With Valentine’s Day just aroundthe corner, I say forget thechocolates and roses, boys —

those are so overrated — sure it’s sweetand all, but a girl like me is puckering upfor pizza! Yes, I said it, pizza. I’m head-over-heels in love with this pie of all pies!Thin as in a typical hand-tossed pizza orthick as in a typical pan pizza akaChicago-style pizza; I’m all over it. I am aself-proclaimed pizza fanatic!

So, doing away with all the sweet stuff, this week I bring to you some hearty andsavory pizzas, full of passion and madewith love. And if you’re in the mood forsome pizza perfection, bring your sweet-heart to the following Ono, You Know hotspots and treat your loved one to some ofthe best pizzas in town. They’re great forsharing by candlelight, but if you’reappetite is anything like mine, these piz-zas are best shared with me, myself and I!Xoxo.

Happy Valley Pasta & PizzaI was all smiles knowing that I was

about to journey on the path that leadsto Happy Valley Pasta & Pizza. Locatedon Monsarrat Avenue, this quaint estab-lishment offers Italian specialties with ahint of Japanese flair. And owner YukiSaito, who has been in the restaurant

industry for 15 years, couldn’t wait to share someof the eatery’s best-sellingitems.

“I was born and raised inJapan and my family was inthe restaurant business, so Ialways grew up aroundfood,” says Saito, who alsoserves as chef at HappyValley Pasta & Pizza. “Wesell a lot of pizza and pasta,of course, and we’re open

daily for lunch and dinner.”At a glance, you’ll notice a multitude of

appetizers on the menu, includingHomemade Focaccia ($1.98), FriedCalamari & French Fries ($7.98), soups, salads and more. However, eat smart andsave plenty of room for your entreebecause Happy Valley’s pizzas and pastasare definitely worth filling up on — espe-cially Happy Valley Style MargheritaPizza ($9.98). This classic, thin-crustpizza is simple in ingredients, but doesn’tin the least bit hold back on flavor.

“The pizza ishand-tossed andmade fresh,” Saitoexplains. “It’s atomato-based pizzatopped with moz-zarella andParmesan cheeseand a spiral ofpesto sauce.Instead of basilleaves, we thoughtit would be nice tosubstitute it withfresh pesto.”

For all of youcarnivores, Meat,Meat, Meat($11.98) is thepizza for you —morsels of sausage, chicken and baconadorn this onolicious pie. And whileyou’re at it, go beyond the realm of yourtypical pizza and take a bite out of therestaurant’s unique pizza options, such as

Bacon, Potato and Corn ($10.98),Karaage Chicken & Broccoli ($11.98)and Happy Valley Mix ($16.98).

“We’re changing the menu in April, andwill be presenting diners with new pizzaand pasta choices,” Saito says.

So with that, it’s bound to be happy eat-ing at Happy Valley Pasta & Pizza, whereevery menu option is guaranteed to makeyou smile!

ZpizzaZpizza is the purest of them all when it

comes to fresh flavors for the healthyappetite. So, who said you can’t have itall? Because here at Zpizza you can!Hawaii owner Cesar Llarenas opened theWard Centre restaurant in 2008, and mostrecently added a second location inKailua (151 Hekili St.). Business hasbeen booming at both locations knownfor its onolicious Southern Californian-

Italian cuisine, and Icouldn’t wait to grab aslice of this guilt-freepizza pie!

“All of our pizzasbegin with the bestingredients that are allnatural or certifiedorganic,” Llarenassays. “And it’s impor-tant that we keepeverything at a reason-able price.”

My list of Zpizzafavorites could go onforever, but since I’mhonoring the perfectpizza, I might as wellreveal my top threezesty picks, including

Moroccan Rustica Pizza ($12.95),Provence Pizza ($12.95 small, $23.95large, $26.95 extra-large) and ItalianPizza ($12.95 small, $23.95 large, $26.95extra-large).

For starters, Moroccan Rustica Pizzaoffers up a crispier, crunchier crust dec-orated by the most refreshing flavors ofbasil pesto, mozzarella, roasted egg-plant, feta cheese, caramelized onions, and garnished with a dash of pine nuts. And if you’re on a major health kick, you’ll be glad to know that this famousrustica pizza also is available witheither a regular or wheat crust.

Then, if you’re in the mood for aclassic at this pizza palace, opt forProvence Pizza made with a gluten-freecrust, organic tomato sauce and roastedgarlic sauce, and loaded with a varietyof toppings — mozzarella, artichokehearts, capers, tomatoes and fresh basil— that’ll please any veggie lover. Addchicken sausage for an additional cost ifyou care to spice it up some.

Now, being a bit biased, the Italian galin me just had to save the best pizza forlast, because let me tell you, Zpizza’sItalian Pizza is an absolute winner in my

Ichiriki Japanese Nabe Restaurant isknown for its authentic Japanese cui-sine, but more so, this chic and modern

establishment brings family and friendstogether for an entertaining and interactivedining experience like no other. Open forlunch and dinner, patrons flock to thisrenowned eatery to enjoy an assortment ofJapanese nabe — a term referring to anarray of Japanese steamboat or one potdishes — as well as sukiyaki, tasty shabushabu options and more.

This restaurant of choice for many hun-gry diners opened the doors to its initiallocation on Piikoi Street in 2006, andmost recently opened its second locationthis past June in Westridge, Aiea.

Dining Out recently caught up withIchiriki Piikoi general manager Min Kim,who graciously shared with us the ins andouts of this nabe hot spot, which has beenintriguing the appetites of foodies galore!

DO: Ichiriki is always bustling withdiners who can’t wait to sample thefamous cuisine here. What makes Ichirikistand out from other Japanese restaurants?

Kim: Ichiriki specializes in a veryunique dining experience, that uses a hotpot to create savory meals, like shabushabu and sukiyaki. We are well knownfor our nabe. Nabe is Japanese hot pot,and our broths are flavored! We havealmost every flavored broth you canimagine: Shoyu, Pork, Salt/Chicken,Tomato, Curry, Kimchi, Ginger, Yuzu, thelist goes on! We also offer a wide varietyof vegetables, meats, seafood and noodlesto cook inside the broth. Our specialty isKami Nabe, which is a pot made out ofpaper. The kami paper is set right over theflame, and cooks the broth and freshingredients, while also absorbing the nat-ural oils of the meats, making it a healthi-er option. Many people find it hard tobelieve that the paper does not burn, andI’ve been sworn to secrecy on that magictrick. I really enjoy watching the exciting“ooohs and aaahs,” when our diners arefirst introduced to Kami Nabe. Our staff isalways thinking of ways to make our din-ers fully happy — which we try our bestto do by providing exceptional servicethat is always improving and one-of-a-

kind dining experiences that are memo-rable.

DO: For someone who has yet to dineat Ichiriki, how would you describe thedining concept?

Kim: Our concept is fun, traditionalJapanese dining where everyone can eat, drink and be merry. We are family, date, group friendly! We’re also very afford-able, and for those looking for that extraspecial deal, we have early bird discountswhere all our nabe, shabu shabu andsukiyaki dishes are 25 percent off from 5to 6 p.m. Late Night Specials start at 9:30and nabes start at $11.95. We also haveHappy Hour drink specials at both loca-tions. It’s a fun place to eat with lots ofmenu items.

DO: How would you describe theatmosphere and dining environment atIchiriki?

Kim: We like to think of our restaurantas a living room — it’s a fun place to be,and definitely a great place to entertain. We have traditional Japanese floor seat-ing, where you sit on the floor, but wemade it more relaxing by adding wells foryour legs so you don’t have to sit Indian-style. It’s extremely comfortable and dif-ferent. We cater to all ages, families, groups and special occasions.

DO: Ichiriki has been very successful. How did the idea for the restaurantcome about?

Kim: The restaurant’s concept cameabout when founders Riki Kobayashiand Issei Kazama decided to pursuetheir lifelong dream of opening a restau-rant. What’s funny is that shabu shabuand sukiyaki were always Kazama’sfavorite childhood meal. Then, it turnsout Riki actually studied nabe in Japanfor a while and had a passion for invent-ing great hot pot dishes. It was only des-tined that they would open up IchirikiJapanese Nabe Restaurant.

DO: Well, we’re glad that dreambecame reality. Who is the main chef here?

Kim: The owners of both locationsactually create and come up with each

menu item together. They are constantlymeeting, almost weekly, inventing newmenu items. There also are a fewkitchen staff members who have gone toculinary school, and we are alwaysencouraging them to embark on menucreativity. Our very own kitchen super-visor, Andrew Doi, was the mastermindbehind the Tomato Nabe and the secretAngry Goma.

DO: What are some of the restaurant’smost popular dishes?

Kim: Our Kobe Beef Shabu Shabu isgaining fast popularity, especially at thelate night price of $19.95 ($28.95 regu-lar dinner price). We’ve noticed peoplelining up at 9 p.m. to grab a table forlate-night dining. This shabu shabuoption features 5 ounces of melt-in-your-mouth slices of Kobe Kalbi Eye,served with a wide variety of vegeta-bles, ponzu and goma dipping sauces, and your choice of ramen, udon orzosui. Our two most popular nabessince we’ve opened are Ichiriki (shoyubroth) and Pirikara (spicy shoyu broth). We usually recommend these two nabesfor first-timers. Both come with a largevariety of vegetables and your choice ofbeef, chicken or pork. These nabes alsoare on our late-night menu for $13.95and $11.95 respectively. Regular dinnerprice is $21.95. People also loveSeafood Kami Nabe ($59.95 for twopeople). This seafood lover’s paradisecomes in our signature Ichiriki Shoyusoup base with snow crab, jumboshrimp, calamari, scallops and an largeassortment of vegetables.

DO: Delicious! Are there any newitems on the menu?

Kim: Yes, we have new nabes:Tomato Nabe ($21.95), Paitan ($21.95),and, of course, our secret Angry GomaNabe with Habanero Peppers ($22.95)for spicy lovers. Angry Goma Nabe isnot printed on our menu, this is actuallya secret nabe that has sparked an under-ground cult following. This nabe wascreated to make those that love to liveon the spicy edge happy. This Nabe isslowly simmered in a deep flavoredGoma (sesame) broth and made out ofreal habanero and jalapeno peppers. Wealso recently started offering SukiyakiBeef Bento ($7.95) that consists of beefsukiyaki with our homemade tsukunemeatballs and some seasonal vegeta-bles. Sukiyaki Bento is available daily

from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at both loca-tions, and if you purchase four, you getone free.

Kim: Yes, our appetizers includeChicken Karaage ($5.95), Ahi Poke($5.95), Mushroom Medley ($6.95),Pork Kimchi ($9.95), Fried Calamari($4.95) and Tofu Salad ($4.95).

DO: What do you think has con-tributed to Ichiriki’s continued success?

Kim: Well, besides our nabes —there’s so many options and so many fla-vors — you’re bound to get hooked onone you love, we’re also told that oursukiyaki is a favorite. Peoplealso love the floor seating. It’s super comfortable andgreat for parties and kidsespecially. We get dinersvisiting from Japan whosay, “It’s just like Japan!”Lastly, our Green TeaShave Ice is always a hit.Plus, we have lots ofoptions for vegetarians, vegans and people withfood restrictions.

DO: Who is your clien-tele at both locations?

Kim: We have a goodmix of locals andtourists. A lot of touristscome to visit after read-ing about us on Yelp orother online forums, which is great! It’salways such an honor tomeet these folks whotaxi their way over herejust to have nabe! Wealso have a lot of regu-lars, and we are lucky to have such greatsupporters — they have seriously helpedshape Ichiriki and continue to encourageus to improve every day.

If you make a stop at FukuyaDeli and Catering, the okazuya(Japanese delicatessen) on

King Street, you’ll find old-timerswhose families have known andloved the little shop since itopened down the street from itscurrent location in 1939.

Laughter and familiarity per-meate the walls as regulars talkstory while lining up for hand-selected meals filled with sam-plings of potato hash, sushi,

chow fun noodles, nishimeand more.

“Those are all origi-nal recipes from way

back when,” saysowner ArrisonIwahiro.

The restaurantalso specializesin catering foranything fromlarge events to

home parties.Items such as

Sushi Tray ($30, 43pieces; $48, 70 pieces;

$60, 70 pieces), with a

variety of maki, cone sushi, cucumber, takuan, tamago andoshizushi are beautifully present-ed for large groups as well.

The families that have madeFukuya a staple in their lives alsolove a taste of its specialty teribeef ($4.75), chicken ($4.75) andhot dog ($4.50) rolls, made withplain rice as opposed to sushi-style rice.

“They’re great for picnics, kid’ssporting events or after surfing. And they’re easy to eat, kind oflike a meal in a roll,” Iwahiro sayswith a laugh. Teri Beef Roll, forexample, is like eating a platelunch rolled up with Spam, beef, rice and furikake.

The owner also puts his person-al touch on the legendary deli-catessen’s menu with his take onNori Chicken ($2.10 per piece).Japanese-style marinated chickenis topped with small sheets ofnori, then deep-fried to sumptu-ous perfection.

Just as generation after gener-ation has done, take a queuefrom the old-timers and makeFukuya Deli and Catering yourfavorite okazuya.

As its name suggests,Fendu Boulangerie offersdelightful European-style

pastries and breads, baked freshevery day. But with a range ofAmerican pastries, sandwichesand even pizza, there’s more tothis charming bakery than meetsthe eye.

Owner and chef Niel Koepdescribes Lemon MerenguePie ($5.25) as a classicAmerican dessert that’s notoften found in Hawaii. First, amixture of freshly flavoredlemon curd and sabayon fillsan almond sugar pie crust. Then, sweet peaks ofmerengue are piped on andtorched before candied lemonpeel and green cacao buttergarnishes are added to com-plete the light pastry.

Other unexpected deca-dences include warmly servedsandwiches created by theeatery’s cooks. House-maderustic buns are grilled for 12minutes to give a crispy outerlayer to Chicken Pesto Panini($8), filled with chicken ten-derloin, homemade pesto

(basil, macadamia nut andolive oil), Hamakua tomatoes, bacon, shallot and goat cheesegloriously melted together.

“That is one of our best-sell-ing sandwiches. We puttogether different combina-tions of things and decided

that this one worked the best,”describes Koep. With the dis-tinctive sandwich’s depth offlavor, I’d take his word for it.

So the next time you fancy aFrench pastry, by all means, satisfy that craving. But leaveroom for the host of Americangoodies — both sweet andsavory — that FenduBoulangerie serves up.

Yes, real men eat hum-mus. Especially whenit’s made from

edamame, served in a won tonbowl, spread over fried tofuand enjoyed overlookingWaikiki beach. Writing aboutfood can be such a burden. Butnot this time. EdamameHummus ($11.50) at OceanHouse in Outrigger WaikikiReef Hotel is fantastic.Recently introduced by exec-utive chef Craig Yasaka, thetraditional chick pea spreadgets a local twist that createsa taste that general managerDavid Nagaishi correctlysays, “... tastes like the island. Ithas all the local mixes in there.”

The creamy edamame is a per-fect complement to the moder-ately spicy Baked SeafoodDynamite ($14.50). Comprisedof lobster, shrimp, scallops andtopped with a garlic chili aioli, the seafood medley is light andnaturally sweet. The clean, freshtaste fits perfectly with the casu-al elegance that eptiomises therestaurant’s décor.

Not enough seafood for you?Try Island Style Sashimi

($13.50) or CoconutLobster Skewers($14.50). Where BakedSeafood Dynamite hassome kick, Sashimi’sHot Hawaii ChiliSauce offers someserious heat. No need

to worry if temperatureis a concern. The sauce

is served on the side, offering a tantalizing option

for the daring. Either with the

chili sauce or without, the sashi-mi is top-grade and buttery.Topped with a hot sesamepeanut oil and set on a bed ofradish sprouts, Maui onion andgreen onion, it’s a pupu wantingto be a meal.

Lobster Skewers, served on awedge of Maui Gold Pineapple,is perhaps the most “Hawaiian”in presentation, but don’t let theVisitor’s Bureau look fool ya,this is some seriously good localgrinds. Made with SlipperLobster tail that is brought infresh daily, the sweet and tendermeat is covered in a coconutbreading and served with asweet chili lime dipping sauce.

Finally, Seared Peppered SeaScallops ($12.50) are made withpan-seared jumbo scallops andserved with mushrooms and asoy, sake and garlic buttersauce. What more needs to besaid? It’s scallops in soy, sakeand garlic butter! How can thatnot be good?!

Choi’s Garden sprouts up anarray of traditional Koreandelicacies that have been

winning over appetites of thosewho love the flavors of this fantas-tic cuisine. Conveniently locatedon Rycroft Street, this famed restauranthas been in businesssince 2012, offeringthe best in home-style Korean food.

According to host-ess Temi Chang, there are manyentrees that are sureto captivate all yoursenses, includingRaw Beef and Mixed VeggiesRice in Hot Stone Pot, Sam GaeTang and Hae Mool Pa Jun.

Priced at ($17.99), Raw Beef andMixed Veggies Rice in HotStone Pot fulfills your cravings,as it consists of various mixedvegetables (including carrots, choy sum, raddish and more),raw meat and pan-fried slicedegg atop a bed of steamed riceserved in a hot pot.

“The meat cooks while inthe stone pot, and it’s goodto mix everything together,”Chang says. “The best partis the crispy rice that is leftin the bowl.”

Hae Mool Pa Jun ($15.95)is considered one of theeatery’s most popular dish-es, and Chang compares it toa seafood pancake completewith octopus, oysters, shrimp and green onions.

“It’s very tasty, but customersalso love Sam Gae Tang becauseit’s very nutritious and refreshing— it gives you the energy that youneed,” she adds.

In the 35 years and counting since KeoSananikone opened the doors to hispopular Thai restaurant in the heart of

Waikiki, customers have grown fond ofthe authentic cuisine made with quality, fresh ingredients served at affordableprices.

Another key ingredient to the successof Keo’s Thai Cuisine is “consistency,”according to Paul Sananikone, Keo’sbrother who manages the restaurant.“Especially when you deal with localpeople, you can’t fool Hawaii diners;they are very smart. A lot of people hereare knowledgeable, especially when eat-ing out.”

Keo’s welcomes dinersinto its open air atmos-phere and gardensetting completewith an array offresh floralarrangements, and Thai stat-ues and décor.Cool breezespass throughthe eatery, car-rying with themaromas of sweetcurries and tanta-lizing spices that areincorporated in a widearray of desirable dishes.

In addition to countless loyal local cus-tomers who dine at the Waikiki eatery ona regular basis, Keo’s has fostered a fol-lowing amongst celebrities as well. As theenormous celebrity photo wall at Keo’sentrance attests, the restaurant has hostedhundreds of athletes, actors, recordingartists and dignitaries including MikeTyson, Tina Turner, Keanu Reeves,Michael J. Fox, Paula Abdul, Elton John,Will Smith and Kareem Abdul Jabbar.According to Paul, while high-profile fig-ures are always stopping by the restau-rant, the friendly staff goes out of its wayto treat each guest like royalty.

“We try to do ordinary thingsextraordinarily well,” Paul

says. “We try to treateverybody like a

movie star. I tell myworkers that whenpeople walk in thedoor, they arecoming to spendtheir hard-earned money. You have to givethem what they

pay for. In therestaurant busi-

ness, you don’t get asecond chance.” Keo’s popularity can

also be linked to its signa-

ture dish, Evil Jungle Prince ($14.95 withchicken, $16.95 with seafood and$12.95 with vegetables and tofu). What sounds like a villainousmovie character is actually therestaurant’s flagship dish that hasbeen featured in publicationsaround the world that toutKeo’s as the premier diningdestination. The dish fea-tures one’s desired meat orvegetables combined withfresh basil, coconut milkand red chili pepper andserved on a bed ofchopped cabbage.

“Our Evil Jungle Prince bringin a lot of movie stars who come in justbecause they heard about this dish,” Paulsays. “Everybody tries to copy it, but it’snever the same. We must be doing some-thing right! The spices and basil, a lot ofchili all come together to make a dishthat people can associate with. Whenpeople think of Evil Jungle Prince, theythink of Keo’s.”

eight children, and moved to Hawaii duringtheir junior high school years. Paul credits hisfather, a successful businessman in Thailand, with giving him and Keo the tools to succeedvia an American education.

“Our father invested in education for hiskids rather than just giving us money,” saysPaul of his dad, who sent all eight children toschool in America. “Money can be taken awayor stolen; an education can’t be taken away. Asyou get older, you start to understand whatyour parents are talking about. If you are will-ing to work hard in America, anything can hap-pen.”

In addition to the restaurant and family gro-cery store, Keo also operates a farm in theMokuleia area, where he grows most of thevegetables used in the eatery. This self-sustain-ing system allows Keo to both enjoy his hobbyas well as provide fresh ingredients for therestaurant that go from the farm to one’s platewithin hours.

“His farm is all organic and free of any pes-ticides,” says Paul of his brother. “Keo has agreen thumb. He can grow anything!”

Some of the farm’s fresh vegetables can befound in Soft Shell Crab with Basil ($19.95) as

well as another seafood favorite, PanangShrimp and Scallops ($15.95), whichincorporates kaffir lime leaves, freshground lemon grass, peas and coconut milk.

Keo’s also is known for its famous Sa-Teh Chicken ($9.95), four pieces of juicy, white meat chicken on skewers served with

a spicy peanut sauce. Another favorite is TomYum Soup ($4.95), an eclectic mix of shrimp, lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, green onion, cilantro, mushrooms and lime juice.

“We know that a lot of local people likeseafood, so we try to feature it a lot,” Paulsays.

In addition to the regular menu, Keo’s isserving up a special Valentine’s Day Dinner($29.95 per person) that appropriately includesa fresh rose for each couple. Each V-Day dinerreceives an appetizer selection,Green Papaya Salad, choice ofentrée — including the infamousEvil Jungle Prince — and achoice of white Jasmine, brownor sticky rice. End the night withice cream or tapioca for dessert, and during the meal, Paul sug-gests ordering the MangoDaiquiri ($6.50) to complete theexperience.

As is the case with most nightsat Keo’s, the dining room fills upquickly, so reservations are rec-ommended.

Sakura Terrace gets its name from the saku-ra, or cherry blossom, flowers that bloomin Japan in the spring. During the time of

the sakura blossoms in Japan, which usually occursin late March or early April, SakuraTerrace will honor its namesake with itsgrand opening.

Making an appearance during thegrand opening will be extensive newmenu items, which will become perma-nent additions to Sakura Terrace.

“We wanted to coordinate the grandopening with the blossoms,” Cariagasays. “And some of the things we addto the menu will include little touchesof the sakura flower.” For example, therestaurant currently serves hot drinksthat include a small sakura for flavor.

Sakura Terrace is currently in theprocess of creating dishes for the newmenu, and they’ve got a lot of ideas inthe works. They are looking to incor-porate more healthy ingredients like veg-etables and tofu. The chefs are busythinking up innovative dishes, and havebeen working with their regular customers

to get feedback and suggestions. The new menu will be out soon, but customers don’t have to wait until the

sakura is in bloom to try some new dishes. During the month of February,Sakura Terrace offers Sakura Steak ($15). The restaurant offers one or tworotating specials each month.

And for those who are still looking for Valentine’s Day plans, SakuraTerrace is a perfect place to take your date. The restaurant is chic, and thepatio seating in particular has an intimate feel.

“It’s a casual elegance,” Cariaga says, adding that Sakura Terrace is anideal Valentine’s Day location. “It has such a nice feel, and it’s very romantic.”

othing says“amour” like delight-ful delicacies fromPatisserie La PalmeD’Or. The eatery, which first opened in2006 at Ala Moana

Center, features special sweets everyValentine’s Day, and this year is noexception. Numerous customers oftencrowd the patisserie during the daysleading up to — and the day of —Valentine’s Day.

For Valentine’s Day 2012, La PalmeD’Or proudly presents two differentcakes — Passion Delight andRaspberry Amor ($37 small; $26 extra-small). Comprising of a variety offruity mousse flavors, Passion Delightfeatures layers of white chocolate, banana and strawberry mousse withpassion cream accents atop a layer ofvanilla sponge cake. Raspberry Amorincludes layers of milk tea chocolatecream and a chocolate hazelnut crunchatop chocolate almond sponge cake. The dessert is adorned with a raspberryganache. The extra-small sizes are rec-ommended for two to four people, while the small sizes can be shared

among four to six people. While the two special cakes are

often sold whole, slices of each areavailable as well, according to execu-tive chef Akiko Kimura.

“They’re (slices) available in ourdisplay case for $4.95,” she says.

The unique flavors and upscaledécor of the pastries at La Palme D’Ormake the eatery different from otherpatisseries, as does the eatery’s fineingredients.

“It’s a store where you can buydesserts that have both Japanese andEuropean flavors,” explains sales asso-ciate Erika Donohoe. “The elegance ofthe pastries makes it unique (as well).”

The patisserie’s signature pastry isGateau Au Fraise ($4.95), or a straw-berry shortcake, with layers of lightmoist sponge cake sandwiched withfresh whipped cream and sliced straw-berries. This pastry can be sold by theslice or customers can order the entirecake ($25 extra small, $35 small, $45medium and $60 large). Cheese D’Or($4) is another customer favorite.

“It’s like a fluffy cheesecake — verylight in texture,” says Kimura.

La Palme D’Or offers customersmany unique treats. For example,Crunchy Choco Sandwich ($2.50) —a fancier twist on the classic brownie— features a walnut and macadamianut-laden brownie sandwiched with amilk chocolate hazelnut crunch. LaMacha ($4.45) is a distinctive combi-nation of green tea mousse, chocolatemousse and a layer of fine chocolatesponge cake. Finally, Chocolate Mintpastry ($4.50) — comprising of mintmousse atop a light combination ofchocolate sponge filled with choco-late mousse and chocolate pearls —was introduced during the holidaysand is still available for purchase.

While elegant pastries are La PalmeD’Or’s claim to fame, the patisserie isalso well known for its Jelly au Laitdrinks. Customers can choose to eator drink Jelly au Lait ($3.25 withoutmilk), or flavored French jelly topped

with whipped cream. Jelly au Laitcomes in several variations, incorporat-ing milk ($4.55), soymilk ($5.25) ormocha ($5.55) to the drink. Signaturedrinks includePlantation TeaJelly ($4) — atextured summerdrink made with100 percentpineapple juicewith sweetenedblack tea — andJelly au LaitMocha ($5.55),La Palme D’Or’sh o u s e - m a d echocolate milkwith real choco-late. Lava Flow($4) — a creamyblend of LaPalme D’Or’soriginal straw-berry pureemixed with con-densed milk — isanother populardrink.

In addition to the patisserie’s pas-tries and drinks, its brunch sand-wiches and apple pies — half slicesof green apples covered in almondcrème and wrapped in puff pastry —are best-sellers.

“Our sandwiches — HomemadeCroissant Tuna Salad or BLT sand-wiches ($4.15) — and apple pies arereally popular,” Donohoe says.“They usually sell out around 1 p.m.and we make a limited amount eachday.”

La Palme D’Or does not featuredaily or monthly promotions; rather, the specials are usually featuredaround occasions, such asValentine’s Day. The various holi-days influence the patisserie’s menu.

“We tend to change as we havespecial events; we bring in newitems and take out the old ones,”Donohoe states.
