andS.M.A.R.T. GOALS
Knowing how to set and achieve goals are important life skills.
Lets explore how to set and achieve goals …
What is Goal Setting?
The process of working toward something you want to accomplish
TWO THINGS TO CONSIDER:
(1) Is your goal a short term goal or a long term goal ?
(2) Make sure yourgoal is realistic and reachable.
REMEMBER:
Long Term goals
require a lot more
time and patience
than Short Term
goals
ALSO:
If your goals are unrealistic and unreachable, you will end up getting frustrated and discouraged
EIGHT STEPS TO FOLLOW:
STEP 1:
Write your goal down.
* Put your written
goal someplace
where you will see
it often.
STEP 2: Make a plan .
* List steps you need to follow to meet your goal.
* Breaking your big goal into small steps can make it easier to meet your goal.
STEP 3:
Set a time line.
* When will I meet each step?* When will I reach my final goal?
STEP 4:
Get help.
* Identify people and things you need to help you
meet your goal.
STEP 5:Start now!!
* Do not procrastinate!
STEP 6:
Keep a written record of your progress.
* Write steps down as you accomplish them.
* This keeps you accountable and helps build confidence.
STEP 7:
Evaluate your
progress.
* Are you making
progress?
* Do you need to
change anything?
STEP 8:
Reward Yourselffor met goals.
* Buy or do something you enjoy as a reward.

If you want to achieve your goals …
You need to
start setting
S.M.A.R.T. Goals
S. M. A. R. T. goals are:
S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Achievable
R = Realistic
T = Timely
Let’s look at each part of “S.M.A.R.T.” goal setting:
S = Specific
• Goal is detailed,
particular, or focused
• You know exactly what
you want to accomplish
• Easy to understand
M = Measurable
• Goal you can see, observe, count, quantify
• There is evidence you met goal
• Consider the words (language) you use
A = Achievable • Goal is self-maintained• Mostly up to you to meet
• You have control over meeting goal
R = Realistic
• Goal is practical and possible
• Balance between what is hard and what is easy
• Requires a “stretch” that makes you progress and improve
T = Timely • Goal is scheduled
• Has a deadline
• Must be finished by a certain date or time

question SMART Goal Test
Example 1:
Mrs. Blackwell(35 years old, only 5 foot
2 inches tall) wants to play center for the Los Angeles Lakers
basketball team next year.
S. M. A. R. T. goal ?
Answer = No
Example 2:
A LYON Student wants to raise her math grade from 72% to over 80% within six weeks..
S. M. A. R. T. goal ?
Answer = Yes
Example 3:
A Lyon student wants to have “better” and “cooler” hair.
S. M. A. R. T. goal ?
Answer = No
Example 4:
Mrs. Blackwell’s husband wants to lose five pounds within 2 months so
he can wear a suit to a wedding.
S. M. A. R. T. goal ?
Answer = Yes
Example 5:
Lyon’s principal expects Lyon’s sports teams to win first place in
every competitive sport this year.
S. M. A. R. T. goal ?Answer = No
Example 6:
Mr. Vallet plans to improve his conversational Spanish by learning five new Spanish vocabulary words
each week.
S. M. A. R. T. goal ?
Answer = Yes
Example 7:
Mrs. Chappell plans to lower her home electric bill this year by turning off all lights when rooms are not in use and
using special energy-efficient light bulbs .
S. M. A. R. T. goal ?
Answer = yes
Example 8:
Mrs. Prisbrey (who drinks 3 Dr. Pepper’s per day) plans to give up drinking Dr.
Pepper within six weeks by reducing her intake by one Dr. Pepper every two
weeks.

Answer = Yes
Example 9:
Your counselor wants all of Lyon’s students to be
“happier.”
S. M. A. R. T. goal ?
Answer = No
Example 10:
Mr. Brown wants to include two servings of fruits and vegetables
in his meals each day.
S. M. A. R. T. goal ?
Answer = Yes
