Mayan headdresses, feathers, robes and dancers greeted IIE President Roman Hlutkowsky on June 7. IIE put on an extravagant welcoming reception for attend- ees of the IIE Annual Conference and Expo 2010. The reception featured an eye-popping performance of a Mayan ceremony that included Hlutkowsky, who sat on the main stage, robed and masked, at the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach Hotel in Cancún, Mexico. Hlutkowsky, senior vice president of human resources for FedEx Ground, called it an honor to celebrate IIE’s annual conference with such a thrilling ceremony. “I felt bad for the four performers tasked with lifting and carrying me to the stage,” he joked. “I was able to see the entire performance on the stage monitor through the mask. It was very energizing and exciting. The performers did a terrific job, and the audience was very engaged in the performance.” Attendees took part in more than 100 applied solutions presentations and more than 750 research presentations. They learned tools and techniques to incorporate forever into their professional lives. They commented on the vast networking opportunities that let them connect with new people or recon- nect with friends, colleagues and IIE members. And the location, the gorgeous beach resort of Cancún, Mexico, was loved by all. Hlutkowsky said IIE’s first conference in Mexico was a success and that members can look forward to more confer- ences in international locations. And it’s never too early to prepare for IIE’s next annual conference, scheduled May 21-25, 2011, in Reno, Nev. Attendees had more than 750 research presentations and 100 applied solutions presentations to choose from. Applied solutions sessions let industry leaders deliver methods that have proven results, tools and ideas that attendees took back to their companies. Research presentations let professors and industry researchers share their latest research.
