Keeping patient information secure
• Access will be on a ‘need-to-know’ basis according to job role
• State of the art authentication processes are being used
• All registered staff will access systems using a smartcard and PIN
• Patient information will only be shared in the interests of their care
• Audit trail of when, where and by whom patient records were accessed
UK National health IT• England, Scotland, Wales and Northern
Ireland all different
• England – NPfIT in NHS– £6.2 billion over ten years (potentially £20 billion)– Network and PACS (Imaging) successful– The rest is at least two years late– Replace rather than build on– Many lessons for others
• Wales – project just started

UK National health IT
• Scotland– Centralised strategy– No use of global service companies– Focus on clinical added to existing legacy
administration systems– GP systems to be replaced
• Northern Ireland– Limited budgets– Build on rather than replace

Progress with Prorec UK
• English NPfIT seen as ‘the standard’ and so no need for Prorec Centre
• Now with NPfIT being questioned– 25 professors of IT asked for review– Politicians of all parties demanding change– BCS recommending review
• Prorec UK now becoming a reality– Focus on EHR, standards and lessons– Academic, BCS and Industry involvement
