In a little over five weeks the School will be admitting a further 127 young men as members of the Toowoomba Grammar School Old Boys’ Association. These 127 young men are our current Year 12 students and the group represents a relatively smaller cohort than is customary due to it representing the ‘Prep half-year cohort’. This smaller group arose due to a decision by the State Government in 2007 to replace pre-school with the Prep year as the first year of schooling in Queensland. The Government also made it a requirement that a child must turn five by 30 June in the year that they enrolled at school. To give effect to this change, the first intake of students was only over a six-month period, being those students born between 1 January 2002 and 30 June 2002. This smaller group of Year 12s at Toowoomba Grammar School this year (and indeed in all Queensland secondary schools this year) is illustrated by the fact that our Year 12 cohort next year will be approximately 175 students.

Every year I encourage the Year 12 students to spend time absorbing as many memories of their school-days as they can prior to the conclusion of their secondary school years. The young men have already experienced the pleasure of representing their School for the last time in the Term One, Two and Three sporting program. The only GPS sporting commitment in Term Four is Track and Field Athletics; this more limited sporting involvement is due to the relatively shorter term and the importance of spending more time on revision and preparing for academic assessment.

For some Year 12 young men they come to the realisation that their schooling days will be over shortly and some begin to regret that they did not make fuller use of all opportunities in their younger years at the School. I take this opportunity to remind all boys in the younger years, Prep – Year 11, that one of the incredible strengths of this School is the vast array of co-curricular activities available to them, not only in sport but in the performing arts, cadets, community service, debating and public speaking, the outdoors and more.

Uniform ShopI often remind the TGS boys that it is a wonderful thing to be part of an institution which is so rich in history, with a strong moral fabric and one which is widely recognised for its achievement and national standing. In a recent Senior School Assembly I invited a member of the teaching staff, Mr Ray Morgan CSM, to talk to the boys about the history of the Australian flag. After such a thoughtful presentation by Mr Morgan, I reminded the boys that their School had been operating for over one-quarter of a century before the Australian flag was flown, before the federation of our nation, before the advent of the motor vehicle etc. There is something significant in being part of a school which is loved by so many people, both nationally and now internationally. I recall a year or so ago we had a TGS sporting team travel interstate. The boys were wearing their blazers neatly on the plane and, whilst they were seated before take-off, a member of the general public walked by the boys and said only three words as a means of recognition and respect. The three words spoken were “Fidelis in Omnibus” (the words of the School’s motto) and by saying this and with a smile the gentleman quietly acknowledged that he was proudly one of them.

On the evening of Friday, 13 September my wife and I met with twelve TGS Old Boys who now work and reside in Sydney. The venue was the Royal Automobile Club of Australia in Macquarie Street and the function was a TGS Old Boys’ Reunion. Here we had Old Boys join together in fellowship, with a further nine Old Boys placing their apologies due to prior commitments or ill-health. Two of the Old Boys present had been recognised by Australia with The Order of Australia award, recognised as people whose actions have enriched Australian society through outstanding achievement and service. Those Old Boys who attended now work in a range of industries including finance, aviation, technology, media, consulting and other professional fields. Each Old

Boy spoke of his years at the School, representing every decade from the 1950’s to the present. Invariably the Old Boys spoke of the positive values inculcated in them through their years at the School, including the value of a strong work ethic. It was extremely rewarding for me to hear from such successful men (professionally and personally) who demonstrated the value of humility and also the value of gratitude. They thanked their parents and grandparents for the opportunity they were given to attend Toowoomba Grammar School and they recalled with fondness a number of their teachers who went out of their way to assist them in their education.

Uniform ShopRelevant to TGS Old Boys, in mid-September I received a visit from Andrew Park, the School’s Senior Prefect in 2013. Andrew has spent the last five years in Cairns undertaking a Bachelor of Dental Surgery at James Cook University. Upon graduation Andrew transferred back to Toowoomba where he is now practising. In my conversation with Andrew, he said that the longer he has been out of the School the stronger the gratitude he feels for things he learnt at TGS. He said that these include humility, work ethic, the role modelling of various teachers, Old Boys and the culture of the School. Andrew recalls the School with great fondness.

On another matter, next month you will see the position of Headmaster of Toowoomba Grammar School being advertised with a commencement date of 1 January 2021. As you know (and as the boys celebrate!!) next

year will be my final year as Headmaster of the School as I will retire in December 2020 following eighteen years as Headmaster of TGS. There have only been fifteen Headmasters in the entire history of the School spanning 144 years. The decision to retire at the end of 2020 and not earlier is because I am enthusiastic to lead TGS in this year to provide some measure of stability for the School given the major changes that are occurring with the introduction of the new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) and the new methods of student assessment incorporating an element of external examination. With so much change for both the boys and the teaching staff, it seems desirable to not add further stress with a new Headmaster commencing his or her tenure with us in such a turbulent year. A Sydney-based consulting firm, Odgers Berndtson, has been engaged by the Board of Trustees of Toowoomba Grammar School to conduct the search for the new Headmaster. Jane Harlen, a Partner in the firm and who specialises in education by heading the Odgers Berndtson Schools Practice in Australia, has been selected as the key consultant in undertaking the role of assisting the Board of Trustees with the search for my successor. She has considerable experience leading international searches for senior appointments including at CEO, Executive Director, Independent School Principal and University Deputy Vice-Chancellor level.

Mrs Harlen has now visited Toowoomba Grammar School on two occasions. The first visit was to make a presentation to the Board of Trustees regarding Odgers Berndtson and her role in executive selection. The second visit took place on Thursday 10 and Friday 11 October to meet numerous stakeholders with an interest in the selection of my successor. This involved interviewing all Trustees and all members of the School Executive focussing on what would be the most desirable characteristics of preferred applicants – educational qualifications, any

corporate experience, career progression in educational institutions, reputation in education through such work as authorship and leading educational bodies, any specialisations in areas such as boys’ education, student wellbeing, teaching and learning, digital technologies, sporting credentials, cultural involvement and so on. Mrs Harlen also spent time meeting with several representatives of the School’s Parents and Friends (P&F) Association and members of the Management Committee of the Toowoomba Grammar School Old Boys’ Association. She also enjoyed meeting with several Year 12 students including the Senior Prefect, Senior Dayboy Prefect and Senior Boarder Prefect.

Toowoomba Grammar School has a national reputation for the quality of the all-round education offered to our boys. Over recent years this reputation has extended to international interest given the School’s membership of the International Boys’ Schools’ Coalition; our numerous student cultural, language and sporting international tours; various

student exchanges; transnational teaching sessions with schools in India, and more. Certainly there will be considerable interest in the position of Headmaster of Toowoomba Grammar School.

During the time I spent with Mrs Harlen during both of her visits to the School, she expressed her most favourable impression of our boys and staff. She commented on the beauty of the School campus and the quality infrastructure and resource base which she likened to some of the best independent schools in Sydney and Melbourne. The all-round commitment to excellence in academic and vocational learning and our emphasis on a quality all-round education not only in the classroom but in the extensive co-curricular program also had appeal.

Whilst the initial recruitment advertising will occur before the end of this year, the actual short-listed interviews will be conducted in the new year and it is anticipated that a final appointment will be announced before the end of Term Two next year. The whole process is a lengthy one and the appointment of a new Headmaster represents an exciting period of change for the School. Mrs Harlen is extremely keen to assist the School’s Board of Trustees in this most important process. I will remain as an interested, impartial observer.

I conclude by encouraging all students of Toowoomba Grammar School to pause for a while, reflect on what is truly important in terms of the benefit of a wonderful education, make carefully considered decisions (rather than acting with impulsivity), think more of the wellbeing of others, show gratitude, demonstrate honesty and integrity, and immerse themselves in all that TGS can offer.

With best wishes,Yours sincerely,

Peter B. HauserHeadmaster

From the Deputy HeadmasterTerm 4 has commenced particularly well with a sense of eagerness and commitment clearly evident from the boys. Whilst being the shortest term of the school year, it is always a hectic period as there are many activities, events and functions to be held prior to breaking for the Christmas holiday. At the first assembly of the term, I urged the boys to continue to set their standards high and maintain their momentum until the end of the year. For the Senior boys, they have an even shorter term prior to their graduation. The next two months will be an exciting time for our Year 12s with many opportunities before they leave to celebrate their contribution to the School. The positive manner in which our Seniors have led the School this year has been most pleasing and I look forward to them finishing their school careers well.

Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday CampOver the first weekend of the September holidays the School hosted its thirteenth Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp. Over three days of perfect weather, the 37 guests were exceptionally well cared for by their Year 11 companions from Toowoomba Grammar School, The Glennie School and Fairholme College as they involved themselves in a wide variety of fun activities. This year, 48 Year 11 TGS boys volunteered and experienced this opportunity. At each of the Camps in which I have been involved, I find myself inspired by the young men and women who, in many ways, step well outside of their comfort zone to assist with the camp and provide care for a child with a disability. The Camps are an exceptional personal development activity and as each of the companions testified at the end of the three days was a most worthwhile experience for them.

Sony Camp is a very meaningful experience to those involved. Personally, I gain a great deal of energy from the sheer enthusiasm and commitment demonstrated by the young men and women caring for our guests. For these companions, it is a time of significant learning and personal growth as they place themselves in an unfamiliar and challenging environment; for our guests and their families, Sony Camp offers a fun few days as well as much-needed respite.

Ronan Austin was a Year 11 companion and spoke to the boys on assembly about his experience. He shared with the boys the following: “We left the Camp with a new perspective on ‘ability’ and what it means to care for someone, 24/7, who cannot necessarily care for themselves and consequently a new appreciation and admiration for parents who care for these children all year. It is these takeaways that motivate me to get involved next year as a Year 12 helper and which encourage me to urge all of you to consider participating in Sony Camp. It is an experience that, and I say this with no exaggeration, will leave you with life-long memories and change you as a TGS man.”

This year, we had a number of volunteer staff and contributors who made for a very successful Sony Camp. To our staff and volunteer nurses, a special thank you. Hearing about the special event Sony Camp is, we had several businesses that offered to contribute and we would like to acknowledge their support:

• Darling Downs Entertainment for the disco equipment• Homestyle Bakery, Norco, Jensens, Provincial and Angliss for their food

supplies and donations.

Term 4 EventsWe are looking ahead to some great school events this term: TiGAA Showcase, GPS Track and Field Championships, House Singing, Take Note Concert, Cadet March Out Parade, our Speech Day and Prize Giving Ceremony and the significant events that celebrate our Year 12s concluding their schooling and time at TGS. It is a time for hard work, mateship and celebration of the collective endeavours of 2019. Needless to say, Term 4 is a short term and the boys need to be focussed immediately. We are all looking forward to a successful finish to the school year.

Uniform Shop From the Head of Senior SchoolThere has been significant media coverage recently around the harms of vaping and e-cigarettes and a number of health bodies have released statements. Through the Personal Development and Health and Physical Education programs at Toowoomba Grammar School, we do educate the boys on the dangers of using e-cigarettes and vaping. I recommend that parents access the following articles:

ABC - I’m Horrified by the Damage Vaping Does

CNET – A Timeline of Recent Juul and Vaping Health Controversies

CDC – E-Cigarettes and Severe Lung Disease

Exchange StudentsWe have welcomed to Toowoomba Grammar School Chirag Rathi and Shivansh Bansal from the Scindia School in India for Term 4. The boys are staying in Groom Boarding House. It would be great if there were willing parents in our community who may be able to take the boys out on leave occasionally throughout the term. If you are interested in doing so, please contact Mr Daniel MacDonald ([email protected]).

Each year we host a number of Exchange Students from schools around the world. Typically, we ask that students hosted here wear their school uniform from home. However, recent feedback from the students indicates a preference to wear the TGS uniform. If you do have any used uniforms that you would be willing to donate for this purpose then please let me know.

Term 3 Reports – Work EthicHousemasters and Senior Staff look closely at the reports each term and I was very pleased to see a number of boys responding to advice on improving their work ethic in class. Boys are rated by teachers as having a Work Ethic of Very Good (4), Good (3), Satisfactory (2) or Needs Improvement (1). When numerically averaging scores for Work Ethic, boys can achieve a maximum score of 4. We were thrilled to see the number of boys receiving Pro Summa Diligentia Awards with a perfect grade point average (GPA) of 4 and I am pleased with the overall average in the Senior School.

• Friday, 16 November – Year 12 Formal, Rumours International Convention Centre, 7:00pm.

2020 House Swimming CarnivalDue to the change in the structure of the school year with the new QCE, the decision has been made that each year we will run the House Swimming Championships during Term 4. The points for the Championships will count towards the Headmaster’s Shield results for the following year. This year, and in future years, the Year 12s will be sitting their final examinations and will not be required to attend the House Swimming Championships. In doing this, we will no longer have to split our carnival over two venues.

GPS Track and Field ChampionshipsFor many, the GPS Track and Field Championships are the highlight of the GPS Sport calendar. This year the championships will be held on Saturday, 2 November. The boys look forward to supporting and competing at this great event. For the GPS Track and Field Championships, all Year 10 boys are expected to attend as spectators. Additionally, any boy from other year levels is welcome to attend. Boys from Years 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 are required to sign up at the Sport and Activities Office should they wish to attend. Dress is Blazer for spectators. I would like to wish the athletes all the very best in their final preparations.

End-of-Term LeaveI appreciate the consideration shown by parents at the end of last term to avoid early leave requests. Boys in Years 7-11 will still have assessment items due in the final week of Term 4, so please avoid early holiday leave. The House Touch Football competition will be contested on the afternoons of Wednesday and Thursday in the final week. The final lessons are very important for boys to receive results and feedback from their latest assessment and consider their student profile for each subject. School finishes for the year at 3:10pm, Thursday, 28 November and boys should be in attendance until this time.

Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday CampThe annual Sony Camp was held on the first weekend of the September holidays where 74 Year 11 students from Toowoomba Grammar School, The Glennie School and Fairholme College took on the responsibility of looking after a child with a disability. The camp’s great success this year is largely attributed to the work of 17 volunteer Year 12 students who organised and conducted most of the activities during the Camp. I am very grateful to the Year 12 boys and girls who gave up their holiday time to volunteer their assistance and make the Sony Camp such a success

From the Head of Junior SchoolDear Parents

Head of Junior School

The positive mood throughout the Junior School was quite palpable during the first week of term. I made the comment to several people during the week that this is one of the times of the year when you have primary schools at their very best. Staff and students have returned from holidays, the boys enjoy seeing their friends and young children genuinely like being at school. Energy, vigour and enthusiasm need no great promotion as the mood generated by the boys is infectious.

New StudentWe welcomed one new boy to the school this term, Watipaso (Wati) Tembo, who commenced his schooling with us in Year 1. I welcome Wati and his family to the Junior School and wish them a long and happy association with our School.

Public Speaking CompetitionThe Junior School Public Speaking Competition occurs in Term 4 each year. Every boy in the Junior School participates in this competition and is required to prepare and deliver a speech to his class on a specific topic. The aim of this competition is for the boys to work on the real-life skill of speaking in front of an audience. It is also expected that the speeches are very much the boys’ work.

A trophy and book voucher are awarded for first place in each class, a medallion for second and third places along with highly commended certificates. The medallions and certificates will be awarded at an assembly later in the term and the first place trophies are awarded at Speech Day. The boys in Year 6 also compete for the McKee Trophy for Public Speaking, which is a perpetual trophy that is also awarded at Speech Day. I wish the boys all the best for this important academic pursuit.

Swimming Carnival (under 5 to under 8 years)At the end of last term, we held our swimming carnival for the youngest boys at the School. This involved boys from Prep to Year 3 (under 5 to under 8 years). This carnival is held towards the end of third term each year quite deliberately. All boys from Prep to Year 3 have a swimming lesson each week of the year as part of their Toowoomba Grammar School experience. Having the swimming carnival later in the year ensures all our Prep students have had three terms of swimming lessons prior to the carnival occurring. These boys are then much better placed to enjoy their first swimming carnival and for some, they have already progressed to the 25-metre pool and can swim competitively. It was pleasing to see so many parents in attendance supporting the boys. Congratulations to Stephens House for winning the carnival and to Groom House for earning the House Spirit Trophy.

Enrolments At this point in time we have some year levels that are at capacity for 2020 and others that are close. If you have a younger son you wish to enrol in 2020 or 2021, I encourage you to contact the School promptly. The same applies should you have friends or relatives seeking to do the same.

ConclusionI wish our staff and students all the best for a successful and rewarding final term of the school year.

From the Director of Studies

Director of Studies

Year 12 students are in the final race to the end of their Senior studies and I use the word “race” deliberately. Before they know it, their exams will be upon them and they will be sitting their last maths exam, for some, ever. It is essential that the boys realise that the race is not over until that final calculation or full stop. If they become complacent during their final few weeks, they may find other boys overtake them. While their results overall may not change, an OP result is based on position in the cohort so they may find complacency could cost them in the OP stakes.

Year 8 and 10 students have completed their subject selections and we are in the process of creating a timetable for 2020. Some students are now asking that we change their selections but as the timetable is well progressed, the full suite of subjects may no longer be available.

Students in Year 10 should be especially mindful as they progress through their final term of studies. All Year 10 subjects are working with Year 11 in mind and the boys are likely to find that the academic rigour has increased as we prepare the boys for Senior Studies. If your son finds that a subject is getting too difficult or his results are not reflecting his efforts, then perhaps it would be worthwhile considering whether he has selected the most appropriate subject for Year 11. The various Heads of Department will identify any student who they have concerns about in terms of their subject selection and will ensure that his teacher speaks with him about his choice. It is not too late to change, and we would rather he was studying the most appropriate subject from the start of Year 11.

Dr George Fielding AwardsThe George Fielding Award is given in recognition of the significant and consistent approach students have taken with their studies. Given to Year 12 students in their final semester of School, this award recognises those boys whose work ethic has been consistently very good during

their time in the Senior School. For our current Year 12 boys who started their senior schooling in Year 7, to receive an award they must have received a Diligence award a minimum of nine times out of 12. This year, twenty-four Year 12 boys (below) have received the George Fielding award. This significant achievement reflects the high value we place on work ethic. It is an award that is achievable by every student, as it is not based on results but by application.

Of particular note, nine students received a Diligence award every semester of their time in the Senior School. This means that on every Term 1 and 3 report for every subject for six years, their teachers reported their work ethic as very good with no more than one Good. This is a significant achievement and one for which they should be particularly congratulated.

From the Director of Sport & ActivitiesWelcome back to the TGS community for the concluding term of Sport and Activities. As we take a breath from the hectic pace of Term Three, we look forward to the challenges that Term Four brings with it across the wide range of pursuits in which our students will be involved.

The honing of conditioning and technique on the athletic field to the strengthening of mateship amongst athletes in the warm ups and cool downs of the tartan track, Term Four sees the culmination of months of preparation and training for our athletes as they embark on their mission to seek higher levels of athletic achievement. We look forward to seeing their efforts play out at the GPS Track and Field Championship in early November and I implore the wider TGS community to get behind our athletes and support them at what is a spectacular event on the GPS calendar.

From the track to the cricket field and volleyball court, Term Four also sees the steady acceleration of our preseason development programs in preparation for their seasons in early 2020. Alongside this, we have a number of teams seeking success in the Australian Schools Volleyball Cup to be held at the Gold Coast toward the end of the year and we look forward to those players pushing themselves both mentally and physically in the highest standard of volleyball competition in the nation.

TGS has also played host to the local Bush Bash Cricket competition with a number of our 1st XI players involved as well as a smattering of staff in what was a very well received round of fixtures hosted by Toowoomba Grammar School in Week 1. This competition provides a degree of community outreach and partnerships that extend well beyond the sphere of cricket and I know that our sportsmen will continue to be fine ambassadors for the School in such pursuits. I extend my thanks to the staff involved in these programs and initiatives and in particular Director of Volleyball, Mr Eric Smith and Director of Cricket, Mr Ben Schuhmacher for their leadership and passion that underpin their respective programs.

We will also see the commencement of our 2020 House Swimming Championship in Term Four due to the nature that external examinations will have in 2020. This change in our inter-House carnival schedule will mean we will enjoy a second swimming event in early November with the students swimming in their 2020 age groups. This event will also mark the first House Carnival event for the official 2020 Headmaster’s Shield and will remain in Term Four for the foreseeable future. I would encourage the TGS community to support our students as they test themselves against their peers in the quest for success for their respective Houses.

I wish all the best for our students as they head into the final term and in particular those Performing Arts students as we look forward to sharing in their 2019 thespian journey with the illustrative TiGAA Showcase in early November. Can I please encourage all students to continue to strive for excellence in all that they do and to always put their best foot forward when representing Toowoomba Grammar School.

From the Director of Boarding

This term started with a very enjoyable Boarder Parents’ Appreciation Function on the day that the boarders returned to school. This night is always an enjoyable occasion and serves as a great way to bring boarding families together with day families who have supported boarding students during their time at the School. Many thanks to the Boarder Parents’ Support Group for organising this occasion and to the P&F for funding it. It was great to catch up with many of you on the night in what was a relaxed and happy atmosphere. Special thanks to the Year 11 boarders who assisted by serving food at this function – Jim Gillan, Mitchell Dight, Oscar Cass, Tim Johnston and Hunter Austin.

Our Year 12 boarders have only a few weeks left before they move out of our Boarding Houses and onto the next phase of their lives. Many have spent five or six years living with their boarding mates and have built life-long friendships as a result of sharing this time together. The School has a number of special events this term to mark the graduation of the Seniors. These young men will be missed in the future and they have provided direction and leadership for the years to come.

This term we have planned four Friday night barbeques for the boarders and we also have four lunch barbeques being held on alternate Fridays. These are always great, with many of the boarding staff bringing their own families along which adds to a nice community feel at these occasions. The boys sit around on the grass near the Pavilion with mates and large games of touch football happen, particularly with the late afternoon barbeques. The first of these barbeques was held on 11 October and we all look forward to the remaining barbeques this term.

One of the challenges of Term 4 each year in boarding is that many boys are not playing sport on Saturdays and they can become bored easily. Track and Field is the only option in the GPS competition and a relatively small number are involved in this. To keep the boys busy a full program of recreational activities has been planned and I hope all parents received my email recently with a copy of this program. Boarders are also encouraged to participate in other non-TGS sport (eg: club cricket, touch football), but leave arrangements will need to be made before boys can participate. We also have a new initiative in place where a personal trainer has been engaged to run an outdoor fitness session for the boarders every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon this term. The boarding staff will be prompting boys to take advantage of the many recreational activities on offer, but it would be great if parents could assist in this regard.

Considerable effort has gone into refining and improving the Dining Hall Menu this year. Our Executive Chef, Mr Bailey and his staff have made a number of changes through the year which have been received positively by the boarders. This term sees a number of new options on the menu, mostly based on the feedback from our Boarding Food Committee. Our thanks go to Mr Bailey and his staff for their ongoing effort to provide great food for the boarders.

With the year rapidly drawing to an end, I trust that you are happy with the way your son is progressing. Please make contact with your son’s Housemaster, or me directly, if we can assist in any way.

From the Director of PerformanceIndividual students continue to shine in community artistic events.

Last term, Lachlan Schultz performed on the Empire Theatre stage in the Toowoomba Choral Society’s acclaimed production of My Fair Lady.

Lachlan was joined by Angus Mohr at the Queensland Conservatorium’s Australian Honours Ensemble Program in Brisbane during the school holidays. Angus and Lachlan were two of only 125 students selected for this prestigious program.

Julian Lachmund successfully auditioned to perform with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in the Sounds from the Deep Concert at the Empire Theatre on Saturday, 28 September. Julian is about to sit for his A.Mus.A exam on Violin, and we wish him the very best in his final preparations for this exam.

Uniform ShopHow do you test the swimming capability of 50 Army Cadets in one afternoon? Take them to the Aquatic Centre and throw them in fully clothed of course! The TGS Cadet Unit participated in a Swim Test on Friday, 13 September 2019 to test their swimming and treading water ability before Ex Beersheba. The cadets were required to swim 50m in full uniform, minus boots, and tread water for three minutes to successfully pass the Swim Test. Our thanks go to Trinity Freer and the Aquatic Centre Staff for allowing us access and remaining to help us supervise the Cadets whilst in the pool.

On the morning of 21 September 2019, 30 eager and energetic Army Cadets climbed onto buses set to challenge themselves with a week of adventure, teamwork and friendship. The Annual Field Exercise held at Greenbank Military Training Area is an activity-based program delivered by the South Queensland Brigade to develop the skills of the cadets. After arriving at the Training Base the cadets were separated into their tiers, with Tier 1 (first-years) gaining experience of what life is like for a “real soldier”, and Tier 2 (second and above years) focusing on specific electives such as First Aid, Survival or Robotics. I was lucky enough to spend the week with Bravo Company on Tier 1, where we experienced RATEL in the field, Weapons Simulation Shoot, Night Vision Training and the Army Obstacle Course. Loads of fun was had by all involved. The Cadets from Toowoomba Grammar School were exceptionally well-behaved and I was so proud of their achievements.

The Annual March Out Parade is our focus for the rest of October. The Parade will be held on Thursday 31 October 2019 on Old Boys’ Memorial Oval beginning at 9:00am. We welcome all parents and friends to attend.

From Ben Peacock, Year 11:

After winning the Australian Army Cadets’ Team Challenge in early July, the South Queensland Team won the opportunity to travel to New Zealand to compete. On 30 September the team of 10 flew into Auckland. During the first three days we had the opportunity to do some sightseeing. We then headed down south to Royal New Zealand Air Force Base Ohakea to commence competition against 11 New Zealand teams. During the three days of competition the teams completed many stands such as drill, navigation, fitness tests, weapon handling, live firing range and an observation lane. After the completion of the competition, we had the privilege to visit the Turangawaewae, where we experienced the Maori culture. The South Queensland team won the competition which is the first time an Australian team has achieved this. I would like to thank the Australian Army Cadets for this opportunity.

Queensland Mental Health Week & National Nutrition Week

Once again we returned from school holidays straight into Queensland Mental Health Week and National Nutrition Week 2019. As in 2018, we again decided to mark both occasions with our own Health and Wellbeing Week 2019. Research continues to highlight the connection between our diet and mental health, both positive and negative. Those whose diet is poor are at greater risk of depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns, whilst those who eat a varied and rounded diet tend to have more energy, sleep better, experience improved concentration and generally keep a healthier headspace.

This year, Queensland Mental Health Week theme was Take time — for mental health, with National Nutrition Week encouraging us to try for five serves of vegetables each day by embracing our food ‘waste’. Together with the Co-ordinator of Pastoral Care, the Health and Physical Education Department, the Drama Department and our Health Centre, students and staff were invited to take part in a number of physical and mental health based activities.

The activities offered aimed specifically to promote positive wellbeing across the physical and mental health domains. Once again, we were privileged to have a number of external organisations attend the School

to provide activities and displays about mental health and wellbeing, sexual health and physical health. I thank those organisations who took the time out of their day to attend our School and meet with students and staff. Exposure to external organisations and supports assists in increasing knowledge, reducing stigma around wellbeing concerns and promotes help seeking behaviours.

Headspace representatives talk to students about mental health

When we have opportunities to shine a light on these important topics, we often find that self-reflection transpires fairly organically. It is during these times of reflection that I am reminded of how fortunate I am in the work that I do here at TGS. My role allows me to meet with and support students at times when they are struggling and often their most vulnerable.

In 2018 we were able to invite one such person, a TGS Old Boy, back to speak about his journey with mental health in the lead up to our Health and Wellbeing Week. This year we invited current student, Kodi Bailey, to share his lived experience of mental health concerns with his peers. Kodi addressed the senior school during the Headmaster’s assembly in week 1.

During his speech, Kodi spoke with courage about his own experience with mental health concerns, in addition to his journey of losing a friend to suicide in 2016. As you can imagine, speaking to an audience of your teachers and peers is daunting at the best of times, let alone speaking about such a personal and emotive topic. Despite this challenge, Kodi spoke with strength and hope, proudly sharing his friend’s message to “think first. speak up” and “reach out” in times of need. I thank Kodi for his courage and commitment to promoting help seeking behaviour and working to destigmatise mental health concerns.

I would like to personally extend my appreciation to those staff and students involved in making the events of our Health and Wellbeing Week 2019 such a big success. Specifically, I would like to thank Ms Suzanne Connelly (Pastoral Care Co-ordinator) for her extensive efforts in planning and coordinating the week. It would not have happened without her.

Hello Boarder Parents, Welcome back to the beginning of Term 4 – the light at the end of the tunnel for some and the final chapter for others. I wish the boys well for this hectic term and encourage them to focus and make the best of this last term, which will go very quickly, particularly for the Year 12’s.

Our sincere thanks to the Health Centre Staff who had an extremely busy time in Term 3. Their expertise and care of our boys are warmly appreciated. We hope that this term runs smoothly.

It was great to see many of you at the Boarder Parents’ Appreciation Function. It was a lovely evening and a great opportunity to express our thanks to parents of day students as well as members of staff who offer our sons such wonderful support in a variety of ways.

Thank you to those parents who were able to join us at our last meeting.

This was our AGM as well and I was lucky enough to be able to continue in my role of President of this wonderful Supporters’ Group. I would like to thank the Secretary and Boarder House Reps for their wonderful support and teamwork throughout 2019 and wish the new position holders for 2020 all the best. The contact details for the BPSG in 2020 will be available on the Parent Portal in January. I am available at any time for Boarder Parents so please feel free to pass on my number 0438 489 170 to any new parents who may have questions.

I am pleased to announce the new BPSG positions for 2020 as follows:

President: Kym WrightSecretary: Megan OfficerGroom House Rep: Ruth JohnstonStephens House Rep: Megan OfficerMackintosh House Rep: Wendy WocknerTaylor House Rep: Susan StathamBoyce House Rep: Heidi BeetonCorfe House Rep: Sarah McInnerney

There is a large buildup of unnamed clothing in the boarding houses – could parents please remind boys to check for missing items.

Fitted Sheets – boys are able to bring a named fitted sheet to go on their mattress if they wish and it will be washed with the normal weekly sheet wash and returned later that day. This should help with bed making.

If you have any queries or suggestions in regards to boarding please don’t hesitate to contact me at any time via phone 0438 489 170 or email [email protected]
