It is pleasing to note that the postponed National Schools Knockout Competition, which eventually took place onThursday night, saw marvellous performances from all our five teams producing a number of season personalbests, which included three School records – Sebastien Moir (11Hi) in the 16 years 100m and 200m event, andBertie Swann (11Ar) in the 16years 100m hurdles. Our seniors were Silver medallists. Our No. 1 IntermediateTeam were Gold medallists, our No. 2 Intermediate Team were placed fourth, our No. 1 Junior Team were goldmedallists and our No. 2 junior team were placed fourth as well. With these results we have confirmation thatthree of our teams have so far qualified for the National Schools Knockout Final which will be held in Canberra inDecember and there is still a chance that two more teams may also qualify – congratulations to the boys andcoaches. What a fine pre-CAS Championship performance - well done to our athletes, coaches and supportingstaff.

From the Deputy Head MasterThe Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (the national data collection) is anannual collection that counts the number of school students with disability and the level of reasonableeducational adjustment they are provided with.

The aim of the national data collection is to collect quality information about school students with disability inAustralia. This information will help teachers, principals, education authorities and families to better supportstudents with disability to take part in school on the same basis as students without disability. The national datacollection is an opportunity for schools to review their learning and support systems and processes to continuallyimprove education outcomes for their students with disability.

All education ministers agreed to full implementation of the national data collection from 2015. This means thatall schools must now collect and submit information annually on the number of students with disability in theircare and the level of adjustment provided to them.

Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all students and their families is essential. Personal details such asstudent names or other identifying information will not be provided to local or federal education authorities.

Parents can read more about this process at NCCD 2016 information for parents

FROM THE ARTHUR HOLT LIBRARYQuick Reads! In the past few weeks, we’ve hosted the Middle School English classes for some wide readinglessons. We’ve tried to be somewhat different in our delivery. Students have found our Lounge Area arranged alittle like a café – clusters of chairs set around small round tables. The difference is instead of cups of coffee onthe tables, there are piles of books. Each pile contains a broad mix of genres and styles including magazines, biographies and graphic fiction. A countdown timer is set for five rounds of 5 minutes, with students changingbooks each time. They are encouraged to go beyond appearances and not pay too much attention to the coverand the blurb. Instead they spend some time getting to know each book by reading as much as they can in theallotted time frame. Starting from the first page and simply reading allows the author’s “hook” to do its job, andhopefully encourages enough curiosity about what happens next that the book is then borrowed. Our aim is toget as many students borrowing as possible, and to encourage reading “outside comfort zones”. We’ve reallyenjoyed these lessons, helping each student find a book that is right for them. It brings to mind the wonderfulquote attributed to J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series:

“If you don’t like to read, you haven’t found the right book.”

ACADEMIC

ACADEMIC FOCUS | HISTORY DEPARTMENTHistory classes at Trinity have now completed another year of vital academicdevelopment amidst the study of a range of topics, issues, events and societies thatfoster the understanding of our current world.

As our HSC and IB students endeavour to collect their thoughts and essay plans in the coming weeks after someextensive revision, the History Staff are busily completing the marking of some 650 Research Assessmentssubmitted by Year 8-10 students. These Assessments enable young scholars to display their research andanalytical skills ; we never cease to be amazed at their magnificent efforts.

The Year 10 History Research Assessments provide an opportunity for students to explore, if they wish, anaspect of their family history, and correlate their exercise in oral history research to important developments inthe twentieth century. An interview is conducted, transcribed, and allied to a concise assessment of the relevanthistorical context. The student judged to have submitted the finest assignment ( always a difficult task ) ispresented with the Reg Marsh History Award on Speech Day.

As ever, we have in 2016 received some superlative responses which highlight the culturally and politicallydiverse heritages of the Trinity community. It promotes reflection upon the providence and sovereignty of God inthe grand movements of history as He has brought people together here in Australia, and provided children fromsuch diverse backgrounds with the same opportunities through a shared Christian education.

Highlights have been:

Marcus Mircevki’s (10St) interview with his grandfather Paul Stephen about his childhood in Macedonia in the1930s, and wartime experience in the 1940s before arrival in Sydney in 1947.

Richard Lew’s (10Du) interview with his mother about her experience of the Chinese Cultural Revolution.

Zachary Harrison’s (10Hi) interview with his grandfather about his experience of WWII on Thursday Island.

Saachin Simpson’s (10WH) interview with his grandfather Avtar Sachdev about his personal experience of theIndian Partition in the 1930s and 1940s.

Jonathan Zheng’s (10WH) interview with the only surviving sibling of a Tamworth soldier who died in theVietnam War.

Ned Hatton-Ward’s (10Sc) interview about his father’s role in the Bosnian War of the 1990s.

Alexander Ciarroni’s (10WJ) interview with his grandfather Harry Nicolaou about life in Cyprus in the 1950sand the immigrant experience in Sydney in the 1960s.

Koray Cankurt’s (10WH) research into the origins of the modern nation of Turkey created by Mustafa KemalAtaturk, and ‘the country where my parents and grandparents come from…’.

All Year 10 students also deliver a 2-3 minute Oral Reflection upon the historical methodologies they employedin their research, and this past month I have witnessed some most poignant reflections. With permission I quotepart of Alexander Kolesnikoff’s (10 Ho ) exemplary speech:

I chose to investigate my family’s history, to understand the processes that were involved in my family’smigration from Imperial Russia to Harbin, which is located in Northern China, and then to Australia in the late1950s and early 1960s. I conducted research, investigating background information relating to the foundation ofHarbin and the lifestyle that many people experienced, as well the impact the Soviet and Chinese communistshad on Harbin. From my preliminary findings, I developed questions based on life in Harbin and migration toAustralia as well the lifestyle that was established once in Australia, which I asked my grandfather. After the hourand a half interview, I transcribed it into my written assignment, which I then used to guide me through writingthe biography. For the aforementioned reasons, the structuring of the biography was a challenge, as was thecompletion of the overall task. Other sources provided me with a wide variety of views about both the impact ofthe Communism on Harbin and its Russian population and the Russian immigrants’ effect on multiculturalismwithin Australia. Although this task was rather time consuming, I have benefitted from broadening my knowledgeof my family’s history and I have found the whole experience fascinating and invaluable. I shall forever treasurethe audio tape of my grandfather’s story and shall keep it as a valuable part of my family’s heritage.

Trinity Swimming Club Wins NSW State Age Point ScoreOn the 26th to 28th August 2016, Trinity Grammar School Swimming Club sent a total of 49 swimmers tocompete at the 2016 NSW State Age Winter Swimming Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park AquaticCentre.

In what can only be described as an amazing display of courage and tenacity, the TGS Swim Team managed toovercome all the other 102 competing clubs to win the NSW State Age point score for the very first time in ourClub’s history. This is no small feat, with many other clubs entering the championships with nearly double thenumber of competitors in comparison to our team.

The meet provided the athletes and coaching staff with a distinct CAS feeling, as it was a close battle betweenTrinity and Knox Pymble over the three day meet. Trinity Grammar School Swimming Club finished the meet infirst position with 2510 points, ahead of their rivals Narrabeen Carlile (2348) and Knox Pymble (2344) finishingsecond and third respectively.

TGS also topped the gold medal count with 21, again ahead of Knox Pymble (18) and Narrabeen Carlile (17). Thiswas truly a victory that could not have occurred without the contribution and involvement of all team members,as every point achieved was vital to our overall result.

Some of our notable performers were Angus McDonald (9Sc) who finished the championships with two goldand two silver medals, Nathan Zhu (11Ke) two gold medals, Andy Lee (7Fo) one gold and one silver medal, and Dominic Lopez (8Ke) one gold medal.

Our boys 15 and under Medley relay team of Angus McDonald (9Sc), Patrick Jiang (10St), Ryan Hansen(9We) and William Raptis (10Ta) also secured a gold medal in a nail-biting finish, winning by the smallest ofmargins of 0.12 seconds.

A special thank you to all of our parents and coaches, who spent over 30 hours at SOPAC supporting ourswimmers throughout the very busy and long weekend.

Snow Sports | NSW Interschool ChampionshipsThe Trinity Snow Sports Team competed in the New South Wales InterschoolChampionships at Thredbo last week in beautiful bluebird conditions. The TrinitySnowboarders had an avalanche effect over the Trinity Skiers while at the SydneyInterschools Championships receiving 6 of the 8 State invitations.

Louis McCrohon (5Hi) competed in two skiing events (Skier Cross and Alpine) and two snowboarding events(Boarder Cross and Snowboard Giant Slalom), which was an incredible feat as this has not been achieved for along time in Trinity Snow Sports history.

Harrison Waters (8We) had his first taste of State Championship competition racing in the Division 3 BoarderCross. He was up against some stiff competition and fared well in the overall standings.

Kristian Dahan (10Hi) was exceptional on the board as he placed 6 th in the Division 2 Boarder Cross andfinished up on the podium in 3rd place for the Division 2 Snowboard Giant Slalom. Kristian also became part ofInterschools’ history as he was one of the first competitors to compete in the new Slopestyle event. Slopestyle isan event where competitors run through a terrain park full of features that include rails, boxes, jibs and kickers. They are judged on style, choice of features and technical ability that is judged by a panel of four Slopestyleexperts. Kristian fared well in the event, but narrowly missed out on a top ten finish. Kristian will be representingthe Trinity Snow Sports Team in mid-August at the Australian Interschools Championships in Perisher.

Dear Editor:

Here are some descriptions of the features the snow boarders have to negotiate:

Kicker is a steep jump ranging from 10- 120ft (our boys only hit kickers that are 10-20ft).

Jibbing is technical riding on non standard surfaces. As a verb: to jib is referring to the action of jumping, sliding, tapping or riding on top of objects other than snow.

Rails are metal rails fixed in to snow that represent a handrail or metal structure. These range with differingheights, thicknesses and can even have a variety of kinks and curves through them.

CO-CURRICULAR

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award CeremonyWatching our former students be presented with their Duke of Edinburgh GoldAward always makes my heart swell with pride. Last Wednesday was no exception;six Trinity students from the class of 2015 were presented with their Gold Award, theprogramme’s highest honour, by His Excellency, David Hurley, Governor of NSW.

As I watched the young men shake hands with the Governor, in the presence of their parents and their peers, itwas hard not to remember them as shy, hesitant 14 year old boys heading off for their first Bronze expedition. Now, just a few years later, they all presented as confident, contented and articulate young men. Whilst manyfactors and people have no doubt shaped them, I am sure that the Duke of Ed. programme played its ownsmall, yet significant part in helping them find their feet. As they socialised on the lawns of Government House, they reminisced about some of the great experiences they endured – some challenging, others uplifting, somehumorous.

If nothing else, the D of E programme encourages our boys and young men to initiate new experiences, to pushbeyond their comfort zones and make the best of their God-given talents; to quote Tennyson: “To strive, to seek,to find, and not to yield”.

If your son would like to join the Duke of Edinburgh programme, please contact me at the School.
