Principal’s WelcomeWhy choose Haringey Sixth Form Centre?Choosing the right Sixth Form for your Post 16Education is one of the most important decisionsthat you will have to make as a young person. The fact that you are considering Haringey SixthForm Centre is brilliant! Our A-level results wereonce again excellent with a 97% pass rate; 16 out of22 subjects achieved 100%, a further 3 subjectsachieved 95% or above, and 54% of grades wereA*– C. Our Vocational BTEC courses also securedexcellent results with a 98% pass rate for BTECNational Extended Diploma courses; 8 out of 10subjects achieving100%. You can read more about these successes on pages 4, 5, 6 and 7.

A career-focused educationOur success did not end there, with 89% ofstudents who applied to university getting places to start this Autumn. A total of 976 students haveprogressed to university since our first cohort in2008 and the number of students progressing to Russell Group Universities continues to rise.

Step 5Enrolment

Enrolment begins in the last week of August which you will be

invited to attend. If you do not receive the grades required for the course you have been offered a place on,

stay calm, we will discuss other options and help

you find a suitable alternative.

Step 3Interview

You will be sent an acknowledgement letter once we

have received your application form. Interviews will begin in January 2014

and a letter will be sent to you inviting you for an interview

and assessment.

We work alongside businesses to createopportunities for Haringey Sixth Form Centrestudents to broaden their experiences and helpprepare them for being an adult and their working life.

The range of partnerships and activities continues to expand each year. Here are somerecent examples of opportunities our studentshave experienced:

• Five Humanities and Social Science studentsundertake a one-week internship withinternational law firm Allen & Overy. • A-level students work with the Royal Bankof Scotland legal team during their internships.

• Level 3 Science students experiencedpractical work experience at North MiddlesexUniversity Hospital, Whittington Hospital andthe London Metropolitan University,Biochemistry Department.

• Work experience opportunities for ourYear 2 BTEC Level 3 Sports students take themto local leisure centres and gyms.

• Art and Design students host visits fromfashion designers Oswald Boateng andVivienne Westwood.

• BTEC Level 2 students collaborate across the Centre to work on the Sky Sport, InspireBoxing initiative.• Students perform at four local schools as partof a Theatre in Education tour.• Creative and Performing Arts & Mediastudents have been inspired by visits from a BBC broadcaster and music video director.

Enrichment activitiesEnrichment is part of all our courses and bringsyour learning to life. Enrichment activities give aninsight into what to expect from your subjects inreal life. We organise trips, clubs and activities thatlet you let you try new things, make friends and grow as a person.

Students have the opportunity to competeagainst other schools and colleges whenthey choose to join the football,basketball or netball teams.Other interesting activitiesstudents can get involved in include; student blog,psychology society,dance, debating society,eco club, book cluband a wide range ofvoluntary work.

Be an ambassadorBeing a student ambassador is a wonderful way to improve your confidence and increaseyour work experiences; useful when applying to universities and employers. Our team ofambassadors are well known for theirprofessionalism and give tours of the Centre,deliver presentations alongside the School Liaisonteam and meet and greet at Centre open events.Our ambassadors are paid as well.

Student ServicesOur Student Services team is available to provideyou with the support, advice and information youneed throughout the year. Services provided bythe Student Services team include:

Personal TutorWhen you start your course you will

be allocated a personal tutor, who is the person you share yourconcerns with. Your Tutor will help you in a variety of ways, including:• Settling in• Any personal or practicalconcerns

• Academic progress• Personal, social and life skills

• Career choices• Referring you to others for specialist help, if needed

Careers GuidanceIf you are undecided about the course or careerpath to follow, we have access to a wide range of resources. Our Careers Adviser will giveimpartial, confidential advice including help with applying to university, writing a CV andplanning your career.

Counselling ServicesWe have professionally trained student counsellorswho are able to offer confidential and non-judgemental advice, counselling and informationon a range of matters including personal problemsand relationships. We have both male and femalecounsellors who will help you deal with any difficultsituations that you may be going through.

Student WelfareOur Welfare Officer is available to advise andsupport students with welfare needs. This includesadvice on financial support, homelessness andhousing, benefits, sexual health, relationships,childcare and other issues.

Learning SupportAll students regardless of the type of course theyare taking or their level of ability, will have theirlearning support needs met. During the inductionprogramme we will assess if you require anyadditional learning support and then work withyou to develop an individual support plan thatmakes the most of your course. Our learningsupport team can provide:

• Help with English and Maths• Help with English if its not your first language• Dyslexia support• Special equipment• Signers and communicators for students withhearing difficulties• Help with study skills• Exam concessions• Help with portfolio preparation and assignments• Personal care and health needs• Help with access issues• In-class and out-of-class support• Specialist one to one tutor support

Functional SkillsHaringey Sixth Form Centre attaches considerable importance to our students acquiringthe skills that are essential for life, work and HigherEducation. Functional Skills in Maths and Englishwill be studied alongside your main programme,alternatively if appropriate, you may study GCSEEnglish or GCSE Maths.

Haringey Sixth Form Centre is a bridge betweenGCSE studies and the independence of life atuniversity and the working world. We work alongsideour students to develop the academic and socialskills they will need to achieve their full potential. The experience of being a sixth form student isdifferent from being a school pupil. Financial Matters & SupportAll full time programmes are free for studentsunder 19. We also provide textbooks to be usedduring your time at the Centre.

Some courses require students to purchasespecialist equipment and materials e.g. cateringuniform, art materials. These will be availablefrom the Centre at a subsidised rate.

All students are asked to pay a £35 depositat enrolment, £20 of which is refundableat the end of your course provided allCentre books and equipment arereturned in good order.

Educational BursariesBursaries are a financial incentive for 16-18 yearolds to study. If you qualify for a bursary, the amountyou get depends on your household income.Payments of bursaries are based on attendance atyour lessons each term including tutorials and keyskills lessons. If you miss any lessons you will notreceive any money for that term. The amountpayable will depend on the amount of money theCentre receives from the government. Students in certain nominated groups receive an annualbursary of £1,200. These groups are those lookedafter, those in personal receipt of income supportand disabled young people in receipt of EmploymentSupport Allowance and also Disability LivingAllowance. Refectory The Refectory offers a wide range of hot and cold meals and drinks at very reasonable prices. All the dishes are freshly prepared and cookeddaily including vegetarian and healthy options; all meat cooked is halal.

The Refectory is open between the hours of8.30am – 3.00pm.

TeamworkYou'll have the opportunity to represent the Centre in a wide variety of sports at local, regionaland national level. More than 100 students trainand compete on a weekly basis.

All Haringey Sixth Form Centre students have free access to the Fitness Suite which includes stateof the art equipment including Technogym cardio,machine weights and free weights.

Staff are knowledgeable and always willing to helpso that you get the most out of your workout or training programme. A girls only session runs on a weekly basis when girls can use the gym bythemselves and includes self-defence and box fit.

What are the Haringey Sixth FormCentre Sports Academies?The Sport Academy programme is a series ofcoaching, training and competition activitiesinterlinked with a study programme.

A Haringey Sixth Form Centre Sport Academystudent has the opportunity to experience andbenefit from top-level coaching from professionalsportswomen and sportsmen who work at thecentre of excellence in their specific sports.

To apply for a place as a Haringey Sixth FormCentre Sports Academy student you will need toattend a sports trial.

Netball AcademyStudents who play for the Netball Academy receive top quality coaching from national andinternational players on a weekly basis. Studentsreceive a uniform and will play competitivematches regularly. Strength and conditioningsessions in our state of the art Fitness Suite guidedby exercise professionals form a key part of astudents training programme. While improvingtheir netball skills students will study A-levels or a BTEC course to gain academic qualifications.

Futsal in partnership with TottenhamHotspur FoundationStudents selected for the Futsal Academy course receive up to 8 hours of Futsal coachingevery week from qualified Tottenham HotspurFoundation coaches while studying for a BTECLevel 1, 2 or 3 Diploma in Sport. Competitivematches are played every week against colleges,universities and Football League Clubs.

11-a-side Football Academy in partnershipwith The Footsteps TrustStudents who play for the Football Academyreceive up to 8 hours of coaching from anAcademy standard and UEFA qualified coach whilestudying a range of academic sport qualifications. Matches are played in affiliated league and cupcompetitions at the Fredrick Knight Sports Ground.Students receive top qualitytraining and match gear.

Basketball Academy in partnership with London Lions and Reach & TeachSports NetworkLondon Lions basketball player, and formerinternational point guard Perry Lawson will sharehis professional experience as he acts as HeadCoach. Players receive a minimum of 10 hours of coaching a week in additionto strength and conditioning andmental toughness training with a full schedule of league andtournament competitions.Students will also have theopportunity to study for and sitthe SATs (the standardised testin the USA). Successful studentswould then be able to apply forcollege admission in the United Statesto play basketball at college level.
