5 years OSU has been working on captioning.
Numerous people have involved in this project.
Fast turn around.
Currently, DAS has 3 student workers serving the university captioning needs.
History of problems: Instructor does not know how to turn on
closed captioning on the system.
Projector in the classroom does not have closed captioning decoder.
Equipment (DVD/VHS player) does not function.
Windows PC with at least 2GB RAM
Dual Processor at least (1.86 Ghz or larger)
TV Turner Card (to capture VHS)
Graphic Card and Sound Card
Obtain and convert media to “digital” media
Obtain the transcript
Format the transcript
Timing the transcript against the video
Convert the digital media to Flash video
Media VHS DVD Online Clip
How Use capturing software
(usually comes when purchasing
PC’s TV Turner)
Use DVD Decrypter
Use FireFox extension
(Video DownloadHelper)

If you do not have transcriber, use Dragon Naturally Speaking (preferred version).
Not recommended! Only for the last resort and short video!
Accuracy 50-70% depending on speaker’s clarity, number of speakers, etc.
How to: Split the video into chunks of audio files
(max. 5 minutes).Hint: use GoldWave
Save in WAV format Open Dragon Naturally Speaking Select Appropriate Profile (not really
important) Use Dragon to transcribe the audio

Most common transcriber errors: Transposed text (where text is placed in the
wrong order) Wrong words used Missing words (text isn’t verbatim, especially
critical in doing outside and archival work) Misspellings (do not rely on Word’s
dictionary) Missing auditory cues (all cues relevant to
the text should be included) Frequent problems with contractions,
hyphenations, compound words, homonyms Verbs are in the wrong tense
Send the digital media to the transcriber.

Use Gamepad. Logitech software are used to interface with Subtitle Workshop so that you can use a joystick game pad for timing and moving through your project efficiently.
