HARRY AINLAY HIGH SCHOOL Where Character Counts
Principal’s Message
Semester 1 is complete with positive results. Many students completed semestered courses and
began new courses February 1, while the majority are continuing with full year classes. I am
very pleased to announce a 96% pass rate for students in their first semester courses. With that
being said, we still need to concentrate on keeping up with our students by reviewing course
material, keeping good notes, attending extra help sessions when needed and balancing activities.
Keep good communication with school and home by looking at our website and using school
zone for information.
This semester we have a few new teachers who have joined our staff Melaine Masson,
Katherine Hutter and Colleen Pearce. I want to welcome our new SRO Constable Scott Plesuk
to Harry Ainlay as he is replacing Constable Dale Myhre who is temporarily promoted to acting
sergeant. Also joining our team is Stan Seifiddine (educational assistant) in the Interactions
Program, Benedict Hipol (custodian), Peter Ruttan as our new head chef in the cafeteria and
Joanne Bonkowski (cosmetology technician).
As this semester continues I would encourage all parents to attend our Parent Council, next
monthly meeting is Monday, March 22.
Helpful Reminders
1) Check school zone for important information.
2) Call in for student absences.
3) Encourage students to get involved in school life ie. track & field, clubs, etc.

ATHLETICS
Basketball
Jr. Men’s Basketball – We are undefeated in
season play with just over two weeks left in the
regular season. We still have to face Jasper
Place, Ross Shep and Scona in season play and
could use all the fan support possible. The boys
are excited to finish up regular season play and
jump into playoffs. After a hard fought battle in
the semi-finals of Jr. Tri-Prov, the team
overcame Jasper Place School for 3rd
place in
the tournament.
Bike Tour Team
Harry Ainlay MS Bike Tour Team
Congratulations to Stephen Smolski who won
Harry Ainlay’s T-Shirt competition this year.
Football
The football players are
currently training twice a
week before school to get
ready for the 2010 football
season. They meet in the mornings at 7:45 am
to work on strength, speed and agility in the new
Harry Ainlay Fitness Centre. The senior team is
looking forward to defending their city
championship title this year and the junior team
hopes to return to the city finals. The senior
team will be travelling to California to play an
exhibition game against a team from Coronado,
CA near San Diego and are currently
fundraising for that. Please keep posted for
dates of the spring camp for both Grade 9’s and
current Harry Ainlay Players. For all
information regarding Harry Ainlay Football be
sure to visit our great website at this is only for
http://ainlay.ca/athletics/teams/football/.
Golf Team
Although there is still snow on the ground,
golfing season will soon be upon us. The
tournaments are during the school day and take
place at golf courses in the Edmonton area. If
you are in Grade 10 or 11 and are interested in
joining the golf team, please see Mrs. Bandola
in Room 439 or Mr. Fung in Room 640.
Water Polo
Titans Water Polo is back for a second season
this year. So far the team has won its first two
games (14-2 and 30-1). With a large number of
returning players from last year, the team is
improving much faster than last year. We have
4 more league games and are hoping to improve
on last year’s 3rd
place finish.
CALM
HEALTHY MINDS – BRIGHT FUTURES
Students in Career and Life Management are
learning about the six dimensions of wellness
including physical, intellectual, social, spiritual,
vocational and mental. The focus at the present
time is on mental wellness. The classroom
presentation reduces stigma around mental
illnesses and helps the students to understand
the difference between feeling blue and
experiencing a serious depression.
The most important factor for success for
dealing with a mental health issue is support.
Teachers are a part of their students’ support
system. The booklet developed by the ATA
(Alberta Teachers’ Association) and CMHA
(Canadian Mental Health Association), entitled
Compassionate Classrooms-Understanding
Student Mental Health is presented and
distributed to each CALM student during
regular CALM classes.
The www.ok2bblue website is an amazing
website presented to students and is another
resource for strategies to deal with students in
sensitive situations.
FRENCH IMMERSION
Our French Immersion students and teachers
have begun a very busy second semester of
celebrations and activities. To kick off the
second semester, French Immersion staff, along
with students Kirsten LePage, Alyssa
Hammer, Nicole Terry, and Blair Warren
were present at the French Immersion
Information night on February 1
to answer
questions from students and parents. The
evening was designed to provide information to
grade nine students and their parents who wish
to come to Harry Ainlay High School.
Zone by Marcel Dubé (our French Play)
On Tuesday and Wednesday, February 23 and
24, some of our Grade 12 French Immersion
students performed in front of their peers and
other French Immersion students. The Grade 8
French Immersion students from Avalon,
Kenilworth and McKernan Junior High Schools
were also in the audience.
Félicitations! Chapeau!.
Franco 7
M. Marc Farley, M. Jean-Proulx, a group of
Harry Ainlay French Immersion students, and
staff offered their assistance to the French
Immersion Junior High Schools in the district
on Monday, February 22, at Fort Edmonton
Park. Our students spent the entire day working
with narrators, actors, musicians and teachers to
present aspects of French Canadian culture to
students from five of the district’s immersion
schools. Junior high students spent the day
learning about music, dance, traditional clothing
and early history while being immersed in the
surroundings of Fort Edmonton. The day is a
unique way for Harry Ainlay High School
students to share their language skills and
knowledge with over 250 young students who
have been developing their love for a second
language.
DELF
Harry Ainlay High School is proud to offer for
the third year, to our French Language Arts 30
and 30I students, the opportunity to write the
DELF or DALF exam. Le Diplôme d'études de
langue française (DELF) and le Diplôme
Approfondi de la Langue Française are an
international diploma officially awarded by the
French Ministry of Education to certify the
French language skills of individuals from
outside France. Students will write the DELF in
April. They will be assessed on the same
international language standards as candidates
in 161 countries. The diploma will also certify
their French language achievements and enrich
their résumés.
INTERNATIONAL
BACCALAUREATE
We are now officially half way through the
school year and continue to see growth and
improvement from the excellent group of
students involved in the IB program. Grade 12
IB students have already handed in many of
their major internal assessment material in
courses such as English, French and History.
We would like to congratulate all full Diploma
students for completion of the Viva Voce and
Extended Essay. Full Diploma Students are
reminded that the deadline for completion of
CAS Logs is Monday March 1, and Science
IA materials are due in prior to Friday, March
5. Japanese, German and Spanish IA’s will
occur in early March. Students should consult
their agenda books for the schedule.
All Grade 12 IB students should be starting to
set aside some study time for review of
previously covered curriculum as the May
Exams will sneak up on us before we know it.
The IB Art Examinations will be held on April
7 and 8. The IB Art Show has been rescheduled
to Friday April 9. Please attend this outstanding
exhibition!
All students who registered to write IB exams in
May must attend a MANDATORY information
session on Thursday April 15, in the Theatre.
Exam protocol will be covered and an exact
timetable of exams will be handed out at this
meeting. Students will also fill out an IB
Transcript request form at the meeting.
Grade 10 and 11 students will need to start
considering possible courses that they will follow
in the IB program next year. Registration for next
year will happen in a few short months. Students
should try to investigate courses they need for
entrance into the post-secondary institution of
their choice in order to pursue their desired career
path. Students and parents should also visit
http://www.ibo.org/ibna/recognition/slideh.cfm
which houses an incredible reference bank of
information about IB admission and award
policies around the globe.
If students have any questions or concerns about
the IB program, please see Ms. Fischer in
Room 440 (am) or 305 (pm) in the near future.
Diploma Schedule
To ensure the most optimal level of achievement as well as the most accurate results, it is imperative
students write exams on scheduled exam days. Therefore students who are unable to write June exams
for reasons that can be altered (ie. vacations, general medical appointments, etc), opportunity will be
provided to write all missed exams on Friday, August 27, 2010. Please contact Ms. Belyea if such an
arrangement needs to be made. Although the diploma schedule is already set for June, the remainder of
the schedule will be posted on School Zone in the next few weeks as our Semester 2 classes settle.

Change for Change
In February, Harry Ainlay held a fundraising
campaign “Change for Change” for the Haitian
Earthquake Relief led by Kriti Singh and
Sameer Dhar, under the guidance of Mr.
Heidt and Ms. Fischer. From February 2 to
February 12 a large, clear box, made by Mr.
Mazur’s students, was placed in the center of
the Rotunda to collect any loose change that
students were willing to donate. Additionally,
from February 8 to 12, volunteers collected
large tax deductable cash and cheque donations.
The total amount collected for the Red Cross
and Free the Children foundations by the 12th
of
February was $6,700.00 The Canadian
government matched our donations, therefore
the total contribution from Harry Ainlay was
approximately $13,400.00 The ability of our
school to come together and achieve such a
great goal is truly commendable and this
campaign clearly serves as an example of how
anything is possible when a group of young
people work towards a common goal. Well done
Titans!
