Harrisdale Primary School NEWSLETTER Issue 8: 8th June 2018 From the PrincipalDear Parents and Carers, Thank you to all the families- the mums, dads, grandparents and children for your incredible efforts over the past four weeks of swimming lessons. It has required an enormous team effort between school and home to coordinate all of our students to have access to swimming lessons, and I thank you all for your part in making the lesson period run smoothly. A big thank you also to our staff for their hard work and flexibility during this time. Dont forget to book your parent interview time with your childs teacher. These are currently open on Trybooking and will close next Tuesday, 12th June so that teachers can do their prepara- tion. Wednesday, 20th June will be our Harrisdale Primary School Spelling Bee. We fully understand that this competition is not for everyone and no one will be made to participate. We also remind everyone, that this is a bit of fun to encourage good spelling. Correction: Last newsletter I indicated that completing the NAPLAN testing online might mean that results would come in earlier, however this is not the case. Because only 20% of schools conducted the tests online, we still have to wait for the manual marking of those paper-based tests so that our results can be compared to other schools in WA and Australia. Sadly, Ms Weldon, our Senior Art specialist teacher has been very unwell in hospital over the past few weeks. Unfortunately, she will be unable to return to work this term. Im sure you will all join with me in wishing her a speedy recovery. We hope she is feeling much better soon. NEWSLETTER Issue 8: 8th June 2018

From the Principal…

Dear Parents and Carers,

Thank you to all the families- the mums, dads, grandparents and children for your incredible efforts over the past four weeks of swimming lessons. It has required an enormous team effort between school and home to coordinate all of our students to have access to swimming lessons, and I thank you all for your part in making the lesson period run smoothly. A big thank you also to our staff for their hard work and flexibility during this time.

Don’t forget to book your parent interview time with your child’s teacher. These are currently open on Trybooking and will close next Tuesday, 12th June so that teachers can do their prepara-tion.

I’m sure you will all join with me in wishing her a speedy recovery. We hope she is feeling much better soon.

SCHOOL BOARD

Recently, the School Board Chair and I asked for expressions of interest for two positions for Board members who were reaching the end of their tenures. We have had three expressions of interest from our school community, which is great! However, this will mean that we will need to go to an election for these two positions. You will receive an email link shortly to vote. Remem-ber these people will be representing the views of our school community so please get involved in the voting process.

Open School Board Meeting and

Presentation by the Commissioner For Children and Young People, Mr Colin Pettit

Wednesday, June 20, 6.00pm

Each year the school is required to hold an open school board meeting that members of the school community can attend. Whilst school community members cannot comment or vote on any of the agenda items, it is an opportunity to see the types of conversations, decisions and actions undertaken by the School Board.

In 2018, we have decided to combine the open school board meeting with a presentation by one of our school board members, Mr Colin Pettit. Mr Pettit currently serves as the Commis-sioner for Children and Young People and has recently been presenting to WA communities on ‘How Students Engage with School and Learning’. This would be a terrific presentation for par-ents to attend.

The 40 -45 minute presentation will precede the School Board Meeting which will run for a fur-ther 45 mins. You can choose to attend the presentation only, or stay for both the presentation and the meeting. Please consider if you would like to attend. We will put this on the Trybooking system next week.

KINDERGARTEN 2019 Whilst we continue to take applications for kindergarten enrolment, we are currently holding dis-cussions with the Department of Education about our capacity to accommodate kindergarten en-rolments in 2019.

Our projected enrolments in the compulsory years of schooling (Pre-Primary to Year 6) for 2019 continue to grow and we must assess the school’s capacity to accommodate both compulsory and pre-compulsory aged students.

REPORTS

Will be distributed via an email link on Friday, 29th June. Please ensure the office has your cor-

rect email addresses, especially in the situation of split families.

Opting out of digital reporting is through an opt out form (provided in the last newsletter or you can notify the front office staff)

ART grades for students in Ms Weldon ’s classes will not be available this semester. She has been very unwell and is unable to complete reports at this time. Art will be reported on by Ms Weldon in second semester. We apologise for any inconvenience but this cannot be helped.

Adam Hall and the Velvet Players Incursion

We were very excited to host a great Musica Viva in Schools concert by the talented Adam Hall and the Velvet Players on Wednesday, 6th June. Students enjoyed a wonderful interac-tive performance showcasing jazz and blues pieces complementing student learning in mu-sic. Congratulations to all of the students who joined the band on stage either scatting or playing instruments. Thanks you to the many parents who also attended. We can’t wait to see which amazing group we can book for 2019!

UP COMING EVENTS

IPS REVIEW AND REPORT You will remember at the end of last term that the school underwent a school review process as an accountability mechanism for Independent Public Schools. This occurs every three years. For two days, independent reviewers from the Department of Education Services came into the school to rigorously interrogate data, planning, policies, processes and strategies; and to interview the Ex-ecutive Team, members of the School Board, staff, students and parents. At the conclusion of this review, the reviewers wrote a report which was presented to the School Board and Principal, and also submitted to the Director General of Education.

We are very pleased and proud to have received an excellent report from the reviewers which you can access on our school website via this link http://www.harrisdaleps.wa.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/IPS-Review-Findings-Report-2018-Harrisdale-Primary-School1.pdf

The report is 19 pages, and too large to attach to the newsletter, so we have added the conclud-ing statement from the report for

CONCLUSION FROM IPS REVIEW

The challenges of developing a new school with a rapidly increasing student enrolment with di-

verse student backgrounds have been met by the leadership and staff of Harrisdale Primary

School in an exemplary manner. The student-centred vision, mission, beliefs and values devel-

oped for the school are evident in all aspects of school, teacher, student and community relation-

ships and actions.

The focus on developing the whole child through the development of contemporary, consistent,

well researched and collaborative practice by committed staff is highly evident. The comprehensive

business plan provides the foundation for the goals and strategies to enhance and improve student

learning and establish connections between students, community and school.

The school has utilised its resources to ensure access for students to an education that meets their

language backgrounds and learning needs. Contemporary practice is evidenced by the use and

teaching of digital technologies as a feature of learning processes that respond to the context of

the students and their expectations for the future.

The leadership and staff of Harrisdale Primary School are commended for the development of a

safe, calm and inclusive learning environment; for the strategies to involve and engage the com-

munity; and for the high level recognition and ownership by students and the community of it being

‘their school’.

Students’ personal achievements...

The annual TSKF (Traditional Shotokan Karate Federation) State Championships was hosted and held in Harvey this past weekend and two of our girls achieved amazing results.

Cayleigh Erasmus who is a 2nd Kyu brown belt, won a gold medal in her individual kata against some stiff competition and a bronze in team kata and kumite. She was also chosen from many competitors from the Harvey, Geraldton and Perth dojos as the Best Female Karateka for 2018 and received a trophy for her efforts.

It was the first ever state titles that Chanlee Meiring had ever attended and she achieved fantastic results by winning a silver medal in individual kata, a bronze in team kata and a silver in kumite. Chanlee holds the rank of orange belt (7th kyu).

Well done to both girls. We are all proud of your efforts.

SPELLING BEE..

THE READING CORNER

At Harrisdale, we value story time and encourage you to read aloud with your children. In each newsletter, we will be encouraging you to read a different text type with your child. This week, we encourage you to discuss a persuasive text with your child. It could be an advert, letter or even a poster. What is the writer trying to do? Who are they trying to persuade? Are you convinced? What’s your opinion?

Our homework guidelines state that home reading should occur every day. As a Digitech school, students should be recording their home reading in their digital home reading logs.

To find out more ideas and resources, look up the ‘Never Stop Reading’ initiative on the Depart-ment of Education Website: https://www.education.wa.edu.au/neverstopreading
