Check out what's happening in Saskatoon Willowgrove and throughout the Province! HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! Halloween is an exciting day for children. Please drive with extreme caution and watch for the excited children that will be going from house to house getting treats. I encourage everyone to follow the tips below to ensure our children enjoy a safe Halloween. Plan a route, if you have little ones this can be the best way to navigate a safe path. Costumes should be bright, though some of our scary ones will be in dark costumes to cause the most fright, a little reflective tape or a bright scarf will make them better to see. If the best costume ever needs a mask, make sure that the eye and mouth holes are big enough for them to see and breath out of. The older kids, who can go on their own without an adult, should have a flashlight, stay in a group and have an agreed upon time to return home to check the treats. HAPPY HALLOWE'EN!

Halloween is an exciting day for children. Please drive with extreme caution and watch for the

excited children that will be going from house to house getting treats. I encourage everyone to

follow the tips below to ensure our children enjoy a safe Halloween.

Plan a route, if you have little ones this can be the best way to navigate a safe path.

Costumes should be bright, though some of our scary ones will be in dark costumes to

cause the most fright, a little reflective tape or a bright scarf will make them better to

see. If the best costume ever needs a mask, make sure that the eye and mouth holes

are big enough for them to see and breath out of.

The older kids, who can go on their own without an adult, should have a flashlight, stay

in a group and have an agreed upon time to return home to check the treats.

I hope that everyone has a safe and fun time this Halloween! Remember to check our coming

events for some fun events taking place in our constituency to celebrate Halloween.

SASKATCHEWAN REGIONAL PARKS ASSOCIATION FALL MEETING

Page 4: HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! - Ken Cheveldayoff · 2016-10-26 · HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! Halloween is an exciting day for children. Please drive with extreme caution and watch for the excited children

Regional Parks provide high quality recreation and economic development opportunities to many

towns and cities throughout our province. I was pleased to join Regional Park staff and the many

volunteers who manage, maintain and grow our Regional Park System at their annual fall meeting

last Friday.

On behalf of Premier Brad Wall and the Government of Saskatchewan, it was a pleasure to thank the

group and express our appreciation for all they do to make our Regional Park system strong. The

parks are places of pride within Saskatchewan and are well used and appreciated.

As Minister for Parks, Culture and Sport, I was grateful to meet the many people that make it

possible for families to come together to make memories at our beautiful parks.

ACCESS TO MRI'S IMPROVED FOR SASKATCHEWAN PEOPLE

Page 5: HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! - Ken Cheveldayoff · 2016-10-26 · HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! Halloween is an exciting day for children. Please drive with extreme caution and watch for the excited children

Since private-pay magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) services began in February 2016, more than

1,800 patients are benefiting from a private MRI scan, at no cost to the public health system. This

volume equals an additional MRI machine operating five hours per day, seven days per week, at a

total cost that would have exceeded $835,000 if the scans had been billed to the public system.

“As demand for MRI services continues to increase, our government has provided choice and

added capacity for patients seeking a timely MRI in our province,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said.

pay services and medical imaging wait times.

2016 SASKATCHEWAN ARTS AWARDS

Page 6: HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! - Ken Cheveldayoff · 2016-10-26 · HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! Halloween is an exciting day for children. Please drive with extreme caution and watch for the excited children

I was pleased to join Saskatoon Willowgrove constituent Pamella Acton, President of the

Saskatchewan Arts Board, nominees, artists, families and supporters of the arts last week at the

annual Saskatchewan Arts Awards.

On behalf of Premier Brad Wall and the Government of Saskatchewan, I was delighted to attend the

festivities to celebrate excellence, accomplishment and dedication of the nominees and award

winners. All are recognized by their peers from the arts and culture community and were well-

deserving of being honoured.

One of the ways our government invests in arts and culture is through the Saskatchewan Arts

Board. As Minister of Parks, Culture and Sport, I appreciate the display of excellence

demonstrated in the fields of visual arts, music, dance, theatre and arts education as well as

leadership. Through these awards, we recognize the arts community and their many

accomplishments, as well as the impact the arts has on our quality of life in Saskatchewan.

Page 7: HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! - Ken Cheveldayoff · 2016-10-26 · HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! Halloween is an exciting day for children. Please drive with extreme caution and watch for the excited children

Congratulations to the Saskatchewan Arts Board for this gala evening and for more than 68 years of

service to Saskatchewan artists and the entire province. It was a fantastic evening to celebrate the

amazing display of talent!

C95 RADIO MARATHON FOR BREAST CANCER

Trish was pleased to join Rob Suski and Shauna Foster on the air last week and share her story on

the C95 Radio Marathon for Breast Cancer. The radio marathon for Breast Cancer research has

become one of the largest, most successful fundraisers benefiting the Saskatchewan Cancer

Agency.

The C95 Radio Marathon for Breast Cancer Research began in October of 2000 when C95's Morning

Show host, Lisa Rendall, was diagnosed with breast cancer. For over fifteen years, the C95 team

has worked tirelessly to raise awareness within our community and funds for the Saskatchewan

Cancer Agency Research Department.

Every year, over 700 Saskatchewan women are diagnosed with breast cancer. It's one of the most

common forms of cancer, and very treatable if detected early. Understanding how breast cancer

develops and why it spreads is a key focus of the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency's research team at

the Saskatoon Cancer Centre.

A GREAT TOUR OF THE SASKATOON CATHOLIC CYBER SCHOOL

I had the opportunity to get a first hand look at the Saskatoon Catholic Cyber School. This school

was the first online school in Saskatchewan. They began in 1999 and have grown to be one of the

largest Cyber Schools in the province. Thank you to principal Ryan Hauber for the tour. Ryan saw

online education as the answer to so many educational questions and wanted to do something to

help students move ahead in their academic program. This school provides an invaluable resource

for people across the entire spectrum of learners who need the flexibility of online courses. To

FREE FLU SHOTS AVAILABLE IN SASKACHEWAN BEGINNING OCTOBER 31

Page 10: HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! - Ken Cheveldayoff · 2016-10-26 · HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! Halloween is an exciting day for children. Please drive with extreme caution and watch for the excited children

The publicly-funded (free) flu vaccine will be offered in Saskatchewan beginning October 31 and is

recommended to all residents six months of age and older. The free flu vaccine will be available

through public health clinics across the province, at some physician and Nurse Practitioner offices,

and from participating pharmacies.

“Influenza, commonly known as the flu, can cause serious illness and result in complications,

hospitalization and even death,” Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab

said. “Getting a flu shot is especially important for people who are most at risk of serious illness

from influenza - seniors, young children, pregnant women and people with chronic health

conditions - and their caregivers.”

Only injectable vaccine will be offered in Saskatchewan through the publicly-funded influenza

immunization program for 2016-17. The injectable vaccine provides protection against four different

flu virus strains that are most likely to circulate in 2016-17

Congratulations to Saskatoon's Lorne Figley who was recognized by Guiness World Records for

being the world's oldest plumber! What a remarkable accomplishment. Mr. Figley started his

business, Broadway Heating Ltd. with four friends after returning home from World War II in 1947. In

honour of Figley's accomplishment, Saskatchewan Polytechnic created a $500 apprenticeship

student award in his name for the person who receives the highest marks on his or her

journeyperson exam.

MORE HOMEGROWN AND INTERNATIONALLY TRAINED DOCTORS PRACTISING IN SASKATCHEWAN

Dozens of physicians recently began practising in Saskatchewan, improving access to physician

services for Saskatchewan residents.

Saskatchewan is making progress in keeping more locally-trained family medicine graduates in the

province. Since completing a post-graduate program, 40 new University of Saskatchewan (U of S)

family medicine graduates are practising in the province. Overall, the retention rate of local family

medicine graduates has jumped by 17 per cent over the past three years – from 58 per cent to 75 per

cent.

“I’m very pleased that these local medical graduates have decided to practise in Saskatchewan,”

Rural and Remote Health Minister Greg Ottenbreit said. “Internationally trained physicians also play

Page 12: HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! - Ken Cheveldayoff · 2016-10-26 · HAPPY HALLOWE'EN! Halloween is an exciting day for children. Please drive with extreme caution and watch for the excited children

a vital role in our health system, and we welcome them to our province. Thanks to the increased

investments by our government in both home-grown and internationally trained doctors, we now

have nearly 650 more physicians practising today than we did nine years ago.”

SASKATCHEWAN LEGISLATURE TO HOLD SPECIAL DEBATE ON PROPOSED FEDERAL CARBON TAX

The Saskatchewan government intends to introduce and debate a motion today to oppose the

national carbon tax proposed by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and to support the provincial

government’s climate change plan outlined last week by Premier Brad Wall.

Wall said he hopes the motion gets the unanimous support of the Legislature, which will send a

strong message to Ottawa about Saskatchewan’s opposition to the national carbon tax.

“The federal carbon tax will hit Saskatchewan’s economy and Saskatchewan workers particularly

hard, given the importance of the resource, mining and agriculture sectors in this province,” Wall

said. “Now is not the time for Ottawa to force a job-killing carbon tax on our province. I hope

members on both sides of the House can stand together and send a clear message to Ottawa – ‘no’

to a national carbon tax.”

VIOLENCE PREVENTION WEEK IN SASKATCHEWAN Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant is pleased to announce October 24-28, 2016,

as the third annual Violence Prevention Week in Saskatchewan.

“With the tragic levels of violence we continue to see in our province, this is an issue our

government takes very seriously,” Wyant said. “Violence in our communities is completely

unacceptable and we all must play a role in stopping it. I thank the University of Regina for once

again asking that this important week be proclaimed.”
