    HEAD BOY 2020

    DEPUTIES 2020

Gabriel Bush William O’Sullivan Kaelin Nguyen

    Kia ora Koutou,

We have had a wonderful year and I am sad to see it finished. As a staff we have a week or so of meetings – tidying up loose ends from this

year as well as continuing our planning and preparation for 2020 but the boys are gone and the place is empty without them.

I commented at our junior prize-giving that “Love of God” can be easy in our school if you understand that choosing to be thankful is one way

of expressing this. Being thankful for the teachers and support staff who care about our boys and often go well beyond “the Collective

Agreement” in terms of the time and effort they put into the everyday things here. Being thankful for the Nicola-s in the office who are

patient and always ready to help – particularly if someone is feeling ill or lost. Being thankful for the millions of dollars in new building work

that is going on that will see our school looking modern and ‘fit for purpose’. Being thankful for all of the parents and whanau who often go

out of their way to get involved and support their sons. Being thankful for the way the overwhelming majority of the boys this year have been

positive and co-operative and generally have made working with them a pleasure. Finally being thankful that 342 out of 374 of our junior

boys averaged an engagement grade of 2 or better for the year. That means that, according to that measure, the overwhelming number of our

boys ‘engage in learning in a positive manner’. I am thankful!

We farewell three staff members at the end of this year. Mr Brenten Higson retires from teaching after over 30 years in the profession and 17

years at our College. His dedication and time commitment to the boys of this College is legendary. Mr Phillip Carew and Mr Arif Ahmed are

also moving on from St Bernard’s College. We thank all of them for their service to the boys and wish them well for their futures. We

congratulate Mr Luka Andic on his appointment as our new Head of Sciences and welcome Mr Matt Bayliss (Science) and Mr Colin Frude

(Economics) to the staff in 2020.

We wish you and your family peace and joy over this Christmas and we look forward to what 2020 brings. I have no doubt it will bring a lot to

    be thankful for.

MathematicsWe had a number of students enter the Maths Reach(formally ICAS) assessment this year. A number of students performed particularly well.

The following boys achieved in the top 35% of all participants:

Lastly one boy was in the top 1% of all participants. This was an outstanding result for a young man who is only in Year 8.

On a windy day in Wellington 9HU and 9BN headed out to Pauatahanui Inlet to survey the land and do some science. Our mission was set by Mr

Higson. We were to set up some transet lines and using quadrats we were expected to collect data on the organisms living at the estuary. He

also made it clear that we had to have fun. A few boys had to run quickly after a surprise breeze captured their booklets and pulled them

towards the sea. We spent the day counting things and digging for crabs. At the end, we ate our lunch in the sun.

  • Donations Scheme Funding Policy

The Government announced in their Budget 2019 a new policy to provide decile 1-7 state and state-integrated schools the option to opt in

to receive $150.00 per student, per year as long as the school agreed not to ask parents and caregivers for donations.

The SBC Board of Trustees have had a number of meetings to consider the impact on our College Finances if the College were to opt into

this scheme. The Board is concerned that the College would not be able to continue to offer the range of opportunities it currently offers

if it were to opt into the scheme. Education opportunities such as ‘Education Outside the Classroom’ would need to be significantly

limited as the rules around the donation scheme do not allow the College to even ask for donations to cover expenses such as bus fares to

take part in these activities. Currently the College is able to support some students who cannot cover these costs however the impact of

the donation scheme would likely be that many of these events would be unable to happen for anyone.

The St. Bernard’s Board is seeking further advice and analysis on the charges that it requests annually titled Curriculum Costs and

Donations. The current government offer would not cover the curriculum costs as they are now. The Board Budget 2020 review needs to

assess the donation collected on behalf of the Marist Community Development Trust (MCDT). It is uncertain how this resource received

from the MCDT, being used by the College to fund special character activities, some building improvements and hardship situations is to

be classified in the new Donations Scheme Funding Policy.

The budget analysis will confirm the classification of the donations and charges requested and received by SBC and the likely financial

impact to the curriculum of SBC.

The College Board will reassess, during 2020, the opportunity to opt in for Budget 2021 to the Donations Scheme Funding. The result of

the Curriculum charges review will assist the Board in its decision including feedback from parents and caregivers of College students.

The not to opt in for 2020 does not exclude St. Bernard’s College from opting in for Budget 2021 or any subsequent budget years. A

decision to opt in for 2021 will be advised by the Ministry of Education in late 2020 for schools to confirm joining, continuing or leaving

    the scheme.

Thanks to all the football and futsal players who have donned the blue and gold jersey and played

with REAL PRIDE AND PASSION. Thanks to the hundreds of parents who have supported their sons

through the pains of defeat and the glories of victory. You were there when your son needed

consoling and there when they needed to be congratulated. Thanks for transporting not just your

sons to games but also others. To the players keep being involved in the ”glorious game”.

Congratulations to our Junior touch teams (1st Division 1 & 2nd Division 2) Congratulations to our Junior tennis team (Ieti Ah Young and Sean

  • Farewell Brenten Higson

    Heart felt gratitude.

To the St Bernard’s College community I thank you sincerely for the tremendous support and love that you have given to me over the past 16

years in my capacity as a science teacher.

Thank you for allowing your sons, grandsons, and friends to be taught science and to hopefully develop a lifelong fascination for the wonders

of science that is around and in us. Thank you for the thousands of yoghurt containers, the hundreds of glass containers, the donation of

books and magazines, the many film canisters, fish tanks and much more.

My thanks to the teachers of Sts Peter and Paul, Sacred Heart and Our Lady of the Rosary schools for giving us the opportunity to take

    science to your classes.

Thank you to GNS and Dr Karyn Rogers for opening up their doors and allowing us to experience the world of a career scientist. Thanks to the

many teachers that have been my colleagues and instilled a love of science in their students.

A very special thanks to the students who have enjoyed science, worked hard and as they have become seniors and achieved academic

success. You have made science teaching inspiring for me.

  • Arts – Off the Planet Festival

This year’s Junior Production was envisioned by our Year 7 and 8 students. ‘Off the Planet’ involved students creating and producing music and art works, devising drama and choreographing their own dance routine under the watchful eyes of facilitators, our courageous and creative Art Teaching team. While it incorporates artistic endeavours, it is actually key competencies that make it happen; students participating and contributing whenever they can in their chosen artistic field, students managing themselves and thinking to solve the issues that arise in their planning and preparations, students relating to others as leaders, support crew and fellow performers to encourage the energy, enthusiasm and joy that is finally most evident on festival day.

The weather was slightly suss for the event but the rain stayed away and the wind was ok. The barbeque behaved itself and many a sausage was consumed beneath all that tomato sauce. Students enjoyed relaxing together between the final rehearsal and ultimate performance to watch a movie, continue with final preparatory details or play together outside.

It was wonderful to see so many families come to see their sons perform. Whilst there were nerves aplenty, support and encouragement were evident for the boys and the courage they displayed throughout rehearsals and performance. The dance routine was epic and so obviously a top team effort. The drama was focussed and confident in its determined performances of some emotive and dramatic content, all student devised. The music groups were solid in performance with whole classes proudly presenting music they had learned and composed throughout the year. The art works were a treat too and demonstrated a range of artistic techniques and creations.

In 3 years, this festival has become locked into our calendar. Older students remember the event and remind us ‘how cool it was’ (though they don’t say cool anymore!) and they sing me excerpts of songs from years gone by. While the current Countdown Supermarket advertisement may torment me this summer, my own memory of the day is fond and pleasing. Congratulations to all involved, student and teacher! You can all be very proud!

  • Year 8 Camp

On Monday 4th of November, all of year 8 attended our EOTC Outdoor camp experience. This was held at Kaitoke YHA.

We boarded buses at 9am and started our journey. All of us were hoping we didn’t forget something from our gear list. When we arrived at

Kaitoke we were straight into our program of activities. We were all in different groups for the week and each group had an instructor and a

parent or teacher working with us for the week.

Our groups participated in activities such as, Kayaking, Rock climbing, Archery, Tramping, Overnight tenting, outdoor cooking, Tree top high

ropes, Giant Swing, Superfox and some others I may have forgotten.

Our groups were also responsible for meal time duties. This actually ended up being quite fun working together to get the jobs done.

On The last night of Camp the year 13 leaders came up and talked to us about their journey through St Bernard’s College and what we needed

to focus on moving into year 9.

We all had an amazing time and it was definitely a highlight of our time at SBC in 2019.

We would like to thank the parents who gave up their time to come and support us; Mark Tainui, Mark McGuinness, Chris Campbell, Rory

Durno, Neil Watkins and Francee Pilcher.

We would also like to thank Mr Clarke, Mr Cooper and Mr Sutherland for spending the week with us and all the other teachers who came up

    and spent time with us.

It was an awesome experience and this will be something to look forward to in 2020 for all of you year 7s.
