Principal News:

Parent Leadership Council Changing Name to Parent Advisory We are changing the name of our Parent Leadership Council to Parent Advisory. We believe Advisory is a more accurate description of what the committee does with the school. Parent Advisory is a group of parents that meet once a month to provide feedback on school programs, issues, and overall operations. It is a venue for building administration to gather feedback from parents on new initiatives or concerns they may have. The purpose is always to make sure we are working together to provide a safe learning environment for all our students. It takes our whole community working together to make Chaska High School a great learning organization.

No Empower at the High School Level We will not be using Empower at the high school level this year. Teachers who were in Empower last year will be using Infinite Campus. There will be more information coming this fall.

Page 3: Hawk Nest - chs.district112.orgchs.district112.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2019/09/August-2019.docx.pdfWhere: CHS Commons Parents and Guardians for 9th grade and new students can

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION If a college application or scholarship application requires letters of recommendation - and many do not require any at all - most often they are looking for one from a recent core academic teacher (english, science, math, social studies) and/or your counselor. If you do need a letter of recommendation, please make sure to give the writer plenty of time to create the letter and to get it to its destination before the deadline. Many CHS teachers or counselors will ask you to turn in the "SENIOR RECOMMENDATION REQUEST & INFORMATION FORM” which gives them a better idea of who you are outside the classroom. A copy of the form can be found here: https://goo.gl/QMb3F0 This form can also be a good resume template for all students - a good way to keep track of activities, jobs, interests, etc. Although a teacher may return a letter of recommendation to you, typically the letter is submitted without the student seeing it first. Here is a good recommendation letter checklist:

Fill the form out once and make copies if you need to give it to more than one recommender

Give the teacher/counselor at least two weeks’ notice

Fill out and give teacher/counselor completed senior recommendation form

Arrange a pick-up or mail by date

Provide an addressed, stamped envelope if needed

Send a Thank you note to teacher/counselor

TRANSCRIPTS Transcripts can be requested two different ways:

1. www.parchment.com (you will need to set up an account and pay $5.00 per transcript requested).

2. Fill out a “Transcript Request Form” and return it to Cynthia Roper in the Red House Office. (you will need to pay $5.00 per transcript requested).

ACT/SAT Act and SAT tests are offered throughout the year. Students can log on to ACT’s web site, www.actstudent.org to register for their ACT test. To register online for the SAT test students should go to www.collegeboard.com. Students must upload a photo when registering for the ACT or SAT. Students are required to bring their admission ticket and photo id on the test day. No ticket, no photo id, no admission! As a general rule, we recommend that juniors start taking the ACT in the 2nd half of their junior year. However, some students are ready before that time and are certainly welcome to test earlier. One guideline is to wait until the student has either completed or has taken at least one semester of

Notes from the Athletics Office:

ONLINE REGISTRATION FOR ATHLETICS The Chaska High School Athletics Department is excited to continue our support with online registration for the 2019-20 academic year. Chaska High School offers over 30 different athletics programs designed to meet the interests of our student body. These programs are an opportunity and a privilege afforded to students in our Chaska school community. Students are strongly encouraged to become active in a variety of activities while attending Chaska High School.

PURPOSE OF ATHLETICS Chaska High School recognizes the value and importance of our athletics programs as an extension of a good educational program. Participation in our athletics programs is a privilege and a valuable part of the overall school experience. It contributes to the emotional, physical, and intellectual development of our students, helping prepare them to become productive, contributing citizens of their community.

BELIEFS We believe that:

Athletics is part of our educational program. It should be FUN!

Athletics must teach positive values: fair play, good sportsmanship, pride in self, team and school.

Participation in athletics is important. Multi-sport participation is encouraged and supported.

A comprehensive athletics program offering will support and reflect student interest and participation.

Athletics should encourage athletes to stretch beyond their comfort zone, taking risks within a structured environment.

Athletics enhances physical and mental well-being.

Page 11: Hawk Nest - chs.district112.orgchs.district112.org/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2019/09/August-2019.docx.pdfWhere: CHS Commons Parents and Guardians for 9th grade and new students can

Meaningful competition is healthy.

A sound athletics program stimulates participants to win and excel, recognizing our purpose is human growth and potential.

Our community values athletics.

Our school community is stronger when we promote healthy relationships through respect for opponents, officials, teammates, self, and for persons in position of authority.

Our Chaska Hawks compete in the Metro West Conference and are members of the Minnesota State High School League. Ads for Grads are due January 3, 2020 for the 2020 graduates Every year, the yearbook staff sponsors a fundraiser. You may choose to submit an Ad for Grad as part of the celebration for your senior. These advertisements are a unique part of the yearbook in that they add a very personal, heart-felt touch to your senior’s yearbook by looking back on their early years. An Ad for Grad is a wonderful way to say something important to your son or daughter – such as some sound advice or just how much you love them – before he or she graduates from CHS. All proceeds from Ads for Grads go back to the Hawk to help supplement the costs of the yearbook. All Ads will be paid and submitted online to Jostens. Shop the collection at jostensadservice.com and select Yearbook Recognition Ad for $35 for 1/8 of a page or $65 for a 1/4 of a page. Call 1-800-358-0800 for customer service.
