    Not worth the candle Pg 197 (meaning it was worthlessto argue with the Walrus)

    This phrase relates to occupations, games etc. that werethought so lacking in merit that it wasn't worth the

    expense of a candle to create enough light to partake inthem. Candles were as significant a drain on householdexpenses as is the electricity bill today. There are severalphrases in English that express regret at having wasted

    valuable candlelight.

    The battle between the Guppees and Chupwalas is areference to wars that are not fought for chivalrous orrighteous reasons, but for political, social and religiousreasons.

    Also, when the two armies were fighting, they were allwearing nosewarmers that made them look likeclowns and idiots. This further emphasizes how foolishit is to go to war. Punitive peace proves; so dont evengo to war.

    Angelfish, sharks and the Plentimaw Fishes. (In termsof size, the Plentimaw Fishes are comparable to sharkswhile their shape is similar to those of angelfish.)

    the same and both are taking away somethingimportant. For instance, Mr. Sengupta took awaySoraya while Khattam-Shud is destroying the Ocean.)

    The citizens of K and most of the Chupwalas. (A

    dictator oppresses both.) The Union of Zipped Lips and the phrase Zip the

    Lips (see pg 49). (The phrase was foreshadowing tothe Union of Zipped Lips, a group of evil Chupwalaswho dont speak.)
