meet, and a Valentine’s Holiday Party! We’re having a blast, and gaining valuable skills at the same time. We have received several new swimmers who are eager to get ready for Summer League and are getting a jump start on their training. If your child is excited about the Fireballs this summer, act now, there is still space in our Summer Shape-Up Program, and getting back into swimming shape early may make all the difference once June comes around. At the Zone 2 Championships, February 7th & 8th, the Livermore Aquacowboys won the small teams division! The meet was divided up into two categories depending on team size, and of all the teams in the smaller size bracket, the Aquacowboys scored the most points! It was an awesome team effort with 17 members contributing to our 1st place finish. Allie Clark, Alex Gonzalez, and Katie Kulp were all named to the Zone 2 All-Star team. Shahini Ananth and Trent Trump were named as alternates. These swimmers were chosen to represent Zone

2 in the Pacific Swimming All Star meet March 1st. Nina Hayes was 2nd in the high point contest for 13-14 girls, and made her first Sectionals Cut! We had a warm Valentine’s Day Party thanks to Gayle Brennan and some of our dedicated parents. Gayle and her friends set up a great party for us to have after practice on the 13th, where we had a chance to spend time appreciating each other in swimmer-type ways, like...arm wrestling and eating huge amounts of cookies! It was great to be able to laugh and play in honor of the friendships that are being created on our team. On February 21st, our team took a field trip to see some of the fastest swimming in the world when the Cal men took on the Stanford men in a dual meet. We watched Gold Medalist Nathan Adrian swim as well as several members of the US National Team. This field trip was both educational and inspirational. Hopefully sometime soon, some of our own swimmers will be representing high level Universities and the Untied States in this sport. We look forward to an awesome Spring and summer with the potential for a great Fireballs Season!

Pilates Pointer of the Month

T rying to stretch those hamstrings? Let’s make sure that you aren’t

just over-stretching your low back. The key to flexibility is keeping you trunk in its natural shape as you move your arms and legs through full range. Try stretching your hamstrings while lying down. First bend the opposite knee to protect your back and put your hands behind the thigh of the leg you are stretching. The most important thing is to make sure your low back has a natural curve and is not pressed into the floor. Then, gently straighten your knee only as much as you can without losing that small curve in your low back. This is the true length of your hamstrings. There should, at no time, be any discomfort in your low back. Once you have mastered this, you could try standing and holding onto something while swinging your leg forward making sure that your spine stays in that same natural curve. Next month: Is it better to do held stretches or moving stretches?
