A LONG AND DIFFICULT TERM There is no doubt that this term has test-ed our resili-ence and strength as a community.

My sincere thanks go out to the Pastoral

Team who have worked tirelessly in difficult circumstances. We are truly blessed to have such a professional team. Thanks also to those in the school and general community who have gone out of their way to sup-port us. On a personal note, I would like to thank the Heads of the other Charters Towers schools for looking out for my wellbeing, it is greatly appreciated.

It is now time for a well-deserved break as we prepare for semester two.

STUDENTS Scholarships Congratulations to Amber Aspinall and Sean Smith, both Year 11, who have been awarded a scholarship to attend the Queensland Universi-ty of Technology (QUT STEM) Camp during the holidays. This is a highly sought after, and competi-tive, scholarship.

Cattle Club Cattle Club students attended cattle judging at the Dalrymple Saleyards on Friday 8 June before heading out to the Winton Show where they performed well. The next outing for the team will be the Charters Tow-ers Show at the start of next term.

Athletics Congratulations to all the athletes who took part in the Inter-House Athletics carnival this week. A spe-cial thanks to Miss Pia Taylor and Miss Melissa Browne for organising the carnivals.

Good luck Confraternity and QISSN After all the hard work and train-ing throughout the year, the Con-fraternity & QISSN carnivals for rugby league and netball are final-ly here. during this term’s sport. It was a difficult term but you equipped yourself well. Congratulations to the Inter-School teams with two outright premierships and one equal first for both Rugby League and Netball. Touch premierships were won by Gabes Firsts, Souls Firsts, Gabes Black & Souls White. Whilst we all know that success in team sports is only possible when all contribute to the fullest, it was great to see four individual stu-dents recognised for their achieve-ments. Well done Tim, Summah, Jayme and Breanne. Winter Music Concert: A winter music concert was held in the Chapel on the evening of the 15 June. The concert featured the Year 11 and 12 Music and Music Extension students who performed pieces for their assessment. The Stage band also performed. Thanks to those staff and students who supported the performers. STAFF Current staff Miss Melea Ballantyne will be leav-ing us at the end of the semester after finishing her contract cover-ing a maternity leave position. We thank her for her contributions in both the classroom and on the sporting field. We also farewell our GAP staff Lu-kas, Thilo and Mateo and wish them well as they head home. We congratulate Mr Ian Dietrich who has been appointed to the position of Deputy Principal. Mr Dietrich will continue in his role as Academic Dean as well as take an active role in our strategic thinking and planning. Ian is a very experi-enced educator and has worked at this level for many years. New staff Ms Samantha Mitchell will join the HPE Department from around week 4 next term as she is moving from the UK. She is an experi-enced teacher who is passionate about her subject and her students and has a bubbly personality. EVENTS Shows As we approach the holidays, the country show season in our area has begun to slow down. Staff en-joy getting out and meeting fami-lies but it is quite tiring being on the road. I am very grateful for the work of Mr Jon Teichmann

who took on extra visits when I was unable to leave the school. Thanks also to Mrs Tracy Maff for her support and for attending the Richmond Field Days. This term the school visited Longreach, Cler-mont, Hughenden, Richmond, Winton and Cloncurry. ICPA State Conference Mrs Fleming and myself recently attended the ICPA State Confer-ence in Winton. Congratulations to the organising committee and the locals who put together a great conference and looked after us so well. The work of the ICPA in striv-ing for equality of educational op-portunities for all Australian chil-dren, no matter where they live, is of vital importance. The 2019 con-ference will be in Charters Towers and I would encourage you to show your support by assisting in any way possible when volunteers are called for. Literature Festival 2019: The school will host a Literature Festival from 25-27 April, 2019, ti-tled “Authors with Soul”. This exciting project will support our school wide focus on reading and will be open to other schools in the region. I thank Mr Charlie Thomson for his hard work and vi-sion to re-establish this Festival.

Deputy Ian Dietrich In the last edition of Phoenix Ris-ing I referred to the academic ‘seasons’ of a term. It certainly did heat up in the academic world …while the actual weather did cool down quite quickly. Since the last edition of our newsletter, I have seen each of our hard working and dedicated teaching staff frantically reviewing drafts of assessment items, returning them to students in a very timely fashion, setting exams, marking exams, moderat-ing results and competing reports. All of this was taking place while preparations were underway for the Athletics Carnival, Alternative Program activities, Parent Infor-mation Evening and planning for Term 3.

End of Term Exam Blocks It was rather surprising to note the number of parents who did not know about the dates for the end of term exam block. Please note the remaining exam block dates for this year listed in this edition of the newsletter. These dates are also listed in the school calendar and have been since the start of the year to assist with planning. It would be appreciated if medical appointments could be avoided during these dates. Semester Reporting This set of reports in the senior school will follow the same format as previous semesters, with only a few alterations. Instrumental Music and Learning Support reports will continue to be included on the document and the Service and Extra-Curricular report will simply be a list of events. Only the Captains of Firsts or Open Teams/Squads (not younger grades) will be listed after the item in brackets. This has been done to streamline the process of reporting and allow for one document to be emailed home in a timely manner for family discussions during holi-days. A comment will still be included in the report by your son / daughter’s Tutor Teacher. This will focus on their ability to follow the school uniform policy, punctuality to morning tutor sessions, use of the student diary and general attitude toward their schooling. The Semester Reports for each subject will include an effort rat-ing, criteria/dimension grades and an overall grade for this semester of work. Each subject will also have a subject semester overview (common to all students in that subject in that year level) and an individual comment on academic progress, application and behav-iour from the classroom teacher. Please note; the Semester Report for Year 12 students does not take into account work from Semesters 1 & 2 (Year 11) of the two year course. If a student in Year 12 moves to a new subject at the end of this semester, results from Year 11 will need to be used to calcu-late an ‘exit’ result. This may be different from the isolated Semes-ter Three (Year 12 Semester One) result recorded on this report.

Year 10 into Senior It was great to meet with so many families on Monday night at the Year 10 into Senior Subject Infor-mation Night. It was a good op-portunity to discuss the new sen-ior system and for families to speak with senior teachers about the new senior subjects. A reminder to all families of stu-dents in Year 10. A completed 2018 Year 10 into Senior ASSG Subject Choice Form needs to be returned to the school by the due date: 8.15am Tuesday 24 July (Term 3 day one for students). Completed forms can be either de-livered in person to Student Ser-vices, or scan and email the com-pleted document to Flo King: [email protected] The information gathered by the school on the document is very important as it allows the School Senior Leadership Team to gauge the viability of some subjects in the senior curriculum and to con-tinue to plan for next year’s school timetable and staffing require-ments. Please note that according to the indication by Year 10 students in the first round of subject selection, some classes (especially the prac-tical subjects) will fill VERY quick-ly. Priority will be given to stu-dents who returned their Subject Selection Forms on time and showed good work habits (application to class and home-work, safe work practices in prac-tical classes, etc) during their study of the subject area in Year 10, 2018.

May I also take this opportunity to remind you that if you need to get additional information re subjects or courses for senior, please feel free to phone and speak with the relevant Head of Department, a member of the School Careers Guidance Team, or myself.

A busy term This term has been a busy term with many mixed emotions. I thank students, staff, parents and sup-porters of the School for your ef-forts great and small to support our students in the academic, sporting, cultural and pastoral realms. I hope everyone enjoys a well-earned and relaxing break over the holiday period.

Beginning of Term 3 Next term will begin with travel day on Monday July 23rd with clas-ses commencing Tuesday 24th Ju-ly. A reminder for all secondary students that the uniform for the first day will be formal uniform.

Parent –Teacher Interviews Interviews will be conducted from 12:00–2:00pm on travel day, 23rd July. If you wish to book an ap-pointment with your child’s teacher during either of these timeslots could you please contact Jon Teichmann or Flo King via email: [email protected] [email protected] or phone the School office.

CT Show Holiday We will celebrate the Charters Towers Show with a holiday on Tuesday 31st July. There will be no school on this day.

Combined Schools Formal As I have written previously, Year 11 and 12 students from ASSG, CCC, BTC and CTSHS will enjoy an evening of Bollywood glamour at the Combined Schools Formal, to be hosted by ASSG on Friday 27th July (first Friday of Term 3). Tick-ets are currently on sale and can be purchased from Main Admin or Student Services either in person or over the phone until the close of business on Monday 23rd July. I look forward to seeing many stu-dents in attendance. Tickets are only available for current students of the four schools.

Week 11 Workshops Charlie Thomson Head of English Students from Years 9-12 enjoyed participating in workshops with Caitlin Strongarm. Caitlin facilitat-ed workshops in Drama and spe-cial fx makeup. Caitlin is a multi-disciplinary artist and facilitator; her workshops weave clown, street performance, cabaret and mime and take foun-dation in her childlike approach to play and imagination.

A time for rest and recreation Term 2 has certainly been a long and demanding one. It is therefore important that we take time to rest and recreate. As we approach the end of a semester that has re-quired a great deal of our emo-tional and spiritual energy we need to ensure that we take time to “recharge the batteries;” so to speak. As holidays approach it is a good opportunity to think about what gives our mind, body and spirit a boost. For me, I look for-ward to some quiet time as well as a few movie marathons. I enjoy getting lost in a good drama or ac-tion movie. I know others who like to get out into the open; walking, running, gardening. Others I know will look forward to devour a few books, and possibly some nice food. Whatever it is we do, it is the opportunity to replenish the energy many have used and then some so that we can rebuild our emotional and spiritual selves. I am aware that not everyone will be able to take full advantage of the break as, for some, work must go on. Even in the midst of that busyness I trust there can be time for renewal. Confirmation This year’s Confirmation is planned to take place on Friday 7 Septem-ber. This year will be a particularly important one. The service will be officiated by Bishop Bill and it will be his last service with us as Bish-op of North Queensland. Bishop and Dr Ray have been extremely supportive of the school and our activities. Together they have worked hard to nurture and strengthen relationships between the school and the Anglican Church of NQ. I encourage all stu-dents and parents to discuss mak-ing their Confirmation as Bishop and Dr Ray join us for the final time in an official capacity.

PAGE 4 ISSUE NO 7/2018 28 JUNE 2018

Confirmation is an important Rite in a person and the Church’s life. It is an occasion for those making their Confirmation to publicly state that they seek to model God’s un-conditional love for others as demonstrated in the words and ac-tion of Jesus. That is, they seek to establish justice where there is in-justice, so show compassion where there is pain and suffering, to stand up for the marginalised and oppressed, to speak out when others are made silent, fight for the rights of those who are denied them. Through Confirmation, the Bishop calls for the person to be filled with the Holy Spirit who gives them the wisdom, courage and fortitude to do what is right even when no one is watching. Those who have previously been Baptised are strongly encouraged to make their Confirmation. At Baptism parents and godparents are charged with raising the child in the community of faith and bring them for Confirmation. While Confirmation is not a requirement to be a leader in the school one of the pledges made by prefects is that they will regularly make their Communion – Confirmation then is their decision to be participants in the receiving of the elements of Communion. The role of chapel prefect has taken on a particularly significant role in the life of our school community. This has includ-ed serving at the altar and distrib-uting the chalice. Those consider-ing the role of Chapel Prefect are strongly encouraged to be Con-firmed. Students, staff and parents who wish to be Confirmed but have not been Baptised may still do so. In this case we will organise for them to be Baptised as well. Preparation for Confirmation will take place early in Term 3. Please contact me if you have any ques-tions or would like to register your interest.

Pastoral Care Team

Taking Care Over the Holidays The holidays are almost upon us again. After a long term our students are ready for a break and most are looking forward to some time spent with parents, families and friends. For some however, the change from school to home may mean spending time away from their usual friends and supports, may result in greater feelings of isola-tion and disconnection. Headspace has provided the following tips to help support your young person over the holidays: 1. Encourage them to stay connected. Social relationships are important to your young person ’s gen-eral wellbeing. It is okay if they take time out for themselves at times, but encourage them to keep in contact with friends over the holidays. Friends can provide both play and support, and spending time with friends is also im-portant for keeping and building on existing friendships. 2. Encourage them to stay involved. Encourage involvement w ith volunteer work, hobbies, clubs or committees, or sports – these can help young people feel connected to their wider community. Participate with them when you can. Involve them in decisions and give them responsibility at home (e.g. deciding what to eat for dinner and helping to prepare it). 3. Encourage physical activity. Physical activity is important for everyone ’s health and wellbeing. Find a physical activity that you both enjoy and can do together (e.g. swimming, playing sports with friends or cycling) and make a plan to do it regularly. 4. Encourage a regular routine. Getting a good night ’s sleep helps young people to feel energised, focused and motivated. Adolescence is a time when a number of changes to the “body clock” impact on sleeping patterns and young people are more likely to have problems with sleep. Developing a sleeping routine can help. Encourage your young person to wake up around the same time each day, get out of bed when they wake up, and go to bed around the same time each night. Avoiding caffeine after lunchtime, having a quiet, dark and uncluttered bedroom and shutting down electronic devices before bed can also help them to get a good night’s sleep. 5. Encourage healthy eating habits. Eating well doesn ’t only reduce the risk of physical health problems, like heart disease and diabetes, but it can also help with sleeping patterns, energy levels, mood, and general health and wellbeing. 6. Encourage play! Devoting time to just having fun can help to recharge your young person ’s battery, revitalise their social networks and reduce stress and anxiety. Sport News Pia Taylor Acting Secondary Sports Co-ordinator Inter-House Athletics What a way to finish a massive term! Inter-House Athletics has come and gone again for another year. Well done to all our competitors who competed to the best of their abilities and showed great sportsmanship. I would like to say a big thank you to the grounds staff who put in a lot of time and effort into the preparation and set-up of the carnival and thank you to all the staff that help run the events. A big thank you also to the P and F for running the food and drinks vans. Without all these people we wouldn’t have the successful carnival that we have. We now look forward to next term to the Inter-School Athletics carnival which will be held in week 4 on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th of August. A list of the Inter-School Athletics team will be published in the next edition of the Phoenix Rising. Age Champions House Champion

Early in June, three intrepid Gold and Silver expeditioners completed their trial expedition with a mix of hiking, cycling and exploring along the Lol-worth Creek Road.

The weather proved ideal for the expedition, with cool days and even a tail wind to assist the journey. However, the nights were chilly, getting down to two degrees on Lolworth Creek. Thankfully a roaring fire kept everyone warm. Zak was our highly effective fire warden who ensured no one else was burned.

We have many people to thank: Yvonne Schaefer who loaned bikes; Alan Shadforth of Towers Toys who repaired bikes; Jack and Yasmin Mann who allowed us to see Red Falls; Warren and Mary Jackson who allowed us to camp at the Lolworth; and Kim Donaldson who was our helper, driver and chef de camp.

News from the Humanities Department On Friday 8 June, the Year 10 HASS (Humanities and Social Science) classes went to Townsville to visit the Army Museum North Queensland at Jezzine Barracks located on Kissing Point.

The Museum is a hidden treasure and full of artefacts and information from the Great War to modern conflicts. It is well worth a visit as you explore the modern walking trails and fortifications that remain from when Queensland feared an invasion by Russia and other perceived enemies.

Students were kept engaged with workbooks and an informative tour by knowledgeable guides. The visit com-plemented our current studies of Australia’s involvement in World War 2. Our thanks goes to AMNQ

Instrumental Music Leslie Croker Instrumental Music Co-ordinator State Honours Ensemble Program Congratulations to Kathryne Squair who was selected to attend the Middle School State Honours Ensemble Pro-gram (SHEP) held in Townsville from 22-24 June. SHEP is a program run by Griffith University Conservatorium of Music. The highest standard of students from Year 5-8 are nominated for the program by teachers all around North Queensland, and a select number are chosen to attend. Kathryne was one of 150 students to attend this year. Band Concert On Wednesday 27th June, our Year 7 classes and Concert and Stage Band students travelled to Hughenden to put on a concert. The concert was a celebration of the impressive progress the Year 7 students have made on the band instruments they have been learning in classroom music this semester. The Year 7 Band, Junior Concert Band, Senior Concert Band and Stage Band all played a selection of pieces they have been working on throughout the term. Congratulations to all students who performed.

How Time Flies This semester has been filled with lots of engaging learning and high quality extra-curricular activities. It is uplifting to hear the students talk about how they learn and not just what they learn. Focusing on learn-ing skills and using a variety of strategies to find and use infor-mation, provides opportunities for our students to consolidate and build on their achievements as strong, active learners. When reflecting on the events of Term 2, it is no wonder our stu-dents (and staff) are a little ex-hausted and ready for the semes-ter break. The following are just a few of the many academic, extra-curricular and community events that have kept us all very busy. “The Wiz” musical; ANZAC Day; Two Cross Country events; Inter-House Athletics Carnival; Junior School Support Group

Mother’s Day Stall; NAPLAN Popcorn, pizza and pop-

per party; Year 4’s excursion to Billabong

Sanctuary; National Simultaneous Storytime

a whole School reading event; ICAS Science paper; Under 8’s Day; Junkyard Beats performance at

the World Theatre; Inter-School sports; Charters Towers at the North

Queensland trials; Touch Football and Rugby Union

clinics; NRL State of Origin free dress

day to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House;

Class performances at the Junior School Assemblies.

Throughout all these (and many more) occasions we have contin-ued to reinforce what it means to be an All Souls St Gabriels student – someone who is respectful and: Always learning and having a sense of purpose and direction in all that we do; Serving others by demonstrat-ing a sense of compassion and friendship; Staying safe and accepting re-sponsibility for our actions; Going forward by being resil i-ent and persevering to be the best we can be.

PAGE 10 ISSUE NO 7/2018 28 JUNE 2018

It is a credit to the excellent part-nership between the School and our community that these events and others which have occurred this term ran so smoothly and with such great outcomes for the stu-dents.

Inter-House Athletics At ASSG we value ‘striving for our personal best’ and the Athletics Carnival is one of the many events in our School calendar where we recognise students for their out-standing athletic endeavour and great sportsmanship. It was great to see the team spirit shown by students from all Houses during the Junior School Inter-House Ath-letics Carnival last term.

Thank you, Miss Browne for the planning and preparation that went into the program. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the Grounds and Maintenance staff for preparing the ovals for the track and field events. Thanks to the Junior School staff and Gap staff for their energy, enthusiasm and assistance throughout the carnival. A special mention and thanks must also go to the Secondary Students and staff who assisted Junior School staff with the running of the events. The day was a great suc-cess. Congratulations to Alban and Feetham Houses who won the indi-vidual, and Page & Chad who won overall.

We wish all our athletes the best of luck for their events at the 2018 Primary Inter-School Athletics Car-nival at ASSG on Friday, 3 August.

Under 8’s Day Great weather made for another sensational Under 8’s Day. The Year 6 students and Year 4 and 5 Student Representatives did a magnificent job of hosting a morn-ing packed full of activities for the young children. It was lovely to see so many ‘Little Souls’ children and families from the Charters Towers community join in with All Souls St Gabriels’ students in the variety of fun activities.

Thank you to everyone involved in creating a special morning for the young children.

Reader’s Cup On Thursday, 14 June, Matilda Peagham, Amber Ferguson and Samuel McCartney, travelled to Townsville with Mrs Toohey and Mrs Peagham to compete against other regional primary school stu-dents for the prestigious Readers Cup. It was an invaluable experi-ence for the students and although St Joseph’s Catholic School, The Strand, took the primary school honours on the night, we are very proud of how our team represent-ed All Souls St Gabriels School. Thank you, Mrs Toohey and Mrs Peagham for the encouragement and support you gave our team.

It is always great to see students enthusiastic and keen to read, as reading has so many positive out-comes which are critical to aca-demic success.

Junkyard Beats It was wonderful to hear the stu-dents’ reviews of the very enter-taining performance: “Junkyard Beats”. Students and staff were thoroughly entertained by a mix of upbeat, creativity and fun.

Viewing live theatre is an essential part of our English and Arts curric-ulum. Being able to access quality live theatre in our community is in-valuable. We thank the World The-atre for continuing to provide these opportunities for students in Char-ters Towers.

Thanks also to the Junior School Support Group for making it afford-able for all our students in Prep to Year 6 to experience the wonder and excitement of live theatre. From all reports, it was an energet-ic and entertaining performance.

Gap Staff Auf Wiedersehen Thilo & Lukas, Adios y buena suerte Mateo Sadly, we say goodbye to our Gap Staff, Thilo Meier, Lukas Hilmer and Mateo Luzuriaga.

Happy Holidays I would like to conclude by ac-knowledging the staff, parents, family members and the wider community who are committed to ensuring the best educational, spir-itual, emotional and physical well-being of our students. I thank each member of our School community for their commitment, work and support during Term 2.

Hopefully everyone will have the opportunity to rest or at least enjoy a slower pace over the next few weeks. We have lots planned for next term, including the Inter-School Athletics Carnivals, the Charters Towers Show, Eisteddfod and the Year 6 trip to Canberra.

I look forward to seeing everyone’s rested and smiling faces on Tues-day 24 July.

Cattle Club

Tearna Wilson & Dakota Gough Year 12 & Year 10

The Cattle Club had an early start on Friday 8th June, all keen for the first Young Judges Competition, held at the CT Saleyards. Here we saw our Cattle Club students come up against multiple students from Columba and the Charters Towers School of Distance Education. We judged four commercial bullocks with April Dixon taking out first and a one-point difference to second place which Tearna Wilson took out. We then headed to Winton for the Show and af-ter a long time sitting on the bus with Tearna's music and the Finger twin’s requests we finally arrived.

We were lucky enough to be accommodated at the CWA hall in Winton and after a good dinner and some quick un-packing we fell right asleep. Saturday came rolling around quickly as we got ready we had Brandon Finger cook us a hearty meal. We headed over to the show grounds and started with Bull Judging. After a short break, we then went into the Cattle Handler's class, followed by the Weight classes then Horse and Heifer Judging Competitions. We then had a bit of break and a chance to relax before presentations.

As four o'clock came, presentations got underway. We were excited to hear Luke Stevens had placed fourth, Char-lotte Deem third and Dakota Gough second in the Handler's Class. Brandon Finger took out second and Dakota Gough placed first in the Heifer Judging competition. In the Bull Judging Competition Tearna Wilson came third and Dakota Gough tied second with a Columba student. Additionally, Dakota Gough also took out 3rd for Horse Judging. Lastly, Camden Finger, Dakota Gough, April Dixon and Tearna Wilson took out the top four places in the Led Weight Division Class, as well as Dakota taking out first Overall for her age division and April taking out the Encouragement award. Everyone competed very well over the weekend and we look forward to doing the same at Charters Towers show.

At the end of a very long day we then headed back to the CWA hall for showers and dinner before heading back over to the show for the night. Here we had the opportunity to go on the very few rides that were there, have a look around and watch what was going on in the main arena. As we got there we were watching the father vs son motorbike barrel race. Over the loud speaker we heard a call being put out for a dash for cash by age groups, and we convinced the Finger twins to go into it. Their age group was called, and they were steaming from the start line, they were head to head the whole way leaving the rest of the group behind, all you could hear was Charters Towers cheering for the two boys. Towards the end Camden finally took the lead and fell diving over the finishing line getting a bit of a taste of Winton dirt. To say the least the Finger twins became immediately well known, sup-ported by a very loud Charters Towers cheer squad consisting of All Souls and Columba students.

Everyone had an enjoyable weekend. None of this would be possible without those who organised this for us. We would like to say a big thank you Lionel and Glenysis who took us to the Young Judges at the saleyards ,and to Winton for supervising us on a great weekend. Also, we would like to offer a sincere thanks to the kitchen staff for providing us with food for the weekend, and to the school for allowing us to participate in these events.

Horse Club

Charlee Keleher Year 11

On 22nd May, a few girls went to a nutrition clinic at the Charters Towers Racecourse. The girls learnt about ingredi-ents to avoid when looking at feeding horses and what extra nutrients horses should have. Also, we learnt about what specific types of feed to give a horse during exercise. Sarah Suhr won the “Best Question Prize” and all the girls found the night very informative.

For the past few weeks, the Equestrian Team have been working hard every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon pre-paring for the Hughenden show on the 2nd and 3rd of June. Some of our members have put in a bit more time to set up a jump course in the horse arena which paid off as the girls went well at the Hughenden Show. Sarah Suhr received two Reserve Champion awards for both the Local and Age Rider classes along with placing second in the Novice and Preliminary Dressage Competitions. She also received first places for the following events; Registered Led classes, Rider classes, Mare Hacks and Local Hack classes. Angela Jones received first places in three types of Hacks, second in another two Hack competitions. She also placed third in the Bareback Equestrian and Handy Hack classes, second in Rider Classes and forth in the Preliminary Dressage test. Angela also did very well in the Jumping Competitions. Now we have a few weeks to prepare for the Charters Towers show on the first weekend back at school in term 3.

Page Dormitory Davin Marshall Senior Resident As I reflect on the trials of a long and emotionally draining term I find I am very happy with the way the boys have conducted them-selves. Despite the disruptions to routines and the grief many of them felt over the loss of a friend, they have managed to find the strength within themselves to rise to the occasion when they needed to. They have also allowed them-selves to have some time out dur-ing the term to recharge and re-build their reserves. The leadership in the dormitory has continued to be excellent and the older boys are to be commended on the stand-ards they have set.

The Inter-house Athletics caps off a busy and physically demanding term of sport for our boys and they will no doubt relish the opportunity to relax and let any niggling inju-ries heal. Next term sees club sport continue and Inter-school athletics will be the main focus when they return. We have had a high level of involvement in sporting activities by the boys in our dormitory and it is pleasing to see the culture of just getting in and having a go whatever the result may be. It has also been great to see Tahl and Adam involved in the Air Cadets with Brother Nathan. They have found a way to be involved in something good away from sport and they are learning invaluable skills in organization and leader-ship. Well done boys!

I am keen to see the Year 11s begin to step up and show us the style of leadership they are going to provide next year. The current leaders will be gone before we know it and the baton will be passed on. We have a high stand-ard in our dormitory at the mo-ment and I know they have what it takes to maintain the culture we have grown here.

It has been a privilege to be a part of boarding again this term and as always, if you have any concerns regarding your son please contact me.

Thank you for your forbearance in helping us empty out the dormitory completely for the Confraternity Carnival being held in Charters Towers this holidays. It is appreci-ated.

We have finally made it to the end of the semester and a very long term 2. This term has been a rollercoaster of emotions for all the boys in Ramsay with the passing of one of their own, Jackie Koglkia. This not only was a massive loss to his family and the school, but a very personal bereavement to all the boys in Ramsay house. We have all paid our respects and each member of the dorm has dealt with it in their own way.

This term has been a very busy but rewarding term for all. We have seen our boys strive to better themselves both on the sporting fields and on an academic level. Kodi Boalar and Rolland Geesu should both be very proud of themselves for making the Towns-ville district Rugby Union “Brolgas” team. Sesoni Koroi represented NQ School Boys at Rugby Union and congratulations to Brock John-son who will now go on to play in the “NQ Marlins” team for under 16 Rugby League. The boys have focused on their time management skills this term learning to utilise prep time and prioritise their aca-demic commitments before other activities. This has been great to see as it has helped to minimise stress and negative behaviour.

Our Ramsay Seniors are doing their part in our dorm really well, maintaining routine and leading by example. The move of our Year 9 boys into the junior wing has been a success with them getting the extra sleep but also giving them a little more responsibility as the older boys in that area. This week the Ramsay boys will come together as a force to be reckoned with at our Inter-House Athletics Carnival. They are deter-mined to bring their skills together and participate at every point pos-sible. Good luck!

It is rewarding to all to see a sense of pride and brotherhood surrounding the Ramsay House boys this term and I look forward to this continuing throughout the year.

I wish you all a safe trip home and hope you enjoy a well-deserved holiday.

Feetham Dormitory

First semester is all but done and dusted which means we are now half way through the year. I know a lot of the boys are excited and can’t wait to get home and do what they love doing and I would like to wish them all a safe and fun holi-day. Feetham dorm has had a great 2nd term and I’m very proud of the boy’s efforts in and out of the dorm. They have all handled this long and stressful term very well.

Our school footy season is now fin-ished and I would like to point out some of the great efforts from some of the boys in Feetham. Kye Smollet showed that he is willing to learn and showed a massive im-provement as the season went on; great work Kye. Ethan Cowan gives 100% every time he pulls on his Souls jersey. Casey Flanagan has shown us that he is ready to go to Confro. A couple of weeks ago we went over to CCC for the last footy game for the school season. Our first boys played some very tough football and came away with a great win. Well done boys, what a great way to finish a tough footy season at Souls. We now move on-to Confro and I would like to wish both our boys and girls teams all the best. We have our Inter-House Athletics on today and tomorrow and I know that the Feetham boys are looking to go out and get an-other win so they are that little bit closer to winning the House Cup at the end of the year. Good luck and ‘Go Feetham’. Lastly I would like to thank all the Feetham guys again for a great semester and hope you all have a good holiday and don’t work too hard. I will see you all next term.

Mother Nature finally turned the temperature down a bit – deliver-ing some very cold days! Please remember that we return for Term 3 in July, and the girls will need to bring warm gear back again.

Inter-House Athletics Carnival was a great way to end Term 2. Even though it was cold, everyone had a blast while competing to the best of their abilities. It’s great to see genuine, friendly rivalry, and comradery between our Sports Houses!

The Touch season ended with a fantastic finals play-off. We’d like to congratulate Summah Beale, who got “Best & Fairest” for the season. Gabes Black played a cliff-hanger that went to a ‘drop-off’ which lasted 20 minutes, with Summah scoring the winning try.

Summah Beale – Player of the Final As well, as huge congratulations to our Gabes 1st team. They had an excellent game that went to a ‘drop-off’, as well, and it ended with Kacey Musk scoring the win-ning try. Congratulations girls!

We’d also like to congratulate April Dixon. April won the “Northern Beef Producers Expo” Junior Judg-ing Competition (here in Charters Towers), before attending the Winton Show with our School Cat-tle Club. April received the “Winton Young Judges Encourage-ment” award for her efforts. She brought home two impressive tro-phies and prize money - which she has already invested wisely… “In a new (UHF) two-way for muster-ing”. Well done April, we’re all very proud of you!

April Dixon – Year 9

Our ‘Pursuit for Positive Change’ challenge has again been a great success. Reminding us all to be kind and respectful, as well as pro-moting tidiness in the dorm. Han-nah Jenkins (Year 7) won the first of two major prize draws and the second was won by Tayla Mittel-stadt (Year 12). Congratulations girls! I hope everyone has a well-deserved holiday, and I’ll see you all again in term three. Until then, take care.

Week eleven, we have made it. It’s been a long and eventful term and now that exams are over we can let the games begin. Namely our Secondary School Inter-House Ath-letics! GO BECKET. This set of holidays we have visti-ors in all our dorms for the boys confraturnity rugby league carnival so all the children have been asked to take everything home. I think they all got a bit of a shock at how much they actually have in their bays. A mid year clean and declut-ter is well worth the effort. Tahlia, Erin, Lacey, Erin, Hannah, Olivia

I hope everyone enjoys being home for a well deserved break and I look forward to seeing you all back, well rested and ready to start term three.

Chad Dormitory Yvonne Schaefer Senior Resident Our Last Weekend The last weekend has seen a bit of down time and a chance to head to the Burdekin for some relaxa-tion. It was a lovely afternoon and everyone had a great time. Thanks to Rhett and Jo Butler of Ramsay Dorm for inviting everyone out to their little piece of paradise.

Club Touch Our touch teams either made the Semi-finals or the Finals of their respective divisions. Gabes Black made up of Caitlyn Elliott, Zoe Godfrey, Georgia Eastaughffe, Lor-na Kepper, Briarley Fitchett, So-phie Keough, and Rachel Hall from Chad Dorm made their finals very exciting by winning their final in a drop-off on Friday night. They were down to 3 players before Summah Beale scored a try and won the game. Dianne Fulford, Casey Campbell and Vivienne El-liott have all done their team proud in the 1st Touch team by winning their final as well. Well done girls! Our Term in Review We have had some great achieve-ments this term as a house. Here are a few of the photos of the term that were snapped out and about.
