LAST WEEK'S HIGHLIGHTS

THIRD TERM BURSTS WIN FOROR O ® , ST. B ER NAR®`S

DE LA SALLE PRESSED BY COBUR GBy GEORGE McTAGGART

Ormond and St. Bernard's can thank their third quarter bursts for carry-ing them to victory over University Blacks and Caulfield Grammarians respec-tively in the main games of last Saturday's round .

Each kicked eight goals in this term after trailing at the interval .Coburg put up their best performance for the season in pressing De La

Salle to nine points.

High scoring was again a feature of the round with 45 teams topping thecentury, six of them being losers.

The Blacks had the edge on Orm- tion Grand Final was a thriller, withond in the first half although they Old Xaverians beating AJAX by 2ed by only five points at half-time. points. Old Carey opened their ac-

PREVIEiIV112"IGTODAY'S GAIMNIE S

A SECTIO NOrmond and Marcellin clash in the "match

of the day' 'at Elsternwick Park today . ina game that promises to be as good a con-test as we have seen this year.

Power and Gartner have been in fine formfor Marcellin while Naylor is !giving Orm-ond ~areat drive from the centre bounce .Marcellin have some brilliant players but ,theside then tends to taper off.

It's a toss ;up :but I fancy Ormond bya hand-full of points .

Wooden-spoon "honours" are at stakewhen the lowly Old Trinity and Coburgmeet at Richmond .

Both are team building but Trinity ap-pear the less 'depleted and should take thepoints .

North Old Boys look an excellent chancefor ,two flags in a+row and will maintaintheir ,unbeaten record in accounting forUniversity Blacks but 'Blacks boast consid-erable talent and if North don't .get on topearly there could be a surprise .

Caulfield Grammarians are still in sightof the four and will not be troubled byUniversity 'Blues who have disappointed tod&•te .

Mike Sleeman and Simon Trumble arerelied on too heavily out at the 'Varsity andtheir influence will not be sufficient tocounter a determined Caulfield who willbe smarting from last weeks lapse .

A poser with St . Bernard's and De LaSalle . A 'spasmodically brilliant St. Bern-ard's on Paper should win well . But DeLa Salle are a most even line-up with fewstars and every player doing his share . Theyhowever, do not appear to be playing aswell as last year . I will not too confid-ently stick with St. Bernard's but I expectlittle in it at the final siren .

SELECTIONS : Ormond, North Old Boys,Old Trinity, Caulfield Grammarians, St .Bernards - JIM FIDGE .

B SECTIO NIt was good to see Collegians break the

ice, thereby making a difficult job im,oos-sible .

Flushed with success, Old Melburniansmeet Reservoir O .B ., and will know theyhave played a game of football. Howeverthey should have too much aerial abilityfor Reservoir, whose main avenue to goalappears to be :Ray Shepherd and Tom Byrnein the roving diin sion .

Geelong put a very ordinary effortlast week and do not ~inspire much confid-ence for their clash with Monash Bluesfor whom Chris Moore is really firing ~onthe forward line.

Old Scotch, with captain John Andersonback in form, look to be too Powerful forthe improving Collegians, however the Car-

dinals will need to keep :their minds onthe job to notch the four points .

St. Kilda C .B .C . and Old Haileyburians, both last round losers, look fairly evenlymatched for their clash at North Rd . Halley-bury icould well control the marking duelsand sneak away with the tpoints .

Ivanhoe, where the Stewart brothers andCharlie Stredwick, appear to be carryingthe side week after week, do not appeu~,to have ,the even spread of strength andexperience so necessary to tackle Old Par-adlans with any real chance of ta win . TheOP's look sure to remain at the head ofthe list .

SELECTIONS: Old Melburnians, MonashBlues, Old Scotch, Old Haileyburians, OldParadians - ALF KEAM.

C SECTION

I'm writing these selections In a queueat Tullamarine - so here goes.

Good work Old Carey in opening up yourscore - if MHS could crack it we wouldsee some more interest in the lower halfof the ladder .

Glamour side Old Xav's - just fell inagainst AJAX - ;it was a+great contest. Atip from an old bloke Xav's - don't gettoo complacent with your wins as youhave some good -sides 'breathing down yourneck.

Today Old Xav's meet Carey at home andshould add another 4 points .

Parkside a final four prospect will finddifficulties with Kew's ground - but, onform should take out the game .

AJAX are a good side - although a losslast Saturday it was a great performanceand 1+tip them to improve even more . Athome to UHSOB I select them to will ,

Fawkner Playing well will be 'too strongfor MHSOB, I can't go past them for the4 points .

Old Ivanhoe and 'Hampton Rovers, onequal points, set me today's poser . Althoughat home, I think Old I's will find Hamptonin full flight and :they look the better side .

My Selections :- Parkside, Old Xaverlans,Hampton Rovers, AJAX, Fawkner.

I hope Graeme is doing the writing nextweek. - ALEX. JOHNSON.

D SECTIO N

Alphington won well last week and arenow clear leaders by two games followedby Old B ri ghton, State Bank, ~Camberwelland Assumption all struggling to stay inthe four. However some of the teams arenow settling down which gives some heartto a struggling tipster (four winners lastweek) - (That's more like the form of1976 Top Tipster - Ed.) .

Assumption meet Old Brighton at Brighton, although the home side did not performwell last week I still think that on theirhome ground they will be ~too strong forthe visitors .

Alphington will have no troubles in dis-posing of bottom of the ladder Power House .The same applies to Elsternwick when theymeet LaTrobe Blacks at LaTrobe.

Old Geelong have been a disappointmentso far this year a nd this week they will

i ake another ba ttering from Old Camberwell. The remaining match of the day will be

St. Kevin's against State Bank. St . Kevin'shave been up and down so far whereasS t ate Bank seem t o be settling down andconcentrating on the game - State Bankto Will .

SELECTIONS : tOld Brighton, Alphington,Elsternwick, Old Camberwell, State Bank -KEITH FINDLAY .

E SECTIO NOld Mentonians at home to North Bruns-

wick should be good enough but Northhave a habit of doing the unexpected, in-cluding me .

West Brunswick have another home matchagainst the oldest club in the section,Brunswick, their neighbors from `DunstanReserve, and should register a comfortablewin .

Heatherton are to entertain Beverley Hillsand the winner will be a place in fronton the ladder . I fancy the fallacy and there-fore select Heatherton .ANZ Bank and National Bank should pro-

vide a closer match than either side en-joyed last week. ANZ should win theirsecond game .

SELECTIONS :- Old Mentonians, WestBrunswick, Heatherton and ANZ Bank -SYD WHITFIELD .

F SECTIONOnce again performances last Saturday

served to further divide the ten sides onthe premiership ladder .

Commonwealth Bank and Bulleen-Temple-stowe play the main game today. Accordingto my •records the Bankers are enjoyingtheir best ~ season since 1969 when they wonC 'Section . Bulleen-Templestowe have notput :a foot wrong this season . The bigHarry Trott oval will allow them to developtheir play-on game, provided no local squallsblow Off 'the lake . I like Bulleen Temple-stowe despite the 'Banker's strength .

From the main game at Albert Park, thatat Prince's Park will see the bottom twosides struggling ;to avoid the wooden spoon .Glenroy have scored more than have Uni-versity Reds . Forwards win games so Iselect Glenroy .

Footscray I .T . smartin g from two succes-sive losses make the long journey southto Mentone . Awaiting them will be the dis-appointing footballers from St . Bede's .

Home ground advantage on the sandyBeda oval should assist St. iBede's . Howeveron their inconsistent performances to dateI can't see them defeating •the Footscrarystudents .

Thornbu ry will be all out to preserve theirclaim to second place when they meetMonash Whites who crashed last week .hornbury will be 'too strong and too talent-Td for the 'boys from the "Clayton Farm"and should have another big win.

Bulleen United will be anxious to main-tain their high rating when La Trobe Reds, flushed with success, are ;their opponentstoday . Apart from 'last week's success . I

La Trobe have little to recommend them .+Bulleen United's performances reveal astronger forward and back line than thoseof the visitors . United should have an easywin .

SELECTIONS:- Bulleen - Templestowe,Glenroy, Footscray I .T., Thornbury, BulleenUnited - NORM NUGENT.

JUNIOR SECTION IThe Coburg-Ivanhoe match is destined to

be a very one-sided affair as the Coburgboys obviously did not take heart intheir fine effort against Monash Universitytwo weeks ago and plummeted back to thedepths of despair against the inconsistentUniversity Blacks last week. If the Ivanhoeboys keep a level head and utilise theirvery good team play to its greatest extentthey will will by a huge score .

Monash University are tapering off a littleat this stage of the season and will notfind University Blacks an easy team toshrug off . Monash will win, but not by abig margin .

Even though they have only one win eachOld Scotch and Ormond should turn on areal thriller . Both have displayed real pro-mise at various stages of the season, inparticular Old Scotch . The Ormond boyswill have to work hard on their game tocounter Old Scotch's team work which is im-proving each week . :I think Old Scotch willwin .

Another difficult game to forecast an ac-curate result is this, 'one between NorthOld Boys and St . Bernard's . The greaterconsistency and application to :their gameby the 'North Boys will enable ~them to 'over-power 5t. Bernard's and register a com-fortable win .

SELECTIONS - 'Ivanhoe, Monash Univer-siiy, Old Scotch, North Old Boys - CLIFFBASTOW .

JUNIOR SECTION 2Success at last, and how sweet it is!!

However, now another week is upon usand your scribe must try to repeat the per-formance, with the most difficult roundof the season to date.

Undefeated Hampton Rovers play host tothe other undefeated side De La Salle . Thehome side have been showing brilliant form, while "De La" will be "raring to go" afterwinning on a forfeit last week . The high-light of the match should be both sidctendeavouring to get the ball to their ris-pective forwards in James and Stewart . Ihave quoted "De la" •as favourites for theflag and must sticd, with them .

Caulfield Grammarians are at home toGeelcng and both sides have won three andlost two This will be >a very close gameand my selection is Caulfield .

There is every possibility this could bethe week for Kew to 'break through againstM .H.S .O .B ., even though it is an awaygame for them . They put in a particularlygood performance against Reservoir lastweek . The spirit at High must be lowafter their forfeit last week, but I amsticking with them, probably because Alph-ington got up and won after a forfeit acouple of

West Brunswick visit Aiphington and sup-porters can expect to see a hard game, with West coming out on .top .Old Paradians 'suffered from bad kicking

last week and today visit Reservoir OldBoys. The Reservoir back line will not giveParadians as many opportunities as theyhad last week and will drive the ball for-ward often enough for their side to win .

SELECTIONS: De La Salle, Caulfield Gram-marians ~1VLIIS Old Boys, West Brunswick,Reservoir Old Boys - PETER NATHAN .

200 GAME S TO UNI HIGH "VETERAN"All players and officials would like to con-

gratulate Lee "Moose" Thomas on reaching200 games with Uni . High . Lee started withthe club in 1962, missing 2 years sincethen working in New Zealand, as an archi-tect . He has been a committeeman on num-erous occasions, had the privilege of bein g

awarded Best Clubman, and was awardedBest and Fairest player in the 2nd 18 lastyear . Lee also had the honour to be inUni Highs last permiership side in 1970 .His achievements have been deserved be-cause he is a very enthusiastic player andsupporter. So from all at Uni High, Leecongratulations for a job well done .

Caulfield Grammarians thanks go to C . A."Bill" Tootell for another of his generousdon&tions to the club, this time in the formof several lengths of slotted rods whichwhen assembled will help retrieve footballskicked into almost inaccessible positions inthe pine trees around our Home Ground No .3 Oval, Albert Park. "Bill" and brotherTom played for the club in the 'thirties, whilst Bill's three sons John and Tom bothover the 150 games mark and Greg now over200 games and still going strong have sincekept the family name well to the forein the V.A .F .A . competitions . What a re-cord and what a fine example of loyaltyand service as club members .

UMPIRE'S CORNERPLAY ON - A VALUE JUDGMENT

A field umpire having blown his whistl efor a free kick may elect to cancel suchfree kick by calling "play on" . This couldbe done if in his opinion, by enforcingsuch a free kick it would be to the dis-advantage of the team receiving the freekick .

The call "play on" must be loud, clearand decisive and may be accompaniedby a visual action of the umpires' arm orarms.

The decision to call play 'on ps more oftenthan not a difficult one for the field umpireto determine instantly, and consequentlythe umpire refrains from the call.

It is possible that if an umpire calls playon and the player receiving the 'benefitfalls or slips to ithd iground and subsequentlyloses possession of the ball, many playersand, followers of the game would considerperhaps that the umpire was wrong inpenalising the team for not allowing theplayer 'to go back and take Ithe originalfree kick . Such criticism of course wouldnot flow if the player gained an advantagefor his Iteam through the umpire calling"play on" .

The outcome 'of the result of an umpire'sgood intentions can bring ia negative resultto the team offended against .

Umpires are therefore at times verycautious in cancelling free kicks and •calling"play on" . If they knew for certain thatthe ~team offended against was -absolutelyand unequivocably sure of gaining an ad-vantage they would not hesitate to call "playon" .

The following situations do not generalypose a=problem for many umpires in deter-mining play ~on :

(a) When the ball having been kicked istouched in transit;

(b) When the ball is caught !without beingtouched from a kick and has travelled lessthan 10 metres ;

(c) When a player elects to play on aftertaking a mark ; and

(d) When a player having taken a markattempts to bring the ball into play byrunning, kicking or handballing the ball inany ~direction other than over his mark . Anyplayer who "faints" ia handpass or other-%vise makes an iarm movement to handballthe ball, other than in the direction of hismark, and ithen decides to withhold the ballis regarded as attempting to bring the (ballinto play .

Umpires are continually under the micro-scope of criticism and -in the majority of in-stances destructive criticism can result froman umpire making an instant decision whichin his opinion would be advantageous tothe team offended against . His best inten-tions can go astray through no fault ofhis .

Umpiring is =a reflex action and everydecision Must be done 'on the `spur of themoment' . The vast majority of his decisionsare correct and bring no comment or criti-cism.

Umpires are only human and this fact isoften forgotten .

GET GOAL-KICKERS RIGHTPress Correspondents are remind-

ed that Goal-kickers for the matchMUST be shown in order '- highestnumber of goals first, e.g. SMITH 5,ROBINSON 4, JONES 4,,CARTER 3,BROWN 2, McDONALD, MAXWELL,etc . - NOT -BROWN 2, MAXWELL1, ROBINSON 4, McDONALD 1,SMITH 5, CARTER 3, ROBINSON 4 .Which is similar to the list of goal-kickers submitted by one club thisweek. IT WAS NOT ACCEPTED.

It is essential also that CORRECTFORMS, (which were handed out justprior to the commencement of theseason), be used, not odd sized scrapsof paper .

100 GAMES TO OLD CAMBERWELLRUCKMA N

All at Old Camberwell would like to con-aratulae "Butch" McCallum on playing his100th game this week against Old Geelong .Butch has been associated with the clubfor many years and has established him-self as one of -the best ruckmen ever to donthe Old Camberwell colours . Much of oursuccess last year was directly attributableto his great work in the ruck and alongwith his •uncanny ability to lurk in the for-ward pocket and kick several goals perweek, this has made him the great playerhe is today . This season Butch has foundit extremely difficult to find the time toplay but much to our relief and joy he nowseems, at east to a degree to have over-come this problem . Congratulations Butchand we sincerely hope to see many moregames from you in the future.

After beginning as a dashing half-back flanker his dash has recently been uti-lised in the ruck and the Bank has beenmuch the richer for the move . The dashthat he does have, we think, can be attri-buted to his constant diet of 'Big Mac's' .

Thornbury members would like to offerRobert "Jezza" Bradbury their congratula-tions on his celebrating his 50th game lastSaturday. His consistency and dedicationat training has ensured his regular selectionin the team. Once again we say, well doneJezza, may you play on to your 100th game.
