Six months after arriving at Bay Area Hospital, the da Vinci Si Surgical System has won respect from its three human partners. “It’s a fun way to operate, because you’re so completely in control,” says gynecologist Laurie Hamilton, MD, of the surgical robot. Dr. Hamilton is among the ini-tial trio of surgeons to train on the da Vinci Si at Bay Area Hospital. The state-of-the-art device, dubbed “Surgio” by local school children, impressed the doctors and brought immediate benefits to patients. “It was a good move for the hospital, good for the community,” says urologist John Muenchrath, MD, another member of the pioneering trio. General surgeon Steven Tersigni, MD, is the third. The robot’s mechanical arms reach into the patient’s abdomen through tubes called trocars. The human surgeon, watching a magni-fied video image, manipulates min-

iature instruments that mimic the surgeon’s movements. Compared with conventional surgery, patients bleed less, heal more quickly, and have less scarring. Dr. Hamilton observed the da Vinci Si’s benefits the first day she used it. When a patient strolled past her in a hospital corridor, Dr. Hamilton was startled to recognize the woman who had been on her operating table less than two hours earlier. For Dr. Muenchrath the most dramatic change has been in prostate surgery. Prostate patients used to spend two or three nights in the hospital. Now they go home the next day. They experience less postsurgery pain too. “A lot of people go through the procedure, believe it or not, without any nar-cotics,” he says. After watching Dr. Muench-rath at the controls, Dr. Tersigni is a believer. “If I were to have a

prostate done, I wouldn’t do it any other way,” he says. Dr. Muenchrath sees robotic surgery as essential to the future of urology in rural hospitals. Because young urologists now train on ro-bots, he thinks any hospital without one will have trouble replacing retirees. The robot’s most welcome benefit for Dr. Muenchrath is its suturing. “Anything that involves sewing—that’s where the robot really shines,” he says. “That thing actually has more degrees of free-dom than your own wrist.” The robot’s miniature instru-ments can sew precise, watertight seams. That means less blood loss—sometimes less than 100 mil-liliters (not quite half a cup), com-pared with five times as much in a traditional “open” prostatectomy. Dr. Hamilton can go one better, losing only 10 milliliters of blood (less than a tablespoon) in a hyster-

ectomy. But the prize goes to Dr. Tersigni. He recently detached a patient’s gallbladder without spill-ing a drop. The robot’s miniature instruments and high magnification let him maneuver daintily past the tiniest blood vessels. “You can just see the tissue so much better,” Dr. Tersigni says. Dr. Tersigni sees robotic surgery as an opportunity to strengthen his practice. He is the only Southern Oregon surgeon offering “single-site” gallbladder surgery—leaving a barely percep-tible scar, no more than an inch and a half long. He hopes the proce-dure’s cosmetic appeal will attract out-of-town patients. As more surgeons train to use the da Vinci Si, it seems likely to become an operating-room mainstay. Leo Kusuda, MD, and Stephan Groth, MD, are in the midst of training and will join the ranks of qualified surgeons

in March. Still the robot is not right for every surgery. Dr. Ter-signi notes that, once the robot is wheeled into place and “docked” to the patient, the surgeon cannot easily detour to another area of the patient’s chest or abdomen. “That’s why you don’t do everything ro-botically,” he says. “You pick your cases.” Limitations aside, Dr. Hamil-ton foresees a day when surgeons can operate on patients in far-distant hospitals—a huge potential benefit in the developing world. The robot’s manufacturer, Intuitive Surgical, says long-distance sur-gery is theoretically possible, but it is not the company’s current focus. For now the three local pio-neers are delighted with “Surgio.” “It’s been wonderful,” Dr. Hamil-ton says. “It’s just an amazing tool that is really nice to use.”

A new year brings change in leadershipSutter Coast Hospital

The New Year brings a change of physician leadership at Sutter Coast Hospital. Dr. Nikki Schwartz was recently elected by the Medical Staff to serve as Chief of Staff. She is a Board Certified Family Physician and works for Sound Inpatient Physicians as the co-Medical Director of the inpatient hospital medicine group at Sutter Coast Hospital. She has previously served as the hospital’s Chair of Medicine.

“Several years ago, I came here as a medical student on a rural medicine rotation. I hiked Jed Smith Park and caught steelhead on the Chetco and was in awe of the natural beauty of the area. Then I met the people of the community and I was hooked. I knew I’d come back and these were the people I would serve,” shares Schwartz. “My family and I made this community our home officially in 2010. Since then, I’ve spent countless hours within the walls of the hospital caring for acutely ill patients. It’s a privilege to care for someone when they are at their sickest. I’ve come to think of the hospital as my home away from home and the staff as my extended family. It’s more important than ever to work together as we move forward, so we can continue to provide the same full spectrum of care for our community, albeit under a different designation.”

Horn echoes, “I look forward to partnering with our physicians to

ensure our community continues to benefit from great care in a full service hospital.”

In addition to electing Dr. Schwartz as their new Chief of Staff, physicians also elected Warren Rehwaldt, M.D., Vice-Chief of Staff and Sandy Saunders, M.D., Secretary/Treasurer. Both Dr. Schwartz and Dr. Rehwaldt will also now serve on the Board of Directors for Sutter Coast Hospital.

“We welcome new physician leaders to our local board and look forward to working with them to secure and improve health care in our community,” shares Ken Hall, Chair, SCH Board of Directors.

Sutter Coast Hospital is moving forward with plans to apply for and become a Critical Access Hospital in order to continue providing care for the residents of Del Norte and Curry counties. We plan to communicate with you throughout the process so you feel confident knowing your full service acute care hospital will remain intact. We will still have an Emergency Physician in the Emergency Department twenty-four hours a day/365 days a year. We will still have a hospitalist physician in the hospital twenty-four hours a day/365 days a year delivering the same level of care that is there today.

Over the past five years, our average daily inpatient bed count

has remained under 25. In 2013, our average daily census was 20. So, Critical Access is not taking away half of our beds, it’s right sizing the hospital to fit the needs of our community.

We know that patients do better when they are surrounded by their loved ones during times of illness. It’s important to us to keep patients in our community for their medical care. As a part of the Strategic Options Study, The Camden Group performed a basic needs assessment for physicians. What that study confirmed was that Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation was right on target when they hired an orthopedic surgeon to serve our community because the need for orthopedics was the number one reason for patients being flown out of the Emergency Department. Physician recruitment will continue to be a focus going forward to meet the needs of our community.

While we learn about the nuances of Critical Access please rest assured that our mission remains unchanged – to enhance the well-being of people in this community, with compassion and excellence in healthcare services. Together, we invite you to engage us as we make changes critical to the survival of our hospital for this generation and the next.

Send questions and notes to our attention at [email protected]. We plan to utilize

our website, local newsletters and other vehicles to keep you informed and up-to-date with the latest hospital news.

Advances in ophthalmology allow most people to maintain good vision as they go through life. Many eye problems can be prevented or corrected if detected in their beginning stages. Regular eye examinations are the best way to detect eye conditions early, while they can be treated. There are also measures that you can take to protect your vision throughout your lifetime. Early Detection and Treatment of Eye Problems: Many eye diseases and disorders become more common as we age. Early detection and treatment of eye problems is the best way to keep your healthy vision throughout your life. By age 65, one in three

Americans has some form of vision-impairing eye disease. Most do not know it because there are often no warning symptoms or they assume that poor sight is a natural part of growing older. Age 40 Baseline Exam: The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends an eye disease screening for all aging adults. The Academy now recommends that adults with no signs or risk factors for eye disease get a baseline eye disease screening at age 40 — the time when early signs of disease and changes in vision may start to occur. If there is any eye disease, treatments with medication, including eye drops, may be recommended. In some

cases, certain eye diseases require laser surgery or other surgical procedures performed by an Eye M.D. Healthy Lifestyle: At every age, vision is vital to enjoying an active, productive life. A lifetime of good vision builds on basics like nutritious food, exercise, rest, and not smoking. Our eyes need good blood circulation and oxygen intake, and both are stimulated by regular exercise. Seniors can pursue gentler exercises including walking, yoga, tai chi, or stretching and breathing. Protect Your Eyes From the Sun: Like your skin, your eyes never forget UV exposure. By protecting your eyes from the

sun’s ultraviolet (UV) rays, you can reduce your risks for some minor and serious eye problems. Make sure your sunglasses block 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B rays. UV damage adds up over time, so the sooner you begin protecting your eyes, the better. Prevent Eye Injuries: More than one million people suffer from eye injuries each year in the United States. Ninety percent of these injuries were preventable if the individual had been wearing appropriate protective eyewear (with “ANSI Z87.1” marked on the lens or frame). Remember to shield your eyes appropriately when playing sports and during common household tasks such as

working with chemicals, mowing the lawn, and working on your car. Getting regular examinations can prevent many leading causes of blindness and help preserve your sight. Whatever your age, you can take action to protect the health of your eyes. In Brookings call 541-469-5800, in Crescent City call 707-465-2020 to schedule your examination with the doctors of Pacific Vision Medical Center. We provide full-time, surgical, medical, and optical care for you – right here, along America’s Wild River Coast.

It is a well-known fact that sitting alone, at home, is not healthy. Seniors must look to their future well-being with a goal of not just living longer, but living well. In order to ensure the best possible outcome, emphasis must be given to staying healthy, active and socially connected to others. Baby Boomers have started reaching their senior years, and in zip code 97415, more than 36 percent of the population are over age 60. No one who has danced to rock and roll or burned a bra or promoted social equality or protested against a war is now willing to sit around in a recliner chair watching reality shows all day. Members of the Baby Boomer Generation are known for having positive attitudes and a social consciousness with a desire to contribute to social change and remain active for most of their lives. It is imperative that seniors find a

place where they can gather with others who share their passions, hobbies, gifts and knowledge. By maintaining physical health through appropriate exercise, activities and diet, the body remains strong. The mind is kept fit by enrolling in enriching classes and lifelong learning programs, attending or participating in cultural and social events. Additionally, the senior citizen’s soul is strengthened by giving back through teaching, helping and sharing time with other people in volunteer activities. Determine today to strive for physical, mental and social health by taking care of your body, mind and socially-linked spirit; get involved and contribute to your community and have fun along the way.

Do you love your SMILE?West Orthodontics answers your questions on the benefits of braces Smiles are a big part of our identity and how we are perceived by our peers. Improving your smile is one of the most valuable investments you can make to improve your overall appearance and self- image. Dr. Lance West and the highly skilled team at West Orthodontics have been treating patients from Del Norte and Curry counties for over a decade. Dr. West is proud to serve this community and is dedicated to giving every new patient a healthy beautiful smile that will last a lifetime. Dr. West earned his bachelor of science from Brigham Young University and graduated cum laude with a doctoral degree in Dentistry from St. Louis University School of Orthodontics. Dr. West is committed to providing patients with superior orthodontic care using the very latest in technology and medical advances. His goal is to create that PERFECT smile, with a philosophy that includes having fun in the office and establishing long-lasting friendships. What are the health benefits of braces? Orthodontically corrected teeth are less prone to chipping and wear, are easier to clean, and less likely to decay. A properly aligned bite results in less strain on jaw muscles/joints and aids in better chewing and digestion of food. Do people really get braces as an adult? Yes! About 25 percent of our

patients are adults. Through advances in orthodontic technology, today’s braces are smaller, stronger and more effective. We have several types of braces to choose from including metal braces, clear braces, Invisalign, and even lingual or behind the teeth braces. Treatment typically lasts 1-2 years, with some completed in as little as 6 months. When should my children start treatment and do we need a referral from our dentist? The American Association of Orthodontics recommends that an initial evaluation occur by age 7 to monitor proper growth and development. On average our patients begin treatment between the ages 11-15. You do not need a dental referral to have an evaluation. We are happy to share our exam findings with your general dentist. Are braces affordable? West Orthodontics takes pride in offering a variety of payment plans that will accommodate your budget and allow you to make interest-free payments throughout the length of treatment time. We are also happy to work with your insurance company to make sure you receive the maximum benefit possible. Call 541-469-2131 today to schedule your complimentary exam and see how Dr. West can help you live life smiling!

Choosing where to receive your care is never easy. Providing healthcare of the highest quality with genuine caring and compassion is the mission of Curry Health Network. Curry General Hospital is your community hospital; Curry Medical Clinic, Curry Family Medical, Curry Medical Practice and Curry Women’s Clinic all fully support your community hospital. From Port Orford, to Gold Beach, to Brookings - we are community people providing quality healthcare, right near home.

CURRY GENERAL HOSPITAL 94220 4th Street, Gold Beach

541-247-3000 New Hospital Serving the healthcare needs of the community for more than 60 years, Curry General has been called “a jewel among rural hospitals in Oregon” and we are known for our exceptionally compassionate and caring staff. We’re pleased and excited that our District citizens supported a ballot measure to build a new replacement hospital, expected to be completed in 2016.

Emergency Department Our emergency department is staffed with highly qualified, board-certified physicians who are on-site 24 hours per day, 7 days per week; and has earned a designation as a Level IV Trauma Center with 24-hour trauma surgeon availability.

Hospitalists Our patients benefit from our unique Hospitalist program. What is a Hospitalist? If you are unfamiliar with the term, a Hospitalist is a doctor who is specialized in the care of patients in the hospital. Our Hospitalists provide 24/7 care, stay on site, and are available for staff, patients and family members by cell phone, even after discharge. They communicate with the patient’s primary care physician, but handle their care during time spent in the hospital. They are available to meet with family members, answer questions, follow up on test results and order new ones if needed, and

respond quickly to any arising issues. Hospitalists also coordinate the care of patients between different physicians. Our Hospitalist program is uniquely better than most - rather than working 12-hour shifts, our Hospitalists work a 7 to 10-day shift resulting in fewer hand-offs of care between physicians, and improved quality of care.

Surgical Services The hospital has on-staff Board certified specialists in General Surgery, Urological and Gynecological Surgery. We also offer the services of visiting medical surgeons specializing in Orthopedics, Ear-Nose-Throat, Oncology/Hematology, Opthalmology, Neurology and Cardiology. We also provide outpatient surgical services including colonoscopy, CT biopsy and other minor surgeries for urology and gynecology-related conditions.

Laboratory Our Laboratory provides superior testing with personalized service, and has received CLIA’s “highly complex” certification. It is staffed with certified medical technologists, technicians and experienced laboratory assistants. A pathologist/clinical consultant is available at all times. Specialized areas include hematology, chemistry, immunochemistry, coagulation, urinalysis, drug screen testing, blood gases and serology.

Radiology / Imaging The Radiology Department has a wide range of imaging tools and technologies for early detection, examination, and diagnosis of illnesses and abnormalities. The staff works closely with physicians to accurately interpret results so each patient gets the best possible care. We offer CT Scans, X-Rays, Fluoroscopy, Digital Mammography, Ultrasound, MRIs, and will soon be offering EchoCardiograms. Our radiologists are accredited by The American College of Radiology. The Mammography department is also ACR accredited, which is the Gold Standard in radiological accreditation

and is widely recognized as a hallmark of safe, quality care.

Obstetrics / Gynecology We provide gynecological care to women in all stages of life, from annual exams to more complex problems. OB/GYN is staffed by experienced and caring family practice physicians, midwifery staff, and nurses. Our new and improved Obstetric services program will again be offered at Curry General Hospital by well-trained and highly experienced providers with an anticipated start date of March 2014.

Telestroke With strokes, faster care can mean a better outcome. We’ve partnered with Providence Brain and Spine Institute to bring the most advanced stroke care to our patients with on-demand remote consultation with expert neurologists. Telestroke provides access to some of the region’s top stroke specialists 24 hours/day.

Swing Bed Our Swing Bed Program is an alternative to prolonged acute hospitalization or short term nursing facility placement for post-acute extended care, providing skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services which may include IV therapy as well as physical/occupational and speech therapy.

Other Services Cardio Pulmonary Rehab, Coumadin Clinic, Dietitian, Intensive Care, Occupational Therapy, inpatient Pharmacy, Speech Therapy, Physical Therapy, Psychiatry, Urology and more.

The Diet Dilemna

Are diets weighing you down? More than 60% of Americans are overweight and coincidentally, more than $60 billion, that’s bil-lion with a B, US dollars are spent on diet and weight loss products. There’s a disconnect here. It seems the more people try to lose weight, the less successful they are. We’ve all heard diets don’t work and we can see from these numbers that’s mostly true, but why? What are we missing? There are many different diets on the market: Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, South Beach, Cab-bage Soup, etc., and most dieters

have tried them all. Researchers at UCLA analyzed 31 long-term studies and found that most dieters may initially lose 5 to 10% of their body weight. But sadly, they will gain it back in less than 6 months, along with some extra pounds. For most people, the UCLA study determined that “Diets do not lead to sustained weight loss or health benefi ts for the majority of peo-ple.” This is distressing, indeed, for those of us trying to get healthy by losing some extra baggage. What’s worse is that repeated-ly losing and gaining back weight, aptly called “Yo Yo Dieting,” is linked to cardiovascular disease, stroke, diabetes and compromised immune function. And even more frustrating, The New England Journal report-ed that low-carb diets work better for men than for women. Since the majority of dieters are women, this is more sad news. The study, part-ly funded by the Atkins Research Foundation, found that the Atkins diet did not result in the weight loss boasted in Atkins’ books and

programs, especially for women. Most diet researchers agree, the best way to permanently lose weight is to lose the diet! By adopt-ing a lifelong program of healthy eating and regular exercise that you can maintain, you will see gradual permanent weight loss. The trick is to enjoy the ride so you can stay on the bus. The best eat-ing program includes abundance, not deprivation. The healthy “diet foods” provide you the most nu-trients and fi ber with the least amount of calories and fats. Clear-ly, a healthy diet excludes ice cream, potato chips, French fries and cookies. But remember, it also limits fatty meats, cheese, butter, and all oils. You may be surprised to learn the best diet foods are the foods best for your diet. In other words, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes are not only low in calories tosupport weight loss, they’re also high in nutrients and fi ber, which helps you feel full and reduces cravings. They have little or no fat, and what they do

have is mostly unsaturated, which is healthier for your heart. And plant foods have no cholesterol. So fi ll your plate with mounds and mounds of vegetables and le-gumes. They will be fi lling and nu-tritious, and you’ll have a diffi cult time getting too many calories. If you use meats, use them for fl avor-ing, and not as a main dish. Sprin-kle with occasional nuts or seeds for some healthy fats. Your ener-gy will soar and you’ll feel more like exercising. So make your diet work for you by not dieting. Get on the healthy eating bus and en-joy the ride.

Ease into the workout habit with 15 minutes, 3 times a weekby Ellen Warren, Chicago Tribune “Maybe you love to eat but hate to exercise,” Jim Karas proposes. For most of us, that about sums it up. Karas wants to help you get over the exercise part of that equation. “The biggest hurdle you will ever face in losing weight isn’t sticking to a diet or going to the gym every day. It’s simply this: getting started,” he says. Can you spare 15 minutes, three

times a week? Trainer and author Karas says that’s enough to get you off to a good start. “If you’re doing nothing, this is absolutely a step in the right direction,” says Karas, who blogs (and sells his fi tness products) at jimkaras.com. Just those 45 minutes weekly will rev up your metabolism, increase your energy, and make you look and feel

better, he says. “You don’t have to have equipment. You don’t have to go to the gym,” he says. Instead, he recommends taking three basic exercises – pushups, Pilates planks, and squats or lunges — and doing each until “you’re almost out of breath.” Then repeat the series “until you fi ll up 15 minutes” three times weekly. Instructions for all of

these are all over the internet. And yes, he disagrees with federal guidelines that recommend 75 minutes a week of vigorous aerobic activity (or 2½ hours of moderate exercise). In most exercise regimens, “the neglected variable is intensity,” Karas says. “If you really get in there and get the job done, you optimize results and you save yourself time.”

(AP) — Gotta love January. Beguiling and bewitching, she beckons with possibilities of fitness, of health, of habits broken and of others made. And for some, it brings the elusive hope of something that will help us achieve those goals: The one perfect exercise. It works every muscle! It’s user-friendly! Improves cardio! Makes you look hip and buff! It’s a tantalizing idea, but it’s not gonna happen, says Dr. Benjamin Levine, director of the Institute for Exercise and Environmental Medicine at Texas Health Presbyterian. “It would be naive to assume one perfect exercise could do it all.” So does that call for packing up your gym bag or relegating your Christmas workout shoes to the corner? Of course not — no more than you’d eliminate a favorite and seemingly perfect meal from your diet because it didn’t contain all the proper food groups. Instead, think smorgasbord based on your own personal aspirations, says Levine, who is also professor of medicine and cardiology at UT Southwestern Medical Center. “People have multiple goals that are important to them individually — endurance, strength, muscle tone, mortality, functional capacity, competitiveness. They’re all very reasonable,” said Levine, whose physical activities include tennis, cycling, rowing, skiing, jumping rope and running. “You get yourself in more trouble worrying whether one is better than the other,” he said, “rather than how to work a variety into your life.” But that doesn’t mean a committed fit person doesn’t have favorites. So we asked Dallas-area trainers what they’d deem as the most (or at least closest-to) perfect exercise. They stressed to learn proper technique; otherwise, the exercise can do more harm than good. Plus, they agreed that you need to make them part — not all — of your workout.

The lunge The pro: Lee Goggin, personal trainer at SWEAT gym. The reason: It uses a large number of muscles and joints, strengthening hamstrings, glutes, quadriceps, hip adductors, ankles, knees and hips. It can be done anywhere and is one of the most versatile exercises you can have in your toolbox, he says. How to do it: Stand straight, hands on hips. Bending your right knee, take a big step forward so your knee is over the middle of your foot; do not bring your knee past your toe. Keeping your back straight and shoulder blades pulled together, lean forward. Pretend an imaginary line is connecting the dots from chest to knee to heel. When you’re in position, push up on your right leg slowly into standing position, keeping your foot flat on the ground. Make the motion smooth, stand up, repeat on the other side. Variations: Do them going up stairs. Or hold a weight or kettle bell in the opposite hand of your bent leg. Pushup The pro: Ryan Lehman, personal trainer and Pilates instructor at Studio 6. The reason: It’s an “essential exercise” that works the full body — shoulders, arms, core, legs, he says. How to do it: Position your body on the floor so your elbows are bent, your hands under your shoulders, your legs back and your belly drawn in. Slowly lower yourself to the ground and use your arms to push yourself up. Variations: Keep elbows wide or tight; hands wide or together. Or stagger your hands so one is lower than the other. Modify by doing them on your knees or off a counter- top. Make them tougher by using only one arm or leg, or clap between each. Or pulse your arms up and down, up and down. The burpee The pro: Jonathan Pylant, director of D-FW and San Antonio Camp Gladiator boot camps. (Further support comes from

theartofman liness.com website, which calls burpee “the one exercise to rule them all.”) The reason: It works four major areas of the body: the front region (chest and shoulders); posterior chain (back, glutes, hamstrings); core (front and back); and legs, he says. Adding a push-up also helps work arms; specifically, the triceps. How to do it: Stand straight, arms at sides. Bend your knees and lean forward slightly, putting your hands on the ground in front of you. Keeping your moves as smooth as possible, kick your legs behind you so you’re in plank position. Add a push-up if you’d like, then kick your legs so your knees are under you. Throw your arms above your head and jump, returning to starting position. Variation: While in plank position, with legs either straight or bent, add a push-up. To tone it down a little, instead of kicking both legs back, move one at a time. The exhalation squat The pro: Bill Neal, professor of physical education at Richland College. The reason: You’re using your center of gravity, he says. “That’s your power source.” How to do it: To do this variation on a traditional squat, exhale completely. Then, holding your arms straight in front of you and keeping your feet shoulder-width apart, bend your knees as you lower your body. Go as deeply as you can, keeping your feet flat on the ground and knees facing forward. Then use your pelvis, not your quadriceps, to raise your body to standing position. The exhalation squat helps open your hip flexors, which can help prevent such issues as knee and prostate problems, he says. Variations: Use a countertop or chair for balance. The plank The pro: Erin Bedell, personal trainer at SWEAT. The reason: It generates core strength in the abdominals, hip flexors and back.

With a few tweaks, it can be versatile. How to do it: Get in pushup position, keeping your body in a straight line and your elbows straight. “Make sure you are pulling your belly button in and that your head and neck are in correct alignment. Hold for 30 seconds and build up to a minute.” Variations: Bend your elbows, lower to your forearms and hold. “From there, the possibilities are endless: planks with leg lifts, plank to pushup position, planks with hip raises,” she said. Downward-facing dog The pro: Shannon Caldwell, yoga instructor. The reason: It offers strength, flexibility and balance, plus “gives a quick flush of circulation to the entire body as well as waking up the brain,” she said. It strengthens the arms and shoulders, opens the chest, stretches the legs from glutes to the Achilles tendon, even when the knees are bent. How to do it: Start in plank position with unbent elbows. Keeping your hands where they are, push your hips to a 45-degree angle upward. You’re trying to get into the position of an inverted V which, she says, “may take awhile.”V ariations: By bending your knees to 90 degrees, you “turn the legs into a strength-burning furnace.” Or extend one leg to the sky to create a balance challenge. Repeat with other side. Additional movements If you’re looking for more cardio, Molly Setnick, co-owner of Crowbar Cardio of Dallas, Texas, recommends rowing. “As a full body exercise, it’s one of the top calorie-burners out there, yet puts very little stress on the joints. It’s a low-trauma, high-reward exercise,” she said. Yolanda Alameda, of the Dallas YMCA, suggests stair-climbing for its “cardio, strength, stamina and endurance” properties. Walking, of course, almost always figures in, especially if you incorporate hills as well as varying levels of intensity.

Computer killing your eyes? There are ways to fight backBy Jill U. Adams / Special To The Washington Post We’ve all heard the complaint or something like it: “I’ve been staring at the screen all day. My eyes hurt.” But is it really the screen’s fault? (And if so, is there any long- or short-term damage?) Would our eyes be any better off perusing printed pages all day? Yes, you can blame the screen, but not for everything. Some of the same eye-care advice you’ll hear for computer screens applies to paper-bookworms, too. Screen-induced eye strain has an official name: computer vision syndrome. The term emerged about 20 years ago and describes a host of bothersome symptoms, including eye fatigue, burning and itchy eyes, blurred vision and sensitivity to bright light. People who spend two or more continuous hours at a computer every day are at greatest risk, according to the American Optometric Association. For most people, symptom treatment is enough — managing their reading position, taking rest breaks or using eye drops to relieve dry eyes. That said, dry and irritated eyes are associated with disorders of the cornea, the transparent layer at the front of the eye. See a doctor

if you’re putting drops in your eyes five or six times a day and still feel like they’re dry, says James Salz, a University of Southern California eye doctor . Still, he adds, “there’s no evidence that there’s any long-term damage from reading on a screen.” What is it about computers that irritates our eyes? The problem boils down to a couple of key factors: Blinking Study after study has found that when reading on screens people tend to stare more than they do when reading on a printed page. More staring means less blinking, which means your eyes get less refreshment from tears. “When you blink, you spread a layer of tears over the eye,” said Mark Rosenfield, a professor at the State University of New York College of Optometry. With less blinking, eyes get dry and sore. Another difference between the printed page and the computer screen is where the words are positioned relative to the eyes. People generally look down while reading a book or newspaper, but staring at screen usually means staring straight ahead. When you look down, more of your

eye is covered by the eyelid, but when you look straight ahead, more of your eye is exposed to the drying effect of air. Coupled with reduced blinking, this leads to dry eyes. Reading on mobile devices may be more book-like in terms of positioning, but blink rate is still a concern. Distance Not surprisingly, people reading on their smartphones tend to hold the device much closer to their eyes than they would a book or magazine. In a 2011 study, Rosenfield found that the 219 participants held their phones 14 inches from their eyes to read text messages and 12½ inches for a webpage. Typically, people read printed text from a distance of 15¾ inches. The result is that “your eye has to work much harder to focus at close distances,” Rosenfield says. The eyes turn in more (not quite cross-eyed), and that takes effort. Over time, that can lead to fatigue. Moreover, if you’re of a certain age, that focusing effort becomes even harder. At about age 40, natural changes in the eye’s focal length mean most people can’t see closely as well. That’s when you start holding the restaurant menu at arm’s

length to read. Other considerations are resolution, brightness and glare, says Alan Hedge, a professor of ergonomics at Cornell University. “The resolution of print on paper is higher than any screen out there.” Brightness should be adjusted for comfort, either on your screen or the lamp by your reading chair. As for glare, it is easier to read a book or an e-ink on an e-reader in the sunshine. But if you’re reading late at night in bed, you might prefer the backlit screen of a tablet. The good thing about electronic reading is that you can change so many things to make the experience more comfortable, such as increasing the size of the text and fiddling with the brightness, which can also help you keep the words at a distance. Salz says 18 inches is ideal. Common sense goes a long way too, Salz says. “As soon as you feel fatigue, look away.” Indeed, workplace advice for people who read on computers for a large part of their days comes in the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

More than ever, yoga is capturing the interest of people of all ages, regardless of fitness level. Good for the mind, body and spirit, yoga is probably best known for its ability to help increase flexibility and reduce stress. There is no need to be athletic or in great shape to practice yoga, and experts will tell you that it can be as easy or as difficult as you choose to make it. Yoga, when practiced on a regular basis, provides a sense of awareness of the body’s strengths and weaknesses, which can then be addressed at your own pace. Proper breathing, and various

positions, or asanas as they are called, are used in yoga for the purpose of releasing tension and tightness throughout the body. Just as with strengthening the muscles, the idea is to build flexibility slowly over time. Yoga can be included as part of an overall fitness plan, burning an average of about 250 calories per hour. It’s been said that you don’t have to be spiritual to practice yoga, but if you practice yoga, you will probably end up finding yourself a little more spiritual. Yoga belongs to all religions, and it helps people to get in touch with their spiritual side. Even the meditation side of yoga

is not religious in nature. Meditation is just another way quiet to quiet the mind, reduce stress and promote self-awareness. The more you practice yoga, the calmer you become. Basic guidelines First and foremost, always use nose breathing throughout all exercises in yoga. Yoga should also be practiced on an empty stomach. Experts routinely advise drinking adequate amounts of water, and this is especially important with exercise. It is thought that consuming plenty of water after a yoga session can help rid the body of toxins that might have been released

during class. Remember to have fun with yoga; it should be something you look forward to. It has the power to make you feel relaxed, yet energized long after you roll up your mat and go on about your day.Hot yoga offers different types of yoga classes that take place in a heated room, which in some facilities can be close to 100 degrees. The idea is that the extra heat may enhance flushing of toxins and promote greater flexibility by allowing for a deeper stretch.

Yes, it is possible to get kids to eat everything on their plates: spinach, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, you name it. Why do so many of today’s kids have picky palates? Some people with capital letters after their names say it’s because their taste buds send weird signals to their brains when they eat certain foods. So what if something initially tastes weird? When I was a kid, I thought spinach tasted weird. I ate it anyway and learned eventually to love it. My parents didn’t give me a choice. That’s the real reason kids have picky palates — parents give choices. Since the parenting revolution of the 1960s, experts have been encouraging parents to give children choices. Today’s parents complain about children who argue with them about “everything.” They also complain that their kids won’t eat anything but (some form of junk food). Yes, they will eat something besides junk. Here’s the simple, tested, certified, three-step plan: 1. Fix what YOU want him or her to eat for breakfast and lunch. If he or she does not eat it, wrap it or toss it. Do not allow snacking, even if he or she has eaten nothing all day. Your child will live, I assure you. My lawyer said I could tell you that. 2. Prepare the evening meal

with no consideration of said picky eater’s food preferences. On the child’s plate, put one level teaspoon of each food, as in one teaspoon of roast beef, one teaspoon of mashed potatoes with a few drops of gravy (“He loves mashed potatoes and gravy!”), and one teaspoon of broccoli. The rule then becomes: When the child has eaten EVERYTHING on the plate, he or she may have seconds of ANYTHING, and it can be as large as his or her eyes are big. 3. It will take a week or so and much complaining, but he will eventually begin eating the green, weird-tasting thing. At that point, begin slowly increasing the portion size of the green thing, but do not increase the portion of the thing(s) he or she loves. Keep them at one teaspoon. Within a month, your child will be eating a regular-sized portion of foods his or her palate would not accept previously, upon which you can begin increasing the portion size of things he or she loves. Voila! The key to the success of this fail-safe formula — the variable that makes it fail-safe — is that the child’s parents do not sit at the table encouraging him or her to “just try” the food he or she hates. They must act completely nonchalant. If need be, they can feed him or her and then sit down to a pleasant meal. What a concept!
