Having a focus on enjoyment and family time as well as learning will be invaluable: if you get caught up in a project or task feel free
to spend more time on it. If learning is fun and interesting, children will be more engaged.

The BBC now broadcasts brilliant daily lessons for all age groups in Key Stage One and Two. Why not have a look and see what you
think? You might like to do some of the BBC content and some of the suggestions here. See what you prefer. For BBC bitesize

English
Personification is often used in poetry and narratives. Make a list of 10 nouns (you could chose abstract or concrete nouns) and 10 verbs. Can you think of a sentence where each noun is doing an action? e.g. The candle flame danced in the darkness. Shadows and silence crept into the empty room. This lesson could help if you’re stuck: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zbd7mfr
This week you are going to write a Brain Swap poem by imagining you are someone else. To generate some ideas, think of a job (e.g. astronaut), famous person (e.g. Usain Bolt) or character from a book (Little Red Riding Hood) and write a riddle for someone to guess who they are. Follow these rules:
At least 6 clues
Use the present tense
Use lots of description
Try to trick the reader
Have a clever title
Finish with a question (who am I?)
Today you will plan your poem. Things to think about: Who is your poem about? Some ideas are: Key worker, superhero, a historical figure, a sports person, a character from a book, a person you admire, your best friend, a family member, an explorer, an astronaut or a scientist. Try out some poetry techniques you will use. E.g. Similes, metaphors, personification, onomatopoeia or alliteration What type of poem will you write? E.g. Free verse, rhyme, acrostic, narrative or a riddle. Draw a picture of the subject of your poem.
Write your poem. It may take several drafts to get it just right (all the best writers make several drafts and edit their work).

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zsmmkty 12.34 + 102.65 = 198.56 + 76.24 = 134.01 + 27.88 = 74.22 – 12.31 = 89.76 – 35.67 = 146.99 + 124.55 = 987.65 – 67.82 =
Years 5 & 6
How close can you get to the target number with the 6 numbers given? You can only use each number once but you can use each operation as many times as you like.

Year 6 Practise converting fractions into percentages. If you need help, look at this lesson:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zvcny9q 23/25 = 46/50 = 12/75 = 98/1000 = 75/500 = 123/1000 = 67/200 = 987/2000 =
Year 6 Practise comparing and ordering fractions, decimals and percentages. If you’re stuck, look at this lesson:

Science – Changing Materials
Crystals are a special kind of solid material where the molecules fit together in a repeating pattern. This pattern causes the material to form all sorts of unique shapes. Watch this video of Mexico’s giant crystal cave!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7yfx0ejELg
The process of crystal forming is called crystallization. Crystals often form in nature when liquids cool and start to harden. Certain molecules in the liquid gather together as they attempt to become stable. They do this in a uniform and repeating pattern that forms the crystal.
Try making your own at home! Equipment: two jars, a string of wool, water, two paper clips, a small plate and bi-carbonate of soda
Method: 1. Fill the two jars with hot water. Stir in about six teaspoons of bicarbonate soda,
until no more will dissolve (this is when even after stirring a layer of bicarbonate forms at the bottom of the jars). The water will fizz but this is ok!
2. Tie a paper clip to each end of the piece of wool and place each end in each jar. Place the plate under than hanging string to catch any falling crystals.
3. Leave the jars for a week. Crystals will grow along the wool and hang down over the plate.
What is happening? The bicarbonate solution is soaked up by the wool and moves along it. When the water evaporates, all that is left are the bicarbonate soda crystals . The hanging crystals are formed when the mixture starts to drip from the wool and evaporate.
Afternoon Project Work – ‘Africa’ Each fortnight we make a suggestion for an afternoon project. These suggested afternoon projects are reflective of what children in school are doing
Activity
Suggestions
There are
plenty of
ideas here
to keep you
occupied
over the
next two
weeks.
Fairtrade How much do you know about where our food and drink is grown and produced? Is it grown in this country or another country? Are the people who grow, harvest and package our food and drink treated fairly. Use the internet and books to research Fairtrade. You could try these websites: https://www.theschoolrun.com/ homework-help/fair-trade https://kids.britannica.com/kids/ article/fair-trade/476256 https://schools.fairtrade.org.uk/ resource/fairtrade-story-a-fair-tale/ Now make a Fairtrade poster to inform people about Fairtrade. You could design a new Fairtrade logo.
African Masks
Traditional masks are part of many
African cultures. These amazing pieces
of art have influenced European and
Western art. All African masks are
unique and show the diversity of
cultures and traditions.
Use the internet and books to research
African masks.

Now you try designing your own
Tribal Patterns and Prints Watch this video to find out how to make a picture inspired by African patterns and fabric prints. The video uses paints, but it would look just as good using colouring pencils or pens. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhytqHqc63I
A Kenyan Holiday
Using the information you have already found, and by doing further research,
make a holiday brochure for a holiday in Kenya.
What can people do in Kenya? Which places could they visit? Where could
they stay? What is the weather like at different times of the year?
Include lots of persuasive language and pictures!

Spelling Each year group / phase has a list of 200 or so spellings. Work through these at your own pace. Challenge yourself to learn 5, 10 or 20 a week. Write them out, write sentences using them (use a dictionary to check you know exactly what they mean) make crossword grids fitting all the words together. Try to use these words in any writing that you do. There are lots of online resources to help. For spellings lists see: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/239784/English_Appendix_1_-_Spelling.pdf
