From the Principal I am often in the fortunate position to observe our staff supporting students in numerous ways outside of the class-room, which is always a great reminder of their level of commitment to the students at the College. Our teachers do not stop working at recess or lunchtime, nor in fact does the close down after the last bell - in many ways it comes to life again as there are homework sessions, support groups, debating, Tournament of Minds rehearsals, rehearsals for productions and performances, parent information sessions, music rehearsals, impromptu interviews, and staff planning sessions. The list could go on but in particular I acknowledge:

The outstanding Junior School Arts Festival so ably organised by Jan Furlan and supported by the JS staff and the Music team.

The success of the three Tournament of Minds Teams in the State Finals. I thank Mel Flower for leading this program and acknowledge Kate Fieldew, Sonya Neal, Sandra Lyle, Gemma Van Cuylenburg and Cynthia Young for the support they gave their teams through the Regionals and then the State finals.

Kirk Skinner and the team of dedicated music staff and students for an outstanding Spring Music Concert, show-ing that our program is improving every single day.

Our students learn so much through being involved, and through being open to the many activities that are offered each term. It has been an extremely busy final few weeks at Newhaven, but I know we wouldn ’t have it any other way. I thank the staff unreservedly for all the opportunities they provide for our students, and I thank the parents who support them, and the students who become involved. I look forward to seeing you at these events. Please note that reception will be closed for the second week of the holidays. If there is an emergency you will be able to email me or your Head of School who will be viewing emails during this time. Term Four is usually a time when movements or relocations are planned, so I remind all families that a Term ’s notice must be given for any student who is to withdrawn from the College. If we do not receive this notice, then a term ’s fees are payable in lieu of notice. Should you be uncertain at the start of term, pending notification of withdrawal will be accepted. Finally I am pleased to report that we are ahead of schedule in relation to our new building plans, and we now have companies tendering for the building projects. I have previously shared the new building plans, but rest assured that the works will also include the widening of our exit to allow for a better traffic flow in and out of the College, and the development includes extensive landscaping. This certainly is an exciting phase in our development. Have a happy and safe holiday everyone. Gea - Principal

Senior School 2017 Captain’s Speeches Twelve prospective College Captains for 2017 made their nomination speeches at the Senior School Assembly on Friday 8 September. Each candidate was asked to deliver a 90 second speech on the topic of “Who or What Inspires You”. The speeches were creatively constructed and well delivered and each student is be congratulated. Delivering a speech like this at an assembly in front of 250 peers and teachers can be an intimidating experience. All the candi-dates handled this task well and impressed the audience with their ideas, enthusiasm and experience. The process for finalising the 2017 College Captains as well as the other 26 leadership positions that make up the Year 12 Cabi-net should be finalised in week two of next term. With the high number of quality candidates and the extensive inter-view process, I am confident that we will have a fantastic Cabinet for 2017. Year 12 Students Year 12 students are looking forward to their final day and Valedictory Dinner on Thursday 20 October. The day be-gins with a family breakfast at 8:15am followed by farewell House assemblies. The Year 12 Presentation Assembly begins at 10:30am followed by photographs on the Pines Lawn at approximately 12:00pm when Year 12 students will be dismissed. The Valedictory Dinner will begin at 6:30pm at the Silverwater Resort in San Remo. Year 12 par-ents are reminded that online ticket sales for the Valedictory Dinner close on Thursday 29 September and the RSVP slip regarding the breakfast and assembly is due by Monday 3 October. We wish the Year 12 students all the best as they enter this final phase of secondary schooling, which includes the trial exams over the holidays and the last few weeks of classes next term. Year 12 Students are ready for Examinations...

Middle School Tournament of Minds State Finals On Sunday 4 September, Fathers’ Day, twenty students from Newhaven College went to La Trobe University in Mel-

bourne to compete in the State Finals for Tournament of Minds. The students were part of three teams – Junior So-cial Science, Senior Social Science, and Senior Science Technology. All three teams performed impressively, and all came away feeling they had done the very best they could. The Secondary Science Technology team were awarded 'Honours', which equates to second place. Our Primary and Secondary Social Science teams were up against some tough competition, and unfortunately did not make the podium. We are very proud of all of the teams for their ap-proach and determination. The judges commented specifically on the excellent teamwork and positive spirit demon-strated by all of the students.

Legacy Public Speaking Preliminary finals for newsletter The Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award is a national competition conducted through Australian secondary schools and colleges for students aged 12 to 14 years. The competition began in Melbourne in 1988 and commenced as a National competition in 1995. The aim of the award is to enhance the oral communication and public speaking skills of 12 to 14-year-old students and to help young people appreciate the ideals of Legacy; voluntary service, caring and comradeship and the need for remembrance.

On Tuesday 6 September Charlotte Brewis went to the Dandenong RSL to represent Newhaven College and the South Gippsland region at the Preliminary Finals for the Junior Legacy Public Speaking Award. Approximately 1500 students participate in this event across Australia. Charlotte spoke about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and was

ultimately declared the winner of this event. From here Charlotte will go on to the State Finals in October, where she will compete for a place in the National Finals to be held at the end of the year. Mel Flower - English and Humanities Teacher Year 9 News Year 9 Community Projects is in full swing. This week a group of Year 9 students took some of the residents of Grif-fiths Point Lodge in San Remo and Grossard Court in Cowes to a “fancy” lunch at Bass McDonalds. Junior School Junior School Arts Festival The Junior School Arts Festival provided the students and teachers with an opportunity to showcase the performing arts program in the Junior School. Many of our students used the evening as an opportunity to play their instrument in front of a big audience. The Junior School Choir performed three pieces that they have been rehearsing through-out the term. The pieces that were performed on Thursday evening were: The Hour That I Like Best - Dan Walker, I Lost My Homework - Marta Keen, Sesere Eyee - Traditional Torres Strait Islander song. I thank all the instrumental teachers and Miss Ferwerda and Mr Moldrich for their efforts. The Arts exhibition this year had a focus on what in-spires the students as artists. Students have been inspired by various artists such as Modigliani, Margaret Preston, Gustav Klimt and of course our visiting artists, Cass Wright, Norma Stack and Janice Orchard. There was also varie-ty in the work displayed as students were encouraged to be original and experiment, hence the variety of shapes and sizes! There were no templates or recipes for a drawing or painting just encouragement to look, imagine and be in-spired! I would like to acknowledge the work, inspiration and guidance of Mrs Jan Furlan our Junior School Art teach-er. Jan is always meticulous with her planning and really encourages the students to be original and to do things their way. The pieces of art displayed were of a very high standard. Congratulations to Jack Farmer in 4R who be-came the inaugural recipient of the Principal’s Award. Year 2 Sleepover The Year 2 Sleepover was a positive experience for our students as an introduction and preparation for future camps. The rain eased and students were able to complete their mini golf at Amaze N ’ Things followed by dinner. Night games were held in the Middle School space before students set up for bed time followed by supper and a movie. Students are commended for their positive and ‘have a go’ attitude and the care they showed one another. My sincerest thanks to all the parents who assisted but in particular, to Rachael Cameron and Tim Newman who stayed overnight and Geoff White for coordinating the games. Thank you also to Mrs Smart and Mr Frederick who helped in the afternoon and to Miss Humble and Ms O’Dempsey for all their organisation and care. Prep Transition We have an exciting transition program for our students coming into Prep in 2017 and certainly hope that many can join us for most of the activities. The activities are key in helping your child to become familiar with the College and the teachers that they will be having next year. Starting school is an important step in your child’s life. The Prep year establishes the foundations for your child’s learning and the Junior School teachers endeavour to ensure that your child’s first school experiences are positive. This is the beginning of a wonderful journey for your children and also the start of strong partnership between home and school. For some of the earlier activities, your child can bring a friend along, so that they can share the experiences and be more confident in this new setting. This may make them feel more comfortable. Only enrolled Preps will be able to join us from 23 November, as this is when we have class and school specific activities scheduled. There will also be sessions for the parents to attend, as it is an expec-tation that parents remain at school during most of the activity time slots. Please see the attached sheet for an out-line of our Prep Transition program.

Music Spring Concert Last Friday night, the collective Newhaven College Music Program showcased an array of talent, ranging from the Junior School String Ensemble, to the Senior VCE Band, at the Annual Spring Concert. The items presented were an amalgamation of works finely-tuned at this year's music camp, where a range of industry professionals worked directly with the students to create spectacular results. At the Spring Concert, students and teachers presented a diverse program. Congratulations to all the Junior stu-dents who performing in their various ensembles, as performing on stage is no mean feat. The Boys’ Vocal Group showcased new and entertaining tunes "with a twist", going the extra mile to revamp their ever-increasing repertoire, with the Girls Vocal Group giving them a run for their money as they performed tunes from musicals such as 'Hairspray'. The Guitar Ensemble presented a stand out performance, with senior students Connor Epifano, Michael Callan and Byron Scothern at the helm, delivering in-your-face rock and roll. Imogen Price continued to amaze with her original compositions. Congratulations go to all students who performed, and we look forward to watching you progress through your years as emerging musicians.

Jake Amy... Intermediate Band…

The Music Department would like to thank all those who came along to watch and support the students, as doing so encourages them through their musical education. We would also like to thank the people "behind-the-scenes", for making the night as successful as it was. Jake Amy & Kayla Egan - Senior School Music Captains

Sport Independent Schools Tag Team Surfing

The girls team won the inaugural Victorian Independent

Schools Tag Team Surfing title on Wednesday 14 Sep-

tember. Sophie Fletcher (Captain), Sage Goldsbury,

Lannia Fostin and Daisy Corbett finished seven points

ahead of second placed Christian College with Geelong

College placing third.

The tag team format sees one surfer from each school

enter the water, catch two waves and then return to the

beach to tag their next team mate. Teams have fourty

minutes in total to complete that task. The score from

each wave is added together with the highest overall

score determining the winning team.

The girls showed the benefits of their tag team experience and training, and used their local knowledge of Smiths

Beach to their advantage. They each played their part in a solid win.

Chaplain As I write Term 2 is almost ended and it is a good time to reflect on my first six months as a Chaplain at Newhaven College. It has been an absolute privilege to speak at each Year 9 and Senior School assembly and at some Middle School assemblies which are always action packed whilst at the same time hearing of such mercurial sporting suc-cess and appreciating the strength of performing arts in the College. I have very much appreciated the courteous and open friendship of many students and particularly the very faithful Friday Philosophy Club members who come weekly to debate ferociously many central ideas as well as the issues they are passionate about like the future of bees! Our topics have included how we know what we know? Does God exist or is God a creation of our mind? Mysticism, Existentialism, spiritual experience, rationalism and are we free or are our lives determined? It has also been a privilege to play a small part in Megan Thompson's thought provoking Senior Literature class with its wonderful, talented and carrot munching group of perceptive, individualistic thinkers. The Tuesday lunchtime table tennis boys continue to allow me to compete badly in their high powered game which seems to double as a SAC tutorial session! It has been a privilege to meet each week with fellow Chaplain Kate Johnson and to pray for the whole College with items provided by staff, and to join with the staff at Boys Home at their Staff briefing on Fridays at recess. I wish each school family a refreshing break over the next two weeks. Richard Prideaux - Chaplain
