Crider said the gener-al store tries not to com-pete against local busi-nesses and primarilysells Black Mountain andHarlan County sou-venirs, with less than 10percent of sales comingfrom snack foods andgeneral goods.

Dallas Gilbert, co-chairman of the board, said by the end of the2009-2010 fiscal year thepark had created threefull-time jobs in thepark’s maintenancedepartment, and hadsigned a contract withthe Harlan CountySheriff’s office to supplya full-time deputy posi-tion to the trail system.

“It takes a lot of workto keep our trails main-tained — a lot of peopledon’t think about that,”said Gilbert. “It keepsour three maintenancepersonnel busy checkingthe trails on a regularbasis and keeping thepark clean. During the2009-2010 fiscal year, several miles of newtrails were opened, which helps keep theexperience of the parknew and fresh for fre-quent visitors to the trailsystem.”

Gilbert said an inven-tory of tools and equip-ment had been pur-chased during the pastyear, which includedsmall tools such as chain-

saws, weedeaters andtorches, at a cost ofapproximately $4,000.He said their inventorynow also included a bull-dozer, backhoe and off-road vehicles.

“The sheriff’s officefronted the cost of neces-sary equipment for thecontract deputy we haveat the park now, whichincluded a 2010 PolarisRanger,” said Gilbert.“Extra deputies are pro-vided at the park duringspecial events.”

Crider said in 2010the first hiking trail,“Cinco Falls Trail” wasdeveloped to take off-roaders to several natu-ral waterfalls on theproperty, without intro-ducing motorized vehi-cles to sensitive areas.

“Two new camp-grounds were openedthis past year, Creeksideand SycamoreCampgrounds,” saidCrider. “We also receiveda new maintenancebuilding, which wasdonated by ManalapanLand Company. Thebuilding was removedand reconstructed on-sitefor a cost of approximate-ly $12,000.”

Crider said all signageat the park was replacedthis past year, includingthe main entrance sig-nage at the EvartsTrailhead, directionalsignage and trail mark-ers.

“Five ‘you-are-herekiosks’ have been con-structed and placed at

several large intersec-tions and popular stopsthroughout the trail sys-tem,” said Crider. “We’reawaiting the completionof our newly designedtrail maps. The boardremapped all trails in2010, adding newly con-structed trails and previ-ously un-marked pointsof interest, removingclosed trails and makingseveral changes to makethe maps easier to under-stand. Many trail num-bers and classificationshave also been adjusted.”

Crider said work isunder way for camp-grounds, restroom facili-ties, parking areas andcommon areas for visi-tors at Evarts Trailheadon previously undevel-oped areas of the proper-ty. He said these accom-modations will improvethe user experience atthe park, as well as pro-vide revenue for futureexpansion.

Gilbert said anothernew addition to the parkwas a wild horse. He saidthe horse just appearedone day on one of thetrails, and since thattime, had become atourist attraction.

“He’s probably hadmore pictures taken ofhim than Secretariat,”said Gilbert. “He’sknown internationallynow. When the Germanscame to visit recently, they had a veterinarianwith them, who checkedthe horse out, and saidhe was sound.”

Gilbert said the horsehas developed “an agen-da” and would actuallystand in a roadway, hop-ing to get a treat. He saidthey hadn’t named thehorse yet but were justcalling him “that brownhorse” for the time being.

“He’s a bum. He runsa toll station out onHawkeye Overlook,” saidGilbert. “He’s got a nar-row place in the road-way, and when you cometo him, he’ll step out infront of you. You have togive him at least a life-saver or apple, and he’lljust go on his way.Everybody knows himnow, and they just bringstuff to him. It’s anadded adventure to thepark.”

Collier said in 2010the board was instru-mental in creating horsetrails in two differentareas of the county, expanded their existingoff-road trail system, andthey continued to attractthousands of visitors intothe Harlan County com-munities. She said theboard would continue towork on cleaning uprivers, so they could alsoattract visitors for pad-dle sports.

“It’s my privilege toreport a successful yearfor our organization andour county,” said Collier.“If you haven’t been onthe park, or involvedwith some of our activi-ties, we invite you to giveit a try.”

Fee said in calculatingthe city’s total revenuefor the year, the revenuedropped by $200. Hesaid, in short, the taxbills should be approxi-mately the same as lastyear.

“The tax rate for eachyear is determined byusing a spread sheet pro-vided by the Departmentfor Local Government,”said city clerk KristiLamb.

Fee said there are twobasic categories of prop-erty, real and personal. He said real property, in

general, includes and andanything permanentlyaffixed to land such aswells or buildings. Hesaid structures such ashomes, apartments, offices and commercialbuildings, and land towhich they are attached, are typical examples ofreal property.

“Basically, personalproperty is any propertywhich is not real proper-ty,” said Fee. “Personalproperty is not perma-nently attached to land.In most cases, it is move-able and doesn’t last aslong as real property.Personal propertyincludes vehicles, farmequipment, jewelry, household goods, stocksand bonds.”

Councilman ErnieWoodard said he wasglad to see the tax ratewas not going to beraised for residents thisyear.

There may be no moredeadly force in politicsthan hubris. It sneaks upon politicians at theirweakest moments — theheight of their success —and destroys them, some-times slowly, sometimesspectacularly.

President BarackObama is suffering from acase of hubris so far-reaching and debilitating,it will fascinate politicalepidemiologists fordecades. His intellectualboosters egged him on.They greeted his electionas the advent of, as PeterBeinart put it in Timemagazine, "The NewLiberal Order." SamTanenhaus of The NewYork Times rushed toprint a book called "TheDeath of Conservatism."

It was all settled, then— except of course it was-n't. "Public opinion is thelord of the universe,"Thomas Jefferson said. The Obama Democratsgoverned in blatant defi-ance of it, and didn't careto notice the trends thatshould have been a flash-ing red light on theirambitions.

Just as Obama wastaking office, public opin-ion was shifting to theright. In July of 2009,Gallup found that by a 2-1margin people said they'dbecome more conservativein recent years. Gallup

noted that "the results areconspicuously incongru-ous with the results of the2008 elections." It is thisdisparity that created theconditions for the tea-party movement, andeventually Obama's "shel-lacking."

"The party of no" wasrewarded in "the electionof no." The voters went tothe polls in the spirit ofthe Woody Allen remark,"I wish I had some kind ofaffirmative message toleave you with. Would youtake two negative mes-sages?" In 2010, theywere "no" and "stop."

Those words mustalways be spoken in a fre-quency too high forDemocrats to hear. In hispost-defeat press confer-ence, Obama said peopleare frustrated by the paceof the economic recovery.True enough. But SeanTrende ofRealClearPolitics notesthat the unemploymentrate in many electoralmodels would have onlyaccounted for aDemocratic loss of 20-30seats. In 1982, when the

unemployment rate washigher than today, RonaldReagan lost 26 Houseseats.

That means Democrats"overperformed" in theirmidterm debacle by 20-40seats. Not to mention thedown-ballot wipeout thatsaw Republicans pick up680 seats in state legisla-tures, 200 more than intheir historic victory in1994.

According to exit polls, only 23 percent of votersblamed Obama for thestate of the economy, fewer than blamed WallStreet bankers (35 per-cent) or George W. Bush(29 percent). But 74 per-cent are angry or dissatis-fied with the federal gov-ernment. Seventy-threepercent disapprove of theway Congress is handlingits job. Fifty-two percentthink Obama's policieswill hurt the country, and56 percent want the feder-al government to do less.

Was the electorateskewed by tea-party-fueled turnout? WilliamGalston of The NewRepublic points out thatthe electorate was 38 per-cent Democratic, 36 per-cent Republican and 28percent independent inthe Democratic wave of2006. This year that par-tisan breakdown wasalmost exactly the same. The difference is that

independents brokestrongly for Republicans, reflecting how they — inkeeping with the overallelectorate — have becomemore conservative inrecent years.

Whereas Obamathought he had a licenseto rush to transformAmerica after 2008, hereally had a tentativeendorsement from arefractory public, much ofwhich is inherently skep-tical of his goals. He waslike an ice fishermantromping around on whathe thought was a lakefrozen six inches thickwhen it was barely frozenat all.

Adjusting to the dis-comfiting reality of a cen-ter-right electorate is hischallenge now. It willrequire the humility first,to realize how fundamen-tally he misread theAmerican people, andthen, to adopt a more cau-tious and defensive styleof politics. If you are givento congratulating yourselfon your world-historicalimportance — and con-trasting yourself with BillClinton, the lastDemocratic president whoshrewdly survived amidterm drubbing —none of this will come eas-ily.

But it's the only curefor the shellacking thathubris wrought.

Shining a light on waysyou can curb obesity

Kentuckians weigh too much forour own good, and we know it. Themost recent Kentucky HealthIssues Poll shows that nine in 10Kentuckians see childhood obesityas a problem for our state.

Being overweight and obese hasgone beyond personal challengesthat raise our risk for diabetes andheart disease, and has evolved intoa pervasive dilemma that negative-ly impacts our communities. It’sharder to find young men andwomen who can meet the fitnessstandards for local fire and policedepartments, and even for ournational armed forces. We’re re-designing everything from schooldesks to airline cabins to coffins toaccommodate our added girth.Worker fitness — or lack of it — isimpacting our quality of life, ourcompanies’ bottom lines and ournation’s economic health.

That’s why businesses and gov-ernments across Kentucky are find-ing innovative ways to “make thehealthy choice the easy choice” —whether it’s re-striping a countryroad to provide clear paths forwalkers and bikers; joint use agree-ments to turn school yards into safefamily play space after hours; orbringing fresh produce to urbanand rural “food deserts” throughincentives for grocery stores andlocal ordinances that are farmer’smarket friendly — the list goes on.

The Fleming County Board ofHealth has committed to curbingobesity and diabetes through poli-cies that encourage greater physi-cal activity. What began with awalking trail effort grew to includeacquisition of land for developmentof the Fleming County Activitiesand Education Center. The centerserves several thousand residentsof all ages with exercise and activi-

ty classes, cardio and resistantweight equipment, and basketballleagues for all ages.

Policies in the City of Paducahhave helped create an environ-ment that promotes access to nutri-tious foods and opportunities forphysical activity, including aDowntown Farmers’ Market; Bikeson Broadway (on Sunday after-noons the main thoroughfare intodowntown Paducah is closed to allbut cyclists and pedestrians); asidewalk and bike plan developedjointly by the city’s Planning andEngineering Departments; creationof a “Boundless Certified” publicplayground so designated for itsability to accommodate safe play forpersons with disabilities; and a cityemployee wellness program.

Lexington recently opened theLegacy Trail that connects down-town with the Kentucky HorsePark — some eight miles welcom-ing bicyclists, runners and walkersto take in the historic countryside.Lexington also was the birthplaceof Second Sunday, which closes offa part of downtown to vehiculartraffic and encourages healthywalks, runs, or bike rides.Louisville has created a HealthyHometown Movement, placing anemphasis on ways to lead an activelife in the city, and access to freshproduce.

The same Kentucky HealthIssues Poll quoted earlier shows 87percent of respondents stronglyfavor schools providing 30 minutesof physical activity or physical edu-cation in each student’s day. TheDaviess County Public SchoolBoard has demonstrated a commit-ment to healthy nutrition andphysical activity in schools by pro-viding walking trails at all elemen-tary schools; school menu nutritioninformation on their website;healthy choices in school vendingmachines; a healthy a la carte poli-cy regarding food service at conces-

What can employers do? Smallpolicy changes can make a big dif-ference in moving your workplacetoward a culture of health: healthyfood options in vending machinesand at corporate events; walkingbreaks; team sports and fitnesschallenges are a few examples.E.ON US in Louisville has imple-mented a wellness initiative thatincludes the WellFit reimburse-ment program, ChooseWell match-ing grants and the S.M.A.R.T.walking program. The company hasalso been a key supporter for theLouisville Mayor’s HealthyHometown Movement.

Kentuckians weigh too much forour own good, but we also hold thekeys to making our state healthier. Is your nearest school yard open forchildren to play in the afternoon? What’s in your office vendingmachines? What does your churchgroup serve at suppers? Do yourcommunity’s ordinances make ithard to hold a farmers’ market —or welcome them? By making smallpolicy changes at school, at workand in our communities that sup-port healthier lifestyles, together,we will have a positive impact thatextends throughout Kentucky andbeyond. For more than a decade, rebel soldiers from Rwandahave committed atrocities in the neighboring DemocraticRepublic of Congo with almost complete impunity. Theykidnap children, murder men and are conducting astrategic campaign of raping and torturing women. InAugust, the United Nations confirmed that members ofthe Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda, orFDLR, and another militia were responsible for hun-dreds of rapes in the Walekali region — and rape is atepid word for the brutal attacks. ...

Human Rights Watch, the Enough Project, Women forWomen International and many other groups, workingwith Africa-based organizations such as Friends of theCongo, have sustained awareness of a crisis that other-wise would be remote and unseen by much of the world....

Increasingly, activism and art have become partners. This month, the group honored Pulitzer Prize-winningplaywright Lynn Nottage before a performance of hersearing drama "Ruined," about three Congolese rape sur-vivors living in a brothel. In New York, a series of Congo-related films recently kicked off Congo Week.

The arrest and indictment of one FDLR leader will nothalt years of conflict ... Nor can one play, a handful offilms or the work of several charities bring peace toCongo. But taken together, they offer hope.

The shellacking that Hubris wrought

Dear Dr. Brothers:I've been going out withthis really talented guyI met at work. He's real-ly smart, cool, nice-look-ing and all that goodstuff. The thing is, afterabout six weeks Inoticed that he isalways pretty drunk orhigh when we gettogether. He says heworks hard and likes toplay hard too, and thatthat stuff helps himhave a good time. I don'tthink we've ever goneout when he was sober. He says he likes me alot, and I want to believehim, but is it the liquortalking?

J.L.

Dear J.L.: First ofall, I hope someoneelse is driving if yourboyfriend is alwayshigh when you go out.Better yet, maybe youshouldn't go out any-where in the firstplace. It might besafer! And if he isalways drinkingheavily or using ille-gal drugs, is thissomeone you reallywant to be around in

the first place outsideof working in thesame company? Itwould seem that atthe very least, thisguy has a problem.Whether it is a sub-stance-abuse problemor an emotional prob-lem in which he is tooterrified or shy toapproach a woman orsustain a relationshipwithout what we usedto call the "falsecourage" provided byintoxicants is not forme to say. Perhapsyou can figure it out,as you now mustknow him fairly well.

I wonder if you arereally worried aboutanother possibility:that he isn't reallyattracted to you andcan summon theenthusiasm to dateyou only by puttingon those "beer gog-

gles" or however youwant to label the phe-nomenon of yourcompanion lookingmore and moreattractive the drunk-er you get. If this isthe case, it might giveyou a bit of a wake-upcall. Your own self-esteem is an issue ifyou are willing to goout with someone yoususpect doesn't reallylike you. It's time foryou to take a hardlook at this situationand come up withyour own answer.

* * *Dear Dr. Brothers: I

met a girl in my historyclass who really knockedme out. She was verydifferent from the ath-letic and down-to-earthgirls I am used to frommy high school — shewas very sophisticatedand mature and all that.

I invited her on a pic-nic, but when we got tothe park, she was allafraid of bugs, didn'twant to hike in her niceshoes, couldn't cope withsitting on a blanket, etc.I mean, is that normal?Do you think I shouldtry another kind ofdate?

C.S.Dear C.S.: I think

you might want to trya different type ofdate, yes. Maybe witha different type ofgirl! I am joking a lit-tle, because it seemsthat you are prettyimpressed by thisyoung lady becauseshe is so differentfrom the girls you

grew up with. Youridea of a girl to date

may be that sheshould be very differ-ent from the girls youused to hang out within high school. Youprobably didn't datethem, but they wereyour friends andmembers of a groupto chill with.

Now that you are incollege, you maythink that you shouldgo out with someonevery different fromthose hang-out pals. But you don't want tooverlook one fact:You really liked thosepeople for who theywere. This new girlmay look very good toyou because sheseems a bit mysteri-

ous — as you said, you haven't met any-

one like her before! But if you were disap-pointed by her inflex-ibility and her lack ofinterest in com-muning with nature, you at least shouldconsider the fact thatshe willingly wentout with you — theremust be at least thepotential for somekind of spark! Let herpick the venue if youdecide to date heragain. After the sec-ond date, you'll havemore to go on.

You & YoursWeekend Edition, November 6, 2010 Harlan Daily Enterprise — Page 5

It seems like yester-day, but it's actually beenalmost 30 years since thefirst time that Lorettaand I took a stationwagon load of preteenoffspring and theirfriends to Brummet'sOrchard there out on 39,some seven or eightmiles from Crab Orchardas you head out on thecrooked old road towardSomerset.

The parking lot wasfull and customers werelined up to purchase, bythe bushel, winesaps androme beauties and goldenand red delicious andGrime's golden and nameyour favorite heirloomapple.

It was early Octoberand business was briskbut this matron of a ladycame out from behind thecounter to tousle the kids'hair and tell them to helpthemselves to an appleout of the hundreds ofheaping bushel basketsneatly stacked againstthe walls of the concretebuilding. The aromainside the apple housewas so sweet and spicyand intoxicating that ittook our breaths away. And I was thinking thatheaven just might smellthis way in the fall of theyear.

And so began theannual pilgrimage toBrummet's Orchard

where the apples werepicked off some 1,600trees on the rolling acresthere behind the house. And where the Grime'sgoldens tasted like theyhad been spiced on thetree and were so sweetthey made your teethhurt. Somewhere alongthe line, I began writingabout the orchard andthe Brummets in thepaper and we became fastfriends.

We also got to knowone another on a firstname basis even thoughwe only visited once ortwice a year — Mr.Francis and Mrs.Rovenna Brummet.

Francis is Mr.Personality. He could sellice to Eskimos onChristmas Day and makethem feel good about thepurchase. In fact, hewould load it up andcarry it to the sled theway that he hoists 60-pound bushels of applesto the backseat or cargospace of your vehicle.

Rovenna has alwaysbeen the ultimate candi-date for Mrs. Candor.

"He got me in troublewhen I was 14 and myDaddy would have shothim if he hadn't marriedme. I loved getting preg-nant but having babieswas a royal pain in the----." Etc. (She delivered 11and eight are still living).

Rovenna Brummetsort of became a heroineto me as time went by. Ihave listened to her revelof all the hard times sheand Francis wentthrough and I have satthere in the apple housenot knowing when shewas pulling my leg or not.I've heard the storiesabout when she workedin a sewing factory andFrancis sold wagon loadsof peaches door to doorand how he would giveany kid alongside theroad a nice firm peach ifthey couldn't afford tobuy one.

In October 2009,Loretta and I along witha couple of friendsdropped by the orchard topick up a couple bushelsof Grime’s goldens, andRovenna literally sprangfrom behind the counterto love on us.

Francis, as he hasbeen doing for the lastdecade, had a specialpeck of Black Ben Davisapples squirreled wayand Ravenna had a gal-lon zip-lock bag of applesshe had dried outside and

they pressed them uponus. Not that it took anyeffort.

So, last weekendLoretta and I made thepilgrimage in glowingsunlight on a Saturdayafternoon and pulledinto the apple house.Covered up with cus-tomers as usual and herecame Francis, his armswaving and his grin asbig as China when he sawus. Hugs all around andhe grasp my arm as wewent into the building.Francis Brummet is theepitome of youthfulenthusiasm and delighteven though he is 84years old.

But right away, wenoticed that Rovenna wasnot there, and I glancedtoward the farmhousethinking that maybe sheneeded a nap. We satdown in chairs at theback of the apple houseand Francis confided,"You know I lost mywife?"

Of course, we didn'tknow and the lumps inour throat were visible asour eyes welled up and allwas silent for a couple ofminutes as we tried toadjust to this heartbreak-ing news.

"Right where you aresitting," Francis said."She told me she thoughtshe was coming downwith the flu. I went out-

side to load some applesfor a customer and whenI came back in she wasjust leaned back like shehad gone to sleep, but herheart had busted in herchest."

And I thought tomyself how fitting thatshe cross over to theother side from that won-derful old apple houseshe loved as well ashome. RovennaBrummet was 77 years ofage. She was a jewel inmy life and every life shetouched.

"We have talked aboutit over the last few years-about which one of usmight go first," saidFrancis, "and we prom-ised one another thatwe'd just sit there inheaven and twiddle ourthumbs while we waitedto open our arms and wel-come the other onehome."

We drove home prettymuch speechless with abushel each of Romebeauties and Grime’sgoldens after a two-hourvisit with lost and lone-some Francis Brummet, and I began hummingand then singing out loudthe old Cox Family stan-dard.

"I'll be waiting on thefar side banks of Jordan.

“I'll be waiting draw-ing pictures in the sand.

“And when I see you

coming I will rise up witha shout.

“And come runningthrough the shallowwaters reaching for yourhand."

Rovenna Brummetwas an angel on earth, and if she isn't one inheaven, the rest of usmay as well give up. Andyou can bet your bottomdollar that she is waitingfor Francis to be back inher arms.

At this writing,Francis is there in theapple house acting likehe is 50 years old, eventhough he is 84 and lug-ging bushels of apples tothe trunks of waiting carsand the beds of pick-upsas spryly as a teenager. The number at the applehouse is (606)-355-7526,and you probably oughtto call to see what theyhave in stock. I can tellyou for sure, that thegoldens are way beyonddelicious and the Romebeauties are huge andred and sweet and oh sojuicy. I can also tell youthat. If you are down andout, all you have to do isshake hands with FrancisBrummet and you will becheered right up.

Francis says they willbe open seven days aweek through the holi-days or until he runs outof apples. Whichevercomes first.

Sophomore quarterback TySaragas completed 11 of 17 passesfor 279 yards. Sophomores DakotaMorris and David Allen eachhauled in a pair of touchdownreceptions, while junior VinceBianchi and sophomore CodyLogan each added a score.

“We came in and coach (Tony)Saragas kept saying that hethought we could run the football.Well, we don’t need to run the foot-ball,” said Harlan coach J.B.Donahue. “Our line did a great jobin pass protection and I can’t sayenough about Ty. He’s a great deci-sion-maker and threw the ball real-ly well tonight. We had a lot of kidsmake plays at the receiver positiontonight.”

The Green Dragons’ defense wasalso solid, holding Paintsville toonly 107 yards of total offense whileforcing five turnovers.

Sophomore Okey Boggs had aninterception and a fumble recovery,Bianchi had a pair of interceptionsand Logan had one.

“Overall, I was pleased with theeffort that I got on the defense.”said Donahue. “I was upset withthe letdown with the touchdown wegave up right before the half. Ithink we just kind of relaxed andlet him in the end zone.”

Harlan (5-6) struck first asSaragas delivered a shovel pass toLogan who went in from 3 yards out

to cap a 10-play, 56-yard drive with5:14 left in the first quarter.

The Dragons quickly regainedpossession after recovering anonside kick on the ensuing kickoff.Saragas found Morris for a screenplay for a 49-yard touchdown on thesecond play of the drive. Saragasran in the two-point conversion toput Harlan up 14-0 with 4:59remaining in the first quarter.

An interception by Boggs gavepossession back to Harlan on itsown 36, and the Dragons quicklycapitalized.

Bears’ ‘D’ filthy againin victory over TitansBy JOHN HENSONManaging Editor

At some point, the Harlan CountyBlack Bears will probably need tothrow a pass or punt to continueadvancing in the 5A playoffs.

They didn’t need either Friday in a50-13 rout of visiting Mercer County. The Bears’ Filthy Animals defense lim-ited the Titans to minus 17 yards onthe ground and only three first downsand the Harlan County offensive linecontinually opened gaping holes inamassing 473 yards on the ground.

“I think our defense played thegreatest I’ve seen them play,” HarlanCounty coach Tom Larkey said. “I mayhave underestimated our defense oroverestimated their offense when Imade the statement ‘If our defense canhold them, I think we can score andwin the game.’

“Our defense had no problem. Ourproblem at the beginning of the gamewas holding on to the football and try-ing to figure out the plays that would

work against the type of defense theyhad.”

The Bears figured it out soonenough with over 100 yards on theground in each of the first three quar-ters. Junior quarterback Jordy Brewerran for 146 yards and junior tailbackMarcus McMillian added 132.

“I had Travis Fields and JordanCalton back there as our two blockingbacks, and I told our kids at halftimethat’s 450 pounds coming at you,”Larkey said. “I told them there shouldbe no problem, just hit up there behindthose two guys and find you a hole.”

Mercer County (3-8) kept the gameclose for a little over a quarter with thehelp of a turnover and poor kickoff cov-erage.

After McMillian gave the Bears anearly lead with a 1-yard touchdownrun followed by a two-point conversionrun by Dylon Smith, Mercer answeredwhen Donovan Ellis took the ensuingkickoff 85 yards for a touchdown with

After forcing theTigers into a three andout, Saragas connectedwith Morris on anotherscreen, this time a 69-yard touchdown tostretch the lead to 26-0.

“Dakota Morris makesa lot of plays for us onthe screens and makes alot of people miss. Hemade several playstonight,” Donahue said.

An interception byBianchi on the first playof the next drive set

Harlan up with posses-sion at midfield, and theDragons took advantageonce again.

Saragas foundBianchi for a 13-yardtouchdown pass to cap afive-play drive with 24seconds remaining in thehalf.

Friday’s victorymarked the 100th ofDonahue’s career.

“It’s a big honor. A lotof kids and a lot of coach-

es and a lot of people putin a lot of hours of hardwork, starting with myfamily and coachesthrough the years. A lotof people have put inhard work to help me gethere tonight,” Donahuesaid. “I just feel blessedand rewarded to bearound these kids forthis long.”

Harlan will travel toPikeville for a second-round matchup nextFriday. The Dragonsdefeated the Panthers21-14 in the secondround last season.

“We’re going to showup. I think it will take atremendous effort. Theirgoing to be a very disci-plined ball club that’sgoing to be a tough taskto tackle defensively,”Donahue said.“Offensively, I think wejust have to protect Tyand let him make someplays for us.”

CHRIS JONES/

Daily Enterprise

"Offensively, we never gotin rhythm and could notsustain drives. Theoffense was backed up inthe hole all day and hadto take the ball and driveit. We just did not playwell and then lost one ofour key players.

"There was no reasonfor us to not still go outand compete," Strongsaid. "We have to learnhow to play on the road, and we still have not donethat."

That key player wasrunning back BilalPowell, who suffered aninjury to his right knee ona carry early in the secondhalf and did not return.Powell, who was fourth in

the nation in rushingbefore he was hurt, hasaveraged 7 yards a carryand still ranks second inthe Big East at 133.4yards per game.

"If Bilal cannot go, wejust need people to stepup," tight end CameronGraham said. "Part offootball is injuries.Everybody in the countryexperiences it and it ispart of the game. We needpeople to step up."

Though Powell has hadswelling in the knee andis listed as day-to-day, theOrange were preparing asif he would play. Hewon't. Powell and seniorquarterback AdamFroman were listed as outon the Big East injuryreport posted Thursdaynight.

Both teams were

picked to finish at the bot-tom of the league, andboth so far have defied theodds. The Cardinals havetwo shutouts, including26-0 over Connecticut, and the Orange have wonfour times on the road —three of those in the BigEast.

"When you watch themon film, they play hard,"Graham said. "When ateam plays hard andplays a full game, thoseteams tend to win."

The game might comedown to one of those yel-low flags thrown by theofficials. Remarkably,Louisville has been penal-ized 61 times for 500yards and Syracuse, which lost to Pitt at home45-14 three weeks ago,has 60 for the sameyardage.

Ready? Are you sure?Prepared? We hope so. Afterall, it could occur without anynotice whatsoever. No phonecall, no e-mail, no gossip; itjust happens. Picture it:Nearly everyone is seated.Conversations close with ahurried whisper, "I'll talk toyou after church." Mr.Johnson, who always sits onthe back pew, slips in just asthe prelude begins. The dea-cons move their way to thefront. Moments later themusic pauses for a greeting, aprayer, or a meditationpreparing our minds for wor-ship. Except for the whimperof a newborn, an occasionalcough or sniffle, there issilence while the personbehind the podium directs ourthoughts to "things above."Then it happens. The doorslowly creaks open, and gentlycloses. Someone is running alittle late. Probably overslept, possibly feeling a touch underthe weather, perhaps the trainin Black Bottom created adetour. We think nothing ofit; most of us have been late onsome occasion, it's normal. Or,it would be normal on anyother day, though this morn-ing something's amiss.

As the new arrivals search

for a seat, glances becomeglares, holiness is trumpedwith haughtiness, our worshipshifts to wonder. There is asinner in the sanctuary. Theun-churched is in the church. Why? Who invited them? Dothey not know the church is noplace for them.

The Apostle Paul reiteratesa reality that local churchesmust be ready to address.Writing to a particular localchurch many centuries ago, hereminds these Christians: "Ifthe church comes together andsome unbelievers come in."(1Corinthians 14:23). Thereality is that unbelievers willcome into our churches.People are constantly seeking, searching for meaning in lifeand many absorb phonysmiles and cold shoulders andactually work up the nerve toopen the door to a churchbuilding. Are we prepared?

It's interesting how this

problem seems to span thecourse of history. Being unpre-pared to meet the needs ofthose who cross the thresholdsof our church doors is not sole-ly a 21st century problem.Actually, we can trace it allthe way back to the 1st centu-ry. Think about this biblicalexample: "Suppose someonecomes in your meeting dressedin fancy clothes and expensivejewelry, and another comes inwho is poor and dressed indirty clothes. If you give spe-cial attention and a good seatto the rich person, but you sayto the poor one, ‘You can standover there, or else sit on thefloor’ — well, doesn't this dis-crimination show that yourjudgments are guided by evilmotives" (James 2:2-4). Thisparticular example addressesthe marginalization of thepoor, and maybe we do wellwith meeting the needs of thepoor. What about someonewrestling with their sexualidentity? What about theyoung lady with three childrenand no husband?

What about those who dresseccentrically, who cannot andwill not fit the traditionalmold of Christianity? Whathappens when they enter ourbuildings? Are we prepared to

meet their needs or will ourjudgments be guided by evilmotives?

Hopefully, you didn't, butjust in case you answered evilmotives, let me offer two briefobservations that may inspireus to think more positivelywhen unbelievers cross ourpaths on Sunday mornings.First, we must remember thatthe church exists to continual-ly nourish people. One of theelders at our congregationsays it like this: "The churchis not a rest-home for saints,it's a hospital for sinners."How true.

May we never reach thepoint where we neglect ourcall to nourish those we wouldcall sinners.

Secondly, let's be particu-larly clear about the make-upof the church. Simply attend-ing a weekly service does notguarantee salvation.

Neither does such partici-pation with a local body ofbelievers automatically transi-tion one into the Body ofChrist. Consider the biblicallanguage:

"Do you not know that thewicked will not inherit thekingdom of God?" (1Corinthians 6:9), "If we delib-erately keep on sinning after

we have received knowledge ofthe truth, no sacrifice for sinsis left" (Hebrews 10:26), "If weclaim to have fellowship withHim yet walk in the darkness,we lie and do not live by truth"(1John 1:6).

Interestingly, I know of sev-eral congregations where "sin-ners" and "unbelievers" attendregularly. Some of these con-gregations have been criti-cized for their toleration orcondoning of sinful practices.

However, I'm not convincedthat's the case. I'm not con-vinced that all churches whowelcome sinners and unbeliev-ers into their fellowship con-done sinful ways. Though, Iwould agree that thesechurches tolerate sinful ways. Not because the church is hyp-ocritical. Not because theChristians are weak or igno-rant. Not because the moralstandard is crumbling.Simply because these congre-gations consist of men andwomen who allow others tosearch and seek for truth.Men and women who "makethe most of every opportunity"(Colossians 4). Men andwomen who are preparedwhen their church comestogether and some unbelieverscome in.

FROM APASTOR’SHEART

Jesus on keeping apromise — Matthew5:31-37

Cross my heart andhope to die…. Who, as achild has not made thatsolemn oath? As a kid it aserious thing to make sucha promise or a pinky swearor any of a variety of phras-es that said, “No really, Ipromise.” As we grew wemoved from cross my heartto a simple pledge or prom-ise followed by a hand-shake. All of these commu-nicated the same thing, “Iwill do what I have said Iwill do.”

Looking at our worldtoday, can we say thatthese actions still holdtrue? We still make verbalagreements followed by afirm handshake and…alengthy contract thatattempts to cover any pos-sible portal through whichthe promiser may try toexit an agreement made tothe another. When thepromise is broken, depend-ing on who you are talkingto, you will either hear,“He should have read thecontract closer.” Or, “Shesure made a shrewdmove.” The wronged per-son wants to exclaim that apromise is a promise andthe promise-breaker mayjust shrug.

In the Sermon on theMount, Jesus addressesthis conflict by teachingthe gathered about twopromises that most hadexperienced and all knewabout. The passage isMatthew 5:31-37. Thepromises addressed arehumanity’s most sacred, thus being the ones thatshould be kept most dili-gently: a marriage vow anda person’s word. Take amoment, read, pray andseek the heart of God con-cerning how these simpleteachings are lived out inyour life.

As Jesus moves fromHis reminder that the com-mandments of God can beapplied deeper than theobvious, He takes up theissue of promise-keeping.Jesus begins with the mostsacred of all promises, thepromise between a hus-band and wife. TheTeacher often spoke on thetopic. He talked of how Godwas the creator of the rela-tionship called marriage(Matthew 19:5 quotingGenesis 2:24). Like ourday, marriage was held inhigh esteem by the people

Jesus taught. And, like ourday, couples struggled toremain couples. InMatthew 5:31, Jesus men-tioned that society movearound the command ofGod by making divorceacceptable as long as thewoman received a certifi-cate of divorce. This pieceof paper said that thewoman was legally sepa-rated from her husbandand was thus eligible toremarry.

Jesus’ response to thatpractice? Simply put Hesaid, “But I tell you thatanyone who divorces hiswife, except for maritalunfaithfulness, causes herto become and adulteress, and anyone who marriesthe divorced woman com-mits adultery” (v.32). I sus-pect an eyebrow hasraised, a head is shaking, and temptation to stopreading right now is thereon some folks minds. Buthear this out. Rememberthat Jesus is teachingwhat it is to be a good citi-zen in the Kingdom of God,i.e. what it means to live asa Christian. That being thecase, is it not reasonable tobelieve that as a Christiancouple, with the power andwisdom of Christ readilyavailable, that thereshould be no circumstancethat the couple cannotwork through? No doubtthere are many reasonspeople will list for divorcebut Jesus lists one. Sexualactivity outside the mar-riage breaks the most pre-cious promise made, thepromise to be faithful andtrue to another, is theclause by which Jesusstates some may choose todivorce. He did not say aperson had to but appearedto be saying one can. Aswell, in this passage Jesusis not dealing with thewhat-ifs but instead Helays out God’s standards.

It is usually at thispoint the abuse is men-tioned. Jesus is not sayinghere to simply sit downand take it. Actually, He istalking to the vast majorityof marriages breakupshere, those caused becauseone person just doesn’t

want to stay with theother. I suspect that Jesuswould say that the physi-cally abused should putsome distance betweenthemselves and their abus-er. But that’s for anothertime, here Jesus is speak-ing of the most commonreasons. In our day thosereasons are: Number 1 —financial hardship andNumber 2 — marital infi-delity. To this He remindsChristians that a promisemade to our spouse is apromise to be kept.

Jesus moves on to talkabout plain keeping yourword. In verses 33-37,Jesus brings up the matterof making a promise, orvow, and then sealing it byswearing an oath. To thispractice, Jesus simplifiedthe listener’s life by tellingthem to just keep his or herword. Again keep in mindthat Jesus is saying how aperson who claims to bepart of God’s kingdomshould act. Read His wordsagain: “Again, you haveheard that it was said tothe people long ago, ‘Do notbreak your oath, but fulfillto the Lord the vows youhave made.’ But I tell you,do not swear an oath atall…All you need to say issimply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; any-thing beyond this comesfrom the evil one” (vs. 33-34 and 37).

Could Jesus have beenmore clear? In both thesescenarios, when one personmakes a promise to anoth-er, He says a promise is apromise. As a matter offact, Jesus is saying thatwhen a person says he orshe will do something theyshould not even have tosay, “I promise.” Theirwords should be enoughguarantee. Culturally weseemed to have driftedquite a ways away fromJesus mandate.

Christian, how wouldyou rate your word? Dopeople trust you or arethey not surprised whenthe excuses come. Howmany would be happy ifGod kept His word only asoften as they did? Let’s allrenew our commitment tobe husband and wives, con-sumers and providers, stu-dents and teachers, menand women, who know thevalue of integrity. Let’s bepeople who are keepers ofour word.

Next week: An odd kindof love — Matthew 5:38-48

Another election isbehind us. Whether yourside won or lost it isamazing that we have thefreedom to vote. Evenmore amazing is thatpower transfers from oneparty to another withoutbloodshed and violence. This does not happenvery much around theworld, and has happenedvery little in human his-tory. It is one of thethings that makes thisthe greatest nation in theworld today. As impor-tant as free elections are,I do not think they arethe most important thingthat will keep our nationstrong. I think ournation’s faith and trust inGod is the most impor-tant thing, and I want toinvite people of this com-munity to consider a sim-ple way to express this. The following story willclearly illustrate mypoint.

Since 2008, when youdrive throughFrankenmuth, Michigan, you will see many smallsimple crosses in thefront yards of the homes. Those crosses are a state-ment of support forFrankenmuth's Christianfoundation. Two yearsago a local resident com-plained about two crosseson a bridge in town. Herequested that they beremoved, and the townremoved them. He thendecided that the cityshield should also bechanged since it had on it,along with other symbols,a heart with a crossinside signifying the city'sLutheran beginnings.

At this point, the resi-dents decided they had

had enough. Hundreds ofresidents made theiropinions known by plac-ing small crosses in theirfront yards. Seeing thisquiet but powerful state-ment from the communi-ty, the man removed hiscomplaint. Those simplecrosses remain in thosefront yards today.

One anonymous com-mentator writes, “Afterpassing those crosses fortwo years, it finally hitme that a small cross inmillions of front yardsacross our country couldprovide a powerful andinspiring message for allAmericans passing themevery day. I think itmight be time to take thisidea across America.Government officials, theACLU and others are try-ing to remove from ourhistory and current livesany reference to God,prayer or the fact that ourcountry was founded onJudeo-Christian princi-ples. The majority ofAmericans areChristians. Why are weletting this happen tous?”

I invite you to do thefollowing. As you removethe election signs in youryard replace them withcrosses. Psalm 127:1says, “Unless the LORDbuilds the house, Theylabor in vain who build

it…” I believe too manypeople in our nationbelieve we can build thisnation without God. Weneed only look at thegreed, graft and corrup-tion that is taking placeat the highest levels ofgovernment, business, industry and investmentcompanies to see whatmoral bankruptcy cancost our nation. Suchmoral and ethical lapsesare not the fault of onepolitical party or theother. They are a signthat our nation is losingits way.

Our nation is not goingto experience renewaland restoration if it islooking to people whodon’t believe or trust inGod to rebuild it on thefirm foundation ofintegrity. People of faithmust look at their ownchoices and the way theylive their lives and stopcompromising on theirmorals and ethics.

Are you someone whois committed to honestyand integrity in allaspects of your life? Arethere areas that you arecomfortable with compro-mise? What do you do tocommunicate to othersthat it matters when wemake the right moralchoices? Would putting across, two crosses, abunch of crosses in yourfront yard get you startedin making a statement tothe world that God is thepower that built thiscountry, and is going tokeep it strong into thefuture?

BOWLING GREEN (AP)— A day after a winning ahard-fought U.S. Senaterace, Republican Rand Paulsaid he was hopeful a reli-gious attack that backfiredon his opponent will head offsimilar strategies in futurepolitical races.

Nearly four out of fiveKentuckians who voted inTuesday's election said theyfelt Democrat Jack Conwayunfairly attacked Paul byrunning a TV ad that askedwhy Paul was a member in

college of a secret campussociety that mockedChristians and claimed hisgod was "Aqua Buddha,"according to exit polling con-ducted for The AssociatedPress.

Paul denounced the ad asfalse and chastised Conwayfor running it. The spot trig-gered a public outcry acrossthe state and nation.

The Paul campaign airedan ad in response in whichhe said he keeps Christ inhis heart. And former

Arkansas Gov. MikeHuckabee, a pastRepublican presidential can-didate and a Baptist minis-ter, went on Christian radiocalling for Conway to repent.

"I think that you should-n't attack a person's faith, and I think it did backfire onthem," Paul told the AP onWednesday. "My hope isthat when someone losesand that issue appears tohave had an influence thatmaybe it discourages peoplefrom those attacks."
