Installation and Connections

System InstallationAfter unpacking the unit, and placing iton a solid surface capable of supportingits weight, you will need to make theconnections to your audio and videoequipment. These steps need to be doneonly when the receiver is first installed,or when a change is made to the inputsource equipment.

Audio Equipment ConnectionsWe recommend that you use high-qualityinterconnect cables when making connec-tions to source equipment and recordersto preserve the quality of the signals.

When making connections to audiosource equipment or speakers it is alwaysa good practice to unplug the unit fromthe AC wall outlet. This prevents any pos-sibility of accidentally sending audio ortransient signals to the speakers that maydamage them.

1. Connect the analog output of a CDplayer to the CD inputs ¶.

Speaker and Output ConnectionsTo assure that all the audio signals arecarried to your speakers without loss ofclarity or resolution, we suggest that youuse high-quality speaker cable. Manybrands of cable are available, and thechoice of cable may be influenced by thedistance between your speakers and thisreceiver, the type of speakers you use, personal preferences and other factors.Your dealer or installer is a valuableresource to consult in selecting theproper cable.

Regardless of the brand of cable selected,we recommend that you use a cable con-structed of fine, multistrand copper with agauge of 14 or smaller. Remember that inspecifying cable, the lower the number, the thicker the cable.

Cable with a gauge of 16 may be used forshort runs of less than ten feet. We do notrecommend that you use cables with anAWG equivalent of 18 or higher due tothe power loss and degradation inperformance that will occur.

Cables that are run inside walls shouldhave the appropriate markings to indicatelisting with UL, CSA or other appropriatetesting agency standards. Questions aboutrunning cables inside walls should bereferred to your installer or a licensedelectrical contractor who is familiar withthe NEC and/or the applicable localbuilding codes in your area.

Installation and Connections

When connecting wires to the speakers, be certain to observe proper polarity.Remember to connect the “negative” or“black” wire to the same terminal on thereceiver and the speaker. Similarly, the“positive” or “red” wire should be con-nected to the like terminal on the HK3270and speaker.

We also recommend that the length ofcable used to connect speaker pairs beidentical. For example, use the samelength piece of cable to connect the frontleft and front right or surround left andsurround right speakers, even if thespeakers are a different distance fromthe HK3270.

NOTE: While most speaker manufacturersadhere to an industry convention of usingblack terminals for negative and red onesfor positive, some manufacturers mayvary from this configuration. To assureproper phase, and optimal performance, consult the identification plate on yourspeaker, or the speaker’s manual to verifypolarity. If you do not know the polarity of your speaker, ask your dealer for advice before proceeding, or consult the speaker’s manufacturer.

Connect the speakers using the followingsteps:

1. Connect the main speakers to theSpeaker 1 terminals fl.

2. Connect a second set of speakers, or speakers that are in a second roomlocation to the Speaker 2 terminals ‡.

3. When an optional, powered subwooferis used, connect the outputs of theSubwoofer Out jacks fi to the line-level inputs of the subwoofer. When thesubwoofer’s amplifier has stereo inputs, run interconnects from both jacks. Whenthe subwoofer has a mono input only, use the bottom jack for the connection. When a passive subwoofer is used, theseconnections will be made to the optionalamplifier that powers the subwoofer.

System and Power Connections

The HK3270 is designed for flexible usewith external control components andpower amplifiers. These connections areeasy to make during an initial installa-tion, or at a later date should you chooseto upgrade your system.

Remote Control ExtensionIf the receiver is placed behind a solid orsmoked glass cabinet door, the obstruc-tion may prevent the remote sensor fromreceiving commands. In this event, anoptional remote sensor may be used.Connect the output of the remote sensorto the Remote Cont. In jack ¢.

If other components are also preventedfrom receiving remote commands, onlyone sensor is needed. They may use thisunit’s sensor or a remote eye by runninga connection from the Remote Cont.Out jack ∞ to the Remote In jack onHarman Kardon or other compatibleequipment.

External Audio Power AmplifierConnectionsIf desired, an optional, external amplifiermay be used in place of the HK3270’sinternal power amplifier.

To connect an external power amplifier, first remove the jumper pins that connectthe Preamp Out › and Main In ‹

jacks on the rear panel. Keep the jumpersin a safe place should they be needed at alater time.

Using high-quality audio interconnectcables, connect the Preamp Out jacks› to the input jacks on your poweramplifier. Make certain to match theright output to the right input and theleft output to the left input.

Note that when an external power ampli-fier is used, no special adjustments arerequired. All volume and other controladjustments are made using the standardfront panel or remote controls.

AC Power ConnectionsThe Accessory Outlets ° receivepower as long as the Main PowerSwitch 1 is in the “ON” position.Power will still be supplied to these out-lets even when the HK3270 is in theStandby mode.

In order to remove power to these outlets, the unit must be turned off by pressingthe Main Power Switch 1 so that it isin the “OFF” position.

Speaker Placement

For optimal listening enjoyment, and forsoundfield reproduction that best re-createsthe original recording, it is good practice to place the speakers so that they form atriangle with the speakers at the front of the room, and the preferred listening spotat the third point of the triangle. Thedistance between each speaker and thelistener should be identical.

For example, if the speakers are 2.5meters from one another, each of thespeakers should optimally be placed sothat they are also 2.5 meters from the lis-tener. It is also desirable to place speakersso that their tweeters, or high-frequencydrivers are aimed at ear height when youare seated in the listening position.

To optimize the soundfield, or to suit your listening room environment, youmay find that some experimentation isrequired to find the correct location.Ideally, pans from left to right across thefront of the room should sound smooth, and instruments should appear to becoming from the proper location to wherethey would be placed in an orchestra.

The placement of subwoofers should bedone as suggested in the manufacturer’sinstructions. In general, subwoofers oftenproduce best results when they are placedin the corner of a room, but optimal place-ment will vary widely depending on roomsize, the subwoofer type and the placementof rugs and furniture in a room.

Finally, when all connections are com-plete, plug the power cord into a non-switched 120-volt AC wall outlet. You’reready to enjoy the HK3270!
