Fall into Fun, Fellowship,

and Faithfulness!

Since school begins so early this year (August

3rd), fall seems to be even closer than ever. The

“Summer of Fun” was just that. Usually things slow

down during the summer months, but this year, we

did not skip a beat as programs were continually

improved and highlighted. Also, our hats must go

off to Troy and our mission committee as they

worked to improve the lives of many in our region and in our own

community.

Pecan (Carya illinoensis) pronounced (‘pee – kan) where they are

grown and (pi – ‘kan) everywhere else and when ordering the pie.

Fall for me, growing up in Warrenton, was always a special time as

well as a precarious one. At the home where I grew and lived for eight-

een years, the back yard is covered by a canopy of various varieties of

pecan trees. We have varieties such as “Suart,” “Van Deman,” and

“Jewet.” I would collect the nuts from the six trees over the years and

make a little money. But with the harvest came the possibility of ca-

lamity. A falling pecan, especially one in August that was just dropped

by a squirrel, could lead to a severe headache or a cut somewhere.

Also, they can dent a car! What a bounty, however, when they were

collected, and I received a few dollars for a couple of pounds. I re-

member my mother, grandmother and grandfather gathering pecans

with me. I also, will never forget when my Aunt Katherine got hit on

the head by a falling “Van Deman.” These large pecans almost gave

her a concussion.

These were wonderful times to remember. I knew when the pecans

were falling, that it was time to begin a new school year, begin a new

year of church activities and begin the preparation for winter and

Christmas activities. This year will be not different, except a little ear-

lier. This year will be filled with opportunities for fun and fellowship.

Please try to be a part of these activities. Especially as we challenge

ourselves through Spiritual growth and faithfulness. We need you, and

I believe that this community needs our church.

What is a “Care Group?” The last couple of years we have had many new families join our church. Frequent questions are, “What is a Care Group?” and “What do they do?” There are 6 care groups, that serve two months of the year. When a

member of our church passes away, the care group provides a meal for the family. The Care Group is published monthly in the newsletter. Each group will be published between July and December. Please look through these list over the next six months, if your name is not in a group and you want to be in a group or if you want to be re-moved from a group, please call Dell at the church office (706)376-3164.

A Note of Thanks The family of Harvey Vollrath would like to express our sincere appre-ciation for the love, kindness and comfort shown to us by our Hartwell First United Methodist church family during the loss of our beloved hus-band, father and "Paw-Paw." Thank you all for your cards, calls,

prayers and words of encouragement during the most difficult time of our lives. We would like to especially thank Lynne Glasco, Pastor Stewart, and the entire office staff for being our voice to the outside world when we were simply unable to com-municate to our friends concerning Harvey's condition. In addition, our sin-cere appreciation to Pastor Stewart, Fran Heard, Lynne Glasco, Jan Bowers, and Jody DiMarco for the beautiful words and music during the service and to the June Care Group for providing a wonderful meal for our family and friends. With sincere love and gratitude, The Vollrath Family
