1 Introduction
1.1 Scope and Purpose
This document describes the HART Device Descriptor for the Tracerco T221 Optimus™. It
is intended to aid in interfacing to a Tracerco Optimus™ using the Device Descriptor1. It
only covers the device features which can be accessed using the HART Device Descriptor
and is not intended to describe the full HART interface of the device.

2 Product Overview Optimus™ is a nucleonic level system. It consists of:
• Up to four Tracerco PRI 150 radiation detectors
• Nucleonic sources
• T221 Optimus™ control module.
Together, these provide a non-invasive method that can determine the system level.
Due to unique and specialist algorithms, which are implemented in the Optimus™ control
module, the provided level is resilient to:
• Product Build-Up on the vessel walls
• Pressure fluctuations
• Spray and Mists.
This makes the system usable where other standard nucleonic level systems would be
inaccurate.
The Optimus™ control module has additional features such as the ability to provide an
indication of the level of build-up that is present on the vessel wall. This information is
accessible through the DD.

3 Device Descriptor Overview The DD is intended to allow enhanced monitoring of Optimus™. It enables all Device
Variables to be read as well as comprehensive device status.
Some basic device configuration and calibration is also supported. However, full device
calibration is beyond the scope of the DD and is supported by other tools.
The DD also allows an operator to issue Device Reset and Squawk commands to
Optimus™.

4 Menu Structure The menu structure of the DD is illustrated below.
The menu structure is based on the standard layout suggested by the HCF. Additional
menus have been added under Process variables and Status to better organise the
information.

5 Process Variables The device supports 151 Device Variables, all of which can be read using the DD.
5.1 Process Level
This device variable represents the process level and is resistant to:
Solids build-up on the vessel wall
Variations in pressure
Units: percent
5.2 Maximum Build-Up
Optimus™ is capable of providing an up to date indication of solids build-up on the vessel
wall for stages that are in the gas phase. This Device Variable reports the value of the
stage with the maximum build-up present.
Units: cm
5.3 Elevation of Maximum Build-Up
Optimus™ is capable of providing an up to date indication of solids build-up on the vessel
wall for stages that are in the gas phase. This Device Variable reports the elevation of the
centre of the stage with the maximum build-up present.
Units: percent
5.4 Average Gas Phase Build-Up
Optimus™ is capable of providing an up to date indication of solids build-up on the vessel
wall for stages that are in the gas phase. This Device Variable reports the average build-
up of all stages currently in the gas phase.
Units: cm
5.5 Average Total Build-Up
Optimus™ is capable of providing an up to date indication of solids build-up on the vessel
wall for stages that are in the gas phase. This Device Variable reports the average build-
up of all stages.
Units: cm
MD1079 Rev. D 8 of 14
5.6 Process Level by Traditional Calculation
This Device Variable provides the process level as it would have been reported using
traditional nucleonic calculation. This level is NOT resistant to:
• Solids build-up on the vessel wall
• Variations in pressure
Units: percent
5.7 Radiation Source Strength
Radiation sources decay with time. The amount of decay is related to the radio nuclide.
This Device Variable reports the source strength as a percentage of its strength at the
calibration date.
Units: percent
5.8 Normalised Stage Count Rates
Optimus™ supports up to 72 stages. Each stage has a count rate between 0 and 1 which
represents the amount of radiation incident on that stage. These normalised count rates
are represented by these Device Variables. The number of these device variables shown
will automatically adjust for the number of stages present.
Units: none
5.9 Build-Up Per Stage
Optimus™ is capable of providing an up to date indication of solids build-up on the vessel
wall for stages that are in the gas phase. These Device Variables report the amount of
build-up present for each stage. The number of these device variables shown will
automatically adjust for the number of stages present.
Units: cm

6 Dynamic Variables Four Dynamic Variables are implemented. The Primary Variable (PV) has a fixed mapping
to Device Variable 0, Process Level. The other three Dynamic Variables have a configurable
mapping to any Device Variable.
The default Dynamic Variable mapping is shown below:
Dynamic Variable Device Variable Number Name
PV (Fixed) 0 Process Level
SV 1 Maximum Build-Up
TV 2 Elevation of Maximum Build-Up
QV 4 Average Gas Phase Build-Up
The Dynamic Variable mapping can be viewed and edited under the Basic Setup menu.

7 Status Information The Status menu contains numerous status flags. These are described in the following
table.
Flag Class Description
Channel n Enabled The system has been configured to use this detector channel.
Channel n GM Failure Warning At least one GM tube has failed in the
detector connected to this channel
Channel n Not Found Error The Optimus™ control module could not communicate with a PRI150 radiation
detector on this channel.
Channel n Config Mismatch Error The PRI150 radiation detector connected to this channel is different that which has been configured. This may be the number of stages or the type (S or D).
Channel n Hardware Write Protect Set
Error The PRI150 radiation detector connected to this channel has its hardware write protect jumper enabled.
Channel n Incorrect Firmware Version
Error The PRI150 radiation detector on this channel has a version of firmware that is not
compatible with the Optimus™ control
module.
RTC Fault Warning The real time clock in the Optimus™ control module has failed or has never been set.
Radiography Detected Warning The system has detected that radiography is
being conducted and therefore the level output may not be an accurate representation of the process.
In Discovery Mode Mode The system is in detector discovery mode
Build-Up Alarm Warning The system has detector an excessive amount of solids build-up in the vessel. The accuracy of the reported level may be compromised.
Stage Failure Warning The GM tubes for an entire stage have failed. If the level is in the vicinity of this stage then
accuracy will be reduced.
Critical Stage Failure Error A stage which is configured as critical has failed.
Linearisation Table Fault Error There is an error with the configuration of
the linearisation table.
Trim Point Fault Error This is an error with the trim point configuration.
Warm Up Error The system is still warming up after a reset or cold start. It will resume normal operation
after the warm up phase is complete.
MD1079 Rev. D 11 of 14
Flag Class Description
Non-Volatile memory failure Warning An error was found in the non-volatile memory. Some or the entire configuration may have been lost.
Watchdog reset executed Warning The Optimus™ control module detected an internal fault and performed a device reset to recover.
Device Configuration Locked Mode The configuration of the Optimus™ control module is write-protected.
There are also sub menus under the Status menu for each detector channel. These display
the following information.
Item Description
Channel n stages The actual number of stages in the detector connected to this channel.
Channel n detector type The actual type of the radiation detector connected to this channel. S for single, D for double.
Channel n number of failed tubes
The number of GM tubes that have failed in the radiation detector connected to this channel.
Channel n communication errors
A count of the number of communication failures between the Tracerco Optimus™ control module and the radiation
detector connected to this channel. Cleared by a device reset
or power cycle.

8 Device Configuration The DD supports some basic configuration of the device:
The Device Information menu allows viewing and editing of the following standard HART
items: Tag, Descriptor, Date, Long Tag and Final Assembly Number.
The HART Polling Address can be configured using the HART output menu.
The Loop current mode can be configured in the Analog output menu. The same menu
also allows a loop test to be run and the loop current DAC to be calibrated.
If it is desired to change the range that the loop current represents, this can be achieved
using the Range values edit display which is located under the Basic setup menu.
