Page ALL SOULS DAY GREEN LUNCH On Friday Novem- ber 2nd, we com- memorated All Souls Day. As part of our observance of this important day in our school calendar, we con- ducted a Mass and our Captains read out the list of our benefactors and war dead. At Headmasters As- sembly earlier in the week, I ex- plained the significance of All Saints Day (also known as All Hallows' Day or Hallowmas), the day after All Hal- lows' Eve (Hallowe'en) and All Souls Day. After the Mass we headed up to Halse Hall for the Green Lunch, named after the Green family who were great benefactors of the school. The lunch provided an opportunity for Year 6 to Year 12 to share a meal to- gether along with the staff and invited guests and be thankful for the gifts the school has received throughout its history. VOICES OF REMEMBRANCE CONCERT Last Saturday, Charters Towers held a concert of remembrance as a part of the centenary of the signing of the ar- mistice ending WWI. The concert in- cluded the Charters Towers Choris- ters, Songbirds, combined schools choir and combined brass band. The combined band was conducted by Leslie Croker (ASSG staff), and the combined choirs were conducted and accompanied by Wendy Fleming (ASSG staff) and Robyn Dietrich (ASSG parent and teacher at Millches- ter SS). This was a fantastic oppor- tunity for our primary and secondary students to work together with musi- cians from the community and I am very grateful for the organisation un- dertaken by staff and supporters from our school that turned an idea into re- ality. INTER-SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL To cap off what was already an enormous day last Friday, the school hosted the first Inter-School Volley- ball competition in the Jim Rebgetz Centre. What a great night! Teams from all schools attended along with many parents making it an exciting competition. Many thanks to Tash Johnson for organizing the event. As usual, the support from ASSG staff and students was excellent. INTER-HOUSE BOYS TENNIS Congratulations to the boys who took part in the Inter-House Boys Tennis competition on Saturday. The competitive section was conducted in the morning with the social sec- tion in the afternoon. The boys had lots of fun and gave the spectators plenty of entertainment with the range of techniques on show. Thanks to Mr Single for running the tournament. LEADERSHIP PROGRAM As the Year 12 students prepare to depart, the Year 11 students have been involved in leadership prepara- tions. They have participated in leadership lessons in class and had a day off campus to develop their leadership skills. Students were then able to put themselves forward to serve the school. Those students who nominated for positions then had individual consultations with a panel to talk about their application. Year 11 students and staff then vot- ed on who they thought should be in the leadership group and who was their preferred School Captain. END OF YEAR ACADEMIC LOAD The end of the year brings with it extra academic pressure. I would encourage students to make sure they are well prepared and orga-nized for the assessments that are coming up. If they need help with their workload, then they must ask for assistance but they must re-member that there is no substitute for hard work.

LEO CLUB – DRINK CONTAINER RECYCLING As you will be aware, Queensland has joined other states in operating a Drink Container Recycling Scheme. Each container returned to the authorised collection point is worth 10 cents. Our service club, ASSG Leo Club (associated with Charters Towers Lions Club, Host) will be the collection point at school. They will collect and return containers as a part of their fund-raising and use the money to spon-sor community organisations and projects.

We have been successful in gaining a grant to have some containers made and will place these so con-tainers can be dropped off at school and then returned in bulk. For example, after the volleyball on Friday, three garbage bags full of containers were collected, taking them out of land fill.

What you might not know is that when you return containers in Queensland, you can have the col-lection amount credited to a charity or organisation or take it in cash. If you wish to donate to the Leo Club so they can expand their work in the community you just have to tell the cashier at the collection point that you wish to donate to All Souls St Gabriels School Leo Club, our scheme ID is C10001502. https://containerexchange.com.au/

YEAR 7, 2019 ORIENTATION From Tuesday 6 November until Thursday 8 November, students at-tending Year 7 in 2019 had the op-portunity to spend time with us at the school as a part of our orienta-tion program. Students and their families attended a BBQ with staff and current Year 11 students as a way to meet and get to know their buddies. Students took the oppor-tunity to spend two nights in the dorms to get a taste of what to ex-pect next year. We hope that stu-dents will feel a bit more comforta-ble when the first school day comes around in January. Thanks to everyone involved and especially Mrs Shadforth who organised the experience.

Dean of School

Karen Storey

Farewell Year 12 By the time you read this the Year 12’s of 2018 will be almost finished their schooling journey at All Souls. Although celebrations will tend to be a focus over the next week and a half the reality of completing their schooling has probably not hit home yet for the majority of our senior cohort. For many, staff and students alike, this will come with mixed emotions. Some are glad to ‘get out’ while others lament the good times and adopted family and friends that they will miss when they leave. Regardless of which camp our seniors fall into we, as staff of the School, are proud of their efforts and thankful for their contribution during their time with us. Year 7 - 11 must carry on While the Year 12’s are involved (mostly off campus) in the Beyond School program and presentations our Year 7-11 students will be con-

tinuing their learning in preparation for their exam block period. I en-courage these junior secondary students to continue their hard work and avoid ‘switching off’ ear-ly. Staff will continue to expect and demand high standards of groom-ing, punctuality and organisation right until the end of the last day of the year. This is not new; the ex-pectations are the same as they have been all year. I wish all stu-dents good luck with their exams.

Alternate schedule After exams are complete Year 7-11 students will be involved in a number of alternate activities. While the schedule is still being fi-nalised I can reveal that we will be running an Arts Retrospective Day on Friday of week 7, which will be a culmination and celebration of all of our artistic successes over the year. There will also be the oppor-tunity for students to be involved in some artistic projects along with a number of Christmas and commu-nity themed activities over the week. I look forward to finishing the year with some enjoyable and engaging activities.

School Chaplain Bro Nathan-James All Souls Day All Souls Day, or Commemoration of All Faithful Departed, is a day set aside in the Church calendar to remember and pray for those who have died. The practice of praying for the dead has its ori-gins in pre-Christian society where relatives would venerate the graves of their loves ones. This reflected the belief in a continued existence after death. The tradi-tion followed into the practice of Christianity where members of the Church would pray for the dead. On All Souls Day around the world a service takes place in which the names of those who had passed away are read. Members of con-gregations are invited to add their relatives’ names to those whose names are written in a Church’s funeral and burial register. As a School dedicated to All Souls each year our School Captains read the list of the war dead, our founders and benefactors and those who have recently died.

Armistice Centenary bell ringing This year marks 100 years since the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous war. After the signing of the Armistice on 11 November 1918 the bells of many Churches and towns were rung to mark the end of hostilities. As part of Armi-stice Centenary commemorations this Remembrance Day, bells from bell towers across Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom will again ring to mark the signifi-cance of this anniversary. Our bells, the Chapel, Halse Hall and Feetham bells, will be rung for 2 minutes at 12.30 pm on Sunday 11 November; joining with other bells being rung across the nation and overseas.

In our thoughts

& prayers;

We pray for the soul of Riley

Yuen Wing, past student,

who recently passed away.

We also pray for all those

who mourn his loss. May he

rest in peace and rise in glo-

ry.

We pray for our year 12 stu-

dents as they begin their

transition from their time at

All Souls St Gabriels School

and move to further educa-

tion, training or employment.

We pray for our year 6 stu-

dents as they begin their

transition from their time in

Junior School and prepare to

move into secondary school

in the New Year. We also re-

member those students from

other schools who will join

ASSG in 2019.

We pray for our year 11 stu-

dents as they begin to feel

the reality of taking on lead-

ership of the school in 2019.

QUT - STEM Camp Amber Aspinall Year 11 In the first week of the last school holidays, Sean Smith and I, Amber Aspinall, travelled to Brisbane to attend the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths Camp (STEM) at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT). It was a week-long camp that was fully fund-ed by QUT. We were fortunate enough to be amongst 160 other likeminded students who gathered together to help solve 10 real-world problems. My real-world problem was called ‘Helping Hearts Live Healthier’. Within this project, we worked with the director of Clinical Services and Education, as well as two fourth-year students who are currently studying a Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology (EP). At the beginning of the week, my group's focus was learning about how the heart works as well as how and why people suffer from heart attacks. We also learnt how medical tests are performed on patients. By the end of the week we were able to test a real patients heart rate and oxygen saturation using a pulse oximeter, blood glucose levels using blood glucose tests and blood pressure using a blood pressure cuff and a stethoscope. Also, we learnt how to design exercise programs for patients who have suffered from heart attacks, to assist them in the recovery of heart attacks and the prevention of them reoccurring in the future. Overall, it was a great learning experience and I would strongly recommend other students who are interested within the STEM fields, to apply for this camp when they are in Year 11. Sean Smith Year 11 I, Sean Smith, had to deal the real world problem called ‘I Know What You Streamed Next Summer’ a title that would become the subject of many jokes, the activity was the most highly ranked, with over 60 people having it as their first preference. I was one of the lucky 16 people who was chosen for the activity, it focused on using computation to predict outcomes based on a limited dataset; such as predicting whether or not you were a board-er based on number of siblings, fruit preferences and whether or not you liked the city or the beach. Very little was accomplished the majority of the time, as we were busy dancing and just generally being social or arguing over ethics (Blame me for that). Though there was a task to be accomplished, and we did that in less than a day, we “designed” an algorithm that would be used to train a computer to predict an individual’s preference of movie based on their gender, what and how long they studied, their GPA, and whether they wanted to do a post grad. In a group of four, we accomplished this with around 75% accuracy, which is extremely poor realistically, but it was good for less than a day’s worth of work. This had to have been one of the greatest experiences I’ve ever had, I met many new people, became slightly more interested in statistical mathematics, which I still find tedious, but hey if you can make a computer figure it out for you, why not. Without a doubt, I would recommend this to any Year 11s next year who might think of ap-plying next year, even some who might not have even considered it.

Year 9 Drama Kylie Kempster Drama Teacher YEAR 9 DRAMA MAKE A BIG SPLASH ON RIVERWAY STAGE Year 9 Drama students, along with Isla Bowley from Year 10 Drama, experienced the thrill of performing on the big stage recently when they travelled to Townsville’s Riverway Theatre to participate in Queensland Theatre’s Scene Project. After weeks of brainstorming, planning and rehearsal, we bussed it to Townsville to participate in a workshop con-ducted by Queensland Theatre before showing our performance to the other participating schools… and the pro-fessional actors from QT. Then we were able to watch the interpretations of the same script by the other partici-pating schools, followed by a full-length performance by professional actors. Although the performance was nerve-wracking, we received some great feedback, and the general consensus was, “What a rush! Can we please do this again next year?”

Instrumental Music Leslie Croker Instrumental Music Co-ordinator The year has been far from winding down for our music students, with at least one performance every week so far! As always, our students have done themselves and the school proud at every event. SHEP In the last week of the holiday, Harry Kempster and Kurtis West travelled to Brisband to attend the QLD State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP). This is the largest and highest standard of all the SHEPs held throughout Queensland. Harry was accepted into the Brian Hogg Wind Orchestra on first trumpet, and Kurtis was accepted in-to the Tommy Tycho Big Band on baritone saxophone. The bands rehearsed solidly for three days and the pro-gram culminated with a concert on the final day. The standard of music the boys were playing far exceeds that of our school band repertoire. They enjoyed the challenge and their musicianship expanded from the experience. Congratulations, Harry and Kurtis. Fete Our two newly-formed Jam Bands had their debut performances entertaining the crowd at the fete. Undeterred by the rain, both bands, along with Stage Band, played very well. The Jam Bands were formed in term three under the initiation and guidance of Mr Ron Sellars. Students meet one afternoon per week to rehearse, supported by Mr Sellars, Mr Price and Mr Wallis. They did a great job in their first performances! Charters Towers Festival of Bands Festival of Bands (FOB) is a combined schools band workshop involving all band students from Year 4-12 from all Charters Towers schools. Students spend all day rehearsing new music in preparation for a gala concert in the evening to showcase their work. This year, 111 students took to the World Theatre stage and we were lucky enough to have Mr Haddon Mossley (founder of FOB) travel to Charters Towers to be a guest conductor. The standard the bands reached for the concert was a credit to their hard work all day. Each year, funds raised from the concert are donated to a charity and this year we were able to donate $300 to the QCWA Queensland Drought Appeal. We thank the Charters Towers Performing Arts Festival (Eisteddfod committee) for sponsoring the hire of the World Theatre.

31st Battalion Association Reunion Luncheon Harry Kempster was asked by the RSL to attend this luncheon to play the Last Post and Rouse. Harry played for the same event last year, so it is a credit to his performance and conduct that he was asked to play again this year. Green Lunch Concert Band entertained the guests at the beginning and end of Green Lunch, including preparing the Ramsay Song in one rehearsal to accompany the Ramsay boys’ singing. Kurtis West also performed one of his Grade Eight AMEB exam pieces as a solo item during the program, not missing a beat when the wind blew his music closed mid-song! Voices of Remembrance concert This was our Vocal Ensemble’s chance to be part of a combined choir and perform in the community. Voices of Remembrance is a statewide choral program presented by the Queensland Government, in partnership with Queensland Music Festival, that encourages communities across Queensland to commemorate the centenary of the signing of the Armistice through music. The concert, held at the World Theatre, was hosted by the Charters Towers Regional Council and involved a 45 piece choir comprised of students from ASSG and Millchester State School, Charters Towers Choristers, 60s and Better Songbirds, Magpies and other members of the Charters Tow-ers community. Students rehearsed and performed a variety of songs related to the theme of Remembrance Day.

Assembly & Chapel Between all the large events, students have regularly performed at Headmaster’s Assemblies and Chapel services. Thank you to all students for your effort in these performances.

Sport News

Natasha Johnson Secondary Sports Co-ordinator Inter-School Sport One week ago saw the conclusion of Inter-School Softball and Tennis fixtures with games against CCC. Results for the season are listed below. Congratulations to the teams who won their respective premierships and special men-tion to our 1st, 15 years and 13 years Boys Tennis teams and 14 years and 13B Girls Softball teams who were all undefeated premiers. As a result of the strength within our Boys Tennis ranks All Souls St Gabriels is the 2018 Boys Tennis Premiership School, a title we also won in 2016 and 2017.

Thank you to all coaches who gave their time to coach our sporting teams across the Term 3/4 season. Rugby Tens: Saturday evening the 27th October saw many of our students involved in the Charters Towers Rugby Union Tens Competition hosted by the Charters Towers Bulls. Despite a short disrupted lead up to the carnival with the threat of heat waves, our teams (Under 13 years, Under 15 years, Under 17 years Boys and Under 17 years Girls) trained hard and went into the modified carnival quietly confident.

In what turned out to be great weather, our Under 17 years Boys coached by Lenny Knuth and managed by Miss Martin defeated CTSHS first up in a dominating performance, 39-0. Their second and final game was a hard fought game against CCC, taking the victory 7-5. Special mention to Sam Knuth for assisting with the training ses-sions. The Under 15 years boys protected their title as the premier rugby tens age group in the Towers. These boys took out the Under 13 years title undefeated in 2016, the Under 15 years title in 2017 when most of these boys were only 14 years old and again took out the title after an undefeated round in 2018. The Under 15 year boys controlled their matches well and were never really not in control of the game. It was also great to see some of the kids with limited rugby experience have a run and also see the more experienced players help them with positional play and advice. A special mention and thank you to their coach Karl McKellar and manager Miss Mitch-ell. Our Under 13 years team, coached by Mr Peter Tamaduk and managed by Davin Marshall fielded a young, in-experienced team that faced CCC twice, as no other school fielded a Under 13 years team. They were convincingly defeated in their first game but fought hard and learnt from their mistakes going down narrowly in the second. We were proud of their commitments and never say die attitude. Our Under 17 Girls team coached by Miss Marley and managed by Miss Taylor, always look forward to this carnival every year. They went down in the final minutes of their first game to CCC but turned the result around and beat Charters Towers State High in their second game.

Congratulations to both Tim Ievers and Mackenzie Clark for receiving Best and fairest awards for the carnival.

Thank you very much to the Charters Towers Rugby Union Club for your continued support of school sport in Charters Towers.

Inter-School Volleyball Friday 2nd November saw the inaugural Inter-School Volleyball Tournament take place here at All Souls St Gabriels School from 4.00pm. It was a fantastic night for the four schools in Charters Towers to socialise and play some so-cial but competitive volleyball! Over the course of the night over 50 games of volleyball were played with students cheering loudly for their schools. Overall all students had a fantastic time, even if they had no idea how to play volleyball before the commencement of the night! Congratulations to all teams involved. A special thank you to the following All Souls St Gabriels School staff for officiating and making the night possible: Mr Fleming, Mrs Fleming, Mr Fogarty, Mrs Storey, Ms Mitchell, Mr Cuckson and Mr Gibson.

State Championships Todd Thorn recently competed in the State Athletics Championships in the 16 Years High Jump, Long Jump and 400m events. We are very proud of this young man’s achievements and hope that it has inspired him to train harder in order to better his results next year. Todd obtained PB’s in both the 400m and long jump. In long jump he came 4th with an impressive jump of 6.65m and in the 400m clocked a time of 50.21 secs placing him 6th fastest in the state. Congratulations on your work Todd, you not only did All Souls St Gabriels School proud but yourself.

NQ Trials for 2018 Congratulations to Cody Bucklar, Casey Flanagan and Amber Aspinall who were selected in the Charters Towers U19 Tennis teams. These students will compete at NQ Trials in Townsville on 14th November. We wish these stu-dents the very best of luck.

Selection trials are also being held for 2019 North Queensland U19 Softball team next week. Students attending these trials are: Vivienne Elliott and Mackenzie Clark. Once again we wish these girls the best at the trials.

Awards Season I know that Mrs Storey has written elsewhere about Awards Day and Preliminary Prize Giving ceremonies which will happen at the end of Term 4. I do not wish to repeat her information but rather provide a snapshot from a sporting perspective.

Preliminary Prize Giving will take place on Thursday afternoon, 15th November from 1:30pm. At Preliminary Prize Giving we acknowledge the Age Champions for each carnival in addition to the Most Promising Player (13B to 15yrs) and Best and Fairest (3rds, 2nds and 1sts) and Most Improved (1st teams only) for our team sports. The ‘Best’ performers in each sport along with awards for sportsmanship and endeavour and the House Cup for both Girls and Boys are presented at Awards Day on Friday 16th November. I look forward to these special occasions.

2019 Inter-House Age Champions: Swimming, Cross-Country and Athletics From 2019, Age Champions at Inter-House Swimming, Cross-Country and Athletics Carnivals will no longer need to wait until Term 4 and Preliminary Prize Giving to receive their medallions, as they will now be awarded during the presentation at the conclusion of the carnival itself.

Boys Inter-House Tennis John Single The Inter-House Tennis held on Saturday 3 November saw 66 boys competing in Com-petitive and Social Tennis. Champion House: 1st Page, 2nd Feetham, 3rd Ramsay.

Cattle Club Tearna Wilson Year 12 While our competitions have finished for the year there is still a lot happening around the Rural Activities area. Last week one of our red Brahman heifers went back to the place that we bought her from to be put to a bull, and hopefully we have some more heifers going to another property to be put to another bull. We also have been offered a paddock for the rest of the cattle to go into over the holidays, so, all going to plan, there won’t be any cattle at school over the holidays, which gives our paddocks a chance to rejuvenate. As Cattle Club starts winding down and it comes to the end of the year, it is time for us to say goodbye to the senior students. This also means that is time for the students in the younger grades to step up and show some leadership down at our rural activities area. Year 10 students Dakota Gough, Brandon Finger and Camden Finger have been doing a wonderful job of helping out. They have been a part of Cattle Club for a fair while so I imag-ine they are happy to finally be the oldest students down there. I am sure they are also enjoying the extra re-sponsibilities that come with being the oldest students. In retrospect, the Cattle Club have had both an enjoyable and successful year. On behalf of the members of the All Souls St Gabriels School Cattle Club I would like to thank everyone that has helped us and supported us throughout the year; it has been a big year. I would especially like to give a big thank you to Lionel, as the Cattle Club itself would not be possible without him. He has taught all of us a lot over the years, and has helped us a great deal, even outside of the Cattle Club. He also makes Cattle Club interesting and enjoyable for us along with continually challenging us so we can be the best we can. Both the Cattle Club and Equestrian Team have their combined breakup this weekend and the awards presented will be summarised in the next report.

Equestrian Team Charlee Keleher Year 11 On 13th October, the Equestrian team and Cattle Club ran a stall at the All Souls St Gabriels P & F Fete. Lionel’s horse, “Boreman”, was used for the ‘guess the weight of the horse’ activity as well as a few of the cows. One of the Equestrian team member’s horses was also taken down and tied up at the Fete in an attempt to desensitise her to different noises and assist in getting her more competition ready for next year. Due to our competitions being complete for the year we have now turned our attention to enhancing our learning of the theoretical side of horses. One Tuesday afternoon consisted of learning how to take heartrates and respira-tory rates on horses. Carley Shephard, our Year 7 student used a stethoscope to successfully calculate the heartrate. Our goal was to find out how fit the horses were by recording their heartrate before, during and after they did some work. Using this data we discovered that, much like humans, the faster their heartrate returned to its original state, the fitter they were. Lionel has also donated his time on Wednesday afternoons to teach us some of his skills. Last Wednesday we practiced stops and spins which wasn’t a new area for most of the horses. We will conclude and celebrate our year with the Rural Activities break-up on Saturday evening, 10th November.

Junior School Tina Akers Head of Junior School As the 2018 school year draws to a close, the school environment seems to be busier than ever with all teachers heavily involved in fi-nalising their assessments for the School reports, getting organised for the end of year concert and en-suring that all aspects of the cur-riculum have been taught. Inter-House Swimming Carni-val The weather was perfect (albeit very hot) and the beaming smiles of the students said it all, as they swam their races and participated in the novelty events. This was the first year our Prep class have been involved in this event and it was wonderful to see the children hav-ing lots of fun and joining in with what was a very successful day. It was a pleasure to see all the stu-dents encouraged to give their best effort and support their House. Congratulations to this year’s champion House: Feetham and Becket and all the Age Champions and Runners-up.

Thank you Miss Browne for co-ordinating a well-organised event, the Year 6 students who tirelessly supported the younger students to complete their events, Mac Sharp-Callaghan and Wynita Deem who provided the extra support to staff and our committed staff and the many parents who volunteered their time to help out in an official capacity this year. We are so blessed to have such a supportive community at All Souls. It is what makes us an exceptional school and events like this run smoothly. We wish the All Souls St Gabriels’ swimming team all the very best for this year’s Inter-School Carni-val on Friday, 9 November. We know they will represent our School well by demonstrating good sportsmanship and by en-couraging each team member to do their personal best.

Year 7 (2019) Transition This week, our Year 6 students spent a couple of the days in the Secondary School as they take part in the Year 7 Transition Program. This program has been planned to introduce the students to some of the key staff who will be guiding their transition and learning in the Secondary School during 2019. The program will give our Year 6 students the opportunity to meet students who will be joining them in 2019 and be introduced to some of the routines and expectations of Year 7.

Pre-prep Transition Like our Year 6 students, the Pre-prep children also had a change of scenery on Wednesday, as they started their day in the Prep class-room. Mrs Marshall and Mrs Fittock planned a special morning for the Pre-preps to introduce them to some of the changes they will en-joy in 2019.

PAGE 13 ISSUE NO 13/2018 9 NOVEMBER 2018

To facilitate this transition, the Prep children will join the Year 1 class on Wednesday morning.

Prep/Pre-Prep Orientation The Pre-prep Orientation morning will take place on Saturday, 10 No-vember between 9:30 am and 11:00 am.

All Souls St Gabriels welcomes any families who are considering a placement for their child in Pre-prep (Kindergarten). Please come along and join us for a social morning of activities and fun for the children. It is a great oppor-tunity for new families to meet each other and say hello to our dedicated and experienced staff.

Little Souls Our Early Years staff understand the importance of building collabo-rative and respectful partnerships with families and the wider school community. During the year, chil-dren who are not quite old enough, or ready to attend Pre-prep (Kindy) have enjoyed a won-derful time painting, building, singing, dancing, exploring and playing at Little Souls. As a School we value the importance of providing opportunities for the younger children in the community to enjoy our facilities and for par-ents to meet new families.

Thank you Mrs Limkin for your continued commitment to early childhood education and your nev-er ending energy to engage the

youngest children of our communi-ty in a variety of fun-filled activi-ties each Friday morning.

The last day for Little Souls this year, is Friday 9 November. We look forward to welcoming families and friends to join us again in 2019.

Junior School Staffing 2019 The Junior School will have some changes in staffing next year.

Mrs Toohey will be enjoying a well-deserved break from the class-room in 2019, as she takes ad-vantage of her Long Service Leave.

At the end of this year, we will say farewell to Mr Roughley. Rob is heading to the Northern Territory to teach at a remote school.

The news is not all sad. I am very pleased to announce we will wel-come Mrs Tonya Peagham back to the Junior School Staff in 2019.

At this stage of our planning for 2019, the class teachers will be: Pre-prep Mrs Margaret Riddle Prep Mrs Rachel Marshall Year 1 Mrs Janita Reardon Year 2 Mrs Laura Heuir Year 3 Mrs Tonya Peagham Year 4 Mrs Jane Turner Year 5 Mrs Janey Dickson Year 6 Mr Peter Turner

World Teachers’ Day We recently celebrated World Teachers’ Day. A day where we acknowledged the professionalism, dedication and expertise of all staff responsible for educating our students. Teaching is a very re-warding career and as the busiest time of the year approaches, it can be very demanding and stressful. I am fortunate to work with such an enthusiastic, positive and support-ive team, who are truly focused on providing the best learning for all our students, so once again thank you.

Page Dormitory Davin Marshall Senior Resident We are at the midway point of the term for most of the boys but the seniors only have two weeks left of their school life. They are excit-ed to be moving onto the next phase of their lives but also a bit apprehensive, especially at the thought of moving away from their friendship group. They have been a great group this year and have definitely left their mark on our dormitory in many ways. Next year’s seniors have a great exam-ple to follow. Thank you 2018 Page Seniors for a great year in our dormitory!! We have been busy here with plenty going on for the boys to be involved in. Friday night saw the inaugural Inter-School Volleyball competition held at All Souls. The kids all got involved in the spirit of the event and had a great time. It quickly became clear that the oth-er schools played much more vol-leyball than we do at All Souls but that didn’t stop our kids from hav-ing a go and competing to their fullest. Overall a great start to a social event that will become a popular fixture. The Inter-House Tennis was held on Saturday and though the num-bers were down a bit this year it was a very good day. The com-petitive tennis was played in the morning and Owen Elliott took out the Age Champion for the Under 13s. Well done Owen. The after-noon saw the social tennis kick off and the finale was the doubles in the evening. It was a lot of fun and Page House ended up win-ning the competition. Once again I can say the conduct of our students at both events on the weekend was first class and is something they can feel proud of. It is a pleasure to take our stu-dents anywhere. If you have any concerns regard-ing your son in boarding please don’t hesitate to call me.

Ramsay Dormitory Rhett Butler Senior Resident On the weekend of the 27th & 28th All Souls participated in the annual Rugby Tens competition. It was an extremely successful weekend for all the players in-volved with the Open boys and 15 Years both winning their respec-tive age groups. Ramsay had too many players taking part to name individually, however they all put in outstanding efforts to take out memorable wins against much fancied opposition. A special men-tion is deserved for Ramsay’s only under 13 year representative, Hayden Smith. In true Ramsay spirit, he played like a champion. Wins have been tough to come by for this age group and it was an-other tough night at the office for them, however, I am yet to see this age group lose a game on ef-fort. Despite the adversity they face they continue to show up for one another and continue to im-prove. Success is not far away for these boys if they continue to work as hard as they have done all year. Best of luck in the future boys. I would like to finish with a re-minder to all parents when organ-ising weekend leave for their sons that I require written permission in the form of an email or text if they are to go on leave with any-one other than parents. This is just a technicality that has begun to slip in recent times, but it is so vital for me to be able to cross the T’s and dot the I’s. Your assis-tance in this matter is greatly ap-preciated. That’s all from Ramsay for now, as always, anyone wishing to get in touch in regards to your son, please feel free to do so via email or phone. Rhett Butler 0400751433 [email protected]

The weeks are flying by and already Awards Day is just around the cor-ner. The past few weeks have again been busy for our boys, they have been involved in Touch, Rugby 10s, Inter-House Tennis and Inter-School Tennis and the Green Lunch. All the houses also performed their lip sync battles following Green Lunch and our Feetham boys walked away with a win, they did tie with Ramsay, but we are calling it a win. After the lip sync battles the school held a Inter-School Vol-leyball Competition, which was a great success. It was great to see so many people get in and have a go but to also support everyone else. I think next year the boys should get a little practice in before they go out on to the court. A big thank you to Mr Fleming, Mrs Sto-rey and Mrs Johnson for organising such a great event. The boys fol-lowed that up with their Inter-House Tennis competition on Satur-day which yet again was also a great day. From Feetham dorm we had Kadyn Flanagan get age cham-pion, James Callaghan runner up and Jimmy McDowall age champion, great work guys. I would like say a big thank you to every one of the boys that where there, you guys made the night run very smoothly. The Feetham boys would also like to say a big thank you to Mr John Single for a great night. Finally, we are pushing the message in the dorm for all our boys to keep their heads in the game until the end of term so we all finish on the best possible note. If you have any questions or your son wants to go on leave please email me at [email protected] or call me on 0419471433.

We are half way through term 4 and all our weekends have been busy but enjoyable.

On 27 & 28 October, we had the Inter-School Rugby 10’s Carnival which all our girls went to watch and had a very enjoyable after-noon/evening. All the children put in an amazing effort even though the weather was extremely hot. Mackenzie Clark walked away with a well-deserved Best and Fairest Award for the open girls division.

In other sporting news our very talented Chloe Wolfenden took out the 13Yrs age group for the Char-ters Towers Tennis Competition on Saturday.

Becket House as a whole gets a massive congratulations for win-ning the Inter-House Lip Sync Competition on Friday afternoon. That was followed up on Friday night when we hosted the Inter-School Volleyball. Well done to all the girls who played and those who supported, it was a great night.

The seniors are getting toward the end and they are busy organising their Christmas party for the dorm and helping all the children pick their Secret Santa.

The dorm is definitely abuzz with talk of graduation and how many days our seniors have left.

With all the fun in the dorms, we must not forget that we do have school work to do. We have a full calendar ahead of us, but I am sure the girls will knuckle down and the weeks will fly by. Just a reminder that before the girls go out on leave, I need it in writing please.

Chad Dormitory

Yvonne Schaefer Senior Resident With our Inter-School sport all done and dusted for the year and our seniors on their final count down, we are looking back and thinking, where did that year go! Our seniors have been a great support this year and I would like to thank them for all their help. I will start with Dianne – she has been a wonderful support to my-self, the dormitory and Chad House throughout the year. I could count on her for anything. She is always willing to take the extra step to make it right, thanks Di. Zoe G has been my go-to on so many things – ‘So what do you think about this Zoe?’, ‘Do you think this would work if I did it that way Zoe?’. She never rolled her eyes at me or shook her head and muttered ‘Oh My God….Really!’ Not while I was watching anyway. Rae Rae is just organisation in a bottle, she tells me, ‘Well if we just do this, then we can do that, and we will fit it all in!’ and it works! Thanks Rae Rae for organising us and keeping us on the straight and narrow. Freya has been my social media encyclopedia…‘What does this mean Freya?’, ‘Why do they use that Freya?’, Can you talk to the little ones about this please Freya, they will listen to you… you are not old!’ Thanks for helping me out with everything social media. It’s great to have someone with such a mature perspective that kids can go to.

Georgia has been my inspirational senior this year. She is always hap-py and has a ready smile. She is so dedicated to her goal of doing well at school but always has time for the little ones if they need help. Georgia is never ever in a rush… to do anything! It still gets done, sometimes just in Georgia time! Alanah is our ‘new’ senior this year… but you wouldn’t have known it. She fitted in from the first day and her sense of fun but also justice is great to have in the dorm… however if we could some-times just turn down the volume dial, just a bit, just sometimes, it would be great!

They have been a great group of kids and we wish them all the best, knowing that they will suc-ceed in what ever they do. Finally, there will be some minor disruptions in the last couple of weeks. Stoll Constructions will be starting with the downstairs bath-rooms in the last two weeks of term. Workmen will be in the dorms between 8.30am and 3pm each day and the girls in the downstairs wing will be using al-ternate bathrooms while theirs is being done up. As always, we are always at the end of the phone.

Alban Dormitory

Vanessa Herring Senior Resident

Alban Dormitory has been a hive of activity over the past 2 weeks, with Rugby 10’s, Volley Ball, Lip Sync Battles, All Souls Day and Green Lunch. And not forgetting the academic workload that every-one is carrying at the moment.

Our girls played well during the Rugby 10’s event. We didn’t walk away with the trophy, but I’d like to congratulate all our girls – we’re very proud of the way you represented All Souls and your-selves.

All Souls Day was lively, with our traditional chapel service followed by Green Lunch. Everyone then had a quick uniform change into House colours to perform their Lip Sync battle songs. Our Alban girls really brought their own brand of enchantment to the stage with their rendition of “The Magic in Me”. Well done girls!

Alban girls performing “The Magic in Me”

All Souls Day – Green Dinner

All Souls hosted the Volley Ball tournament last Friday evening. From all accounts, it was a good night. I’d like to congratulate all our girls on their behaviour during the evening, and for enthusiastical-ly supporting their peers.

I’d also like to say at this point, that I’m happy with how we’re tracking. The general atmosphere in Alban is good and everyone is knuckling down to get all their work commitments completed be-fore exam block. Our seniors only have 10 days to go, but for the re-maining girls, there’s still a long 4 weeks ahead.

With continued help from parents, we’ll support the girls, now more than ever, and get them through the last gruelling month of term 4. Some girls will feel the pressure more than others, so if your daughter is struggling, please let me know and I will do everything I can to help.

Take care – until next time.
