Each of the six dorms have had split systems in- stalled at a cost of $1.2m with the whole project fully funded by the school with no external borrowing. Fi- ne- tuning is now taking place with temperature settings so that the bays are evenly cooled. We have kept the louvres so students can access fresh air when the air conditioning is not on and the fans in bays have also been retained and work in conjunction with the air conditioning unit to spread the cool air evenly. All of the rooves have been painted in thermal paint to try and reduce heat load into the build- ing. Whilst past students may regard this as a luxury compared to their boarding days, it has become a ne- cessity to enable the boarders to get a decent night sleep. Our thanks goes to the Board for supporting the pro- ject. The event was well attended, with past students from many years, including a group from the war era. The weekend is a great opportunity to both catch up with school friends but to also meet current students and to hear about the school and how it is developing. At the dinner on Saturday even- ing, there were two new induc- tees into the Walls of Fame, Dr Patricia Pepper and Mrs Prudence Clarke OAM. Both spoke about their journeys and their time at Gabes and the importance of making the most of your oppor- tunities whilst at school. Their achievements have been included in the Phoenix for you to read. Biographies of past winners are also available to view in the mu- seum. STUDENTS Congratulations to the music stu- dents who were a part of the combined Charters Towers Festi- val of Bands. This event was hosted by ASSG for the first time and was held at the World Thea- tre. Many thanks to Miss Croker for organising the event and to Mrs Fleming for assisting. Well done to the boys who have returned from the Queensland Athletics Championships. The boys acquitted themselves well against other high level athletes. Last weekend, the Rugby Tens competition was hosted by Char-ters Towers Rugby Union at the Bulls ground. The school entered teams in each of the four divisions and were very successful winning three premierships in the 15s, Open Girls and Open Boys. MUSICAL Last week, mysterious green lights lit up Halse Hall, the Pavillion and other locations around the school. Why is ASSG green? appeared in the papers. On Friday 13 October, all was revealed as students from Year 2 to Year 12 entered the Em-erald City to discover that musicals at ASSG were back. In 2018, the school will be performing The Wiz at the World Theatre in April. The Wiz follows the original Wizard of Oz story line with some more up-beat songs and first appeared on Broadway in the 70s and then was released as a movie with Dianna Ross as Dorothy and Michael Jack-son as the Scarecrow. Auditions have commenced for current stu-dents and new students will have the opportunity to audition at ori-entation day.

As we move into Term 4, our attention turns to ensuring that your child's educational needs are fully catered for in 2018. We need to ensure that we have teachers and support staff available to cater for the wide range of subjects we have on offer.

If you know now that your family will not be part of our school family in 2018, could you contact me as soon as possible so that I am able to ensure that class lists are accurate. If you are considering the option of your child repeating their current year level in 2018, please speak to your class teacher in Junior School, or your child's Year Level Coordinator in Secondary, who will ad-vise me accordingly.

Debating News

Denis Riddle Debating Coach

Another win at the Great Debate! The Past Students Reunion weekend culminated in the annual Great De-bate on the topic “That the past students should do more”. The argument took place in Halse Hall on Sunday morning in front of an audience of over 200 students, past students and visitors. They were in for a tightly con-tested great debate.

Our Senior debaters were the Inter-School Senior Debating premiership winning team: Rachel Hall (Year 11 from McKinlay); Julia Keough (School Captain from Einasleigh) and Lance Shephard (Service Prefect from Coen). Arguing the negative on a challenging topic, they were against formidable opposition in the past students.

Their first speaker was Darryl Campbell (1953-64, Feetham House), origi-nally from Boulia. At school, he ran the book on the Melbourne Cup, which explains how he went on to be a stockbroker and successful businessman. The second speaker was Leanne Bull (Hunter) (1975-77, Chad House), from Melbourne, who had many happy memories of school life. The third speak-er was Christian Smith (1973-77, Green House), from Townsville, the bene-factor who provides the Awards Day CD Smith Prize for the Best Debater in the School.

It was an entertaining and close argument with a narrow one-point win go-ing to the still undefeated Senior Debating Team. For the record, the tally after thirteen Great Debates now stands at eight wins to the Seniors and five to the past students.

Our thanks go to: adjudicator, Hilary Grant from Zonta; the Past Students Association who provided the generous prizes; and to all who took part.

We look forward to the re-match next year.

Staying in Touch with Parents With this term being so short con-tact between home and school is vital for student success. All teach-ing staff will be endeavouring to make contact home by the half-way point of the term; however, if you wish to make additional con-tact with your student’s teachers please do not hesitate to do so. Generally email contact is pre-ferred; however, all teachers are also contactable through the school office. As this term is so short and culminates in a semes-ter report please keep staff up to date of any developments which may have an impact on your child’s learning or assessment.

Special Events Term 4 is full of special events. As such, it is vital that student’s for-mal uniforms are kept clean, ironed and ready to wear. A brief summary of some of the upcoming events requiring formal uniforms appears below, however, for the most current information please consult the ASSG calendar on the website and the Souls Schedule. Formal uniforms will be required for all secondary students for the following events this term:

Awards Day is one of the most im-portant events in our school calen-dar. It is essential that all students are present on this day. There is additional information below re-garding Year 12 students and their

PAGE 3 ISSUE NO 10/2017 23 OCTOBER 2017

Awards Day commitments; howev-er, if students are attending the ceremony with their parents on this day, they are asked to advise the office so that they are marked present at school. For those plan-ning to attend school as usual, buses will transport them to and from ASSG after roll-marking on this day. Thank-you in advance for your co-operation in keeping the school informed of your child’s whereabouts for this occasion.

Immediately following Awards Day it is a requirement for all Year 11 students to return to the Jim Rebgetz (Multi-purpose) Centre to assist in setting up for the Valedic-tory Dinner. This generally takes only a short time if all students are able to assist and is also a good team-building activity for the sen-iors of 2018. I thank the Year 11’s in advance for their commitment to this venture. Year 12 Final Week of School Planning is well underway for the final week of school for our Year 12 students. Mrs Barbara Salisbury and Mrs Wendy Fleming have done

an exceptional amount of work in organising activities for students that are relevant to their entry in-to the ‘big wide world’ after school. Parents and students will be receiving information via email in the near future. Please attend to returning all permission forms promptly so that your son/daughter can participate in these activities.

Valedictory Hair Appointments There is always much preparation for our senior students to arrange for the Valedictory; however, in accordance with QCAA require-ments all senior students are to be present at School for the entire duration of the school day. For ASSG students this means that they are present for the duration of our Awards Day. Therefore, to satisfy criteria for exit Year 12 stu-dents are asked to ensure all re-quired appointments are booked for 1.00 pm onwards on this day. Thank you in advance for your co-operation in regards to this matter.

Enjoy the term.

Dean of Students Shannon Lee For the last four years I have writ-ten about the same thing in the first edition of the Phoenix for Term 4, student Leadership and heartbreak with Girls Rugby Tens. This year student leadership is still at the top of my priorities; howev-er, I’m pleased to report we finally won the rugby! Student Leadership The Year 11 Leadership Program began with a trip to the Strand on Monday 9th October for Team Building and Problem Solving tasks. Once again it was a great day with students having the op-portunity to learn more about the skills and qualities of their peers. Mr Dietrich, Mrs Fleming, Br Na-than and Mrs Storey led the activi-ties with great success. The cohort worked very well together and showed a real connection with each other communicating well throughout the day.

PAGE 4 ISSUE NO 10/2017 23 OCTOBER 2017

Day two of the program involved much more pen to paper work as the students began their founda-tion planning for their Pledge, Goals and Activities for 2018. At this point in the process everyone has the opportunity to put their ideas forward. This foundation of work will be fleshed out in the coming CAD lessons ready for use by Jan 2018. We also threw a few more challenging tasks at the group on the second day, let’s just say everyone learnt a great deal from these experiences and they will be stronger for it. Overall, these two days were a great suc-cess I’m looking forward to hear-ing about the successes of this group next year.

In the next couple of weeks the students will be going through the process for nominating their lead-ers for 2018. This process involves a written application and interview with Mr Fleming, Mr Dietrich and myself. I would like to wish all the students who have applied all the best with their application in the next couple of weeks.

Victory at last! (Girls Rugby Tens) Coaching the Girls Rugby Tens team is always one of my high-lights for the year. Everyone asks why I like coaching them so much, the answer is always the same, ‘because they listen’! Show the girls something and they will try to execute it without question. Boys you could learn a lot from the way the girls train! This is the fourth year Miss Marley and I have taken the girls. After losing in the final the last two years and not winning a game in the first, it would be fair to say we may have been even more excited than the girls. We had a fantastic group of girls this year, co-captains Isabel Blen-nerhassett and Sarah Santo lead-ing the way with other senior players in the team Julia Keough and Jesse Whit ing. Sel f-preservation clearly not high on the girls list of priorities, charging in to the collisions fearlessly. The girls won the final in a nail bitting finish, after trailing at the break we scored three tries in a row to take a comfortable lead with four minutes to go. BTC scored another long range try and we had to hold on for the last two minutes. The bounce of the ball and some scramble defence got us across the line in the end. It was a great show of character and composure from the girls to keep defending after playing four games in the heat during the day. With a number of Year 10 and 11 girls in the team, I look forward to hearing about future successes from this group. Congratulations girls you are well deserved winners.

A Foundation of what, for what Past and current students, as well as friends and visitors, gather in the Chapel on 8 October to cele-brate the Feast of Dedication. The service was celebrated in typical current ASSG style with all the pomp and ceremony. Amidst the figure of 8 procession with all the colours of the school and trails of the incense of two thurifers one might ask the question what is this all for. As our Chapel Prefect read the Gospel we were challenged to think about the wisdom of building foundations. In the Gospel, Jesus spoke to two men laying the foun-dations for a building; one built his on a foundation of sand and the other on rock. Of course, one would naturally say that a founda-tion laid in rock will be more stur-dy and able to withstand the stress of time placed on the build-ing. In selecting a foundation for anything one needs to ask them-selves what type of foundation is needed for what purpose. The purpose, in effect, dictates the type of foundation required. Thus, I asked what is the wisdom of this passage for us today; a foundation of what, and for what.

A foundation for what. To under-stand what kind of foundation we are charged with living as a school community we need to first ask the question what our foundation is for. Bishop Feetham, in his vision for Anglican Schools in North Queensland, believed that stu-dents should be prepared to be active citizens who would contrib-ute to the shaping of the future of the country. Furthermore, he be-lieved that education was not pri-marily for the student but for the benefit and betterment of society. Feetham’s vision had far reaching effects than acquiring the content of education. He sought to place emphasis on building the whole person; in mind, body and spirit.

PAGE 5 ISSUE NO 10/2017 23 OCTOBER 2017

Thus, when we ask a foundation for what, we can respond by say-ing a foundation that enables grad-uates of ASSG to be active contrib-utors to the benefit and advance-ment of society. Therefore, we can now ask what type of foundation we are charged to lay.

A foundation of what. Central to Feetham’s philosophy of education was his experience of life as a brother in the Brotherhood of the Good Shephard, and his love and passion for the bush. Bishop Feeth-am believed that the revelation and mysteries of God obtained through the reading of scripture, prayer, and participation in the lit-urgy and worship of the church, contained all things necessary for the building up of the person for service to the other. By infusing students with stories of the Gos-pels, listening to the way in which Jesus lived his life in service to the other, by hearing the way in which God’s message of love, justice, and compassion was lived out, and by coming together in prayer and sharing God’s table together, Feetham believed students would not only experience God’s grace but would be filled with desire to serve. Thus, when we ask of a foundation of what we can respond by saying a foundation of a desire to serve. Having determined our foundation of and for what, a few observations. During the Past Student weekend a paradox emerged. Current stu-dents often express questions about the value and future applica-bility of what they do at school. Listening to Past Students it was clear that by taking up various op-portunities given to them at school, whether curricular or co-curricular, or interactions with staff and stu-dents, they were able to make an impact in the communities that

they belonged to. Past Students spoke about key events and per-sons that influenced their lives and how these resulted in the achieve-ments that they made in areas of community or employment. On re-flection, Past Students are able to see, what our current students can often struggle to see. That is, while an isolated topic, or subject may not seem relevant, it is the opportunities and experiences they had during their time at school in developing their mind, body and spirit, as Feetham had envisioned, that enabled them to be active and effective citizens. So, a foun-dation of and for what – a founda-tion of service for the betterment of society, this is what we hope an ASSG education will provide; not just isolated topics, but an overall experience which creates a future of just and compassionate gradu-ates whose service is to others.

RUOK? At the end of Term 3 secondary students raised awareness of R U OK? Day. R U OK? Day is about recognising that we all struggle at times, but we can support each other by checking in and asking “R U OK?” if you notice someone who may be having a hard time. It is also about connecting regularly and meaningfully with family, friends and colleagues.

Students participated in several challenges in the lead up to R U OK? Day to promote awareness of mental health and wellbeing including; making a photo/comic strip showing how you ask someone “R U OK?”, doing a short video interview asking students, “What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?”, and making a poster promoting R U OK? Day.

There were some outstanding responses to the challenges. The activities culminated in celebrating R U OK? Day on the 14th September, with students dressing in yellow and raising $177.80 through donations for the R U OK? Day Foundation. Students also participated in a range of team activities aimed at building and strengthening the relationships between students. These included problem solving, trust activities, drama and duct tape! In fact, by the end of the day we had used a whopping 480 metres of duct tape. It was a fantastic day which couldn’t have happened without the support and enthusiasm of all the staff and students.

If you have any questions or concerns about mental health or wellbeing issues please do not hesitate to speak to a member of the Pastoral Care Team.

Prudence Alice Clarke OAM For service to education

Prue was born in Port Moresby in 1939 and evacuated to Australia during the war. Her parents (Kendall and Prudence) were both active in PNG life, setting up the first radio station 4PM in the 1930s, broadcasting from a curtained-off area of their kitchen. Her father set up the Territory’s telecommunications and was a Coast-watcher during World War 2. Her mother returned to PNG after the war where she was a key figure in gov-ernment administration. Her parents imbued in her a love of teaching and a deep sense of public duty.

Prue attended St Gabriel’s School 1951-57 where she was active in musical and artistic productions. As Pru-dence Frank, she was School Captain in her final year. After gaining a teaching scholarship, Prue taught at Mackay, Moresby and then Canberra. She finished her career as Principal of Ainslie School and as vice-president of the Primary Principals’ Association. She has also been a lecturer for The Commonwealth Insti-tute in London and mentor for trainee teachers at the University of Canberra and the Australian Catholic Uni-versity. Her awards for services to education are nu-merous. They include a Centenary Medal (2002) and the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2007 for service to ed-ucation and the community, particularly as convenor of the ACT Children’s Week Committee. She was a Fel-low of the Australian College of Education and the Australian Council for Educational Leaders. More re-cently, she has been active in Mental Health First Aid and the May Gibbs Children’s Literature Trust. Her ed-ucational expertise is broad: Prue has been involved in teacher recruitment, computer technology in schools and in music education.

Prue married her childhood friend, Kevin Clarke, and together they had four children. She currently resides in Canberra where she is still active in her community.

Doctor Patricia Pepper For service to agricultural science

Pat was born in 1940 at Proserpine where her parents farmed sugar cane and grazed beef cattle. She attend-ed St Gabriel’s School from 1955-57, where she loved the boarding life, but took all her Senior subjects at All Souls’ School. In particular, Pat credits her mathematics teacher, Canon CC Hurt, for encouraging her to pursue science at tertiary level.

Pat graduated in Science in 1962 from the University of Queensland, gaining further degrees in the new field of computing as well as science, before gaining her doctor-ate from the University of Southampton in 1975. She specialised in, and gained a world-wide reputation, in bi-ometrics, system research and simulation modelling. Her work mainly involved the designing, analysing and interpreting of agricultural experiments as well as quan-titative genetics statistics and developing simulation models of agricultural systems. Her research fields were mainly in grazing animals and pastures, but also includ-ed poultry, eucalyptus woodland and tropical fruits. Pat has published over 50 scientific papers as well as many reports and publications. She worked principally with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries and Fish-eries, rising to Director (Biometry). In 2009, she re-ceived an Australia Day Award from the DPIF for out-standing contributions to Queensland primary industries.

In her capacity as the National and the Queensland En-vironment Adviser for the National Council of Women, Pat has used her expertise to write submissions on many topical and contentious areas such as coal seam gas exploration, the Galilee Coal Project, the impact of dredging at Abbot Point and the threat of micro-plastics to marine environments.

In the community, Pat has been active and held execu-tive positions in Australian Federation of University Women – Queensland, Community Aid Abroad, Forum Communicators, Zonta and National Council of Women Queensland. She continues to have a particular interest in advancing the education of women.

Instrumental Music Leslie Croker Instrumental Music Co-ordinator AMEB Results have been received for our AMEB students. Congratulations to all students on the following results:

SHEP - by Harry Kempster On 28 September to the 1 October, the Queensland State Honours Ensemble Program was held down in Brisbane at the Griffith Conservatorium of Music. With 2500 nominees, and only 950 of those accepted, there was much competi-tion to be accepted in the program. However, three students from Charters Towers were fortunate enough to be accepted into the program including Jordan Dietrich (CTSHS), Sophie Baron (CTSHS) and myself. On the opening day of the program, we all got sorted into our Orchestras (Jordan and myself both played in the Gra-ham Lloyd Orchestra) and were given a briefing of the safe-ty precautions and events that would take place before our concert. The conservatorium was fantastic, and the facilities and opportunity it provided was beyond anything I’ve experienced before. Our first rehearsal took place on the stage where our concert was to be performed, while the other Orchestras occupied other rooms in the Conservatorium. We were fortunate enough to be conducted by an international Professor of Music, Dr Chris Hughes. He personally taught me many things about playing in a band that helped me broaden and develop my skills, such as how to tune properly by ear, and many other valuable pieces of advice. During the first rehearsal, all I could think about was how much better than me all the surrounding players were, even though I was put in the First Trumpet section. The music itself was extremely challenging and I was strug-gling to play half the notes in front of me, while others around me seemed to be able to sight read the majority of it comfortably. However, I did not let this discourage me and tried my best to learn the music. Throughout the program, I had the opportunity to catch up with many friends I had made from previous years, as well as making new ones. These workshops are great for this type of thing, because many of us have com-mon interests and get along well.

The following day, our Orchestra moved to the Basil Jones Room, where we rehearsed until the concert. In the two middle days of the program, many of us fatigued and struggled to maintain our concentration; however thanks to the brilliant work of Dr Hughes, we were able to have fun and stay focused while accomplishing great things and developing as an Orchestra. Finally the day of the concert was upon us. After a short warm up, we went backstage and listened to the other Orchestra who sounded brilliant, before it was our turn to perform. The concert was spectacular, and it was really great to look into the audience and see so many proud families and friends of students. After the concert was over, I was greeted by some of my family and friends, including Mrs Goodwin. It was lovely to see Mrs Goodwin and catch up as well as other friends I had not visited for a long time. Overall SHEP Queensland was an absolutely amazing experience! I would like to thank Ms Croker and Mr Mossley for their continued support and presence at the workshop, and Mrs Goodwin for taking time out of her week to watch the performance. FESTIVAL OF BANDS The 6th Annual Charters Towers Festival of Bands (FOB) was held on Thursday 12th October at the World Theatre. This year, 121 students from 7 schools came together to learn and grow as an ensemble and as individuals. Two ensembles were formed and rehearsed during the event: the CT Festival of Bands Combined Wind Symphony, in-volving all 121 students, and the secondary students spent 40 minutes rehearsing an extra two pieces of music to perform in the CT Festival of Bands Secondary Wind Symphony. The students were involved in workshops throughout the day, sight-reading four new pieces of music (six pieces for secondary students), culminating in an evening of entertainment. Harry Kempster, Jackie Koglkia, Kurtis West, Cody Bucklar, Rachel Hall, Kuage Koglkia, Tio Hensley, Kathryne Squair, Alexandra Holt, Xander Nunns, Samuel McCartney and Shelden West were all involved in the workshops; being challenged to refine their own personal skills as well as working within a large ensemble. The students are to be congratulated on their musicianship, effort, and behaviour throughout the rehearsals and concert. Thanks goes to the CT Eisteddfod committee for sponsoring the hire of the World Theatre. Without their generous support, the high standard we have been able to achieve would not be possible. Thanks also to other CT music teachers who supported the event: Ms Elaine Hueber (who also shared the conducting load with me), Mr Caine Wager, Ms Alyssa Priddle, Mrs Wendy Fleming, and Mrs Robyn Dietrich. The money raised from the FOB concert each year is donated to a different charity. This year, we were able to donate $353.65 to the Burrumbuttock Hay Runners.

Work Experience

Glenda Lyon Work Experience Co-ordinator

Term 3 holidays were a busy time for 14 students who participated in the Work Experience Program. Thanks must go to; Charters Towers Businesses: Blossom Shoppe, Dalrymple Villa, Bits for Cars, Bryce Gordon Electrics, Down-time Solutions, NSEW Electrical, as well as Dentist at Health Link, Townsville, Jenny McDonald, Biloela, Gray Street Vet Clinic, Emerald, Inverell Vet Clinic, Inverell NSW, Twine Machinery, Townsville, Betts Creek Station, Pentland, Fitness Institute, Townsville. Their support to our students and school is greatly appreciated.

This is not a compulsory school exercise, although we strongly recommend all students in Years 10, 11 and 12 participate. Year 9 students who choose to participate may find that this helps them decide what subjects they need to select as they approach Senior School and their Career Pathway.

As Work Experience Co-ordinator, I am available to answer questions and assist with placements. If students choose to gain experience, please have them come and speak with me. Work experience has proven to place stu-dents in School Based-Apprenticeships and Traineeships, helping each student with transition at the end of their schooling.

Term 4 holidays is an eight week break, so come and talk with me and see what we can organise for you in your home town or close by.

Ben Zabel attended Fitness Institute in Townsville to assist with his studies in Personal Training.

“Can't speak more highly of Benjamin this week for work experience. He did a great job!”

Isabel Blennerhassett followed her career to Nursing. She participated at Dalrymple Villa and played many Activities with the residents

Danielle Milton tried an Administration role at Bits for Cars. First day back at school an excited Dan-ielle said “ I loved this work, I really did, thank

Rugby Tens Friday 13 and Saturday 14 October saw many of our students involved in the Charters Towers Rugby Union Tens Competition hosted by the Charters Towers Bulls. Despite a short lead up to the carnival our teams trained hard and went into the carnival quietly confident. With a revised format this year, players were pleased that they got to face each of the three other schools. The new format must have suited All Souls St Gabriels as we had our most successful carnival ever, walking away winners in three out of the four grand finals. Our Open Boys coached by Lenny Knuth and managed by Davin Marshall defeated BTC in the final in a dominating performance, 31-5. Our Open Girls, coached by Shannon Lee and managed by Jess Marley also defeated BTC in a nail biter winning 24-20 in the final two minutes of the final. Our 15 year Boys coached by Tony Titley and managed by Charlie Thomson had a hard-fought win against CCC in the final 19-12. Our 13 years team, coached by Bear Travers, fielded a young, inexperienced team that unfortunately did not make it to the final. We are however equally proud of their commitments and never say die attitude. Congratulations to all players involved and a huge thank you to all coaches and managers. Great Job!

Awards Season I know that Mrs Storey has written elsewhere about Awards Day and Preliminary Prizegiving ceremonies which will happen at the end of Term 4. I do not wish to repeat her information but rather provide a snapshot from a sporting perspective. Preliminary Prize Giving will take place on Thursday afternoon, 16 November. At Preliminary Prize Giving we acknowledge the Age Champions for each carnival in addition to the Most Promising Player (12yrs to 15yrs) and Best and Fairest (3rds, 2nds and 1sts) and Most Improved (1st teams only) for our team sports. The ‘Best’ per-formers in each sport along with awards for sportsmanship and endeavour and the House Cup for both Girls and Boys are awarded on Awards Day on Friday 17 November. I look forward to these special occasions.

Cyber Safety The Australian Health curriculum supports students to develop knowledge, understandings and skills to create opportunities and take action to enhance their own and other’s health, well-being and safety.

Young people today are immersed in digital technologies. They use the Internet, mobile phones, tab-lets and other devices to study, so-cialise, exchange ideas and play. While online activity has many ben-efits, there are also risks.

At All Souls, our students safety and well-being is a priority. Helping students to develop appropriate be-haviours when using digital tech-nologies, both at school and home is a responsibility we all share.

I would like to thank Detective Sen-ior Constable Lynette Nelis (CT Child Protection and Investigation Unit) and Senior Constable Trish Machin (CT School Liaison Officer) from the Charters Towers Police Station, for taking time out of their busy schedules to present a cyber-safety information session for our Year 5 and Year 6 students.

The session was very engaging and informative. It provided the stu-dents the opportunity to under-stand the role of the Child Protec-tion and Investigation Unit and dis-cuss some of the legalities and po-tential risks involved with using the Internet and Social Media platforms in a structured and safe environ-ment.

I would also like to thank DSC Lynette Nelis for attending the re-cent JSSG meeting and providing information to parents and guardi-

ans about what they can do to re-duce the risks for their children us-ing the Internet and digital tech-nologies.

Earn & Learn The 267 completed rewards sheets will provide us with some fantastic resources that will complement the teaching and learning programs across the Junior School. Thank you to the School community for supporting this program.

Scholastic Book Fair Reading offers children an authen-tic opportunity to expand their vo-cabulary, practice their reading strategies, inquire about topics of interest and escape to interesting places and enjoy a myriad of ad-ventures. Of course, we know that there is more to the reading equa-tion than just selecting the right book and allocating time to read. We must also foster the conditions that allow and encourage children to read and make time for reading together.

The Scholastic Book Club has been well supported during the year with students (and staff) having the opportunity to purchase rea-sonably priced books and re-sources. The next Book Fair re-turns in Week 5. This will be an ideal opportunity for families to purchase two books for the price of one.

PAGE 15 ISSUE NO 10/2017 23 OCTOBER 2017

The JS is seeking volunteers to ‘open’ the Book Fair before and after school (Monday 30 October – Thursday 2 November). If you are able to help, please place your name on the roster sheet outside the JS Staffroom or email: [email protected]

Planning for 2018 As the end of the School year ap-proaches, we will be planning our class structures and staffing based on the knowledge of current and prospective enrolments. To assist us with this planning, please let us know if your child will not be re-turning to ASSG in 2018.

Additionally, if you know families who are moving to Charters Tow-ers and considering which school would best meet their children’s needs, please suggest they con-

tact Mr Jon Teichmann: [email protected] or by calling the Junior School Of-fice 4788 2242.

Enrolment packs are also available for parents who are looking to en-rol their child in our 2018 Pre-Prep Kindergarten program (3 and 5 Day options are available).

Term 4 - Time to stay focused Term 4 is a very important term for our students. Although there are only 6 weeks until the end of the term, it is important for the students to remain focused on completing the year to their full potential.

Once again we look forward to the continued support of our School community during this term, a very exciting and busy one for us all.

Head of Boarding

Darren Guldbransen

We have made a great start to Term 4 and the first couple of weekends have been busy but very enjoyable for our boarders.

Reunion As has been our practice for many years now, weekend one of Term 4 was reunion weekend for our Past Students. It is always a terrific few days for our school with past stu-dents from many eras returning to catch up with old friends and to see how things have changed. Sat-urday morning’s past v present touch game was eagerly contested this year with the past student team turning out in force to play the current crop. The past stu-dents did win the match although some of the refereeing calls were again questionable. We finished the weekend with the Great De-bate before lunch on Sunday. The Past Students always comment on how things have changed since they were here and they were all impressed with how good the school looks, but many of the old-er generation can’t believe every-one is allowed to walk on the grass now.

Rugby 10s The Inter-School Rugby Tens was played on Friday and Saturday nights of weekend two and our teams performed extremely well

again this year. I think the concept started out as a bit of a social event on the school calendar but it is now a highlight for many of our kids, especially our girls who can’t wait to get into it. Last year we had three teams in finals and only came away with one win, this year though we again had three teams in and won all three. The change to the format this year where all teams played each other once and then the top two went through to the final seemed to suit our teams very well. Our under 15 boys and girls teams both lost one pool game but turned it around in the final.

Air Conditioning I am sure it has felt like an eterni-ty since we announced to our boarders that we were going to air-condition the dormitories but they are all in and were up and running to start the term. Other than a couple of teething problems, which is understandable with a project of this size, they seem to be working well and the kids are all making sure they get maximum benefit, keeping all the doors and windows closed. They have made a massive difference to the feel of the dormi-tory, especially in the afternoon when the boarders come back from school, and while our nights have not been really hot just yet, when they do our kids will still be able to get a good night’s sleep.

That’s it for now.

The weeks are flying by and al-ready we are in week 3. It has been a busy start to the term for our boarders with the first week-end being taken up with the Old Boys Reunion. This is quite a struc-tured weekend for the boys and they are required to do some extra things that don’t always seem rele-vant to them at the time. I com-mend the boys for the way they accepted and engaged in the weekend. This is the attitude I love to see amongst our boys. Many people commented on the good conduct of our boarders. Well done. The past weekend we have had the Inter-School Rugby Tens tour-nament and as usual it was a hotly contested event. The format was different this year with the tourna-ment being spread over two days. The 13s boys and 15s boys played three fixture games on Friday and then on Saturday the girls and open boys played their fixture games. The four finals games were played last to cap off a great two days. Souls didn’t qualify for the 13 boys finals but made it into the 15s boys, girls and open boys. We managed to win all three finals games and it was certainly the most successful campaign in a long time. The boys who competed from Page dorm were: 13 Years Hugh Barnicoat, Owen Elliott, Zai Hopkins and Jed Marshall 15 Years Kevin Rea, Michael Meteyard, Tom Marshall Open Boys Kade Banset, Ky Banset, Noel Bridges, Duncan Elliott, Caleb Knuth, Adam Hensley, Brent Marshall Congratulations to all those boys!

PAGE 17 ISSUE NO 10/2017 23 OCTOBER 2017

The term already feels like its flying by and it isn’t long until we will have the bittersweet task of fare-welling our seniors. It is always a sad time but also exciting to see another group of young men ready to move onto the next stages of their lives. This group of seniors have been particularly good as leaders in the dormitory and they have set a high standard for next years seniors to follow. The current Year 11s have applied for leader-ship positions and they now have to deal with the anticipation of who will get what position. Best wishes to all those who have applied to be leaders next year. Please contact me with any con-cerns you have with your son/s in boarding.

Ramsay Dormitory Brendan Travers Senior Resident TENS SUCCESS!! On the weekend All Souls partici-pated in the annual Rugby Tens competition. It was an extremely successful weekend for all the play-ers involved with the Open boys and 15 Years both winning their re-spective age groups. Ramsay had too many players take part to name here, however a special mention is due for Albert Luke, who scored the winning try, in the final seconds of the 15 years final to take out a memorable win against a much fancied opposition. Well done Albie. Also a special mention is deserved for Ramsay’s four 13 years representatives, Lachlan Lathwell, Pita Rabuka, Bai-ley Geesu and Rily Goodwin. Wins have been tough to come by for this age group and it was another tough night at the office for them.

However, I am yet to see this age group lose a game on effort. De-spite the adversity they face they continue to show up for one anoth-er, continue to improve, and if not for the lucky bounce of a ball late in the game would have recorded their first victory in All Souls col-ours. Success is not far away for these boys if they continue to work as hard as they have done all year. Best of luck in the future boys. Reunion On the first weekend back we had our annual Past Student’s week-end. Another fantastic weekend for all involved and another fine exam-ple of the passion our past stu-dents have for this school. I was lucky to be in attendance on the Friday night and chatted to a num-ber of people from my father’s class of 77, some of which he had-n’t seen since they finished Year 12. I also chatted to a 91 year old who attended All Souls way back during WWII. It is always interest-ing listening to the changes to the school over the years but more im-portantly, it is inspiring to know that after 74 years, someone can still be so attached to a small school in North Queensland. Thank you to everyone involved but in particular to the students who once again displayed fantastic school spirit and conducted themselves admirably. Weekend Leave I would like to finish with a remind-er to all parents when organising weekend leave for their sons that I require written permission in the form of an email or text if they are to go on leave with anyone other than parents. This is just a techni-cality that has begun to slip in re-cent times, but it is so vital for me to be able to cross the T’s and dot the I’s. Your assistance in this mat-ter is greatly appreciated. That’s all from Ramsay for now, as always, anyone wishing to get in touch in regards to your son, please feel free to do so via email or phone.

Jenny Cantle Senior Resident I am not going to start this report reminding everyone that we are already into week three, as I am sure that we are all aware that the year is whizzing past. The girls re-mind me on a daily basis how many days we have left. Not that we don’t enjoy it here with every-thing that goes on. The girls enjoyed interacting with the Past Students on reunion weekend, and learning how good they have it these days. Air-conditioning in the dorms, and much more freedom than the Past Students had. Second weekend in dorm was all about Ruby Tens. With a warm up of an impromptu dance off on Fri-day night (these girls really can dance up a storm). Saturday saw Green Dorm off to watch the Rug-by, which saw four of the Becket girls playing. We have some well-earned battle scars. The girls played hard and walked away win-ning. Well done to all the children who played, it was a wonderful two days. The seniors are busy organising the christmas party for the dorm, with the children picking their se-cret Santa. As well as the party, the dorm is full of graduation talk, and how many days the seniors have left. The Year 11’s attended leadership days for two days, all agreeing that they are ready to be the leaders of the school.

With all the fun in the dorms, we must not forget that we do have work to do. We have a full calen-dar ahead of us, but I am sure the girls will knuckle down and the weeks will fly by.

Just a reminder that before the

girls go out on leave I need it in

writing.

Alban Dormitory Teneil Smale Senior Resident Welcome Alban dormitory has been a hive of activity and excitement since re-turning from holidays. We wel-come Tayah Hopkins in Year 11 to the dorm and we welcome back our Tara Yung who was greatly missed during her absence. Souls Spirit Many of our girls are involved in Inter-School Softball, Mixed Touch, Junior Touch and Rugby Tens. Rugby Tens has been popular with our girls and as I write this Jesse, Isabel, Chanielle, Tayla, Tahlia and Tara are inflicting huge hits on their BTC opponents. Their com-mitment to training has resulted in a tremendous finals win 24 to BTC’s 20. I am also pleased to re-port that Alban girls did not have any major injuries only a few bumps and bruises, which they are wearing with pride. Congratula-

tions to all our competitors, we are proud of the way you conducted yourselves. It is clear that our Souls spirit is well and truly alive. 2017 Seniors With a mix of excitement and a few butterflies, Jesse, Gayleen and Isabel are counting the days be-fore they step out into the real world. While they are a little nerv-ous, I am truly confident that this amazing group of girls will succeed at whatever they put their mind to. They will be remembered for dis-playing maturity beyond their years and their wonderful ability to support others to reach their full potential. 2018 Seniors As they prepare to depart, the next group of seniors prepare for their final year as leaders of our school by attending the leadership days in Townsville and Centenary Park. Tayla, Tayah, Tahlia and Sa-rah worked well together during the team building activities and we look forward to seeing how they will be remembered.

P & F News Annette Hall P & F Secretary P & F Calendar Due to a number of factors, including time constraints with printing completion prior to the recent Reunion Weekend, it had been decided to not go ahead with a 2018 P & F Calendar. As one of the organisers of the origi-nal calendar project, Kym Whelan has since volunteered to take on the task of putting together a 2019 P & F Cal-endar, with a view to having it ready for sale next year. With P & F to now fund the venture single-handedly, there will be no further calls for sponsorship expressions of interest from the community. Wish List Our ASSG P & F Association is looking at ticking off some of the items currently sitting on our Wish List - that list of 'big ticket items' that, with input from staff, we come up with each year so that we are better able to target those areas in need of more significant financial contribution. Some of the Wish List items presently under con-sideration include: Arts program/2018 Musical contribution; Athletics storage shed, replacement hurdles and trailers for athletic equipment; playground and sandpit toys for JS playground; JS Library books and seating, JS portable and battery-operated PA system; shaded and non-shaded tables and bench seats; technology equip-ment contribution and additional marquees. Preliminary Prize-Giving P & F Function In previous years, P & F have held an end-of-year get-together at Henry's Restaurant immediately following the Awards Day ceremony at the World Theatre. After the closure of Henry's earlier this year, P & F have decided to hold an alternative function immediately following the Preliminary Prize-giving ceremony, Thursday 16 November, at All Souls St Gabriels School. This year's gathering will be held in the old School gym and will consist of finger foods, free ice-blocks for the students and tea and coffee. Soft drinks and slushies will also be available for pur-chase. 2018 Executive Positions It is still a number of months until our AGM is due to be held early in the 2018 school year, when all Executive positions become vacant, but now is a good time to consider the possibility of taking on a role. If you have a mind to put your hand up, please don't let distance deter you. It has been ten years since I first took on a role in the ASSG P & F Executive and it, as has every Executive before and since, had many of its parent members (myself included) based outside of Charters Towers and/or with boarding students.
