Harvard College was founded in 1636 in Cambridge,Massachusetts, as an institution from which theleadership of church, state, and trade was expected

to emerge. Today Harvard has evolved into a majoruniversity with a multitude of faculties, students, facilities, and purposes.

There are over 3,800 international students currentlyenrolled in the various schools and departments atHarvard. More than 3,600 scholars from abroad areteaching and pursuing research or other advanced stud-ies either as affiliates of the various graduate schools, oras associates of one of the many international institutes.

International visitors often are surprised to find that auniversity of such size and scope is not centrally gov-erned by a single administrative organization. Harvard’sorganizing style is the opposite. While the ultimateauthority rests with the President and the GoverningBoards of the University, many of the crucial decisionsabout curriculum and student life are delegated to thefaculties that oversee Harvard College, the graduateschools, and the Division of Continuing Education. Eachfaculty is headed by a dean appointed by the President, and each is directly responsible for its own financesand organization. The decentralized model is at onceHarvard’s most liberating feature from an administrativepoint of view, and also its most perplexing characteristicwhen approached from an international perspective.Students and scholars from other countries will find thattheir first task is to determine which division of HarvardUniversity would provide them with the education theyare seeking, and then to learn the best way to obtain theinformation necessary to apply for admission.

WHERE IS HARVARD?Harvard University is located in Cambridge,Massachusetts, a traditional New England city with apopulation of over 100,000.
