********************************************************************************************** Divine Mercy Sunday ~ Divine Mercy Sunday will be celebrated here at St. Anthony's on Sunday, April 8th from 3:00 to 4;00 p.m. The Novena to The Divine Mercy ~ In the Diary of St. Faustina, we can read some of the following excerpts of what Jesus told St. Faustina about the Novena. "The Lord told me to say this Chaplet for nine days before the Feast of Mercy. It is to begin on Good Friday." "By this novena, I will grant every possible grace to souls" (Entry 796). Jesus is commanding me to make a

Novena before the Feast of Mercy, and today I am to begin it for the conversion of the whole world and for the

recognition of The Divine Mercy...so that every soul will praise My goodness. I desire trust from My creatures. Encourage souls to place great trust in My fathomless mercy. Let the weak, sinful soul have no fear to approaching Me, for even if it had more sins than there are grains of sand in the world, all would be drowned in the immeasurable depths of My mercy." (Entry 1059). (The bold words are the words of our Lord to St. Faustina.) Our Lord gave St. Faustina an intention to pray for on each day of the Novena. It is greatly recommended that the Novena intentions and prayers be said together with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. The Novena starts on Good Friday, March 30th and ends April 7th, the day before Divine Mercy Sunday. Flyers on how to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and copies of the Novena can be found at each entrance of the church. VICTORY OVER SIN, SATAN, DEATH: Easter is a victory that Jesus won for the entire human race. Sin is something that enslaves us. How do we escape it? We want to be fully human, fully alive. When Jesus rises, He shows us that no sin can hold Him – or us – down. He even shares His power to forgive with His disciples. Satan thought he had the human race cornered. He thought he was on his way to destroying God’s plan to share His divine happiness with mere creatures. When God’s Son destroyed death, Satan’s plan was destroyed too. We fear death, be it our own death, or that of someone we love. More than we would like to admit, we are like Woody Allen, who said, “I know that I am going to die. I just don’t want to be there when it happens.” The Resurrection shows us that Jesus will be there when it happens, and we can hand all our fears over to Him. The death of the people we love seems to me to be actually harder to handle. We who are left behind feel lost and empty. We feel guilty at having survived. We ask “why?” Easter provides us with no answer, but it assures us that a loving God is in charge, and that neither death, nor sin, nor Satan has the final say about what anyone’s life has meant. IS “EASTER” A PAGAN WORD? Some churches charge other churches (especially Catholics) with celebrating a spring feast named after a pagan goddess. According to my Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “Easter” comes from an Old English word for “east.” Do we call it that because Jesus rose “early in the morning, just as the sun was rising?” In German, the name for today’s feast is similar. But in Latin and just about every other language, the name for today’s feast is “Pascha” or some variation of that word. “Pascha” means “Passover.” So most of the world’s languages connect today’s mystery with the Old Testament mystery that Jesus fulfilled. Don’t blame the Catholics because English and German don’t follow the lead of most other languages. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY: The Easter season continues for fifty days, as the Church contemplates the full meaning of Jesus’ victory. Next Sunday we will read how Jesus gave His apostles the power to forgive people’s sins. Because we traditionally read this Gospel on the Sunday after Easter, Saint John Paul II gave it the additional name “Divine Mercy Sunday.” We will celebrate this day at 3 pm next Sunday with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Easter Vespers, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and Benediction. ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL: The message of Jesus’ victory over death, and His divine mercy needs to be spread. Through the Annual Catholic Appeal you can support Catholic schools, help with the education of future priests, and help the poor of our area build a better life for themselves. Envelopes were mailed to you. If yours was lost, you can pick up a replacement at any of our entrances. NEW ASSIGNMENT: Starting July 2, I will be the part-time pastor of Sts. Adalbert and Hedwig Parish in the Old North End of Toledo. It’s about a mile from the former St. Vincent de Paul Parish, where I served from 1985 to 1996. That is an advantage, because many of my friends are now in this parish. I may have to brush up on my Polish. I know lots of individual words, but they’re not always the useful ones. For example, I only know the names of three sins, so Confessions will almost have to be in English. And a Polish homily would be the impossible dream, because the grammar is much more complex than English. It will be nice to greet old friends again, but it will be pretty sad to leave all my St. Anthony friends behind. As the song says, the days dwindle down to a precious few.
