Harry Callahan

Harry Morey Callahan (October 22, 1912– March 15, 1999) was an American photographer who is considered one of the great innovators of modern American photography. He was born in Detroit, Michigan and started photographing in 1938. By 1946, he was appointed to teach photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago. Callahan retired in 1977, at which time he was teaching at the Rhode Island School of Design.

•This picture is interesting

•I think it is kind of strange

•I wonder what he was thinking when deciding to take this picture

He photographed his wife, Eleanor, and daughter, Barbara, and the streets, scenes and buildings of cities where he lived, showing a strong sense of line and form, and light and darkness. He also worked with multiple exposures. Callahan's work was a deeply personal response to his own life.

•This picture is boring, but it does look pretty

•Reminds me of loneliness

•This picture shows a very good range of contrast, especially because the room through the door is black

•The element that could be applied to this picture could be lines because of the railing and it looks like it is getting narrower to the door

•The main focal point of this picture is the center where the doorway is

•This picture shows balance because both halves of the picture are the same

•I like the coloring in this picture. I think it looks good how the trees are really dark and the snow and the background is white

•The main focal point is the tree that is more out than the others, especially because it is significantly thicker

•Rule of thirds- her head is directly in the middle and clearly the main focal point

•I like how you can see the reflection of her face in the water

•It is very interesting the way her hair is and I think it really makes the picture

•This picture shows simplicity

•I really like how the sun is coming in and where it is hitting her

•The contrast makes the picture look really good since mostly everything is black then she’s there with the sun coming in on the side

•I also like how you can see the window in the corner

•I like how the man looks with the shadow of him moving

•It looks really good that the background is so simple so you really focus on him

•I also the contrast with the sky being light and everything else being darker

•In this picture, I like how her face expression matches the picture, just simple

•It looks good how the end her hair is just floating in the water

•I like how the front of the water is clear and the back isn’t

•Her face is the main focal point, and it really brings her face out that it kind of matches the color of the background of the top

•It also looks good how her hair is so dark and the rest of the picture is really light

•This picture is kind of boring and very simple

•It looks good how the plant is really dark and then the background snow is very white

•The compositional element in this picture could be balance, because if you cut the picture in half it is basically the same thing

•I like the contrast in this picture and that the branches are black and the snow so white

•It is very simple and plain

•It is a kind of boring picture, but I think the angle makes it look better
