The School of Nursing

We are one of the largest Schools of Nursing in the UK delivering teaching, research and knowledge exchange, with over 1,700 students and130 staff.

Building on our long history of delivering nurse education, we are a forward-thinking School with a track record of exploring new opportunities, as part of an overall aim to advance nursing excellence at every level.

This is an opportunity to lead a large School supported by a strong, supportive leadership team made up of four deputy heads covering business, partnerships, students and teaching, Pre-registration Nursing education, research, and work-based learning. We have a long-established service user engagement framework through COMENSUS.

You’ll benefit from our strong internal formal and informal Head of School network, with broader university Management Team engagement. And there is a wide variety of support from across university services through a Business Partner model.

Our internationally renowned Stroke Research Team is led by Professor Dame Caroline Watkins.

• Lancashire Clinical Trials Unit (LCTU) – provisional registration with UKCRC. • Research Institute for Global Health and Wellbeing – LIFE is one of five university funded

research institutes. • Links with NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North West Coast (NIHR ARC NWC) and

emerging formal research links with local partners through joint posts.

Democratic Mental Health led by Mick McKeown consistently supports public engagement initiatives, largely in the field of health and social care and in North West Coastal ARC mental health activities.

Philosophy and Mental Health led by Tim Thornton, a widely published international expert in this expanding field, whose research concerns conceptual issues at the heart of mental health care.

Job Purpose: As a member of the Faculty’s Executive Team and wider University management in conjunction with the Executive Dean you will: - Lead on the formulation, advancement and effective implementation of strategy and policy

in areas of responsibility to support the achievement of objectives and key performanceindicators in line with the University’s strategy, mission, aims and direction;

- Lead on enhancing and continually improving the quality of delivery and the curriculumacross the School’s academic portfolio;

- Effectively and efficiently deploy the School’s human, financial and physical resources;- Create and exemplify a culture of high performance and inclusion within the School,

Faculty and wider University;- Implement change and continuous improvement drawing on effective leadership and

management approaches;- Engage with managers across the University’s academic and professional services and

partnerships in effective communication of practice.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Provide strong, collaborative, academic leadership for the School; foster and promotethe advancement of teaching and learning, research and innovation and enterprisewithin the School;

2. Effectively deploy human, financial and physical resources, workload allocation andcompliance with quality, regulatory and governance frameworks;

3. Lead the academic and curriculum development of the School, ensuring that coursecontent is challenging and current, utilises innovative methods of delivery andfacilitates employability, enterprise, widening participation and inclusion;

4. Performance manage and develop staff within the School maximising potential andengagement with University and School objectives in a culture of high performance;

5. Manage School marketing and communication mechanisms, ensuring objectives forstudent recruitment and retention are delivered and implement processes to enhanceactivities with regards to the student experience and success;

6. Initiate and foster links with professional/industry bodies and other key stakeholdersensuring effective representation of the School’s interests and reputation externally;

7. Contribute to the identification and development of opportunities to diversify andgenerate income;

8. As an academic leader, support the formal performance management and grievanceprocesses for staff outside the School;
