Year 9 and 10 Sports Day Results




Celebrating the Start of Summer On Thursday 25th June, our Creative Arts team staged a concert, under Head of Music, Vic Chapman's direction, to celebrate the start of summer.

The sell-out event drew together the musical talents of our choirs, orchestras, samba band, small ensembles and soloists, alongside students from Ben Rhydding School and Ashlands School. The concert opened with Razzmatazz (Ashlands) performing ‘In the Mood’ and ‘Smoke on the Water’ followed by ethereal renditions of ‘The Lark in the Clear Air’ and ‘Shenandoah’ by the senior choir (led by Eileen Murray).

With musical pieces following from the super talented Anthony Gray on piano, samba band and funky flutes, the Transition Choir (comprising students from Ben Rhydding and Ashlands) brought the concert to its interval with a fabulous version of ‘Food, Glorious, Food’.

The concert moved from orchestral hits such as ‘The Hall of the Mountain King’ to more contemporary tunes with songs from Katy Perry and Pharell Williams. This included solos and group numbers and slick performances from the Wind Quartet and the Saxophone Quartet.

After a rousing rendition of ‘Skyfall’ by the Showstoppers Choir, the concert came to an end with a rendition of Milhaud’s ‘First Piano Sonata’ by Anthony Gray (13DGW). The concert was a complete joy. Every musician from Years 3-13 performed with energy, focus and a clear passion for music and pride in being part of the team. The 180 plus audience basked in the glow of this wonderful celebration of young people in our community.

Well done to all our actors and singers who made it through the auditions of our up coming production of Oliver. The final casting decisions were hard to make as the interest in the show was phenomenal and the acting and singing talent at IGS is incredible! The cast list was released last Friday (to a waiting corridor full of budding actors). Next step...rehearsals!

Congratulations to all our rounders players who took part in the Year 9 and 10 Inter Tutor group Competition. Both tournaments were brilliantly competed in glorious weather with the matches finishing:

Year 9: 1st - 9MWC, 2nd - 9HM, 3rd - 9MEK and JB, 5th - 9CW, 6th - 9JP, 7th - 9KL, 8th - 9ALC and 9th-9GPS. Year 10: 1st - 10JI, 2nd - 10LSL, 3rd - 10AHF and CT, 5th - 10HGW, 6th - 10BJS, 7th - 10SMD, 8th - 10LO and 9th - 10JLF.

Well done to all our Ball Girls and Boys who were presented with their Aegon Ilkley Tournament medals this week from representatives from Ilkley Tennis Club. Their dedication, hard work and positive attitude over the week was really appreciated by the club.

Bravo to Alice Wriglesworth (10HGW) and James Flanagan (11PB), both GCSE music students, who have been accepted onto the Yorkshire Young Musician scheme based at the Leeds College of Music after a recent audition.

Alice, a Bassoonist in both the School Senior Orchestra and the Leeds Youth Orchestra, is a very talented student and deserves her place on this prestigious course. James is a fantastic pianist and guitarist and a loyal member of the Senior Orchestra too.

Well done to Ruaridh Mon-Williams (12PC), Jemima Elgood (11VEB), Lucy Haines (11VEB) and Sarah Pickering (11ACD), all Ilkley Harriers runners, who represented England in the U18 International Youth Cup for Mountain Running. The International athletics event took place on Saturday 27th June in Smolyan, Bulgaria. It was Ruaridh’s and Lucy’s second England vest and Jemima and Sarah’s debut appearance for England. The girls’ course covered a distance of 3.6km with the Ilkley Harriers female trio finishing as follows:

Well done to Hetty Shaw (10JLF), Imogen Parton (9JB), Sophia Richards (9JB), Callum Gibbons (9MWC), Alice Chadwick (9JB), Antonia Fern (9MWC), Caitlan Rhodes (9GPS), Imogen Brodaty (9GPS), Esme Pearce (9GPS), Harry Watson (9KL) and Cameron Garner (9JB) who all took part in the Language Perfect Competition, which attracts a worldwide audience. The competition involves over 1,000 schools and 300,000 students from around the world all earning points to learn vocabulary in foreign languages. Our team of linguist achieved some fantastic results. Hettie Shaw came in the top 2% of all competitors from around the world and received a Gold certificate, Caitlan Rhodes came in the top 5% and secured Silver, Antonia Fern came in the top 10% with a Bronze certificate and Sophia Richards in the top 20% receiving a Credit.

Magnificent Mathematicians! After the Intermediate Maths Challenge early this year, six of our students performed so well that they qualified to be amongst the UK participants in the international Maths Kangaroo. From Year 9 Matthew Hall (9CW), Jamie Spiller (9KL) and Sophie Armitage (9JB) qualified for their age category and Matthew even finished amongst the top 25% nationally to receive a merit certificate.

From our amazing Year 11s James Flanagan (11PB), Rebecca Hall (11ACD) and Nathan Spiller (11VEB) all received a merit certificate. An astounding achievement. Well done to them all!

Further congratulations to Jamie Spiller (9KL), Nathan Foster (9MWC), Euan Savage (9HM), Jasper Evans (9HM) who took part in the Edge Hill Mathematics Finals at Edge Hill University, Ormskirk on Wednesday 1st July and came second (The Newton Prize).

This is quite an achievement as it is a national competition which hundreds of schools enter and over several months there are 3 rounds. In the final round today the boys were up against the 30 remaining schools.

As well as solving and presenting some high level maths problems, the boys have been committed enough to give up over a terms worth of lunchtimes (and a few evenings) in order to get this far.

As expected the boys were fantastic ambassadors for our school on what was a very hot day.

The Newton Prize Winners 2015





‘Opening up the Book’ Art Exhibition in Sheffield You know we love celebrating your success in Headline, this week we are also celebrating the achievements of our Reprographics Technician, John Cockshaw. He is making his second foray into Art Curating later this summer by staging a thought-provoking show of internationally acclaimed artists and writers at Bank Street Arts Gallery in Sheffield to run throughout September. The show will form part of a festival of book arts called ‘Opening up the Book’ organised by the gallery with support from Sheffield Hallam University, Arts Council England and other organisations. Within this festival John is independently curating an exhibition titled ‘Evil In The Shining Light’ across two gallery spaces that takes inspiration primarily from the works of JRR Tolkien. The featured artists joining him will be Soni Alcorn-Hender, Tomas Hijo, Jay Johnstone, Tsvetelina Krumova, Ted Nasmith and Katarzyna Chmiel-Gugulska and will display a range of work in lino-print, graphite, paint, photography and calligraphy. In response to the position that much fantasy art is stale, kitsch and garish it is intended that this exhibition will reveal a scholarly and contemporary approach to visualising this genre of Art, specifically focusing on JRR Tolkien’s Middle-earth saga The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit.

Guest contributors include Writer Marcel Aubron-Bülles (thetolkienist.com) and Leeds-based Archaeologist Shaun Richardson who will extend the scholarly content of the show in interesting and unexpected ways. A second element of the exhibition focusses on the moving image and the fantasy/Science Fiction genres combined with the graphic novel book format. In association with Indie publisher Luna Press Publishing John Cockshaw and Writer Robert S. Malan will screen a 12 minute short video collaboration ‘The Sign of the Shining Beast’ at the gallery. This video project has simultaneously been developed as a graphic novel/photography book and is set to be released at a book launch by Luna Press at the Mancunicon Sci-Fi convention, Central Manchester in 2016.

This exhibition will form just one part of a whole three-month festival of book arts in Sheffield and will also coincide with the release of two books this summer that John has been involved in with Canadian-based publisher Oloris Publishing for the past two years: an art volume of his own work and an illustrated book of poetry by Poet Janet Nelson-Alvarez.

Sixth Form Student Leadership Team (SLT) We are really excited to have our first Sixth Form Student Leadership Team in place at Ilkley Grammar School. Mr Washington has been working really closely with members of the Post 16 team to develop leadership which, in addition to this group, also encompasses a team of subject ambassadors who will be learning leaders linked to curriculum areas. Alongside these important roles the application and selection process began for the SLT. We are delighted to have appointed the following Year 12 students to this role:

and in the local community (Presentation evenings, Red Kite Alliance events etc.) The first meeting of the SLT took place on Thursday 2nd July with Chris Washington, Jan Stewart and Sally Bishop, where they were charged with their first group and individual tasks. It was outlined that from September 2016 there will be one Personal Best Time lesson per cycle for all year groups on the timetable which will be an opportunity for all students in all year groups to spend time with their tutor or another member of the teaching/associate staff to develop various skills and take part in a wide range of activities. This innovation is a response to specific student and staff voice suggesting that tutor time was valued but the present slot does not provide an opportunity to do anything really meaningful. For their first task we have asked them to divide into 5 mixed gender groups and link to a specific year group (7, 8, 9, 10 and 12). The group will then consult students in their designated year group and research student voice on how Personal Best Time could be productively used. They will then bring back their findings to the first meeting next term and present them to staff at a training session in September. We have also asked students to look at the values which underpin each year group, and to look for quotes which will effectively demonstrate these. Many other members of the school have also submitted ideas for these, and we will pick the best to display around school. We are really excited about the development of leadership at IGS – watch this space – the potential is endless.

Active Learn Feedback Senior Project Editor Andy Solway and Platform Lead Veronica Cucuiat from Pearsons the publishers, based in Oxford, visited Year 9 students this week to demonstrate the improvements they have made to Active Learn since the students contacted them with feedback. They reported that they 'were impressed by your helpful and highly articulate students'.

'Active Learn', which uses the iPad, has been trialled by students in Key Stage 3 this year to develop writing skills. With the promised improvements, we are looking forward to rolling it out further next year.

Year 8 Belgium Trip The final instalment for the current Year 8 Belgium Trip in October is due by the 10th July 2015. Payments should be made via our Parentpay system.

Inspire me! On 29th June we held a Learning Forum Showcase event which was attended by 60 teachers and 15 students. The focus was on what makes inspirational teaching and learning; the Courtyard Café was decorated with balloons and the bunting was made by the students who had written short pieces about how they have been inspired to learn at IGS.

The students then demonstrated to staff how they like to play games with an educational focus to help them learn and revise in an active way.

The school was also pleased to welcome visiting teachers from South Craven School and Harrogate Grammar School, both partners with IGS in the Red Kite Alliance partnership. Victoria Brides (Head of e-learning) compered a series of inspirational presentations to round off the event in B Hall and Karen Jones (Assistant Head: Learning and Teaching) thanked all the participants for their terrific contribution to the exciting learning experiences at Ilkley Grammar School.
