COPD is usually diagnosed in middle-age or elderly patients and can also be referred to as emphysema or chronic bronchitis. The main cause of COPD is long-term exposure to substances that irritate and damage the lungs such as cigarette smoke. Exposure to air pollution, chemical fumes, or dust can also cause COPD. This disease develops slowly and may take years for symptoms to manifest. At first, COPD may cause no symptoms or only mild symptoms. As the disease progresses, symptoms usually become more severe. Symptoms of COPD include a cough that produces a lot of mucus, wheezing, and chest tightness. Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity, is also a symptom of COPD. Doctors use lung function tests, imaging tests, and blood tests to diagnose COPD. There is not a cure for COPD. However, treatments such as medicines, oxygen therapy, surgery, or a lung transplant may relieve symptoms. Quitting smoking is the most important step you can take to treat COPD. Breast Cancer Risk Factors Breast cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among American women. This type of cancer kills more women in the United States than any other kind except for lung cancer. Studies have shown that your risk for breast cancer is due to a combination of factors. Some common factors that are associated with an increased risk of breast cancer are listed below. Increasing Age: Your risk of breast cancer increases as you age. Family History: If your mother, sister, or daughter was diagnosed with breast cancer, particularly at a young age, your risk of breast cancer is increased. Genetics: Certain gene mutations that increase the risk of breast cancer can be passed from parents to children. The most common gene mutations are referred to as BRCA1 and BRCA2. Personal Factors: Beginning your period before age 12 or beginning menopause after age 55 may increase your risk of breast cancer. Having never been pregnant or having your first child at an older age can increase your risk. Women who give birth to their first child after age 35 have an increased risk of breast cancer. Hormone Replacement Therapy: Women who take hormones to treat the signs and symptoms of menopause have an increased risk of breast cancer. This risk decreases when women stop taking these medications. In recent years, there has been a gradual reduction in breast cancer incidence rates among women aged 50 and older. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, in part due to better screening and early detection, increased awareness, and continually improving treatment options.
