Dear Congregants
The AA Rabbinical Search Committee would like to inform you that we will be hosting three rabbinical candidates
for our congregation during the next month. Each rabbi offers very special talents and we believe each would be a
good fit for our synagogue. Your thoughts and concerns are vitally important for us to make this decision so please
plan on attending. Here are the dates:
Rabbi Judith Beiner March 10-11, 2017
Rabbi Daniel Wolpe March 24-25, 2017
We will send you more information about each rabbi in the very near future, as well as an itinerary of events for each
weekend. You also will receive an online survey at the conclusion of each weekend and again after all three rabbis
have been to Savannah. We are very happy to move forward in this process and we hope you will all take part in this
very important opportunity for our congregation. Please make every effort to meet each of these rabbinical
candidates.
We also wanted to remind you all that these rabbis are interviewing us as well. We ask that you share stories about
why you love our synagogue and our community and be as positive as you can be. The candidates know that
Savannah is a small city and they are all looking to make a difference as they move forward in their careers. We are
very excited about these opportunities for you to meet and greet each rabbi.
Thanking you all in advance for your participation.

Good afternoon fellow members. February proved to be a very busy month at Agudath
Achim. We had a scholar in residence weekend, our SCAD/HILLEL Friday night service
and dinner, our progressive dinner, and we concluded our draft of our synagogue's 3 year
plan. We also confirmed dates for 3 Rabbinical candidates to visit us. Our adult education
classes continued with good enrollment. Lastly, Ronnie Ginsberg’s Wednesday sessions
with breakfast continued with 20 people or more attending.
March looks to be busier than February. March 5 brings us the Larry Lasky golf tournament
at the Landings. In addition, March 11 is the Back Pack Buddies Shabbat with services and
Kiddush luncheon honoring its over 40 volunteers. Also March brings us weekend visits
from 3 of our visiting Rabbis to lead services and meet with our fellow congregants. March
3/4 brings us Rabbi Steven Henkin for the weekend. The weekend of March 10/11 brings
us Rabbi Judith Beiner. Finally, we are privileged to host for the weekend of March 24/25
Rabbi Daniel Wolpe to conduct services and meet us. Also a special Friday night Shabbat
dinner catered by Tom Rosen and Elise Shernoff is planned for March 31. In addition, we
are Skyping 4 May graduates of the RA who chose us as their preferred choice of pulpits.
Perhaps we will have more weekend visits after the Skype. To be announced.
All adult education continues and Ronnie Ginsberg continues to request your presence at
his Wednesday morning service, breakfast, and educational experience with Motti.
We continue to have quorums at Board meetings, and good participation at committee
meetings. Both of which have consistency.
Folks, the staff and lay leaders are working hard and with your best interest in mind. We are
making progress on financial matters and with the Rabbi search. Please, be a part. Come to
meetings and events which interest you. Our doors are open for you.
As always my best wishes,
Your President,
Victor Shernoff

Hamentaschen: our victory over a bully.
For some of us, eating hamentaschen on Purim is close to a Mitzvah! While this cookie is only a
tradition that we can’t to do without, it has nothing to do with the four Mitzvot required to do on
Purim: reading the Megillah, the festive meal, the gifts to the poor and the mischloah manot. Since at
Shalom School we always look for hands-on projects, baking hamentaschen with the students is
always an exciting time. And every year, the question of the shape comes up: is this cookie this way
because of Haman’s hat or Haman’s ears?
The story of the megillah is one of victory but also a real modern day lesson: Haman, the king’s
prime minister, expects all to bow to him and while Jews are fine bowing to a representative of the
monarchy, Mordechai has an issue bowing to someone who is also a tyrant and a brutal dictator. In
today's world: a real bully.
Mordechai is not the only one to rebel. In her own way, Esther risks her life when actively plotting
against Haman. She is showing up before the king without being invited and that alone is a passible
of death. But that doesn’t stop our princess on her quest to stop the bully and she takes control of the
situation by pushing the king to ask questions and investigate Haman.
Meantime Haman continues in is evil plan and he convinces the Persian people to join him in killing
all the Jews in one single day, the 13th of the month of Adar. The Jews, maybe inspired by
Mordechai’s and Esther’s heroism, did not sit still: they gathered to take arms and fight the Persians
back.
Three resistance steps to the bully, each heroic, courageous and necessary: standing up to Haman to
alert higher authority, to bring others to question the bully’s integrity (and intellect) and to take
actions. All steps that are part of a modern anti-bully campaign.
The question of the hamentaschen’s shape is still on the table: hat or ears? Whatever the answer is,
the important thing is that our children always remember to refuse to take a bully seriously and that
laughter is the best medicine to such a trauma. By humoring Haman’s hat or ears we are establishing
the victory of the good against the evil: our children’s laughter is our revenge on Haman and that
alone is worth devouring any flavored hamentaschen!
Wishing you Purim Sameah

How do I Send a Mitzvah-Gram? Here are 4 simple steps to do this:
1 Print out the Mitzvah-Gram page from the current HaYom newsletter with the list of people celebrating a birthday or
anniversary in February.
2 Circle the names of all those people to whom you would like to send a Happy Birthday or Happy Anniversary greeting.
3 Mail or deliver your list, along with your check made out to Agudath Achim Sisterhood for $.50 for each circled name, to
Barbara Abrams, 24 Raindrop Lane, Bluffton, S.C. 29909, or leave your list and check in the synagogue office.
4 Make sure to include your name(s) the way you want it (them) listed.
In order for your birthday and anniversary greetings to be delivered in a timely manner, everyone needs to turn in April’s Mitzvah-Gram
sheet by the 15th of March.
If you have any questions about this project, please contact me at [email protected], or at (843) 705-3723 or (843) 290-3995.
Thanks to everyone for participating in this exciting program.
