HATS OFF GREENVILLE
Spring Luncheon and Fashion Event for Stop Hunger Now
A Note From Virginia Crews, Great Day of Ser-vice Coordinator
We packaged 285,120 meals with roughly 1100 volunteers from all over the district.
Raised $71,280 needed for the packaging on April 19.
We raised an extra $3000 plus for the Annual Con-ference event on June 11 in Florence.
We have been asked as a district to raise $6000 to-ward the event, St Mat-thew's Hats Off event will hopefully make up the difference and then some.
We also sent non perisha-bles to Sharon UMC and the James Monroe House (Trinity Fountain Inn) for the hunger ministries happening in their con-gregations. Connecting together to transform our slice of the world.
Mary’s Message
What a day! Thank you to all
of you who made our Great
Day of Service – STOP
Hunger Now a success!
There are so very many
pieces of the puzzle that
have to line up just right…
from fundraising to clean up
and everything in between.
The coordination of all
aspects of the day was
perfect. The set-up crew
prepared everything on
Friday. The hospitality and
parking staffs were in place
by 6:00 am. The scoopers,
runners, weighers, sealers,
counters, packers and
loaders moved like
clockwork. In all, over
285,000 meals were packed
and are on their way to
Liberia.
Perhaps the best part of the
day was seeing how folks
from all over the District
worked side by side toward a
common goal. It truly was a
visible expression of our
connectional life together.
Over and over I heard people
comment how we need more
opportunities to get to know
each other and to work
toward something significant
for the Kingdom. We will
certainly take that to heart!
Now that we have held
our district event, we can
begin to concentrate on
the Annual Conference
Great Day of Service –
STOP Hunger Now to be
held on Tuesday, June 11
at the Florence Coliseum.
We need to raise $6,000
from our District, and you
can contribute through
your church on online at
www.umcsc.org. We also
need folks to volunteer to do
the same things we did here
in Greenville. We especially
want youth groups to sign up
to work the final shift.
Following the completion of
packing, the youth will enjoy
a pizza supper and the
Conference will hold a special
worship service geared
toward our young people that
evening. I hope to see lots
of our Greenville folks there!
Thank you again for all you
are doing in the name of
Jesus Christ for the sake of
the Kingdom in your places
of ministry and service.
Grace and Peace,
Mary V. Teasley
CONFERENCE ON MINISTRIES WITH CHILDREN
From Tuesday, July 23 – Fri-day, July 26, Greenville will be host to over 200 United Methodists from across the country for the Conference on Ministries with Children, sponsored by the General Board of Discipleship. This is a great opportunity to learn from the best about ministry for, with, and by the chil-dren in our churches and communities. If you have not registered, it’s not too late. Go to www.gbod.org/children from more infor-mation.
We need your help in sev-eral ways. We need folks to help with registration, help-ing conference participants find the wonderful amenities that Greenville has to offer, and general ‘gopher’ duties. Contact Cathy Joens if you are willing to help out.
We need BANNERS…lots of banners!... for the closing worship service processional on Friday. The theme for the conference is MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE TO THE LORD, so we need banners that are expressions of that idea. We would love for each church in the district to be represented.
In the coming weeks we will be in touch about more ways you can help us make this event a success.

A Message from Our Lay Leader
A message from Michael Cheatham, District Lay Leader
April 13 - a great day to be a United Methodist! On that day, nearly 1,200 volunteers gathered at Advent United Methodist Church for a Great Day of Service. Responding to the inspiration and enthusiasm of our district youth for a second year, we held a packaging event for Stop Hunger Now. We have now packaged over 620,000 meals. Our efforts have also inspired other districts in our conference to embrace Stop Hunger Now as a mission. In June during Annual Conference, delegates will have an opportunity to participate in a packaging event on Tuesday. Volunteers, in addition to delegates, are invited to Florence to participate in this event. Youth groups are invited to join during the final shift and to worship together on Tuesday evening.
Events in recent days remind us that we need to turn to God more than ever. Tragedies in Boston and West, Texas have shown us the uncertainties of our lives. We have seen pictures of people rushing into the field of danger, disregarding their own safety, to help others. No greater love can be expressed than to ignore
one’s own safety for others.
God presents us with opportunities everyday to express our faith. As disciples of Jesus Christ, we have the responsibility to demonstrate his love in the way we live. Our lives are a journey. The destination has been promised. The route we travel has been left for us to choose. As we have seen, even in tragedy and chaos, God is present. To God be the glory!
Send Us your information about VBS and we will list it. Churches may be able to share materials and supplies and decorations.

Salkehatchie Summer Service is almost here. This July, the Upstate
Camp located at Lee Road United Methodist Church, will be hosting
about 60 campers, and working on four homes in the Greer – Taylor’s

camps? Have you ever wished to volunteer for one day, or one/half
day? Can you fix a meal for these campers? The Upstate Camp lead-
ership is in the planning stages now, and needs help from everyone.
If you and your group could help in anyway, please contact Steve
