The House that DisappearedHaverfordwest has been established as a town since the early medieval period and has many buildings to display its heritage. Look on the horizon as you approach Haverfordwest from the A40 and you see the Castle, standing proudly in the distance. If you drive into the town then you will discover a full array of period buildings ranging from the Augustinian Priory sitting on the banks of the Old Quay and the Victorian Workhouse placed on the top of Union Hill.

But, there is one building missing from this landscape. A small medieval merchant’s house once stood in Quay Street. An example of a sixteenth century tower stone house, the merchant’s house had a stone-vaulted, fi reproof, ground fl oor store room, complete with living accommodation above accessed by an outside staircase.

Overtime the building fell into a state of disrepair and was taken down stone by stone in 1983 by four young

apprentices who had recognised the buildings potential as a historical relic and that it was in dire need of rescuing. For the next 30 years, the merchant’s house remained in the hands of the apprentices until they found a new home for it at St Fagans: Welsh National History Museum in Cardiff .

In St Fagans, the same apprentices who had taken it down in 1983, resurrected the merchant’s house to restore it to its original glory. Rebuilding the house was a complete labour of love to the apprentices, now accomplished craftsmen, who aimed to use all of the original stones in its reconstruction, and as many traditional methods and building materials as they could use.

Although there is no trace left of the old merchant’s house in Haverfordwest, you can visit it in St Fagans, Cardiff . The open air museum is open daily from 10am-5pm and admission is free.

Manor ParkIn a life-changing move husband and wife team, Anna Ryder Richardson and Colin MacDougall arrived at Manor House Wildlife Park in early 2008.

Following a huge amount of work, the park re-opened to the public in August 2008, with a real acknowledgment from all inspectors of the enormous changes to the fabric of the park, to the Health and Safety systems instituted and the welfare of its animal collection. And quickly a graduate-only animal keeping department was established.

Steve, the solitary siamang gibbon is the icon of the park. With full consultation from renowned animal scientist Dr Jake Veasey (the park’s mentor) the building of a new state-of-the-art gibbon house and island began early on.

Steve’s story explains the park to visitors: Here was a maladjusted gibbon, stuck in a small cage with unsanitary and cramped sleeping quarters, alone for many years. Huge eff orts were made to improve his quality of life: new house, new garden, new mate, new off spring. Steve is rehabilitated, enjoys the freedom of the trees, and rather than being euthansed, he is now one of only 15 genetically important Siamang gibbons in Europe!

Manor House concentrates on endangered species – those that need human intervention in order to survive and the team wants visitors to understand how they can play a vital part in conservation. Visitors love these zoonique opportunities where they can get up-close and personal to endangered species, and understand their needs in the Wallaby Walkthrough, The Valley of the Apes, The African Village and the Lemur

Walkthrough (one of Europe’s largest).

2012 saw the long awaited arrival of the fi rst rhinos in Wales for 40,000 years. The rhino project started almost as soon as Colin and Anna arrived at the park – they knew from the beginning that something needed to be done. They visited Zamba (the fi rst AI rhino baby to be born in the UK), and his mother Cynthia in October 2009 and committed to him then. They set about the development of a state of the art rhino house and now Manor House is home to three young male white rhinos. (Poaching in South Africa has reached an all time high with one rhino being lost to professional gangs of illegal poachers every ten and a half hours)

The vision for the future concentrates on breeding programmes for endangered species and genetically important animals whose genes can be returned to the wild.

Visitors too have watched the conservation-led changes and have returned to support the championing of animal welfare and species survival. The many TV series fi lmed in the park over the last several years (including Anna’s Welsh Zoo, Wild Welsh Zoo etc.) have drawn huge audiences from right across the globe.

Visitor facilities have greatly improved with Anna’s team, attention to detail, and the all-inclusive entrance ticket gives you free access to all areas with nothing extra to pay. Real food and charming surroundings make this a true Pembrokeshire jewel – no wonder people come again and again! Plus with the park open over 320 days a year, it makes this the best value season ticket in Wales.

Follow us on Facebook for up to date news on the park.

Gardening is one of those things that take a lot of care and attention, and if you are otherwise occupied with taking care of the kids or busy in work, then when you get that hour to yourself, you want to spend it in blissful peace rather than pulling up those weeds.

The key to keeping your garden look like a paradise but remain low maintenance is to use plants that need hardly any attention and bloom throughout the year. If you want some easy to care for fl owers to brighten up your garden then planting some bulbs will ensure that your garden will be bright and cheerful each spring. Flowers like daff odils, tulips and snowdrops are perfect fuss free fl owers as they come into fl ower at the beginning of February and last up until May, while other fl owers like primroses will fl ower in May and last through the summer months.

Herb gardens are easy to maintain too. Herbs like lavender and rosemary fl ourish throughout the year and will fi ll your garden with the perfumed scents of the South of France. Lavender and Rosemary also require very little watering as they are both plants that survive well in hot countries. Herbs like mint or parsley will require a bit more tending too as they will need pruning if you have had a lot of wet weather.

If you’re looking for a greener fuss free garden then bear in mind plants that need a minimum amount of pruning and attention. Plants like conifers, palm trees

and ferns have their own distinctive shape so you can leave them to it. If you want a piece of greenery that fl owers a little though, shrubs like Mexican Orange Blossom and Honeysuckle are shrubs that will give your garden seasonal fl owering and perfumed scents that you can, especially on a summer evening when you’re having your BBQ.

Mowing your lawn once every week is a long and arduous task. Having a lawn is something you do have to keep up if you want your garden to look tidy at all times.

Reducing your lawn space is a good idea to keep the mowing to a minimum so think about paving some of your garden with brickwork detailing or stylish paving slabs. Likewise, using garden furniture or structures as a focal point in your garden will also minimise the amount of garden you have to tend to.

Any garden will need at least a little bit of maintaining, but hopefully if you invest in some honeysuckle plants and garden furniture, then you will be one step closer to gaining your fuss free garden of paradise.

Choosing your premises is as important as ensuring you have the right tools for the job. if you are currently running your business from home; a home business address will not always convey the same professional business like image that a separate business offi ce address can. A good location is vital, making sure your business is easy to fi nd, has good access and is visible. Work out the type of premises you require, how much space you need, and search for somewhere suitable.

Renting a serviced offi ce is ideal if you are an existing business wishing to save money on overheads or do not wish to sign a long term commitment.

We also have the support of so many people in Pembrokeshire who either donate lovely items or patronise the shop by calling in regularly to shop with us. The team of clinicians at Withybush Hospital CDU do such wonderful work with so many Pembrokeshire residents and their families and we believe they deserve out support”.

We are open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday between 9:30am and 4:00pm and Saturday mornings from 9:30am to 1:00pm.

On June 8th, Dr Mike Bartlett (Associate Specialist in Haematology) and based on the CDU will be undertaking a challenge walk along with some friends. He is aiming to ascend Snowdon, Cader Idris and Pen y Fan, the three highest mountains in Wales on the same day. Total length of walk will be 20.4 miles and a total climb of 9,397 feet (just short of one third the height of Mount Everest!).

If you would like to support Dr Mike you can go to our

website www.whcduappeal.co.uk and click on the ‘Donate’ button.

Having the additional support of Neil Evans, MD of West Wales Properties who has provided us with rent free shop premises means that we have little in the way of overheads with the result that nearly every pound we raise will go to our local Cancer Day Unit at Withybush.

WANT TO SUPPORT US?

For anyone wanting to give a cash donation they can donate by either logging onto our website www.whcduappeal.co.uk or

by sending a cheque to us or by calling into the shop. Don’t forget to tell us

if you want to Gift Aid your donation if you are a UK taxpayer (every £10 donation is worth £12.50).

We are always interested in receiving donations of good quality unwanted items (other than electrical goods and furniture)

If you are interested in volunteering at the shop please contact Trish on 01437 779955 or [email protected]

If you are thinking of organising a fund-raising event we have sponsorship forms available at the shop or support us by visiting www.everyclick.com

The support we have received from the people of Pembrokeshire is tremendous and on behalf of the volunteers who run the shop – a big ‘thank you’.

With the increase in the cost of fuel in the last few years, you would want to do everything you could to save your money on fuel and save the environment while you’re at it.

KEEP YOUR TYRES INFLATED

Under infl ated tyres increases the drag on your car therefore increasing how many times you will have to visit the petrol station. You can check the correct pressure for your tyres in your manufacturers guide.

DROP A FEW POUNDS

Before you set off , take a look in the back of your car. If it’s cluttered with lots of things then de-cluttering your boot will lighten your car meaning your car won’t have to work as hard.

REMOVE ROOF RACKS

If you remove your roof rack or roof box this will dramatically reduce your wind resistance and drag on your car.

TURN YOUR AIR-CON DOWN

Air conditioning increases the amount of fuel you use. If you are only travelling a short distance at a low speed then it is more effi cient to drive with your windows

down whereas a long distance journey at a fast speed using your air conditioning is far more benefi cial.

TURN YOUR ENGINE OFF

If you come to a junction or another stop and you can see that you’re going to be stopped there for a while, then it may be a good idea to turn your engine off while it’s safe. Keeping your engine running could run the risk of your car overheating and wasting fuel.

REDUCE THE AMOUNT YOU BRAKE

When you brake it turns your fuel into heat and brake dust therefore wasting the fuel you have just used. Allowing your car to slow down naturally is far more effi cient as your vehicle will drive from its stored momentum and energy.

GET THE BEST PRICES FOR YOUR FUEL

At the end of the day, it all comes down to money. Although this may not be convenient at all times, before you hit the red, research in your local area where the cheapest prices for fuel are at that time. In today’s current fi nancial climate, it’s inevitable that prices for fuel with fl uctuate but as long as you can fi nd the best price at the time, then you will be saving some money. Keep hold of any fuel vouchers or discounts you come across too as these will help.
