How this year is flying by, already the blossom is in full bloom, and there is new growth everywhere and the daffodils are long past their best! In our household it means that Cricket has been added to the assortment of activities being regularly attended. Fortunately my eldest can walk himself to and from the cricket ground so it hasn’t impacted Mum’s taxi service yet - but then he hasn’t had an away match this year yet!

The next edition will be distributed to you from 30th May, just ahead of all the Jubilee celebrations. Please ensure that anything that you would like to be included is with me by Monday 12th May.

A message from the Vicarage

As many of you know, I love football. I acknowledge that my team Liverpool haven’t done very well in the last few seasons, but since I am a woman of

faith I believe things can improve. Next season … you wait.

One of the remarkable things about the game is that those who support football are never afraid to show their emotions. The joy which follows a win can be unbridled. The sorrow at a loss can sometimes feel overwhelming. I’ve seen grown men and women cry, both in jubilation and mourning. It’s difficult to explain to non sports lovers, but those of us who do follow a team will understand what I am saying.

Of course there are times when there is little to be proud of when it comes to the outpouring of feeling shown by fans. We often hear of verbal abuse, racist, homophobic and sexist, on the terraces. And still worse there is the occasional physical violence too. The beautiful game also has a very ugly side to it too.

But just a few weeks ago we saw football supporters and players behaving so impeccably that there appeared to be almost universal praise for all concerned. When Bolton’s Fabrice Muamba collapsed on the pitch at White Heart Lane suffering from a heart attack the wave of support was simply incredible. And what was perhaps most surprising, given we’re constantly being told that religion and faith are of the past, is that everywhere the story was being reported, in the papers, on the radio and on the television, everyone was saying, ‘we’re praying for you.’

‘We’re praying for you.’ Those words were on the front pages of newspapers as well as

printed on players shirts. Suddenly, God wasn’t the dead and buried deity that people like Richard Dawkins writes about – God was very much alive and kicking, (no footballing pun intended!).

It’s very easy for people to say that religion has had its day, but that is simply not true. All Saints is full of worshippers every week and ours isn’t the only church in the country that wishes we could afford an extension. At times of great joy, but particularly when the chips are down, where is it, or more importantly, who is it that we turn to? As we saw through the Muamba incident – we turn to God.

The next time someone tells you that the church is out of date, or that Christians are barking mad or barking up the wrong tree, ask yourself a question. When you or a member of your family are in the thick of a hard time, when you’re worried sick or wrung out with grief, are you prepared to dismiss God? Or, do you do what I do, and what the footballers did, and what the fans and millions more around the globe do and have done for centuries? Do you open your heart and say, ‘God help me!’?

I suspect that there are thousands of people who wouldn’t sign up to any faith or denomination on paper, but who have spoken those words in prayer when they or a loved one needed help. If you’ve done that, then you’re one of those people with faith as small as a mustard seed. And from small seeds, mighty trees can grow. That’s why the Christian faith lives on, and why it will never ever die. Professor Dawkins, put that in your pipe and smoke it!

The Annual General Meeting was held on 3rd April Elections took place. Elected as Chair: Judy Turner; Vice Chair: Margaret Ingram; Treasurer: Sue Mann and Secretary Lynda Ridgway

Janet Flynn and Marilyn Knight after serving as Secretary and Treasurer for six years did not stand for re-election, they where presented with flowers from the members and thanked for their dedication and hard worked.

Report from A1 Housing Tenant Participation Officer The next edition of In Touch is out later. Jim drew TRA members’ attention to an article in the edition of In Touch which was written by Bernard Coleman Managing Director which set out changes under the localism act and welfare reform bill which will have significant changes for tenants.

Town Council - Brian Letherland; informed members that Steve Bowman is waiting for authorisation from the District Council for permission to write parking tickets. There is still no action regarding the dog warden.

Member: Jane Vernon reported that the street lighting in the vicinity of Cumberland House has now been resolved thanks to the help from Steve Bowman of the Town Council. Members are still concerned about cars parking on the paving blocks in front of the shops.

The next meeting of the group will take place on Tuesday 1 May 2012, starting at 10.30 am, at the Devonshire Road Community Centre. Everyone is welcome to come along, help us to make Harworth/Bircotes an even better place to live, and maybe make new friends and learn some new facts in the process. Refreshments are available and a raffle will usually take place. We would particularly welcome anyone from an ethnic minority, or younger people with fresh new ideas. – So please come and join us.

M ayflower Animal Sanctuary Where does the time go, I cant believe we are heading into May already together with the lovely sunshine and the freezing wind and snow. There can only be this country with such a diversity of weather.

As a Sanctuary we have had our best 2 months for adoptions so we must be doing something right. Our kennels are still full, as the waiting list doesn't seem to go down. In reality we don't mind because it is far better for dogs and cats to be with us than stay in homes that are struggling for one reason or another to keep their pets. We must also remember that there are lots of people through no fault of their own need to re home their much loved pets. We will always be there to help and advise.

Their are still the usual problems regarding dogs being found with no owner in sight and no one claiming them, also dog stealing is still rife so please be careful and do not tie your much loved pet outside shops even though you will only be minutes purchasing a newspaper. We have had so many upset people calling us as their dogs have disappeared that way. There are also people out there that would wait for a reward to go up before you got your pet back. So please make sure you do not leave your dog unattended and it is chipped at least if it is lost you will be reunited with your pet almost immediately.

Don't forget we are getting into kitten season and check out neutering costs with your local vet, lots seem to have offers on at the moment.

I would like to say a big thank you to everyone that brought me towels and bedding throughout the winter months it has been such a great help keeping our residents warm and dry.

Also a big thank you to everyone that has collection boxes in their shops and particularly to Diane in Tickhill who gave us a huge bottle of whisky but something far more important than whisky was in it. It was full of money thank you so much.

Mayflower Sanctuary is currently looking for a Kennel Supervisor.

Mayflower Sanctuary is a Rescue Centre that has been established since 2003. Its main aim is to rescue and rehome abused and abandoned dogs and cats.

Based at Bawtry, Doncaster you would report to the Sanctuary Manager and will be responsible for the day to day supervision of stall, trainees and volunteers. It will also be your sole responsibility to ensure that the Sanctuary is adequately staffed each day and to Manage the cleaning of the kennels, ensuring that everyone is adhering to procedures put in place by the Sanctuary.

Experience with Animals also Managing or supervising a team is essential.

The role is Full time (37.5 hours ) It requires the candidate to work 5 days, one of these being either a Saturday or Sunday.

Dear All, Recently as I looked out of the window I saw snow falling in a rapid flurry mixed in with an unwelcoming rain which told me I ought to stay indoors – although I had to brave the elements before the morning had surrendered to the afternoon.

Who would have believed this possible earlier when the sun smiled down upon us every day, when those who worked in schools or offices felt that they were working in greenhouses, and when all the talk was of an early summer? Who would have expected it? Of course, in many ways that’s why we love the Great British weather – it always gives us something to talk about – we never know what to expect!

We have just passed through Easter. How many people expected the events of Good Friday when things looked so favourable on Palm Sunday? Who would have expected or even begun to have imagined the events of Easter Day when things looked so unfavourable on Good Friday?

Well our Heavenly Father wasn’t surprised of course, the Son knew what was coming and the Spirit was directing it all. The disciples shouldn’t have been surprised either as Jesus had been giving them a spiritual weather forecast for weeks - and yet they remain in shock and awe throughout!

I think I have come to expect the unexpected over the last year. Nothing that I either worried about or anticipated turned out the way I imagined. It has often been a big surprise to me – but I’ve come to realise afresh that none of it has been a surprise to our Heavenly Father. I should trust more.

Then I smile to think of the number of times Christians pray about things and then they are amazed when they are answered as if to say, “Well that’s the last thing I expected!” Easter is behind us now – I wonder if it turned out as you were expecting. As we look to the future may we learn to expect the unexpected and trust in a god for whom nothing is a surprise.

Neighbourhood Policing Team in partnership with Town Council have secured approximately 100 shed alarms which can be purchased from the Harworth and Bircotes Town council. The Helping Hands Award Scheme (Helping Hands Award is a registered Charity) encourages schools and their pupils to interact with the wider community and community organisations and agencies. As part of the scheme the local Neighbourhood Policing Team have been working with youngsters at All Saints School who have decided they want to have a "helping hand" in reducing speeding and parking outside their school. On 21st March and 29th March pupils joined PC James Martin, PCSO Kendra Jacob and PSCO Colin Haywood, from the Harworth Beat Team, to monitor the speed of passing motorists. Armed with a handheld speed gun, PC Martin was able to monitor how fast vehicles were travelling and anyone caught flouting the limit was asked to pull over. The children were then able to ask the driver a series of questions. A total of 388 vehicles passed the group where a total of 13 vehicles were stopped for driving above the 30mph speed limit. PC James Martin said: "The pupils highlighted speeding outside their school as a primary concern so we have been working closely with them about road safety and the implications of driving too fast. "They are also taking the messages they're learning as part of the initiative to their family and friends to help raise awareness and change the actions and attitudes of others. "The drivers that were stopped were very receptive and took time to answer questions from the pupils and listen to their concerns. Just having a presence outside the school made motorists think twice about how fast they were travelling and the potential consequences of speeding." Officers will continue to work with the school as part of the project for the next 2 months. At the end of the scheme the pupils will hand in a portfolio of work to a panel of judges at the Helping Hands Charity, with the chance of winning up to £1,000 for their school in recognition of their achievements. POLICE REQUEST ASSISTANCE FROM THE PUBLIC The Neighbourhood Policing Team is working closely with the local community to highlight the importance of witnesses giving statements to support prosecutions. Without these statements the police and CPS are restricted and in many cases unable to prosecute without witnesses’ co-operation. There has been a recent incident reported to the Police where a member of the public witnessed a person driving a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol. Unfortunately as the Police had not witnessed the person driving they were unable to prosecute the driver, this was witnessed by the person ringing the police who was unwilling to give a statement.

ARRESTS/PROSECUTIONS OF NOTE A Male who was arrested recently for vehicle crime in the area has been sentenced to 10 Months Imprisonment when he attended court in March 2012.

A Harworth female has been found guilty of possession with intent to supply class A drugs and received 2 years custodial sentence.

A Male from the Harworth area has been further bailed for 3 months for the Crown Prosecution Service to assess the evidence in relation to the male being involved in Possession with Intent to supply Class A drugs in the Harworth and Bircotes area. SAFER NEIGHBOURHOOD GROUP From the Recent Safer neighborhood Meeting held on January 25th 2012 the three local priorities have been identified from feedback received from the community by the priority survey forms regarding issues of greatest concern and issues the public wanted the safer Neighborhood Team to tackle. A re you a Carer? There are an estimated half a million carers of people diagnosed with a life limiting illness at any one time, these are ordinary people caring for someone who has become ill and whose illness is progressive and may not be curable. However, though many thousands of people become carers each year, many do not recognize their role and

their new title, they are not aware that they are now a carer. Surprisingly too, professional care providers do not always acknowledge that family members or friends are carers, and that they too have needs and require support to enable them to carry out their new role. Anyone can become a carer; carers come from all walks of life, all cultures and can be of any age. Many feel they are doing what anyone else would in the same situation; looking after their mother, son, or best friend and just getting on with it. They don’t choose to become carers: it just happens and they have to get on with it; if they did not do it, who would and what would happen to the person they care for? A carer spends a significant proportion of their life providing unpaid support to family or friends. In total, there are an estimated six million carers in the UK, including more than 170,000 who are under the age of 18. Nearly a third of carers are caring for more than 50 hours or more each week Carers experience many different caring situations. A carer could be someone looking after a new baby with a disability or caring for an elderly parent, someone supporting a partner with a substance misuse or mental health problem. Despite these differing caring roles, all carers share some basic needs. Carers may suffer ill-health due to their caring role. To care safely and maintain their own physical and mental health and well-being, carers need information, support, respect and recognition from the professionals with whom they are in contact. Improved support for the person being cared for can make the role of the carer more manageable. It is important that carers take care of themselves– this can be positive both physically and emotionally for themselves but also for the person being taken care of. However, all too often carers can be so preoccupied with the health and well-being of the person they are caring for, that their own needs take a back seat.

Carers are the largest source of care and support in each area of the UK. It is in everyone’s interest that they are supported. With an ageing population, the UK will need more care from families and friends in the future. This is an issue that will touch everyone’s life at some point. Carer support concerns everyone. Support for carers is widely available across Bassetlaw in many forms both NHS and through local and national charities. Bassetlaw Health Partnership (until recently Bassetlaw PCT) offers carer support from all its clinical teams, in particular: Bassetlaw Hospice, Macmillan Nurses, Community Nursing Team, Community Matrons, Specialist Care Support Team, Rapid Response and Out of Hours service. If you are a carer and are supported by any of the above teams, ask how they may be able to help you in your role as a carer. Carer Assessments are also available to those caring for someone with cancer or a long term condition. The assessment consists of questions on the impact on your life of caring for someone. It can reveal to you how your life is affected by caring and what can be done to support you. It is also an opportunity to express your thoughts and fears.

On completion of the assessment, we are then able to: Offer advice, support and practical help, discuss the possibility of respite, sign post to other voluntary and support services, refer for financial advice and discuss any concerns about future needs.

You will have the opportunity to meet other carers and professionals for advice and support, or just a chat. We are able to offer the service of experienced Health Care Support Workers to support the person you are caring for while you attend.

Take care of your car—before a thief does! Every time you park your car or van, even just for a few minutes, you are leaving a potential present for a thief.

If you know who is committing crime in your area, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, and you may be able to claim a cash reward.

But, with a little thought, vehicle crime is one of the easiest crimes to prevent. Remember: Thieves don’t break into a car for a look round. They break in because they can see something to steal. You wouldn’t leave £100 in cash on the dash board and expect it to be there when you return, but people regularly leave their satnav on the dashboard. Just the ring left on the windscreen by the mounting device is enough to tell a thief a satnav may be in the vehicle.

Never leave anything on view that might be attractive to a thief. Mobile phones, credit cards, loose change, sunglasses, cameras, a handbag or sports bag – they are just what a thief is looking for. And NEVER leave tools in the back of your van overnight.

Thieves are opportunists and are not put off by the fact that the vehicle may be alarmed – they will smash the window, grab what they want and run. So, if you leave it on show, expect it to go. And you don’t just lose your belongings - you also have to pay for any damage the thief does to your vehicle.

If you really must leave valuables in your vehicle, lock them in the boot, but my advice would be to take them with you EVERY TIME you leave it.

Think about where you park your vehicle. At home, put it in the garage or at least on the drive. It’s much safer than on the road. When you are out and about look for a Park Mark approved car park. They are well lit, regularly patrolled and covered by CCTV. If you have to leave your car by the roadside try to find somewhere that is well lit. It might be broad daylight when you leave it but it could be pitch dark by the time you return – just what a thief likes.

Modern cars are difficult to steal without the keys so don’t leave them lying around – or they, and your car, could be missing when you next look for them.

Never leave them on the hall table, a kitchen worktop, or hanging on the wall. Thieves have ways of reaching through your letterbox to grab your keys – and steal your car. Keep your doors locked. Don’t let a thief walk in and walk off with your car keys

At night, it’s a good idea to take your car keys to bed with you.

Finally invest a few pounds in a highly visible deterrent like a steering wheel lock – it makes your car even more difficult to steal.

These are simple precautions, but if everyone followed them vehicle crime would be cut dramatically

Thank you to everyone who attended the Daniel Smith Blues Band function held on Friday the 20th of April 2012 at the Town Hall Over 100 people attended and £300 was raised for Charity.

DOG FOULING ON FOOTPATHS/SPORTS PITCHES & PUBLIC AREAS. I would like to thank residents for the letters of support following the warnings which were printed in last months H&B's Today. In particular the comments relating to irresponsible dog owners who allow their dogs to foul on football pitches and play facilities to the detriment of the young people of Harworth and Bircotes.

I understand that the Management of the Sports Facilities on Scrooby Road are shortly to circulate a letter asking dog owners not to allow their dogs to foul on football pitches. There are dog bins located on the sports fields so there really is no excuse and it has been confirmed that No permission has been granted by the management so that fixed penalty notices can be issued to offenders resulting in a fine of £50.00 for a first offence and up to a £1000 fine for a second offence if the matter is referred to the Courts.

ERECTION OF PLANTERS ON SCROOBY ROAD. You will have seen the new large planters erected on the shop fronts opposite the Town Council Information Centre on Scrooby Road.

Shortly they will be planted up with bedding plants and hanging baskets. This work has been completed at NO cost to the people of H&B's as funding was obtained from HM Govt. (Connecting Communities) to help improve the look of YOUR Town. This is an ongoing project to compliment the planters located at the top of Droversdale Road and Waterslack Road and elsewhere in the Town.

Bawtry, Tickhill, Maltby and Doncaster all have had lovely gardened areas and hanging baskets for years so why shouldn't you have them as well? You are worth it!

GRASS CUTTING. I am delighted that Mr Walt Pearson (Town Council Handyman) has started to cut the verges around Harworth and Bircotes under an agency agreement with Nottinghamshire County Council to the benefit of the Town.

DISPOSAL OF GRASS CUTTINGS/GARDEN WASTE. I would like to remind residents that dumping your household waste/garden waste (including grass cuttings) on public land, without having the owners consent, is an offence under the Environment Act. The offence is called FLY TIPPING and if convicted the courts can impose a custodial sentence (ie prison!) there is NO fixed penalty for this offence.

Please dispose of your rubbish using the bins provided and lets keep H&B's as tidy as we can for the benefit of all.

Please do report anyone fly tipping to the Environmental Health Dept on 01909 533533 (this can be done anonymously!) and action will be taken against offenders.

ILLEGAL DUMPING – SNIPE PARK WOOD/DROVERSDALE WOOD/SPACES OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. It has been reported that some residents are dumping household rubbish and garden waste on areas such as Snipe Park Wood, Droversdale Wood and even public footpaths in and around the Town.

Offenders are warned that such acts are contrary to the Environmental Protection Act 1990 Section 89 and individuals caught could be fined £80.00 (fixed penalty notice) and a second offence up to £2500 following a court appearance.

Anyone witnessing someone dumping rubbish should report the details to Bassetlaw District Council (Environmental Health) on 01909 533533 (this may be done anonymously).

Bircotes Library – What’s on in May

From Monday 14th May until 11th June we will have an exhibition of Bircotes/Harworth during the past 60 years. This will include photographs of the village commemorating the Coronation, Silver Jubilee and Royal Weddings.

Please feel free to come and view. If you have any photographs you wish to share with us, we will be only too happy to return them when the exhibition is finished.

For the children on 8th and 9th June 10.00 – 12.00, celebrate the Diamond Jubilee by mak-ing your own royal crown.

Do you Care for someone ? Two Carers Events are being held in Bassetlaw to publicise services and support that are available for people who look after someone else. It is estimated that 10% of people help with the care of a family member, friend or relative. These events aim to tell people about the range of practical, emotional, and financial support that they can access, as well as giving local information and advice.

The Events are on Thursday 31 May at The Well Church, Hospital Road, Retford, and on Wednesday 20 June at The Crossing Church, Newcastle Street, Worksop. They both comprise a drop- in exhibition from 1.00 to 3.00, and some talks from 1.30-2.15.
