REMINDER OF SCHOOL PROCEDURES
We remind parents that parking on the school site at the start or end of
the school day is restricted. Please drive slowly when approaching school
and only park in designated areas. The reason for this is to ensure that
all pedestrians are safe and reduce traffic during very busy times.

START AND END OF THE DAY TO GUIDE TRANSPORT PLEASE CO-
OPERATE AT ALL TIMES.
Pupils are required to wear full school uniform. Please ensure that your
child is dressed appropriately when they come to school.
If you have time during your busy summer break please go on the
OFSTED website- www.ofsted.gov.uk- “parent view” and give your views
about North Ridge. You will need to register with your email address.
This will help the school. Your support would be appreciated.
I wish you all a happy and stress free summer!! School reopens on

Class Nightingale pupils have finished their third and final placement of
the year at the Hospital Supported Internship. All the NHS Staff that
have worked alongside the students are going to miss them when they
leave for college next year. Pupils have worked very hard learning and
developing new skills for the work place for their future jobs.
Good luck to all the pupils in Class Nightingale as they move onto college.
We are all proud of your hard work and success this year.
We have had another great year at our Supported Internship and Class

Class Hillary During this half term we have been
looking at Myths and Legends. We
looked at the story of Tiddalik the Frog
and Robin Hood.
We acted out being Tiddalik and tried
to make each other laugh.
We made wanted posters for the
capture of Robin Hood. We all had a fab
time during sports
week! We took part
in the main events
and enjoyed
competing in the
gym challenge.
In Maths we have been learning about co-ordinates. We made a grid on the
floor and had to give directions to class friends to follow.
Have a fantastic summer!

We made a traditional peasant stew with
vegetables and oats, some of us found it
delicious, but not everyone was a fan!
In history we have been learning all about
Medieval Britain. We went on a trip to Ordsall
Hall where we discovered lots about life in the
Middle Ages - it was great fun.
In DT some of the class have been
learning all about different types of
kites. We have designed and made our
own kites—including these traditional
Japanese carp kites. Our English topic has been Myths and
Legends. We have been reading and acting
out different stories including The Sword in
the Stone. We had to use different voices
for our characters and clear body language.
Have a great summer!

Class Fiennes have had a fantastic Summer
Term. We have all worked very hard and
produced some lovely work.
Our English topic was Harry Potter and the
News. We really enjoyed writing creatively
and descriptively about the characters,
writing newspaper articles and acting out
scenes and news reports.
In history, we have been learning about what
life was like in medieval times. We went to
Orsdall Hall to experience a medieval
banquet and a day in the life of a Lord and a
servant. Class Fiennes won the Mountain
Group Behaviour Award for the
Summer Term. As a reward, we
spent the day at the Factory
Youth Zone. We had a fantastic
day. The students had the
opportunity to try rock climbing,
trampolining, the inflatable
tumble track and cooking. The
students thoroughly enjoyed the
day and their behaviour was
excellent.
The staff and students in Class Fiennes wish you a lovely summer holiday!

This term Class Bonington have been learning about what life was like at
Quarry Bank Mill. Key Stage 4 visited Quarry Bank Mill where they discovered
how cotton was made. They also had an insight into what school and home life
was like for the children at the mill, over 200 years ago. It wasn’t very nice!
KS4 presented an ‘Arts Award
Showcase’ for parents/carers. They
performed several drama acts,
dances and even some singing! It
was a huge success. Well done to
the Arts Award group!
Class Bonington also volunteered at
Manchester’s ‘Tri-Golf’ competition
where they worked as leaders and
helped KS2/KS3 pupils. The class
were assigned to specific stations
where they supported others.

Class Armstrong, along with all of Key Stage 4, visited Quarry Bank Mill
this half term. We have been learning about what life would have been
like at Quarry Bank Mill and why the site at Styal was chosen as a cotton
Mill approximately 200 years ago.
We all thoroughly enjoyed the trip and we were able to see how raw
cotton was spun into thread and then used to produce cloth. We also
visited the apprentice house and saw how girls and boys would have lived
and worked at Quarry Bank Mill. We decided that our lives now are much
better than a 12 hour day in the mill!
On behalf of all the staff and students in Class Armstrong we would like
to wish you a lovely summer holiday.

For this terms super learning day
we have been learning all about
British Values! We decided what
made us feel proud to be British
as well as what made us feel
proud to be human. We also made
our own Union Jack and we
listened to some classic British
music.
This year sports week was super exciting. We took
part in Table Cricket as well as Capoeira. We enjoyed
joining the rest of the school on the AstroTurf and
taking part in the Hurdles and Relay Races. We also
had fun trying our best at the Long Jump and the
Javelin.

We have really enjoyed this year in class
MacArthur!
This summer term, we have been
investigating a ‘crime’ at North Ridge.
We observed, recorded and described
evidence using our English skills then
passed this onto the Police!
We have also been using our mathematical skills
in ‘Grow-it’ to record how successful our
pumpkin plants were. We really enjoyed taking
measurements of the heights of our plants as
well as counting the number of leaves.
In history we learned about the
horrible conditions during medieval
times. We also cooked a very bland
stew with vegetables like they would
have.

Class Tenzing
English
This term in English we have learned about
different job roles in our community. We
dressed up as the different people that help
us and took part in role play activities.
We also interviewed adults around school to
find out information about their jobs.
Creative Skills
In creative skills we have made our own musical instruments.
Pupils made ‘pizza box guitars’ and ‘ocean drums’, they carefully used recycled
materials and were very happy once they were completed. Pupils used their
instruments as props when taking part in a role play scenario based on an
English story called ‘Rabbityness’ by Jo Espom.

Science
In Science this half term pupils have been separating a
variety of ingredients. Pupils separated and filtered
solids and liquids using a range of materials and observed
the changes happening.
Health and Fitness
This year we have focused on making healthy choices. We try to make
healthy food choices for our snack and lunch each day. We also visit
the school gym on a regular basis; we really enjoy doing our exercises
to our favourite music!

Sports week All of class Vancouver enjoyed taking part in lots of activities throughout
sports week. We started the week off with the opening ceremony where we got to parade
the flags we made for our chosen country Cuba. We had our photograph taken with the
city capital one cup; we learnt new, exciting skills during a capoeira workshop, we worked
really hard completing the gym challenge and finished the week off with a brilliant sports
day!
Vancouver came 2nd on sports day, well done everyone!
In History we have been learning about Quarry Bank Mill and on
Monday 4th July Classes Vancouver, Armstrong and Bonington went to visit Quarry Bank
Mill. We were able to take a tour of the factory and learn all about how cotton was made
and the different roles that people had within the factory. We saw all the different
machines and were given a demonstration of how they work. We also got to see the
apprentice house and how the children lived. Everyone involved had a great day and the
students were able to experience what life was like at Quarry Bank Mill.
Well done class Vancouver for all of your hard work over the year!
We hope you have a lovely holiday! Miss Harris, Miss Scott and Mrs Graham.

The Path of the Remembered
To commemorate the 100th anniversary of The Battle of the Somme
each pupil in Class Ross designed a tile for the Path of the
Remembered at Heaton Park. The pupils drew images from the First
World War and dedicated each of their tiles to a soldier from the
Manchester Regiments.

Sixth Form have had a very busy term
- from work experience at the café
(where we have been having some of
our busiest days on record); to an
action packed sport’s week. We
would like to thank you for all your
support with the café and the shop;
we appreciate every visit and
donation!
Sixth Form have taken part in this year’s sports
week. Everyone (including staff) have taken
part. We had a few students who really shone;
Ikra won the whole school gym challenge by
travelling the furthest 6.4Km in 20 minutes!
Well done Ikra! Sixth Form as a whole also won
at Table Cricket. A massive well done to
everyone for taking part and putting so much
effort in!
Sixth Form are continuing to
volunteer at North
Manchester General
Hospital. Our students really
enjoy visiting the wards,
talking to patients and
selling snacks off the trolley.
This is vital experience
improving our students
social and employability
skills.
We would like to give a
special mention and a big
thank you to Christopher
and Callum who spent the
day volunteering.

Grow it!
.
Maintaining a vegetable plot is tough stuff! We have had teams of pupils
doing everything from weeding, fending off the bugs and making
wormeries. This half term has also seen the launch of two competitions:
the pupils have had fun creating scarecrows made to look like their class
teacher & the sunflower competition has stirred passion into gardening
from the most unlikely suspects! With the prize being mini gardening sets
for classes it’s no wonder people are so driven.
We have also been able to provide the first of many vegetable and herb
boxes (pictured above) to the school café Cup & Cake! I can’t wait to see
what delicious treats they make with it all!

Sports Relief 2016
The pupils who are working towards their Bronze Duke of
Edinburgh award arranged a fun day for all the pupils to raise
money for Sports Relief 2016.
The day consisted of a sponsored run, wear your sports kit to
school and the highlight - sponge the teachers!
Class ran laps of the school to raise money, and paid to wear
none uniform. Leandro Martin recorded the most individual lap
count with 8 laps, while the staff are still debating as to who
won their race.
During dinnertime was the pupil’s highlight of the day. Mr
Mullineux, Mr Errock, Mr Smith and Mrs Roberts were voted
for by the pupils to have wet, cold, soggy sponges thrown at
them! They worked really hard at this and for some reason
really enjoyed it!
Through all the hard work by all the pupils who organised the
day and the pupils who took part we were able to raise £630.
Well done everyone!!

Sports Week 2016
All our fingers were crossed for a week of good weather (and we just about got away
with it!) Sports week started off with two events; interclass cricket and interclass
table cricket. With ferocious competition the cricket got under way and the day was
spent on a series of close run fixtures. Pupils showed off their batting, bowling and
fielding skills with class Flinders coming out as the champions. At table cricket the
aim was to score as many points as possible - Sixth Form were the winners!
The opening ceremony took place on Tuesday morning and pupils carried in their
countries flags and repeated the athlete oaths, all supported by Mr Rogers band and
the North Ridge Games Anthem. This was followed by Capoeira classes (Capoeira is
a Brazilian martial art performed like a dance so no contact is made.) Capoeira was a
new activity for everyone in school - staff enjoyed it as much as the pupils! Our
experiential classes began their triathlon with the swim section. This involved pupils
working as a team to swim four lengths of the pool, then walk or run 200 metres and
then a wheelchair push of the same distance.
Later in the week Manchester City Football Club attended school with the Capital
One Cup, allowing pupils to have their pictures taken with the trophy. (If you would
like a copy of your child with the trophy please put a note in their planner). Pupils
also participated in the Gym Challenge. This event allowed each class 20 minutes to
travel as far as possible on the gym equipment, with sixth form again taking the gold
medal.

The café has gone from strength to
strength in the past year. Students can
work independently in several roles
including barista, front of house, serving
customers, cleaning and taking on
supervisory roles. We have been
receiving excellent customer feedback.
We are now looking at branching out
further into catering events at the
Abraham Moss Centre. We’ll be closing
our doors on the 21st July for the
summer holidays and reopening at the
start of the next academic year on the
12th September with our new team of
students ready to take on the challenge
of working at Cup and Cake. We look
forward to seeing you there next year!
2ND HAND MADE is also providing
students with great opportunities to
learn retail skills. We sell lovely
handmade items such as Eid cards,
personalised plaques, and pre-loved
clothing. The shop is situated next door
to the café so please come and visit us!

Attendance
This term pupils have been continuing to work hard to come into school on
time, every day. Pupils who have reached 100% attendance and have
shown improved attendance will receive an individual attendance
certificate, a whole class attendance certificate (where appropriate) and
an individual termly reward.
Teachers continue to work hard on a daily basis as well as through the
PSHE curriculum to support our young people to understand the
importance of attending school on time every day. At North Ridge we
work collaboratively with our parents and our Parent Support Advisor,
Ruth Jones, to maintain strong supportive relationships.
Parents have a responsibility to make sure their child is in school every
day and non-emergency appointments are taken out of school hours. If
appointments are made in school, parents have a responsibility and duty
of care to bring their child back into school to continue with their
education. We work with our parents advising on the best strategies to
do this as well as directing parents to the school policy and guidelines on
taking pupils out of school.
Every class have been working hard to achieve all their targets to earn
points for their mountain groups. Classes have been paired up together to
create 8 different mountain groups… a remainder of these groups are,
Ben Nevis, Everest, K2, McKinley, Scafell, Snowdon, Eiger and the
Matterhorn. This terms winners are Everest which is class Henson and
Fiennes. Well done!!!! They will have a full day out of class as a reward
trip.

From September 2015 to the end of the summer term we have four
pupils who have maintained their 100% target
These pupils will be entered into a prize draw at the end of the year.
Congratulations and keep up the good work
Remember you have to
