Home Learning Suggestions
Having a focus on enjoyment and family time as well as learning will be invaluable: if you get caught up in a project or task feel free
to spend more time on it. If learning is fun and interesting, children will be more engaged.

Read and listen to the true story of Wangari Maathai and her amazing efforts to replant trees in parts of Africa devastated by deforestation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=08PbLwOtZJA
Make a story map or story board for the book.
Read and listen again to Wangari’s Trees of Peace. Look carefully at the language choices the author used. Can you find some good examples of descriptive language? Can you find any examples of similes? Write two contrasting paragraphs. The first paragraph should describe the barren landscape Wangari saw when the trees had been cut down. The second paragraph should describe the landscape after Wangari’s replanting project has been successful. You could use some of the vocabulary from the book.
Imagine you are a newspaper reporter writing an article about Wangari’s amazing project. What would you ask her? What would you ask the other women? What would you ask the officers who arrested her? What would their replies be? Write a newspaper article about Wangari’s project. Try to include quotes from the people above. Remember to include a headline, facts, quotes and a picture with a caption. If you’re stuck, look at this lesson. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z9jgn9q
Wangari Maathai was an inspirational woman who achieved amazing things. She was the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize for her environmental work and political activism. What can you find out about her and her legacy? Now make a fact- file about Wangari

Year 3: Find the missing numbers in these calculations: 4 x Δ = 24 937 – Δ = 602 Δ + 133 = 765 Δ = 324 + 96 12 x Δ = 72 120 ÷ Δ = 12 35 ÷ Δ = 5 Δ – 75 = 99 Now think of your own missing number questions
Year 3 How many different arrays can you draw for these numbers? 24, 30, 12, 28, 32, 40, 42, 36 Using your arrays, write down all of the multiplication and division facts you found for each number.
Year 3 Practise converting pounds and pence.
Pounds (£) Pence (p)
£2.60
870p
£6.60
£1.75
125p

Year 3 and 4 Buying a Balloon
Year 4: Find the missing numbers in these calculations: 1,899 – Δ = 1,200 Δ + 4,567 = 8,238 144 ÷ Δ = 12 Δ ÷ 12 = 7 Δ ÷ 9 = 11 ¼ of Δ = 12 ¾ of Δ = 21 8,999 – 4,671 = Δ Δ + 4,501 = 9,066 Can you think of your own missing number questions?
Year 4 Practise dividing numbers by 10. If you need help, watch this lesson: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zf39whv 237 ÷ 10 = 3,456 ÷ 10 = 884 ÷ 10 = 5,621 ÷ 10 = 999 ÷ 10 = 6,204 ÷ 10 = 706 ÷ 10 = Now think of your own numbers to divide by 10
If you’re stuck, look at this lesson. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/znf4kmn Year 4 https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z4dmhg8 Practise dividing these 1 and 2 digit numbers by 100. 4 27 8 12 99 7 45 Now think of your own numbers to divide by 100
Lolla bought a balloon at the circus. She gave the clown six coins to pay for it. What could Lolla have paid for the balloon? How many different amounts can you make with six coins? Which of your answers seems a reasonable amount to pay for a balloon?
Science
Look closely at these animals. Which one could be the odd one out and why? Could each animal be the odd one out for a different reason? You could think about:
- Appearance - Diet - Movement - Habitat
Afternoon Project Work – ‘Africa’
Each fortnight we make a suggestion for an afternoon project. These suggested afternoon projects are reflective of what children in school are doing.
Activity
Suggestions
There are
plenty of
ideas here
to keep you
occupied
over the
next two
weeks.
Fairtrade How much do you know about where our food and drink is grown and produced? Is it grown in this country or another country? Are the people who grow, harvest and package our food and drink treated fairly. Use the internet and books to research Fairtrade. You could try these websites: https://www.theschoolrun.com/ homework-help/fair-trade https://kids.britannica.com/kids/ article/fair-trade/476256 https://schools.fairtrade.org.uk/ resource/fairtrade-story-a-fair-tale/ Make a Fairtrade poster to inform people about Fairtrade. You could design a new Fairtrade logo.
African Masks
Traditional masks are part of many
African cultures. These amazing pieces
of art have influenced European and
Western art. All African masks are
unique and show the diversity of
cultures and traditions.
Use the internet and books to research
African masks.

Now you try designing your own
Tribal Patterns and Prints Watch this video to find out how to make a picture inspired by African patterns and fabric prints. The video uses paints, but it would look just as good using colouring pencils or pens. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WhytqHqc63I
A Kenyan Holiday
Using the information you have already found, and by doing further research,
make a holiday brochure for a holiday in Kenya.
What can people do in Kenya? Which places could they visit? Where could
they stay? What is the weather like at different times of the year?
Include lots of persuasive language and pictures!

Spelling Each year group / phase has a list of 200 or so spellings. Work through these at your own pace. Challenge yourself to learn 5, 10 or 20 a week. Write them out, write sentences using them (use a dictionary to check you know exactly what they mean) make crossword grids fitting all the words together. Try to use these words in any writing that you do. There are lots of online resources to help. For spellings lists see: https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/239784/English_Appendix_1_-_Spelling.pdf
