Principal News:

Principal message Greetings from CHS! And Happy New Year! The first semester of the school year is quickly winding down. This is a very busy time of year for us. We are also in the beginning stages of planning for the next school year and our student testing season. There is a lot of important dates and information in this edition of the Hawk Nest. Some important dates: - Monday, January 16: Martin Luther King Day, NO SCHOOL - Thursday, January 19 and Friday, January 20: Semester 1 final tests - Friday, January 20: last day of Semester 1

Page 3: Hawk Nest - Chaska High Schoolchs.district112.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2017/01/January... · The Hawk Nest NEWS from CHASKA HIGH SCHOOL ... Parents can check their student's

- Monday, January 23: Workshop Day, NO SCHOOL - Tuesday, January 24: Semester 2 starts

Ending Semester 1 and Beginning Semester 2 Thirteen school days remain in semester one. Friday, January 20th is the last day of the semester. All classes have projects or tests at the end of the semester. Thursday and Friday of the last week are scheduled as 4-period days to allow end of semester work to be spread over two different days. Students are encouraged to complete any missing work as soon as possible and begin preparing to complete semester 1. Parents can check their student's progress on Parent Portal. This can sometimes help motivate students who may be struggling to achieve the grades they desire. Semester two begins Tuesday, January 24th. Monday, January 23rd is a grading day for staff and day off for students. Some classes at CHS are a year-long and will continue into the second semester. Some classes at CHS are one semester in length, so students may be starting some new classes on Tuesday.

Semester 2 Schedule Changes This time of the year also has students looking at their semester 2 schedule. Below is information about the process for students and families interested in making a schedule change. We believe this process will be fair for all students and allow for schedule changes as space in classes allow. This is when and where students can seek information and/or make a schedule change:

Counselors will be available at all lunches in the commons the week of January 17th – 20th. Schedule changes will be made after school on Tuesday, January 24th and Wednesday, January

25th in P130 from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Information and forms for making changes will be available in house offices and from counselors

at lunches the week of changes. Students can drop off schedule change requests in P130 or stop in to visit with a counselor.

CURRICULUM/REGISTRATION NIGHT FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF 9th, 10th and 11th STUDENTS THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 9 @ 6:30 PM AT CHS – Blue House Forum 6:30 pm Counselor and teacher presentation on CHS registration

and post-high school planning – Blue House Forum

7:15 pm Question/answer session in the Commons PSEO Informational Night is Thursday, February 16 at 7:00pm

Registration Resources The course registration guide provides detailed information about each course, including length,

credits, and topics. Current and past teachers can provide suggestions about appropriate courses. Registration information is available at the high school website:

http://chs.district112.org/ Click on “Academics” then “Registration Information”. Contact a counselor at any time if you have questions about course selection

Tips for Selecting Courses for Next Year Review a transcript and understand current credit status toward graduation. Use graduation requirements table in the Registration Guide. Select the appropriate level of courses required for graduation and entrance into college if that is

your plan. Select other electives based on interest, ability, and post-high school preparation.

Scheduling Information/Background The high schools create a master schedule based on student requests. This means sections of courses in each semester and the teachers who teach those sections are determined by student requests. It is extremely important that students be as accurate as possible in making those requests and be committed to taking those classes. Courses will be cancelled if there are not enough students enrolled. Please understand that student registration requests help the school know student preferences and create a schedule. Students register for courses only. They are not able to request semesters, periods, or teachers. Scheduling software will attempt to manage parameters such as: keeping the same teacher in multi-semester courses, placing prerequisite courses first, and scheduling required courses before electives. In some cases, requests conflict with each other and a complete schedule cannot be created.

Page 5: Hawk Nest - Chaska High Schoolchs.district112.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2017/01/January... · The Hawk Nest NEWS from CHASKA HIGH SCHOOL ... Parents can check their student's

Schedule Changes Next Year Counselors do work with students to address scheduling issues. Schedule changes are limited to courses that have available spaces and priority is placed on certain issues. Among the highest priority issues are:

1. To fill an open period. 2. A 11th or 12th grade student registered for PSEO classes who need a schedule adjustment to

accommodate college classes. 3. Any students who have a scheduled course for which they have not completed a prerequisite. 4. Any students who have a scheduled course they have already completed. 5. Any student whose teacher has indicated that placement in a scheduled course is inappropriate. 6. Any senior needing a specific requirement for graduation or college admission.

We cannot stress enough the importance of students registering accurately for the classes they want to take.

Final Word Complete, accurate, and timely registration is extremely important. Chaska High School puts a tremendous amount of energy into offering courses that meet student needs, helping students register accurately, and creating a master schedule based on student requests. Student investment in making quality requests during registration is very important. Please feel welcome to contact Kathy Fontes, Assistant Principal at 952-556-7183 if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

PreACT Test for all 10th Graders is February 2nd The PreACT takes place on Thursday, February 2 from 8:10 am – 11:30 am. All 10th grade students will participate in the PreACT assessment. The PreACT provides a unique practice experience for taking the ACT test. PreACT results give students, parents, and educators valuable insights into students’ predicted performance on the ACT as they plan for a future that aligns with their interests. The PreACT also includes the ACT Interest Inventory to help students begin thinking about careers and college majors. Students should bring a number 2 pencil with an eraser and a calculator. In order to follow testing guidelines, students are not allowed to bring a cell phone into the testing room. If you have additional questions, please contact Garrett Silker at 952-556-7172 or [email protected]. To learn more about this assessment, visit the ACT website at http://www.act.org/preact

ACT Test for All Juniors Scheduled for Wednesday, April 19 This is the same ACT administered nationally on select Saturdays This is an official ACT score. It is college and scholarship reportable (except for very specific

accommodations) The writing component is included There is no cost to students. All juniors will be expected to participate even if they have taken the test previously Testing will begin at 8:10 and will last until approximately 1:00

Much more information to come as the test nears. Please contact your student’s counselor with questions.

East Parking Lot (Green Door) – Please Drive Slowly and Carefully Please drive slowly and cautiously in our East parking lot and honor the right of way for pedestrians. Please do not leave cars parked and unattended in the drop-off / fire lane. Our East parking lot at CHS is a very busy place. High School student drop off and pick up occurs in the morning and during the day. Family Learning Center parents are coming and going for early childhood classes and programs. Other reminders:

Page 6: Hawk Nest - Chaska High Schoolchs.district112.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2017/01/January... · The Hawk Nest NEWS from CHASKA HIGH SCHOOL ... Parents can check their student's

Please remember that it is illegal to pass a school bus with its red lights flashing on and its stop arm extended. This includes roadways as well as the CHS parking lot.

Busses use the west entrance throughout the day to transport students and your cooperation with them allows bus traffic to move freely and stay on schedule.

Parking is prohibited where there are signs indicating such and/or the curb is painted yellow

You can Get Weather Related School Closing Information Multiple Ways How do you know when school might be closed due to snow and ice? There are multiple ways to find out the status of the school day:

District 112 notifies families of school closures through the Infinite Campus Messenger Service. All parents will receive a phone call soon after the decision is made.

Enable Text Message from the District (see above)

District 112 contacts Channels 4, 5, 9, and 11 and WCCO-AM radio as early as possible when school is canceled for the day. (We call immediately after the decision is made, but we have no control over when the message airs.)

Check our website at www.district112.org. The notice should be on the front page.

E-mail from TV stations. At least one TV station, Channel 11, has an e-mail service that notifies you when the schools are closed. Check it out at www.kare11.com. Our school district is called “Eastern Carver County” at the website.

Here are other school closing reminders:

If our schools close early, there is no afternoon kindergarten and no after-school childcare.

If our schools start late, there is no morning kindergarten, no all-day kindergarten at ECC, and no before-school child care.

After-school activities and sporting events are generally canceled if school is not in session or if school closes early.

If bad weather develops in the afternoon, activities may be canceled. Principals will make an announcement to students if activities are canceled.

Decision affects bussing for all schools; public, private, and specialized service served by District 112.

The decision to close school is based on road conditions and the weather forecast. Our bottom line is student safety. Parents always have the prerogative to keep children home or to pick up children from school if your assessment of the weather situation differs from the school districts.

FINANCIAL AID If you missed Financial Aid Night click here for the power point presentation and click here for the Helpful Financial Aid Websites handout . You can start working on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form whenever you’re ready starting October 1, 2016 using your 2015 tax information. Remember to go online at www.fafsa.ed.gov and establish your FSA ID. As you complete the FAFSA, you can use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool that allows students and families to access IRS Tax return information. We urge you to contact the financial aid office at the college of your choice to get answers to questions about the FAFSA, or qualifying for financial aid. Great, informative website: www.StudentAid.gov Please note: all male students 18-25 years old MUST register with the Selective Service, www.sss.gov, to be eligible for federal financial aid.

LOCAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM On January 24, 2017, we will open up the local scholarship application process by making applications available on the CRC website. Students will be invited to read through the information to see if they will need additional forms, essays, applications, etc. All local scholarship program applications are due to the CRC by 3:30pm, Thursday, March 2, 2017, no exceptions.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION If a college application or scholarship application requires letters of recommendation - and many do not require any at all - most often they are looking for one from a recent core academic teacher (English, science, math, social studies) and/or your counselor. If you do need a letter of recommendation, please make sure to give the writer plenty of time to create the letter and to get it to its destination before the deadline. Many CHS teachers or counselors will ask you to turn in the "SENIOR RECOMMENDATION REQUEST & INFORMATION FORM” which gives them a better idea of who you are outside the classroom. A copy of the form can be found here: https://goo.gl/QMb3F0 This form can also be a good resume template for all students - a good way to keep track of activities, jobs, interests, etc. Although a teacher may return a letter of recommendation to you, typically the letter is submitted without the student seeing it first. Here is a good recommendation letter checklist:

Fill the form out once and make copies if you need to give it to more than one recommender

Give the teacher/counselor at least two weeks’ notice

Fill out and give teacher/counselor completed senior recommendation form

Arrange a pick-up or mail by date

Provide an addressed, stamped envelope if needed

Send a Thank you note to teacher/counselor

Students can sign up for the visits and get a pass in the CRC. For up to date college visits and career events visit the Chaska High School calendar at: http://chs.district112.org/ College visits will be listed each day under “Daily College Visits” or click this link to an alphabetical list https://goo.gl/WsrMGe Follow the CRC on Twitter @ChaskaHighCRC for daily college visit reminders.

ACT/SAT Act and SAT tests are offered throughout the year. Students can log on to ACT’s web site, www.actstudent.org to register for their ACT test. To register online for the SAT test students should go to www.collegeboard.com. Students must upload a photo when registering for the ACT or SAT. Students are required to bring their admission ticket and photo id on the test day. No ticket, no photo id, no admission! As a general rule, we recommend that juniors start taking their ACT’s in the 2nd half of their junior year. However, some students are ready before that time and are certainly welcome to test earlier. One guideline is to wait until the student has either completed or has taken at least one semester of algebra 2. Student may take the tests as often as they choose. Official ACT and SAT scores can also be requested to be sent to a student’s college(s) of choice through both of these websites.

Happy New Year! There is a fresh new year laid out before us, a great time to begin with a clean slate. We are nearing the end of the 1st semester already, and now is a great time for students to check on their library accounts through the student portal to see what library materials they have checked out and when they are due. We are happy to renew books once or even twice if they are not needed for our reservation list.

It was a great honor to host our own CHS alumni authors, Sean Bloomfield and Colton Witte, for an author visit before the Holidays. The first-time authors gave an outstanding presentation, time for questions and answers, and signed their books for the audience. The authors were inspired by a book they read in middle school, planned their own adventure as high schoolers, wrote a book and created their own publishing company to chronicle the entire experience.

We have big plans for the upcoming “I Love to Read” Month in February. We will host a fundraiser during February through Titlewish, an online fundraiser where 100% of all donations go directly to purchasing new, great books for our Media Center. Information about how to participate in this fundraiser will be forthcoming. Hawk’s Nest Book Club news: We just finished reading The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough and we are currently reading All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven, the top picks by club members. All students are invited to attend our monthly meetings on the third Tuesday of each month in the Media Center from 7:15 – 7:45 AM. Please see our CHS Media Center web page for news about our book club: http://chs.district112.org/support/media-center/ Stay tuned for news about our plans for Teen Tech Week in March! Please visit the CHS Media Center web page for further information about our online databases, activities, mobile apps, tools for students, or follow us on Twitter @CHSMedia! Thank you for your support of our media program!
