Lake County Haven provides food, safety, shelter, counseling and life-skills training to women and children who are trying to find a path out of homelessness. Each and every day, our residents work to rebuild their lives. For many, it is a constant, uphill struggle. Here is...One Woman’s Journey.

A Bump in the Road

Jennifer hails from the South. She comes from a large family that was never short on love but she often struggled to figure out her place in the world. So, after high school, she put herself through college and set off on her own at the age of 21. When she was 25, Jennifer welcomed her daughter, Kaitlin, into the world. Being a single mother wasn’t always easy, but they were happy and always managed to make ends meet. In 2009, Jennifer was offered a job here in Lake County. Excited by this chance to branch out, the pair left behind everything they knew and set out for Illinois. Things were good. Jennifer worked a well-paying government job and she and Kaitlin lived happily in their own place for about 6 years. But in 2014, due to cutbacks, Jennifer lost her job. She

was able to find work pretty quickly, but earning $22,000 per year just wasn’t going to be enough for the two of them to live on — especially with Jennifer still paying off her student loans. Within two years, they lost their home. This is when they found the Haven.

Stopping for Directions

Jennifer and Kaitlin came to the Haven after two years of constant struggle and worry. Kaitlin was in the middle of her senior year in high school, unsure of whether she would even get to gradu-ate. Upon arriving here at the Haven, they (and we) got to work right away. Jennifer updated her cover letter and resume and got started on her job search. Kaitlin got squared away at school and felt much more focused having a fixed place to come home to. Their hard work paid off. Jennifer got a job and is focusing on building up a

savings. Kaitlin graduated high school and got a part-time job.

The Path Ahead

The path ahead is bright. Jennifer and Kaitlin have grown closer as a family while living here at the Haven, but they have also grown as individuals. Jennifer is preparing to move into an apartment of her own and looking forward to simply moving forward with her life. Meanwhile, Kaitlin will be starting college in the fall! She is also studying to get her driver’s license before she leaves for school. We’re so proud of the strides these women have made and look forward to seeing what their futures hold.

Adopt a Night!

Thank you to all of our friends and neighbors who have helped the homeless women and children in our community find a place to call “home” this past year. Because of your generosity, each of them received not only the basic necessities of life, but also:

• Case Management and Life-Skills Training to help them learn the skills they need to live independently.

• Counseling and support to help them heal from the trauma they experienced while living on the streets.

If you’ve adopted a night at the Lake County Haven, then you know how powerful just that one night can be! So much is accomplished each and every day at the Haven, and by adopting a night, YOU are the sponsor of that change. Here are just a few of the ways our Adopt-a-Night Sponsors have helped change the lives of Haven residents:

• A child walks (or rather, runs) for the first time!

• Haven residents work together practicing mock interviews.

• A new resident has a place to call home after 4 months of living on the streets.

• A woman reunites with her daughter and grandchild.

• Haven residents learn how to create a household budget.

• A young Haven resident gets her first full time job!
