THE COMMUNICANT Dear Christ Church, You might want to call this “the picture issue.” Since I came to Christ Church I have gathered a few, which I include in this edition. Is Christ Church Episcopal “picture perfect?” Hardly. But there is joy here among those who remain active in this parish and care for its future. I am grateful for the leadership and commitment I see in so many of you. Leadership is truly a gift of the Spirit, expressed by each of us in different and influential ways. Melannie Svaboda, Provincial Superior of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Chardon, Ohio, offers some insights on leadership that are worth considering: Leadership is the capacity to influence others for the better. There are various forms of leadership, executive, administrative, charismatic, to name of few. Each type has both positive and negative aspects. The type that is best for a particular group will vary according to time, place, circumstances. Exercising leadership is not the same as exercising authority. Richard McCormick, SJ, once said, “One can command all day without being a leader for a minute.” We can be a leader without wearing a clergy collar, carrying a crosier, banging a gavel, or sitting behind a desk. Parents are leaders. Choir members are leaders. All Christians, by virtue of their baptism, are called to leadership. Jesus had revolutionary ideas about leadership: At the Last Supper, he gave us a memorable picture of the type of leadership he was calling for. Wrapping a towel around his waist and kneeling down, he began to wash the feet of his disciples. Lead- ership for Jesus was never about privilege, it was always about service. The poet William Butler Yeats wrote, “The real leader serves truth, not people.” In other words, good leaders resist the temptation to merely please people. The writer Patricia Leimbach describes seeing a flock of migrating geese one fall af- ternoon. The sight evoked in her a reflection on leadership. She asked herself, “How would I choose a head goose if I were a goose and obliged to choose?” She answers, “I should certainly want to follow the wisest goose, the one with a sense of good his- tory… I should want a compassionate goose… I would want a leader who saw that we didn’t eat so richly and so long that we could no longer fly.” Leimbach then con- cludes, “The most important question to consider in choos- ing a head goose: Is she or he headed in the right direction?” continued on p. 2 Of Special Interest: Priest-in-Charge cont. Melannie Svaboda, Provincial Superior of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Chardon, Ohio, offers some insights on leadership that are worth considering:

Leadership is the capacity to influence others for the better.

There are various forms of leadership, executive, administrative, charismatic, to name of few. Each type has both positive and negative aspects. The type that is best for a particular group will vary according to time, place, circumstances.

Exercising leadership is not the same as exercising authority. Richard McCormick, SJ, once said, “One can command all day without being a leader for a minute.”

We can be a leader without wearing a clergy collar, carrying a crosier, banging a gavel, or sitting behind a desk.

Lead-ership for Jesus was never about privilege, it was always about service.

The poet William Butler Yeats wrote, “The real leader serves truth, not people.” In other words, good leaders resist the temptation to merely please people.

The writer Patricia Leimbach describes seeing a flock of migrating geese one fall af-ternoon. The sight evoked in her a reflection on leadership. She asked herself, “How would I choose a head goose if I were a goose and obliged to choose?” She answers, “I should certainly want to follow the wisest goose, the one with a sense of good his-tory… I should want a compassionate goose… I would want a leader who saw that we didn’t eat so richly and so long that we could no longer fly.” Leimbach then con-cludes, “The most important question to consider in choos-ing a head goose: Is she or he headed in the right direction?”

The Acme Fresh Market Community Cash Back Program in Hudson has sent us a check in the amount of $143.30. Acme generously sponsors a receipt collection program each year during which parishioners save qualifying receipts and bring them to the Acme box in Parish Hall to ‘cash in.’ The proceeds of our 2011-2012 Campaign will go to OPEN M. The 2012-2013 Cash back Program begins on Septem-ber 22, 2012.

What direction is Christ Church Episcopal headed in? Your vestry — as the elected leadership — is answering that question, as should all active members of this parish who care for our future, our service in the community and our presence in Hudson and the larger church. In my experience the healthiest parishes are those that engage in a shared ministry where clergy and laity function as part of an interdependent team and seek to engage a large number of people in a variety of leadership roles. I would like to see that at Christ Church once again and I sense you do to. A shared ministry promotes the best use of everyone’s gifts and skills and strengthens the overall leadership of the congregation. A number of you have taken on responsibilities over the past several months through Parish Care, Ministry Nights, communication, to name just a few. This kind of organic growth is wonderful to see. I will continue to support your efforts in all the ways that I can. One of the vows I took at ordination was to be “...a faithful pastor to all I serve, laboring together... to build up the family of God.” (BCP p. 532) Christ Church Episcopal is the family of God, and it is wise to always be asking, “What direction are we headed in?”

Gracious God, we pray for your Church. Fill it with all truth, in all truth with all peace.

Where it is corrupt, purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is amiss, reform it.

Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it;

for the sake of Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. Amen.

Your sister in Christ, Marie +

Ministry Nights Resume!

Communication

Tuesday, May 1st, 7:00 p.m. Christ Church Chapel They’re back! And we want to begin with a celebration! Everyone is invited to attend a reception to honor the work of ministries at Christ Church on Tuesday, May 1, at 7 p.m. We will worship together, enjoy dessert and coffee, and hear a brief update of vestry's goals for the year. Please RSVP to Pam Zuhl (330-650-5754 or [email protected]) if you are able to attend. We hope to see you there.

Did you know Joyce Harrison has been working on Christ Church’s own Facebook page? She’s just gotten started, but it is out there. In addition, Reed Stith and Rose-mary DuMont are bringing our parish website up-to-date. This small group has begun an incredibly important ministry for the marketing and visibility of our par-ish. We are looking for a parish photographer to capture the people, life, and en-thusiasm that is here to include pictures on both the website and Facebook. If you are interested, let Reed know. A Communications Committee will be forming to continue this important work. If you would like to be a part of this, stay tuned for more information/announcements in Church.

Confirmation & Inquirers Class

Parents can only give

them good advice and

lead them on the right

paths, but the final

forming of a person’s

character lies in their

own hands.

Anne Frank

Our confirmation class is just about over for this spring. Confirm not Conform is a 16 week program. However, two students, David McCallops and Nate Wirtz, will be graduating this year and are hoping to be confirmed before they go off to college. Marie will be discussing that possibility and readiness with David, Nate and their families. Christ Church is not scheduled for a Bishop’s visitation until this fall, so we will consider the possibility of joining a neighboring parish with a Bishop’s visitation scheduled so that Nate and David can reaffirm their faith as adults and receive the laying on of hands by the Bishop.

Confirmation classes will continue in the fall for the remainder of this class—a great group of young adults who have engaged openly and honestly about their faith and values. Those involved and not pictured are Vanessa Nawn, Elise Agnor and Jacob Lisic. Those pictured are Sara Dieter, Lane Hedler, Nate Wirtz, Robby Gray, David McCallops, Charlie Murray, Rob Dieter, Lillian Carter, Megan Girvin, Lindsey Wirtz, Virginia Carter and Anne Greer. Erin Odell (bottom left) will begin marriage preparation along with her husband-to-be, Rich King. Their wedding is scheduled at Christ Church for Saturday, November 3, 2012. On Sunday, June 3rd at the 10:00 a.m. Eucharist (summer service time) Christ Church will celebrate all our graduating high school seniors.

God our Father, you see your children growing up in an unsteady and confusing world:

Show them that your ways give more life than the ways of the world, and that following you is better than chasing after selfish goals.

Help them to take failure, not as a measure of their worth, but as a chance for a new start.

Give them strength to hold their faith in you, and to keep alive their joy in your creation;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Home of Hope

With the help of Susan Mailey, Christ Church Episcopal welcomed Elvis Donkoh from Ghana on Sunday, April 22nd. Elvis’ life of commitment to his people was inspiring and we are grateful to have heard of the deep needs in Ghana. Thank you to Susan and Elvis, and may his relationships in Hudson prove to be compassionate to and financially supportive of his mission.

You can donate to Children’s Home of Hope by making your check out to The Orphan’s Prayer with Children’s Home of Hope in the memo line. Drop off your check at the Christ Church office or mail directly to :

The Orphan’s Prayer P.O. Box 1150

Hudson, Ohio 44236

Or you can make your donation online at TheOrphansPrayer.org

Fern Daly is the new Flower Guild Chair, the successor of Lis Hugh. The Flower Guild provides a beautiful service to Christ Church, exemplifying the creativity, esthetic and stewardship that are the cornerstone of the Episcopal tradition. If you are wanting to learn the art of flower arranging, this group of women (and man—always accepting more) is a great community in which to learn. Also, remember you support this ministry by signing up for Sunday flowers. The sign up is on the doors in Parish Hall. You may sign up for either the 8:00 service ($40) or the 10:30 service ($60). There is a card to fill in with your contribution request.

2012 Bishop’s Bike Ride

The 2012 Bishop's Bike Ride route is almost set. The dates are June 25 (Monday evening) through June 30 (Saturday noon). The change in the usual schedule allows the riders to arrive in Wakeman, Ohio, proposed site of a new Camp and Retreat Center, in time for a diocesan-wide picnic on Sat-urday. In addition to the picnic, we will be cele-brating the 25th anniversaries of Bishop Bow-man and Bishop Williams' Episcopal ordina-

tions. If you haven't participated in the Bishop's Bike Ride—as rider, SAG driver, or host—please consider joining this wonderful event to get to know people from around the diocese. Our plan is to start from Boardman on Tuesday, June 26, then ride to Canton, to Coshocton, to Mount Vernon, to Ashland, and end in Wakeman, although those stops may vary a bit. The daily rides will again be between 45 and 55 miles, except for the last day, which will be about 30 miles. The beginning of the ride will be a little hillier than it has been in the past two years, but we've also made those days shorter to accommodate a slower pace on the hills. Everyone is invited to ride all or part of the Bishop's Bike Ride. We will also need six to seven SAG vehicle drivers, who carry the gear and provide sustenance and help along the way. Sign-up via Eventbrite. If you have questions or want an early sign-up call or email Martha Wright (216-774-0456) or [email protected] or Karyn Calaway (216-774-0462); [email protected] .

Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori will conduct a conversation about mission with Archbishop Desmond Tutu in a live webcast on Saturday, May 19 at 3:30 pm Eastern time. Hosted by Washington National Cathedral, the event will be moderated by David Crabtree, news anchor at WRAL-TV in North Carolina and an ordained deacon.

The live webcast will be available at no fee on the website of the Episcopal Church www.episcopalchurch.org and will be available on demand afterwards.
